THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER

Welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium ahead of our Easter weekend double header, which begins on Friday as we host Swindon Town in the 3pm kick-off. We’ve got five games left to play this season and although recent results haven’t gone our way, I believe that our performances have generally deserved a lot more than what we’ve come away with. Although I know that doesn’t change anything in terms of league position, I think it means we can have belief that we’re on the right tracks and we have a good idea going into next season of what we need to make the next step. Against Salford last weekend we created a load of chances and if we had finished them, we could have been talking about a completely different outcome. The effort from the lads can’t be faulted and we’ve just got to keep working hard and get that little bit of luck to come our way. We’re well aware that home form in particular needs to improve and the support we’ve seen at the EnviroVent Stadium this season deserves it. It’s been great to have so may new faces and families at our games this season, supporting the lads whether we win, lose or draw. Our aim this Good Friday is to send the lads out onto the pitch with belief and confidence in their abilities and

4

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

allow them to enjoy the game. We know Swindon are very good footballing side and look to pass out from the back at every opportunity, as we saw in the reverse fixture back in November. That afternoon we were brave in and out of possession and ended up coming way with a really valuable point. If we can replicate that type of performance on Friday, I’m sure we’ll be sending the supporters home happy. Thank you for your support.

#ProudToBeTown

The newest addition to the Harrogate Town 100 club is our number 5, Will Smith! The 23-year-old centre half joined Town in June 2019 and since then has won promotion from the National League and lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium. We sat down to chat to Will about those first 100 games in Harrogate Town colours… by Henry Whitaker

SIGNING FOR TOWN… Coming into it I didn’t really know whether I’d be starting straight away, I just saw it as a new chance to impress people. After leaving Barnsley I wanted to prove that I was good enough and better than what they were thinking of me. When I arrived, I did what I could to get into the starting line-up and when a little bit of luck comes your way, you have to take it.

SETTLING INTO THE SIDE… II remember playing on the opening day of the season and I did feel like I was out of my depth. Every player in their team was massive and I wasn’t that big myself. We then went to Barrow, and I scored two goals which gave me a big confidence boost and I kicked on from there, really. I feel like trust was built quite quickly and it’s such an important thing in football. When you’re thrown in at the deep end you know you have to go and perform, and I think that was probably the best thing for me. continued overleaf...

PROMOTION IN THE DEBUT SEASON… Not many people get to play at Wembley and I remember Steady (Jon Stead) talking to me about it being his first time at Wembley at 30 odd years old. To play at Wembley at 21 years old and win, it was the best day of my life for me and the club. It’ll always be one of the standout moments for me. It’ll appear on my phone every now and then and makes me remember how special a day it was. It’s hard to explain that feeling of getting promoted as a player, it’s just an inner feeling that I can’t really put into words. You strive to be the best possible person for yourself and the team so to get promoted was the icing on the cake that season. It was obviously the first time in the club’s history that it had happened, so it was a big achievement for everyone. Afterwards we had a few drinks, and players and staff got together and talked about what a memorable season it had been.

A NEW CHALLENGE IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE… There was just excitement going into out first season in the Football League. I knew we had the players to really compete and to win 4-0 on the opening day of season against Southend, it just continued to carry us on that wave. I think our first season in the Football League could be described as a positive one. We blew some teams away and finished above Barrow who of course won the National League when

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

we went up, that was a positive to take. The main goal was to finish as high as possible but really to stay in the league and we did that.

WINNERS AT WEMBLEY, AGAIN… You’re in the moment when winning and it’s a great feeling to win trophies. To go to Wembley twice and win both times, there’s no better feeling. To achieve that at 21 years old as well, I can say I’ve done well but there’s always more to go for as an individual and a team. We know it was upsetting that fans missed out on both Wembley trips, but we had our jobs to do and brought the silverware back to Harrogate each time. continued overleaf...

INJURY FRUSTRATION…

ONE HUNDRED AND COUNTING…

I was picking up little knocks in preseason and that’s not the best as you want to give yourself the best shot to be in the starting XI come the opening day of the campaign. It’s all part of being a footballer though, so it’s about getting on with it and working hard to get back into the team, which I feel I’ve done. I recently picked up another injury and then illness as well which was really frustrating as you never want to miss out, especially after missing three months the previous season. I feel like I’ve now got stronger, fitter and healthier and that can only benefit me.

I try to take each game as they come as each is so important. 100 games though is a nice landmark and you have to strive to do better and aim high. It all starts with working hard in training and putting that into the games and being the best I can.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

You always want to improve and challenge yourself. Right now, that would be to put together 10-15 good games and help the team all I can. For every footballer the goal is to play at the highest level you can, but the focus has to be the present and then the future will sort itself out.

MEET MARK RHODES OUR MATCHDAY VOLUNTEER!

Mark is a key part of our matchday team as he looks after our flagbearers and mascots and helps them create memories that last a lifetime. The role includes meeting and greeting the children and parents, introducing our mascot to the first team players, as well as setting up the half time mini matches plus lots more! We chatted to Mark about why he volunteers with the HTAFC Community Foundation… Why are you personally involved in matchday activities? I have been involved with junior football in the Harrogate area for the last 18 years, as a coach of a junior team I was lucky enough to bring my teams to watch Harrogate on a number of seasons, going back quite a number of years now, those days were always a highlight for players and families alike. For me this is the ideal way to help ensure that many more teams get the chance to have those same experiences. What impact does the matchday experience have on young people? It's a great opportunity for the club to connect with the community and give young players a unique experience to share as a team. Some players may move onto other sports away from football as they get older, but being part of a team and the memories that creates will stay with them. The young players

usually bring family along with them to watch, so we have a perfect opportunity to encourage those groups to come back and support the club in the future, growing the fanbase for the club. The company you work for supports community volunteering. How has this come about? Why do they support this? Are you encouraged to become more involved? My day job is working in IT for Lloyds Banking Group. They’re really keen to encourage all staff to get involved supporting voluntary activities in their local communities, particularly as we resume following the periods of lockdown. As part of that support, we have a charitable foundation for each home nation and that allows me to claim up to £500 per year in support of work undertaken for a registered

20 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

charity such as the Community Foundation, based upon the number of hours I have provided. Do you have a message for anyone else who might be considering volunteering on a matchday or within the community foundation? What are you waiting for, just do it! Aside from the opportunity to support a really great cause or activity, you get chance to use your existing skills alongside developing yourself further. If you’re still not sure, make an enquiry and come along to see what we do and whether it's for you.

MEET CHLOE HICKSON...

One of our community coaches who found out about the opportunity to work with the Community Foundation through the Kickstart Scheme. Chloe plays a big part in delivering our Premier League Primary Stars programme and she also coaches the Town U17 Girls! We sat down to chat with Chloe to find out a little bit more about her role... How did you find out about Kickstart and how has it helped get work with the Foundation? I started by delivering Wildcat sessions and then saw that there was a Kickstart opportunity available and I thought that this would be a good beginning for me to deliver more sessions and gain more experience. What has your role been? My role has been a community coach which involves me delivering and assisting Premier League Primary Stars, Reading Stars and delivering after school clubs within different schools. Working in schools: What have you learned by doing it and what do you enjoy about it? Within just six months of my kickstart, I feel very comfortable to plan and deliver high quality P.E sessions and also to help teachers understand how to deliver high quality lessons to the students.

I really enjoy the opportunity to meet so many different students and making sure that they are thriving and having fun. I’ve had many comments from teachers within schools across Harrogate on how pupils behaviour and confidence has changed massively from the start of delivery. I’ve also seen these changes myself with the majority of kids that I have seen. Do you feel like you’ve grown as a person from undertaking the role? I really do feel I’ve come on a lot. I never thought that I could lead a full class of students all with different ability’s and different year groups, all while being able to ensure that all are engaged and enjoying it. Coaching the Town U17 Girls team: How did that come about and what do you enjoy about it? The opportunity came at the right time as I was looking into coaching

a grassroots football team and this was the perfect. Seeing the girls develop and becoming more confident is the best thing about it. It amazes me to see the pathway setup that these girls can develop onto and to be a part of the development of the girls is brilliant. What opportunities are you looking for in the future and what goals do you have? I want to gain as much knowledge and experience in coaching as possible, as well as gain many more qualifications so I know for future I can expand on delivering in many different areas.

TOWN RUNNERS CONTINUE TO MAKE BIG STRIDES Our biggest ever uptake of new runners started the Town to 5k program on a cold Tuesday evening in early January and the development both mentally and physically since has been amazing to see!

To enhance what has already been a successful programme, our run leader Steve Pattison was delighted when friend Jeff Walker offered his help, experience, and support in leading some of the runs. The Town Runners were also supported by local running shop, Up and Running, who kindly offered our beginners a discount on a new pair of running shoes, socks and the all-important expert advice and gait analysis. The initial 8x one-minute runs in week one soon evolved and in just nine weeks our runners were taking on a first ever 5k at the Fountains Abbey Park run. Our new beginners group has recently started so why not start your Town to 5k journey? For more information on our running groups please contact stevepattison@harrogatetownafc.com

SCOUTING REPORT

Three key men in the Robins' squad to keep a close eye on today...

Jojo Wollacott

Dave Shopland/Shutterstock

Swindon swooped to sign the 25-year-old keeper last summer from Bristol City, after he spent time on loan with the Wiltshire club in the last campaign. Making the number one spot his own at the County Ground, the Ghanaian international had previously spent his whole career at Bristol City rising up through their academy ranks since the age of 14. He was a regular for the Championship outfit at various youth levels but never played for their senior team, instead gaining experience during various loan spells away at Weymouth, Bergsöy, Bath City, Woking, Truro City, Gloucester City and Forest Green Rovers. Jojo will be going to Qatar this winter after helping Ghana to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as his country's No. 1 Goalkeeper.

Attacking midfielder Jack Payne joined the Robins in August 2020 from Lincoln City and has scored 10 goals in 28 league appearances so far this season. Starting his career at Southend United, where he had a breakthrough season during the 2015-16 campaign, scoring nine goals in 35 games, his form earned him a move to Huddersfield Town, but he struggled to establish himself in the Terriers team following their promotion to the Premier League. The 27-year-old spent loan spells at Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers and Bradford City and after his Huddersfield contract ended in 2019, Payne moved to Lincoln where he spent a year before joining Town. James Marsh/Shutterstock

Simon Dael/Shutterstock

Arriving at the County Ground last summer, McKirdy came through the ranks of the Aston Villa academy and has played for a host of EFL clubs including Stevenage, Crewe, Newport, Carlisle, and most recently Port Vale. Boasting an incredible work-rate and the ability to be a huge threat inside the box, as well as being able to make things happen anywhere in the final-third, the 24-year-old has emerged as one of the most dangerous attackers in the division. His versatility across the forward line and his eye for goal have been clear for all to see this season with him top scorer as well as providing most goal assists for the Reds this campaign.

HOMEGROWN HEROES Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles ten notable players who progressed through the ranks at Swindon Town... SAM BURTON

Long-serving goalkeeper Sam Burton was ever-present for Swindon Town in 1954-55 and 1957-58. Born locally, he turned professional at the County Ground in June 1945 and made his League debut in Swindon’s 2-2 draw at home to Reading in November 1946. He contested a first-team slot with Frank Boulton and Norman Uprichard during the early postwar era. Helping Swindon reach the FA Cup fourth round in 1955-56, he also missed just one match in 196061 and played 463 League games until a shoulder injury ended his career in November 1961. He later ran a transport cafe in Lyneham, then retired to Gwent and died in October 2020.

BOBBY WOODRUFF

Attacking midfielder Bobby Woodruff was an important figure in Swindon Town’s 1962-63 promotion success. Signing pro at the County Ground in May 1958, he made his League debut in Swindon’s 2-1 defeat at home to Chesterfield nine months later and helped beat Chelsea en route to the League Cup fourth round in 1963-64. He was noted for his long throws and netted 20 goals in 180 League games before joining Wolves in March 1964. Reunited with Bert Head at Crystal Palace in June 1966, he was twice top scorer and helped reach the top-flight in 1968-69. He later played for Cardiff City and Newport County, then became a probation officer.

26

MIKE SUMMERBEE

Brilliant winger Mike Summerbee was capped eight times by England after leaving Swindon Town. Signing professional at the County Ground in March 1960, he starred in Swindon's 196263 promotion success and was leading marksman and ‘Player of the Year’ in 1964-65. He netted 39 goals in 218 League games prior to joining Manchester City in August 1965, amassing a vast collection of domestic and European honours under the Joe Mercer/Malcolm Allison partnership at Maine Road. Later with Burnley, Blackpool and Stockport County’s playermanager, he became a successful businessman. His son Nicky also starred for Swindon Town.

ERNIE HUNT

England U-23 striker Ernie Hunt was Swindon Town's leading marksman in four successive seasons including their 1962-63 promotion triumph. Born locally, he was a junior at the County Ground and made his League debut in Swindon’s 3-0 defeat at Grimsby six months before turning pro in March 1960. He netted 82 goals in 214 League games prior to joining Wolves in September 1965. Top scorer as they regained top-flight status in 1966-67, he then played for Everton, Coventry City, Doncaster and Bristol City, featuring in their 1973-74 FA Cup run. He ran the Full Pitcher pub in Ledbury, then was a window cleaner and died in June 2018.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

ROGER SMART

Midfielder Roger Smart scored in Swindon Town’s 1969 League Cup final success. Born locally, he turned professional with Swindon in May 1960 and made his League debut in their 1-1 draw at Reading in March 1962. He scored the Robins’ promotion-clinching goal at home to Shrewsbury in May 1963 and helped reach the FA Cup fifth round in 1966-67. November 1980 and March 1983. Later the Robins’ youth-team boss, he was awarded an MBE.

DON ROGERS

England U-23 winger Don Rogers scored twice in Swindon Town's 1969 League Cup final success. Signing professional at the County Ground in October 1962, he featured in Swindon's 1962-63 promotion campaign and was ever-present in four successive seasons. He starred as Swindon won promotion again in 1968-69 and the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1970, reuniting with Bert Head at Crystal Palace in November 1972. Moving to QPR in exchange for Terry Venables in September 1974, he rejoined Swindon in March 1976 and netted 148 goals in 412 League games overall for the Robins, then played for Yeovil Town. He ran his sports shop in Swindon.

DAVID MOSS

Winger David Moss was Swindon Town’s leading marksman in 1976-77. Initially with hometown Witney, he joined Swindon in July

1969 and starred in their 1974-75 promotion near-miss, also helping take eventual winners West Ham to an FA Cup fourth round replay. He moved to Luton Town in May 1978 and was an important figure in their 1981-82 Second Division title triumph. Returning to Swindon Town in July 1985, he netted 60 goals in 234 League games overall for the Robins before hanging up his boots. He later assisted Brian Horton at various clubs and managed Macclesfield, becoming involved with youth development at Liverpool.

England U-21 international striker Paul Rideout was Swindon Town's leading goalscorer in two consecutive seasons. He was Swindon's youngest League player at 16 years 107 days against Hull City in November 1980 and netted 38 goals in 95 League games while at the County Ground before joining Aston Villa in June 1983. Moving via Italian club Bari to Southampton in July 1988, he rejoined Swindon on loan in March 1991. He had spells with Notts County and Glasgow Rangers prior to joining Everton in August 1992 and was an FA Cup winner in 1995. Currently his fifth campaign as an EFL referee, this is Scott Oldham's second visit to the EnviroVent Stadium this season having previously officiated Town's 2-1 FA Cup win over Wrexham in November. Harrogate Town Ladies got back to winning ways with an emphatic 11-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday to keep them in second place. Town started brightly with Nat Eustance opening the scoring in the fourth minute, volleying home after a Hannah Freibach flick on from a Becky Wilson corner. Town then continued to force the pressure but couldn’t find the quality in the final third to add to the score. Despite Wednesday rarely entering Town’s half, a mix-up at the back saw the visitors striker rolling the ball into an empty net for 1-1. Town stepped it up and Freibach instantly replied to make it 2-1 from the edge of the box, coolly slotting the ball past the keeper. Rach McDonald’s perfectly weighted long ball saw Teagan Sorokan bring the ball down and make it 3-1. Town continued to dominate and four goals came just before half time - Freibach grabbing her second as she raced past the defenders and calmly placed the ball past the keeper. Rebecca Jeffels then played the ball down the line for Freibach to drive into the box before squaring to Sorokan who made it 5-1. Cass Lane then got in on the act with a super strike lobbing the keeper from 35 yards! After half time, Town increased their lead when Hannah Freibach grabbed her hattrick from the penalty spot after being brought down by the keeper. Nat Eustance then scored her second with

another long range effort into the top corner. Becky Wilson then followed suit as her effort from 25 yards flew into the top corner to make it 9-1. Cass Lane then grabbed Town's tenth after great combination play between Holly Sornat, Teagan Sorokan and Becky Wilson. Finally, Hannah Freibach volleyed home her fourth from a corner to make it 11-1. A great way to get back to winning ways for Town, after a tough few weeks of injury and illness.
