THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER

Good afternoon and welcome to The EnviroVent Stadium for the final time this season as we bring our 2021/22 League Two season to a close. It’s been long season with ups and downs along the way and when reflecting on it initially, we were disappointed that we’ve finished in the bottom half. However, when looking at the statistics and taking a less emotional viewpoint, we can see that we haven’t had a lot of good players available for important chunks of season and that hurt us. I think we’ve got to give credit to the lads for the start they made which ultimately sealed the deal and kept us away from the bottom two spots. Being realistic, the aim of our first couple years in this league was to establish ourselves and we can be proud to say we’ve done that. Picking out highlights from this season, I’d say winning against Portsmouth in the FA Cup is right up there. It was fabulous how we played that day against a very good side and a big club. That match just showed what we’re capable of on our day and to win late on, added to the thrill. Both games against Bradford were also great moments and were wins we needed. It was as big a highlight as any to see 700 of our supporters relentlessly singing at Valley Parade and outsinging a home crowd, many of whom will have seen Bradford in the Premier League. We were so proud of the fans and I think the expressions on player’s and staff’s faces after the game showed it. That night was a clear indication that the club is growing. It's also been a season of growth off the pitch and it’s been great to see the improvements made and the structures put in place for the Club to continue to evolve. There has been tough moments during the campaign but everyone held their nerve and as a result of that, there’s more pride than ever to wear the badge. The last couple of results have helped reenergise the group and reaffirmed that when we pass it well, we can beat anybody, like we did last week

against Forest Green. We need to have belief in how we want to play and be confident going into next season of implementing our style of play. I think we can all be excited for the summer and the plans we have in place. Finally, I want to finish my notes talking about Lloyd Kerry who will play his last game on Saturday. I’m not one to let my guard down too often but I think this Saturday will be an emotional one as me and Lloyd go back a long way. I remember vividly the night I went to watch him play for Tamworth and picturing what he’d look like in our team. What he’s done for the Club since and what he’s achieved has been remarkable and he’s been a credit to himself, his family and Harrogate Town. Lloyd’s played through different cycles of teams and stood out in each one because of his dedication, attitude and desire to win. He has such battling qualities, reads the game so well and it’s why he’s won so many second balls over the years. I’ve said to a few people in the past that you have to go through many different gears to reach Lloyd’s state of mind and him alongside Josh Falkingham formed that midfield duo, who without, we may never have achieved what we did. His legendary status will no doubt grow in the next few years and today he deserves a great send off. Enjoy the game and thank you for all your support this season.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM

Today marks the final day of the season and also the final game for my mate Lloyd Kerry, who I’ve had the privilege of playing with over the last five years.

Going way back to the start in the National League North, Lloydy had a massive injury and was out for pretty much the whole of that year. Although I didn’t play much with him that season, his professionalism and dedication was outstanding to overcome the dark times and return in time for the play-off final, helping to sure things up alongside me to get the win against Brackley and achieve our first promotion together. There’s been so many great memories playing alongside Lloydy and I’ve always kid-on that I’m the same size as him but he’ll tell me he’s much bigger, so there’s been a great relationship between the two of us off the pitch as well. I’ll always joke about wanting to score more goals than him but he probably has the last laugh with his goal against Bradford during our first season in the Football League. However, I think the real standout moments that we can share were the games at Wembley Stadium. Lloydy was unbelievable in the FA Trophy Final but I think in the Playoff Final against Notts County has to be the standout day. We played together in midfield and were both on top of our games and were able to control the middle of the park in the biggest game of our lives. It was an amazing day and to share that moment with him, it was incredible. He should be so proud of his career as it’s been an amazing one and he can look back on it knowing he’s achieved a lot. He played for his boyhood Club at Chesterfield and then managed to lift silverware more than once which is something a lot of footballers never get the chance to do. I’m hoping he can go out on a real high this Saturday and after scoring in his final away game last weekend, I really wouldn’t be surprised to see him bag another in

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

his last appearance and it makes me smile just thinking about that. If that were to happen, it’ll no doubt be an incredible moment for him and his family, but no matter what, he’ll get the ovation he deserves as he's been a huge part of this football Club. After he hangs up his boots, Lloyd will start the next chapter of his career with the Club and it’s a great opportunity for him. I wish him all the luck in the world and I’m sure he’ll smash the new role. Knowing the type of character Lloyd is, and him knowing the Club and what’s expected, there’s nobody better for the job. He’ll do amazing for us and continue to play a huge part in pushing this Club forward. He will be missed in the dressing room as he’s always in and amongst it but we’d love to end the season with a win for him. He’s been an amazing guy to have in the dressing room, had an impeccable attitude, been a role model to the group and someone you can only learn from and admire. I’ll be hoping Saturday goes exactly how he’d want it to.

LLOYD

KERRY

Nine clubs, over 350 appearances, 40 plus goals, three pieces of silverware and club legend status at Harrogate Town. For Lloyd Kerry, a footballing career which began in 2006 comes to an end on Saturday as the midfielder hangs up his boots and gets set to start his next chapter. For one last time, we chat to Lloyd Kerry as a Harrogate Town player and look back at what has been a truly unforgettable career… Lloyd’s story began in a small, North East Derbyshire Town in Chesterfield called Clay Cross, where the Manchester United fan grew up and found his love for football. The idols were the likes of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and in particular, Roy Keane - which explains a lot for the playstyle Lloyd soon adopted. At the age of eight years old, Lloyd was catching the eye of his local club Chesterfield FC and he was soon involved in trials for their Centre of Excellence.

10

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Lloyd explains how he battled it out with a large pool of other kids looking to earn their spot with the at the time Football League club. “My dad couldn’t take me to the trials so my dad’s mate took me and there must have been about 100 kids on this pitch, but I managed to get all the way through and into the team. I had two years with them from age 10-12 and then went to Sheffield United, signing at U12s level.”

#ProudToBeTown

“I always had that fire in me for a hard-hitting tackle and was probably worst for it as a kid,” he chuckles. “There’s always been a buzz for me to get into a crunching tackle and when I was younger, I’d get excited about coming up against bigger players and testing myself. Being small, I had to make up for it in some way. I learnt a lot during my academy days and it didn’t just help me with my development football-wise, but also as a person.” Lloyd continues, “I was from a place in Clay Cross on a council estate, so I wasn’t given anything, I had to work hard for it and being in the footballing environment at Sheffield, it gave me structure and discipline.” By the time Lloyd had reached the end of his school years, he was already training with the Sheffield United youth squad, spending Fridays with the team instead of in the classroom. He was told early he’d be getting a scholarship and it set him up on the pathway to venture towards the Blades’ first team. After completing his scholarship, Lloyd then signed a two-year professional deal at Sheffield United. However, competition for places in the youth set-up was incredibly strong and there needed to be two reserve teams just to cater for the amount of talent that couldn't break into the first team. Lloyd admits that he “never felt close” to being around that group and so looked for loan options to gain experience. An opportunity came his way in 2007 when Keith Curle took over at Torquay and with his links to Sheffield United, it saw Kerry and a couple more young Blades make their way south for their first taste of League football at the age of 18. “It was a long way away from home but I loved being in and around a first-team environment,” Lloyd recalls. “I made my league debut with them and scored my first professional goal, so it was a really memorable time.”

Lloyd would stay with the Blades for six years, playing with the likes of Kyle Naughton, Matt Lowton and Kyle Walker - three players who have all found success in England’s elite division. Looking back on his time with the South Yorkshire Academy, the midfielder believes those years taught him “discipline” but didn’t take away that feisty, hard-hitting edge that he would become renowned for.

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

His loan with The Gulls lasted just over a month though, when a foot injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season. However, a year later the midfielder found himself out on loan again but this time with his boyhood club, Chesterfield FC. The loan was originally meant to last just a month in February but was extended until the end of the season, and he then signed permanently in the summer of 2008 as a young Lloyd Kerry continued to impress in front of the Spireites support. “To play for my hometown club was massive and it was exciting for me,” Lloyd explains. “Being a local lad, I felt the eyes were on me and so the pressure was on me to do well.”

In his first season, Lloyd did just that, featuring over 30 times and getting on the scoresheet. The following campaign, however, Chesterfield changed manager and he didn’t take a fancy to Lloyd, which he acknowledges “happens in football”. Nonetheless, it meant Lloyd was now in the worrying position of not knowing where his next move would lead him and with a young family, it left him with decisions to make. “It was one of the lowest points of my career,” Lloyd concedes. "I’d gone from playing week in, week out to suddenly not knowing where I’d be next. It was a difficult season and hated the monthlong loan at Alfreton as it just didn’t work out. I then joined Kidderminster on loan and it was a good setup there but the travel was just too much for me and so wasn’t the right fit when they offered me a contract that summer." “I dropped down to Hinckley Town in the National League North which was part-time football and that was a massive shock for me. We’d just had our first child, so I needed an income to look after my family and looking back, I probably rushed into the move but it was a club where I was guaranteed game time.” During his two years with the Leicestershire side, Lloyd played regular football and picked up accolades including Players’ Player of the Season and Fans Player of the Season. However, financial difficulties at the club meant Lloyd needed to leave if he were to get back into full-time football. The midfielder got his move in July 2012, signing for Tamworth who were in the Conference League at the time. Two more good seasons saw Kerry rack up another 60+ appearances and that sparked the interest of Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver. Both the Manager and Chairman attended a Tuesday night game in which Lloyd played incredibly well, scoring the winning goal and winning man of the match. That was the moment Simon Weaver knew he wanted Lloyd Kerry in his midfield and he signed his first deal with Town in Summer of 2014. “When I first signed, the club had just started work on one of the stands behind the goals and everything was completely different,” Lloyd recalls. “We were part-time and trained at Wetherby Rugby Club on the field but the move felt right for me. There was the ambition to go

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

full time and become a league club, and although looking back you could say every manager would tell you that and have those ambitions, I genuinely thought it was a club going in the right direction.” Surprisingly though, it wasn’t the smoothest of starts for Lloyd at Town as he struggled to nail down a spot in his first season. It resulted in a short-term loan to Hednesford in January 2015 and then crunch talks with the manager at the end of the season. A conversation between the two ended with Simon Weaver telling Lloyd to come back in pre-season and “show him what he’s got”. It was a challenge Lloyd accepted and he came back that summer with a point to prove. He didn’t get back into the team straight away but slowly enough, Lloyd managed to win the manager over and soon became an important player for Town. That season saw Town finish fourth in the National League North and a spot in the playoffs, and although not succeeding in their promotion attempt, it looked like a clear sign of progression. The summer saw a 3G pitch laid at Wetherby Road and the introduction of training on Mondays for the part-time outfit. The 2016-17 campaign, however, proved to be an underwhelming one with Weaver’s side finishing mid-table, and for Lloyd, it proved to be a nightmare season as he suffered two serious injuries.

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I

13

Town’s 3-0 victory that saw them reach the National League.

The first came against Halifax in August 2016, when a painful collision saw Lloyd fracture his cheekbone and eye socket. “It’s not a great memory, to be honest,” Lloyd says. “I remember the pain hitting me once I got into the changing room and I just collapsed on the medical bed. I got taken in an ambulance to the hospital and needed a brain scan and all sorts. The Gaffer and Rach went with me and it shows what great people they are and how football very quickly becomes the secondary." The midfielder didn’t return to action until December and then played the next couple of months with a face mask, which supporters quickly sought to make a new trend in the terraces. Having returned to action at the start of 2017, Lloyd’s season was then cut short in March when adjusting his leg to avoid the referee, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), as well as damaging his medial ligament and cartilage. It was a sucker punch for Lloyd who was now expected to miss a further nine months of football. During his summer of rehab, the club went full time and with Lloyd still under contract, he became part of a new look of Harrogate Town team which saw the likes of Josh Falkingham and George Thomson join the ranks. It was a season which saw Town go from strength to strength as they reached the playoff finals against Brackley Town at Wetherby Road. Lloyd had just about got himself back to full fitness by this point and played the entire second half of

14

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

“I had a good game and played a part in the promotion, which was nice as all the hard work getting back from the ACL injury had paid off," Lloyd says. “The recruitment that season was brilliant with the likes of Falks and Thommo adding to the squad, and because we did get promoted, the momentum was there and we had the belief we could go again. That mentality is infectious and so every time we stepped onto the pitch, we thought we’d win. At that time, I think a real close-knit group was being formed which is so important to have.” Town would go on to have a remarkable debut season in the National League as they went unbeaten in their first 11 games and secured a spot in the playoffs in their first attempt. They faced Fylde once again but lost out to the Coasters who would become finalists that season. The start of the 2019/20 campaign would have suggested that Town struggled to get over that disappointment, with the side making an indifferent start to their second campaign in the division. It was also a tough start for Lloyd who damaged ankle ligaments in just the third game of the season and that kept him on the sidelines until December. “Looking back, it was a bad injury,” Lloyd states. “During that time when I was injured, I remember going to watch the lads at Halifax and in that game, we won 1-0 and it seemed to be the turning point for us as we went on a really good run.” Lloyd returned to action during a pivotal Christmas period that saw Town pick up 12 out of a possible 15 points, and by early March, Town were just four points of league leaders Barrow, still needing to play the title challengers. Covid-19 then brought an abrupt halt to the season but it led to a memorable day at Wembley that saw Town reach the Football League for the first time in their history.

“When playoffs were announced, the atmosphere on the Zoom call quickly changed but we knew we had to be right on it,” Lloyd recalls. “We pretty much had a mini pre-season and got so fit and it was clear to see in the semi-final against Boreham Wood. We were so sharp and weren’t willing to let the chance of going to Wembley slip away." “As a kid that had been the dream (to play at Wembley),” he continues. “Once that had become a reality, the thought begins to creep in that we’re just one game away from the Football League and the final was probably the biggest game in all our careers, so that’s pressure straight away. If you look back at all the big games, this group of players does do well under pressure so I was confident we’d win." “We’ve made history with this Football Club and a real sense of pride comes with it, especially for me as the journey hasn’t been the smoothest. I felt I deserved to be a part of it because of that. For the Club, it was massive and deserved for a great group of people.” Going into Town’s first season in the Football League, they were back in action not too long after the celebrations from promotion had started to calm down. Lloyd would go on to score in the Club’s first-ever EFL match, which came at Prenton Park in the Carabao Cup, and the 33-year-old then produced a goal in Town’s opening League Two game away at Southend. The fairy tale story for Lloyd was really taking shape and he then went on to score the only goal in Town’s derby victory against Bradford City at Valley Parade, in front of the Sky Sports camera. They were moments that no one will be forgetting any time soon. “If you look at my footballing journey; I started as a League Two player, dropped down to nonLeague and then got back to where it all started. To score that goal on the opening day of the season, you could see the relief on my face in the photos and videos. Bradford away is also one of my favourite individual moments since being here. With the game being on Sky, my family watching, it being a derby game and to score the winner, that memory has to be right up there for me.” Summing up that first season in League Two, Lloyd says a “learning curve” would be the best way to describe it. However, that season ended on a high as Town secured safety in the division and also lifted silverware at Wembley again, this time in the FA Trophy.

16

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

It was a game set up to be a banana skin as a Football League side faced non-League opposition. Nonetheless, Town “got the job done” and Lloyd could boast back-to-back wins at Wembley, as well as feeling extra joy for his teammate in the centre of the park, Josh Falkingham, who scored the winner. “I always have a bit of banter with Falks as I usually score more often than him,” Lloyd says with a smile. “We got back to the National League North days and we’ve had a great partnership in midfield and both have that feisty style of play. We also have a good relationship off the pitch, so I was buzzing for him to score and he’ll still mention it now, and rightly so. I must say though that it was a shame the fans couldn’t be there with us as it was something they deserved for all the support they’ve shown over the years and because they had already missed out on Wembley before. “When I first joined there were about 300 fans, so it’s really built up over the years and the fans have been great with me. The core group have seen me grow over that spell and I’ve felt a strong connection with them. They see I give everything on the pitch and play for the badge, so I can’t thank them enough, really.” At the start of this season, Lloyd says there were no thoughts in his mind of retiring but going into the final year of his contract and becoming more of a “squad player”, he knew he’d have to assess his options sooner rather than later.

and Lloyd about the potential new role of Head of Player Recruitment, with the main aim being to identify new players that would improve both the first team and academy. For Lloyd, it was a decision that needed little thought, even though it meant calling an end to his playing career.

Before any real decisions were to be made though, there was a lot of football to be played and the standout moment for Lloyd was the FA Cup Second Round where Town beat Portsmouth at Fratton Park to reach the third round for the first time. It was a game where The Yorkshire side were huge underdogs but put in a display that deserved everything they got. “I was buzzing when I was told I’d be starting against Portsmouth and again, it was a massive, massive game for the Club,” Lloyd says. “I don’t think I had played many minutes that month before the game but played well the week before in the Swindon game. It’s all about getting the Club into the history books and I think the pressure was off the group that day. However, the belief in the changing room before the game was that we genuinely thought we’d win and that was probably my best showing of the season. “The celebrations with the fans at full time were brilliant and on the coach back home we all had a great moment with the Chairman who joined us at the back and was quite emotional. This Club wouldn't be where it is without him, so it was nice to give something back.” Not too long after that incredible result, a conversation was held between Simon Weaver

18

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

“I felt like I still had a lot to give and probably could have carried on playing but with my injuries and waking up with a niggle nearly every day, I had to evaluate my choices,” the long-serving Town midfielder admits. “To stay at this club was the big thing for me but the hardest part was to say I’ll stop playing. I spoke to my wife straight away and explained the situation and we both felt the exact same way about it. The new role is a great opportunity to stay in the game, to stay at the club that I love and also take on a role that really excites me.” This Saturday, Lloyd will get the send-off he deserves. A player who has given his all for the Club, achieved promotions and won silverware with, and ultimately, become a legend at Harrogate Town. “It’s been an up and down rollercoaster,” Lloyd says in his closing remarks. “I’ve probably had more downs than ups when I look back at it but with my mentality, I’ve kept going and I can say a lot of my best moments have come with Harrogate Town. That’s why I wanted to stay at this club. The ups have been big ups, I’ve had some great memories and been lucky enough to fulfil my boyhood dream of being a professional footballer, so I can be satisfied with the career I've had.

THANK YOU

LLOYD...

His form over the years has been so consistent, racking up 100s of games for us and playing in our biggest games. He was outstanding in both play-off finals and the FA Trophy. Even looking at this year against Portsmouth in the FA Cup, Lloyd was just a man possessed. In footballing terms, we’ll miss him being in the squad and he’s without doubt a club legend in my eyes and in many people's who have followed Harrogate Town over the years.

Well done on your career and all the best in your new venture. It’s been a pleasure to spend the last seven seasons with you and we’ve had some real highs during that time. Every setback you’ve had, you’ve bounced back from and you’ve been an absolute credit to the club. I’m glad we still get to see your face around the place, although the playing squad will miss you. All the best. Warren Burrell

Congratulations on a fantastic career. You were a great team mate and I loved playing you. A great lad on the pitch and off the pitch, and it’s fantastic what you’ve done for Harrogate as well. Enjoy your retirement but enjoy the next part of your career and next step of your life as well. Hope to catch you soon.

Congrats on your career, Lloyd. We’ve worked together for almost 10 years now and I’m looking forward to having you on the staff team as opposed to strapping your ankles, picking your face and knees up off the floor and having to touch your feet every day. Good luck in your new role and let’s get you some staff kit.

Kerry mate, congrats on an unbelievable career. There’s been some great achievements and great memories from the time we’ve spent together on the pitch, in hotel rooms, car schools and everything else. All the best in your new role - you deserve it.

Congratulations on an incredible career. You’re one of the best players to put on a Harrogate Town shirt, not to mention Hednesford. You should be so proud. You’ve comeback from some really tough injuries and been the model pro the entire time, never losing the fire. We had a great seven seasons together, made some amazing memories and it was a pleasure to play with you. All the best with your retirement.

I’ve had the pleasure to share the changing room with you for five years and you’re not only a great lad in the changing room but a great player on the pitch as well. Good luck in your next chapter, I’m sure you’ll smash it. You’ll be missed by me and all the other lads but we’ll keep in touch. All the best, mate. Mark Beck

FROM THE VAULTS Our Club historian Phil Harrison delves into the archives to take a look at memorable past Town matches.

On Saturday 29 October 1966, Wetherby Road saw the first ever Harrogate League Premier Division dual between Harrogate Town and Harrogate Railway Reserves which ended in a 3-3 draw. Peter Foxton, Phil Harrison (aged 17!) and Tony Kendrew scored for Town with Ken Blackstone (2) and Ray Harrap scoring for Rail. Town: Vause, Barlow, Wilkinson, Kendrew, Reavely, Wright, Foxton, Gibbins, Fall, Fothergill, Harrison. Rail: Georgeson, Tiffney, Tyson, Court, Anderson, Harrap, Kirkbridge, Thompson, Blackstone, Robinson, Everitt.

Saturday 5 November saw substitutes used for the first time in all Yorkshire league and cup games and Town’s sub was Dave Abdellah. However, Dave Wilkinson was the first in the F.A. Amateur Cup at Brook Sports on 22 Oct 1966.

Peter Gunby OBE

Top: Two of the Town scorers Phil Harrison (left) and Peter Foxton (right). Bottom: Town keeper David Vause (left) and Rail’s Geoff Thompson (right) a future Town player.

In March, all at Harrogate Town AFC were saddened to learn about the passing of Peter Gunby OBE, at the age of 87. A very popular figure at Wetherby Road, Peter played for the successful side of the early 1960s, then returned to the club in 1971/72 as player/manager/captain. During two spells at Town 1959-64 and 1971-77, he played 291 games making him 12th highest in the all time list of appearances. He returned again as coaching consultant 2000/01 and came to the 2014 Town Centenary celebrations. He loved his football - in fact he brought his boots to one game when the supporters club played a Town XI in May 2016 but only kicked the game off which was a disappointment for him. Apart from Harrogate, Gunby played three games for Bradford City 56/57, was a coach at Huddersfield Town and Leeds United and had two short spells as caretaker manager 1985 and 1988 at Elland Road. He also oversaw the transformation of former Town Chairman Bill Fotherby’s former house into accommodation for young academy players to live in and his work throughout football was honoured when he was awarded an OBE in 2007. Rest in Peace Peter. By Phil Harrison 24 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

TEAM TALK ROUTE ONE

Harrogate Town Club Chaplin Rob Brett chats to John Wallace, Trustee of the mental health charity Mind in Harrogate District (MiHD) about their new initiative Route One to Wellness... RB: I am delighted to introduce John Wallace, Trustee of the mental health charity Mind in Harrogate District (MiHD). John, please can you tell us more about Route One to Wellness. JW: Route One to Wellness is an innovative collaboration between four mental health and wellbeing charities in Harrogate District. These four organisations are linked by the Route One bus service, hence the name. RB: Thanks John, who are the charities involved? JW: Orb Community Enterprise, MIND in Harrogate, Claro Enterprises and Wellspring Therapy and Training work together under the Route One to Wellness Partnership. RB: Who is Route One to Wellness aiming to help? JW: Route One to Wellness has been created to provide support for the residents of Harrogate and district experiencing or at risk of poor mental health. The support available includes general wellbeing services such as mindfulness and relaxation, through to skills development and creativity, and counselling sessions and bereavement support.

26

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

John Wallace and Helen Greensit (Service Manager for Mind in Harrogate)

RB: How do fans and their family and friends access these services? JW: The Route One partnership works with local GP practices and with health & social care providers to ensure those who need it get the right support, in the right place and at the right time. Every GP practice now has a ‘Social Prescriber’ who can refer directly to Route One to Wellness, so you can go directly through your local surgery. RB: Thanks John. In footballing terms “route one” is going direct and it sounds like the Route One to Wellness partnership offers direct support for those experiencing or at risk of poor mental health. The last few years have been really tough and it is great to know that this support is available.

JOSH FALKINGHAM NAMED 2021/22 HTAFC COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Josh, who received the award last week, has been a strong advocate of the work undertaken by Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation since his arrival at the Club in 2017. He understands and recognises the impact he and his fellow players can have in inspiring and empowering fans and residents alike. His role this season as PFA Representative has been hugely influential in leading by example, acting as a role model for young players and senior players. One of Josh’s biggest strengths is his communication, throughout the year key community messages and engagements have been shared by Josh, following up on players availability and re-enforcing the importance of players being involved with the community. He has also expressed a desire to become more involved with helping the Club grow and develop into the future. A prime example took place over Christmas where playing staff called older or vulnerable season ticket holders for a catch up, whether this was talking about health, life or football! Over 120 people were called, with players genuinely enjoying the experience. Josh’s enthusiasm and passion encouraged other players to see the power that they can have as role models and what it means to local people. This award is fully deserved he is not just a Team captain but a Club captain and one that we are very happy to have associated with the Foundation. Josh said: “I’m very thankful and grateful for the

award and the more we can do in the community and the closer we can make that bond between the players and supporters, the better it is for everyone associated with Harrogate Town Football Club and the Town itself. When we go out and see the younger fans and their faces light up, it’s brilliant to see. The Community is huge for us and we see ourselves as a community Club, the special relationship we have is only going to grow and get better and we’re all so excited for what’s to come.” John Hudson PFA – Director of Corporate Social Responsibility: “The PFA has been immensely proud of the outstanding efforts of players during a very difficult season once again and we feel they should be recognised for their support and involvement in the local community. The Award will hopefully raise awareness of the importance many of our members attach to their roles off the pitch and highlight their commitment to support those most in need during the pandemic. We would like to offer our congratulations to this season’s recipient of the 2021/22 PFA Community Champion Award.”

Matt Gray’s first signing as Sutton manager in May 2019 having finished the previous season as leading scorer for Worthing, scoring sixteen goals in the Isthmian League. An exciting striker or winger whose pace is a real threat, he played at Under 23 level for Brighton and Millwall before joining Worthing at the start of the 2018-19 season. Named in the National League Team of the Season last season, the 23-year-old made his 100th Sutton appearance earlier this campaign and currently tops the club's goal scoring charts with eight goals and five assists so far this term. Dave Shopland/Shutterstock

The 28-year-old defender was a member of the Sutton reserve and youth teams before joining Crawley, from where he returned to Gander Green Lane on loan in January 2014 before signing on a permanent basis at the start of the following season. He went on to make over 100 appearances for Sutton, winning two England C caps, before joining League Two Cambridge United in summer 2018. After 22 appearances at the Abbey Stadium, he returned to Sutton in November 2019, initially on loan before signing a contract the following January, and made his 150th appearance for the club last season, finishing the campaign being voted Players’ Player of the Year. Loius has stepped in to captain the side in the abscence of Craig Eastmond.

Signed in summer 2020 having played for Melbourne City in his native Australia for the previous four years. After playing junior football in Australia he joined Liverpool and played for their U18 and reserve sides, and also had a loan spell with Accrington Stanley before joining Oldham, where he spent two seasons. After a brief spell with Greek club Aris he returned to Australia and Western Sydney Wanderers before joining Melbourne City in 2016. He has represented Australia at U17, U20 and U23 level, and also Greece, who he is eligible to play for through his parents, at U19 level. He made his 100th appearance for Sutton at the end of March.
