Today’s match presents another opportunity for our players and you our supporters to enjoy what should be a fantastic atmosphere in today’s Yorkshire Derby.
Our last match against Doncaster had all the traits we look for in a performance from a Harrogate Town team. We showed we were right up for it from the first whistle, we got on the front foot created chances and we were organised defensively when we didn’t have the ball. This week in training, our preparation has been centred on doing all we can to make sure the players reach those performance levels once again.
As staff, we have watched the last game at Doncaster this week. While we were pleased with the performance. We have still identified the areas in which we want to improve and have worked hard in training to try and do that.
We know the style which Doncaster will look to implement here today. They are a team who like to play through the thirds so it’s important that we work hard as a unit to stop them from doing that.
In our last home match against Wimbledon, I thought there were many aspects of our performance which fell well below the standards we have set for ourselves in the second half of the season. However, we found a way to grind out a result and the resilience which the lads showed was really encouraging for the remainder of the campaign. It was also great to see the scenes around the stadium when Levi’s equaliser went in.
The raw emotion of the occasion and the togetherness we have both on and off the pitch is something which is really pleasing to see, I hope we can share some more exciting scenes between now and the end of the season.
I am delighted to see Levi score his first goal for the club. He has been magnificent in that midfield since he came in. I also think the goal had been coming for a couple of weeks so hopefully it’s the first of many.
Monday’s match against Leyton Orient was another test of the character within our group. The first-half performance wasn’t anywhere near good enough and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb. However, to their credit, the lads took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half. Ant and Thommo did well to get their goals. I would even argue that we were unlucky not to win the game.
I’d like to take this time to pay credit to the effort levels of the lads. The nature of this league meant that they were required to play 180 minutes with very little rest. However, they rose to the challenge well and ran themselves into the ground for you and the badge.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Alex Pattison and his partner on the birth of their baby boy last Friday.

THE STADIUM
It’s great to have the opportunity to play in another Yorkshire Derby here today against Doncaster.
Our last match against today’s visitors was a great one to play in. Both sides gave it their all, as a group we rose to the occasion and the performance from that match is one which we want to bring forward to today.
As captain, we left Doncaster with a real pride in the way we played and you could see from the supporters reaction that they shared that pride.
Despite the late heroics, we are very clear on the fact that the performance showed in our last home match against Wimbledon wasn’t anywhere near the levels we expect from ourselves.
However, at this time of the season, the resilience to battle through and find a way back into the match is testament to the character of the group we have here.
Monday’s match against Leyton Orient, was really a game of two halves. First half wasn’t good enough and we gave our opponents far too much respect. However, at half-time, we had some honest conversations, made a few tactical changes and played much better in the second half.
At this time of the season, it is important that we have the togetherness and trust to have those difficult conversations. We reacted brilliantly in the opening exchanges and showed great character to get back into the game.
Looking at Doncaster, it’s going to be another tough game. They keep possession well and they play with a good tempo, so we are going to have to work hard as a unit to disrupt that rhythm from the first whistle.
This week, training has been dedicated to developing a game plan. We all know our roles within that plan and the gaffer has been clear on exactly what is expected from us.
As always, you have a role to play in that too. In recent matches we have shared some memorable moments. Against Wimbledon, the togetherness on both sides of the white line was incredible and it was great to see so many people at the game.
Also, against Barrow, it was a tight match. There was very little to separate the two teams, but your backing was enough to help us come out on top.
Finally, it’s great to see that Toby has signed a new contract with the club. He has been a fantastic addition to the squad and is a great lad to have around the dressing room. He has had to fill the gap after Kayne Ramsay’s injury but to his credit he has come in and the defensive solidity of the team has continued.
Enjoy the game!

Hi everyone! I am running the 2023 London Marathon for Leukaemia Care to help support those who have been affected by a blood cancer diagnosis.
Leukaemia Care is a national charity dedicated to ensuring that anyone affected by blood cancer receives the right information, advice, and support. Around 34,000 people are affected by blood cancer each year in the UK and we’re here to support them through their diagnosis, treatment and beyond.
By donating, you will not only be supporting patients, but carers and families too whose lives are impacted when someone they know, or love receives a diagnosis. Any donation would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Charlie HigginsThank you for everyone who attended the game against AFC Wimbledon on Good Friday. It was our biggest crowd of the season and nothing quite beats that feeling of an equalising goal in the 97th minute!

We were delighted to welcome fundraisers Hughie Higginson and Freddie Xavi to The EnviroVent Stadium earlier this month. Together, the two friends are running 1km around every football ground in the Premier League and EFL plus another eight to make it 100km, raising money for the children’s cancer ward at Leeds Children’s Hospital.
Run number 19 of their quest was at Town as they began their Yorkshire leg of the challenge, and the two Pride of Britain winners were joined by Josh Falkingham and George Thomson as they completed two laps of the pitch.

Midfielder Levi Sutton has revealed the lure of ‘unfinished business’ at Town was a key factor in his decision to return to the club during the January transfer window.
The former Bradford and Scunthorpe man had two other options to consider before completing his return to Yorkshire’s yellow & black on deadline day.
Words: Nickolas McInally
“I went into Bradford that day thinking I would leave to join a different club on loan. I left the training ground and my agent told me the deal wasn’t quite done yet so I went home and waited for him to call.”
“Time was marching on, and nothing seemed to be moving. My agent came round, and we had the conversation about what my options were and as soon as I learned about Harrogate’s interest I was keen to get the deal over the line.”
“I was speaking to my partner and agent to get their thoughts. I also contacted some of my youth team managers for their advice. I thought it would be a good idea to get an outside perspective, and thankfully they all agreed with me, and I came here.”
“Obviously, I had been here before but since then I had played a lot of games, improved a lot as a player, I was desperate to play. It felt like I had some unfinished business and I wanted to play my part in trying to push this side as far up the table as possible.”
After beginning his career with Scunthorpe, Town’s number 17 admits it was tough to see the club go through financial hardship recently.
“I really enjoyed my time with the club. I didn’t really leave the way I would have liked but that doesn’t change how I feel for Scunthorpe. I grew up supporting them as a kid so to see them go through their troubles recently was tough. Now they’ve managed to get a new owner in and I think things are starting to look up which is really pleasing.”
Reflecting on his time with The Iron, Sutton admits there is a sense of pride in representing his local club.
“I’ve got nothing but happy memories from my time there. They gave me an opportunity to play in the football league and that was the dream coming through the system as a young kid. It was my home town club as well so to represent them was something that I am very proud to have achieved. At the time we were a really strong side and to eventually break into that team is something which means a lot to me.”
However, the midfielder concedes this does not come without an added expectation.
“There is a pressure which comes with representing a club but when you have friends and family who are supporters of that team. When I was coming through there was a lot of money being spent on that squad.”
“We were battling at the top of the league and there was an expectation to win, that is something
which I am proud to be a part of but also something that I enjoyed.”
Sutton also praised the influence which the experienced players within the Scunthorpe dressing room had on him as a player, as he looks to have a positive influence on the young players in Town’s squad.
“I think being around a good group helped me too. I was young and coming through the youth system so I didn’t have a lot of experience. Rory McArdle was actually there at the time and there was a lot of good people like him around who helped me improve.
“I don’t think I would be where I am today without their influence on me. There was a lot of experienced heads who I always tried to learn something from, that might be in training or by speaking directly to them to understand what helped them to have long and successful careers. Hopefully now, I am starting to become one of those players. I speak to George Horbury a lot and ask him how he is getting on with his loan move and hopefully I can do something to help him in his career.”
Similarly to Horbury, Sutton too had a first-loan in non-league football. The midfielder joined North Ferriby United and believes this experience was vital in improving him as a footballer.
“Going out on a first loan is different from anything you have really experienced so far. At youth team level the results don’t really matter as much and the physicality isn’t anywhere near as high but first team football is nothing like that.”
“Results are everything, people’s mortgages and wages depend on the results you pick up as a squad. There is a lot more pressure which I think is part of your development and you need to be around if you are to develop. I was always physically strong at my level. However, going up against grown men was a different level all together. To be in and around that and learning how to deal with the challenge is good.”
Despite not playing as often as he would have liked during his first spell with Town, Sutton admits his experience with the club helped him to make the step up to League Two football.
“I was really impressed with the club when I came in during my first spell. I really wanted to play games and unfortunately it didn’t work as well as I wanted it to but that’s football. Looking back Harrogate were flying. The club were playing well and winning most weeks, as a young kid coming in it’s always going to be tough to break into a side like that and stay there. Coming in and training with a side who was in that position definitely helped me to improve.”
“Although it didn’t work out, my time at the club was a blessing. I ended up going back to Scunthorpe and playing most weeks at League Two level. I was desperate to play for Scunthorpe and desperate to play in the football league so it was great to have the opportunity to experience both.”
Despite registering over 50 appearances with Scunthorpe, Sutton chose to leave the club in the summer of 2020. After Covid-19 saw the previous campaign curtailed, the midfielder believes this
decision helped him to progress to the next stage of his career.
“I had planned on staying and I was hearing good things from the club about a new contract. However, covid came and it’s impact on the club’s finances meant they weren’t able to offer me the deal we had discussed before.”
“I then had a decision to make, if I were to stay I would have to take a pay-cut or I had to take the risk of leaving and seeing what was available to me. Thankfully, I knew Stuart McCall at Bradford and he knew me. We spoke and he told me where the club wanted to go and it just felt right. I was ready to take the next step and continue to develop and I thought Bradford was the best place to do that.”
With the former Bradford manager currently coach of promotion chasers Sheffield United, Town’s number 17 hopes to see McCall coaching in the Premier League next season.
“Stuart McCall was the manager. He played a similar position to me, he is a man who I have got so much respect for and I would leave it all on the line for him every week. He has achieved so much in football and it’s great to see him involved with Sheffield United so hopefully they can go up this year.”
After watching Town edge a tight FA Cup encounter earlier in the season, the 26-year-old admits he was impressed by the quality which the squad showed.
“The FA Cup game is one which stands out for me. I watched that game and was very impressed
by the team and thought the quality right through the squad was impressive. I knew a lot of the lads here and I thought I would love to play with them and thankfully it has worked out that way. Coming in I knew what this club was about, it hasn’t changed from my first spell. I knew what I could bring to the squad and to the supporters.
“Every week going out there, I give my all, if I don’t play well , I want to come off the pitch knowing I’ve gave my all and I always hope that supporters can see my effort and commitment no matter what.”
The midfielder also praised the impact which Town boss Simon Weaver has had on his development during his short time with the club.
“The manager spoke to me and made it clear what he expected from me. Since I’ve came in, he’s been fantastic, he is always pushing to improve me every week and we have had some honest conversations at points, and I think I’ve improved for that.”
After striking up a strong bond with club captain Josh Falkingham in the middle of the pitch, Sutton believes the drive to win from the pair has been a key factor in their success.
“We are both battlers, we both want to do well here and will try to do whatever we can to win. Our skillsets complement each other well too. I know
him and I’ve played against him enough times to know what he could bring to my game. Thankfully, it’s worked out well.”
As the season enters the home straight, the 26-year-old believes the leadership shown by experienced players within the squad has guided the group well.
“It’s that time of the season where you have to win your battles. We have got our heads down and are working hard. We know where we want to be and the work, we need to do to make sure we achieve our aim of finishing as high up the league as possible. You look across the dressing room and there are players who have been round the block. You hear them all before games and they are consistent with their message to the lads so I definitely think that helps.”
Looking ahead to the next campaign, Sutton believes pre-season will be important as he aims to start the new season on the front foot.
“Leaving Bradford, it was important for me to get my match-sharpness back up. I think I’m on the way to where I want to be, I am enjoying my football again and hopefully next season I will be flying. I’ll have a full pre-season under my belt and come into next season fit, fresh and ready to go.”
John Reed first managed the club during the 1990/91 season from Christmas until end of season and returned in October 2000 as assistant manager/coach to help Mick Hennigan.
For 2001/02 Reed was given the first team managers post whilst Hennigan became Director of Coaching but soon left the club by mutual consent. In June 2001 Town unveiled their big summer signing, Neil Aspin, a former Leeds United defender who joined as player/coach. The season, however, began with a 2-1 defeat at Lincoln United but Town then went 10 league and cup games without defeat moving
After the away win at Workington on 19 February 2002 they went nine points clear with three games in hand and after a 4-3 win at Belper Town on 9 April clinched promotion with seven games left. A large crowd of 756 turned up at Wetherby Road the following Saturday to congratulate them before Town clinched the title at Witton Albion on 20 April. Reed’s Town finished the season 10 points clear at the top and were also top of the attendance table. It was all wonderful stuff as Town had gained promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division for the first time ever after fifteen years of trying since they joined the new NPL Division One for 1987/88.
For 2002/03 it was a sixth place finish in the Premier Division under Reed and another West Riding County Cup final victory, followed by a fifth place finish 2003/04.
Reed left in the New Year of 2005 with assistant Mark Atkins to join Stalybridge Celtic and left Neil Aspin as the new Manager.
Reed managed 228 games, winning 109, drawing 50 and losing 69.

for football at every level, helping thousands of clubs to have a positive impact on their local community. “Our wide-ranging investment supports an array of programmes within communities and the ‘Premier League Supports’ campaign is an opportunity for clubs at all levels to celebrate the unsung heroes who help deliver or participate in this activity.”
“The new funding announcements we are making highlight our commitment to deliver more support than ever before and will benefit the people and places that are the heartbeat of football up and down the country.”
“The strength of the football pyramid in this country is unique and we will continue to look at new ways to support the entire game, directing funds where they are needed most.”
Investment for these programmes is distributed through the Premier League Charitable Fund, which is one of the biggest sport charities in the world. Grants are given to professional club community organisations across the Premier League, EFL and National League, helping them employ more than 6,200 people.

The Town Academy entertained Bradford City at York St John’s last Thursday afternoon in a crucial top of the table clash.
A second half strike from Brad Williams deservedly cancelled out a first half penalty from Isaac Robinson to earn Town a share of the points.
After a bright start by Town, Bradford came back into the game in a very competitive and fiercly contested first half which was largely played in the centre of the park with few clear-cut chances created by either side. On the half hour mark, however, the visitors took the lead after Town failed to deal with a speculative high ball over the top which culminated in Cadarn Taylor being adjudged to have brought down Isaac Robinson in the box. The Bantams striker picked himself up to send Harvey Giles the wrong way and put his side 1-0 up and that’s how it remained at half time.
Town came out in the second half with a new intensity and took control of the game with Manny Ilesanmi a constant handful for the Bantams back line and Brad Williams a real threat down the right hand side. It was no more than Town deserved when the industrious Williams levelled the scoring on 61 minutes after combining with Mason Wilson on the edge of the box to dispatch a fierce shot past the Bantams keeper to level the scores.
Town continued to dominate and Ilesanmi was really unlucky to see a superb volley from the corner of the box beat the keeper all hands up but unfortunately strike the far post and rebound off to safety. Brad Williams then chipped a ball to the back post for Ilesanmi again who saw his header hit the post again. Bradford were really hanging on but managed to see out the remaining minutes. On the balance of play over the 90-minutes, Town could consider themselves unlucky to have not taken the three points but the point sees them maintain their two point advantage over the Bantams at the top of the table, with three games left to play.

FORM GUIDE
Joining Rovers from Hartlepool United in January 2022, the former Newcastle United youth and reserve team stopper has been more or less ever-present between the sticks since joining and has over 150 career appearances to his name since making his professional debut for Derby County in 2016 as well as being called up to the England U21 squad that year. During his time at Prode Park the 28-year-old spent time out on loan with Luton Town, Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town, Macclesfield Town and Northampton Town, before leaving The Rams in June 2021 and penning a short-term deal with Hartlepool United in August 2021.
Signing for Rovers in the Summer, the 25-year-old spent the past three seasons with Harlepool United, and finished as their top scorer last term as he helped Pools to re-establish themselves in the EFL. Having come through the ranks at Sunderland, Molyneux made six first team appearances for the Black Cats, while also spending time on loan with non-league side Gateshead. It was later in the same campaign that he joined Hartlepool, with a temporary move there swiftly made permanent in the summer of 2019. He quickly became a fans favourite at Victoria Park, with his goals from distance becoming something of a trademark including a stunner against Town at the EnviroVent Stadium last season.
Now in his fifth full season as a Rovers player, after making a loan switch permanent in May 2018, the 29-yearold was given the captain’s armband in January. He initially spent the latter part of the 2017/18 season on loan from his boyhood club Burnley having been with the Clarets from the age of seven. After turning pro in May 2012, he had loan spells at Barrow, Hyde, FC Halifax Town and Lincoln City, before making his EFL debut on loan at Carlisle United in November 2014. Two and half seasons on loan at Chesterfield followed before he joined Port Vale on loan for the first half of the 2017–18 season, before he was loaned to Rovers for the second half of the season.
Danny Schofield was appointed manager of Rovers in October 2022, replacing Gary McSheffrey. Schofield began coaching in the Barnsley youth academy while still a player with Rotherham United, before spending the 2015/16 season as a player-coach with Bradford Park Avenue. In December 2016, the 42-yearold joined Leeds United as an academy coach before working with the under-23’s alongside Carlos Corberán. In August 2019, Schofield left Leeds United to join Middlesbrough as the club’s new under-23 assistant lead coach. After six months on Teesside, Schofield returned to Huddersfield Town where he had spent the majority of his 564 game playing career as under-19 coach. After the sacking of Danny Cowley as Huddersfield Town manager, on 20 July 2020, Schofield was appointed as caretaker manager for the Terriers final Championship fixture of the 2019–20 season and after the appointment of Carlos Corberán as head coach Schofield was promoted to work with the first team as Professional Development Coach. In July 2022, following the resignation of Corberán, Schofield was named as the new Head Coach of Huddersfield.
Northern Ireland international insideforward Peter Doherty managed Doncaster Rovers to the Third Division (North) title in 1949-50. He helped Glentoran win the Irish Cup in 1932 and moved via Blackpool to Manchester City in June 1936. Starring in their 1936-37 League Championship success, he joined Derby County in December 1945 and was an FA Cup winner in 1946. He then played for Huddersfield, becoming Doncaster’s player-boss in June 1949 and plotting successive FA Cup runs. Appointed Bristol City’s boss in January 1958, he also managed Northern Ireland and later coached various clubs. He died in April 1990.
Player-manager Bill Leivers built Doncaster Rovers’ 1965-66 Fourth Division championship team. Initially with Chesterfield, the defender joined Manchester City in November 1953 and starred in their 1956 FA Cup final success. He became Doncaster’s player-boss in July 1964 and remained in charge until resigning in February 1966. Briefly manager of Workington, he was appointed Cambridge United’s boss in December 1967 and led them to two consecutive Southern League championship triumphs, then promotion in 1972-73. He later managed Chelmsford City, then Cambridge City, plotting their 1985-86 promotion campaign.
Lawrie McMenemy managed Doncaster Rovers to the Fourth Division title in 1968-69. A former guardsman, he was Gateshead’s trainer, then Bishop Auckland’s manager before coaching Sheffield Wednesday. He was Rover’s manager from December 1968 until May 1971, then managed Grimsby to the Fourth Division title in 1971-72. Joining Southampton in July 1973, he plotted their 1976 FA Cup triumph, also leading them to promotion in 1977-78 and the League Cup final in 1979. He later managed Sunderland, then was England’s assistant-boss, Saints’
director of football and Northern Ireland’s manager.
Former Scotland international midfielder Billy Bremner managed Doncaster Rovers to promotion in 1980-81 and 1983-84. Signing professional for Leeds United in December 1959, he skippered them to all three major domestic honours and was Footballer of the Year in 1970. He joined Hull City in September 1976 and became Doncaster’s manager in November 1978, remaining in charge until rejoining Leeds as manager in October 1985. Guiding them to the Second Division play-off final and FA Cup semi-finals in 1986-87, he rejoined Doncaster as manager from July 1989 until November 1991. He died in December 1997.
Dave Penney guided Doncaster to the Third Division title in 2003-04. Initially with Pontefract Colliery, the midfielder joined Derby County in September 1985 and Oxford United in June 1989. He was loaned to Swansea City in March 1991, helping win the Welsh Cup, then rejoined Swansea in March 1994 and featured in the 1996-97 play-off final. Joining Cardiff City in July 1997, he moved to Doncaster in August 1998 and became manager in March 2002. He plotted their 2003 Conference play-off final triumph and remained in charge until September 2006, then managed Darlington, Oldham and Bristol Rovers.
Ex-Republic of Ireland international Sean O’Driscoll plotted Rovers’ 2007 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final triumph. Initially with Alvechurch, he joined Fulham in November 1979 and helped them to win promotion in 198182. He moved to AFC Bournemouth in February 1984 and starred in their 1986-87 Third Division title triumph. Making a then record 423 League appearances, he became Cherries’ coach, then manager in August 2000, plotting promotion in 2002-03. He managed Doncaster from September 2006 until September 2011, taking them to promotion in 2007-08, then Forest, Bristol City and Walsall.
Darren Ferguson managed Rovers’ 2016-17 promotion success. The Scotland U-21 midfielder played for Manchester United, under his father Sir Alex Ferguson, Wolves and Wrexham. He was Peterborough’s boss from January 2007 until November 2009, plotting promotion in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Managing Preston, then Posh again between January 2011 and March 2015, he plotted promotion in 2010-11 and Football League Trophy success in 2014. He managed Doncaster from October 2015 until June 2018, then Posh for a third time from January 2019 until February 2022, plotting promotion in 2020-21.
