THE MANAGER
SIMON WEAVER After some time away and some much needed rest, we’re back at the EnviroVent Stadium as we begin our pre-season fixtures against League One side Sheffield Wednesday. It’ll be a huge test for the team but one we’re all looking forward to. We came back from Loughborough University on Wednesday following a pre-season camp and it was an excellent few days there. All the lads worked really, really hard and the fitness levels are really high right now. It’s been competitive in the running and with the ball at their feet, which bodes well going into the upcoming games. We’ve made a fair few signings so far and new players have settled in quite easily and have had a good laugh between themselves. They’re all becoming friends straight away which is great and what we need after adding new faces to the group. This pre-season we’re coming up against some big teams with quality in abundance. The likes of Rotherham, Barnsley and Huddersfield will all be visiting the EnviroVent Stadium along with Sheffield Wednesday and it’ll no doubt test us, which I think is important. Pre-season, however, can be a funny one as you can have a fantastic pre-season but not necessarily take that forward into the actual season. Our main
4
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC PRE-SEASON PROGRAMME
focus – especially with all the injuries we had last year - is to take good care of the lads, get them as fit as possible and try get them through pre-season unscathed. We need to build that bond and collectivity between the lads and so far, so good. The lads are training their hearts out and hopefully we can put that into the games. We’re all so excited to get back into the EnviroVent Stadium to see the fans and we know how important your support will be again going into the new campaign. It’s a season we can all really look forward to and the possibilities are endless when we all push in the same direction. Enjoy the games and thank you for your support.

THE CAPTAIN
JOSH FALKINGHAM Good evening and welcome back to the EnviroVent Stadium for the first time in a couple of months! Players, staff and fans have all had our little break from football during the off season but we’re now back and ready to get going ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. All the lads are back in pre-season training but for myself it’s been a frustrating time as I broke down before the final game of last season and ended up needing surgery on a stress fracture in my foot. It was extra frustrating as it turned out to be a different injury to the one I picked up in March earlier this year. It’s meant the majority of my off season has seen my foot in a protective boot and it’ll be a total of 12 weeks before being able to get back playing. It means I won’t be back fit for any of the pre-season games but it’s still been great to be back around the squad, who are in great spirits. There’s been a lot of faces who have left the squad and a lot of new ones that have come into the group. It’s part and parcel of football, however, and although I’ll miss the lads who, some, I’ve played with for the past five seasons, the new lads bring freshness, excitement and gives the remaining lads another desire to push on again. There are standards on and off the pitch that need to be
6

met and the lads have all got on board with that straight away and have settled really well. Hopefully they can make us stronger, fitter and better going into the new season. Although I won’t be available for the preseason games, they’re still getting me really excited and I think it’ll be a great challenge for the lads out on the pitch against some big Yorkshire Clubs. I’ve always enjoyed testing myself against teams in higher leagues as you get a good indication as to where we’re at, and I’m sure the lads will relish the opportunity and so will the fans. Finally, going into the new season, I think progression is what we need to focus on. We weren’t happy with our finishing position last season and I think we can say it was a season of two halves. We’ve got to learn lessons that’ll help us drive forward and push on nearer the business end of the table come the end of the season. That’s what we’ll be striving to do. Enjoy the pre-season fixtures and thank you for your support.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW RECRUITS
Town have been busy over the Summer and in this special pre-season programme, we’re profiling each of our new signings so far...
PETE JAMESON
Age: 29 Position: Goalkeeper No: 21 Goalkeeper Pete Jameson arrived at Town in May 2022, after he earned promotion to the National League with York City, keeping 19 clean sheets in 56 appearances for the Minstermen.
Anna Gowthorpe/Shutterstock
Born in Sunderland, the 29-year-old stands at 6ft3 and before spending the last three seasons at the North Yorkshire side, Jameson had spent time at Blyth Spartans, Darlington, Sunderland RCA, South Shields (loan), and Consett. Jameson was named in the National League North Team of the Season in his first campaign in Yorkshire and turned down a move to The National League in 2021 in order to stay and help York earn promotion. In that final season - in which he played every minute the shot stopper saved a penalty in the play-off semi final vs Brackley to see his side through to the final. Here’s what Simon Weaver had to say on Pete's arrival at the EnviroVent Stadium… “We’ve been tracking Pete for some time and he’s a really good all-round keeper. His shot stopping has been superb, he’s a good size, commands his box, kicks well and so brings a lot to the table. He’s played a major role in York’s success this season and we’re delighted to bring him to Harrogate. We know we’ve signed a really good lad as well. We do some digging on characters and he’s spot on. As soon as we met him, we thought he had a really good way about him and I’m sure he’ll do well for us."

JOE MATTOCK
Age: 32 Position: Defender No: 3 The 32-year-old arrived at the EnviroVent Stadium last month with a wealth of Football League experience under his belt, having featured for Leicester City, West Brom, Sheffield United, Portsmouth, Brighton and Hove Albion, Sheffield Wednesday and most recently Rotherham United. The defender was part of West Brom’s 2009/10 promotion winning team, as well as winning promotion to the Championship twice with Rotherham as well as winning the Papa John’s Trophy last season. He has racked up over 200 appearances for the Millers over the last seven seasons at the New York Stadium. The left-footed defender can play as either a full back or centre half and takes pride in being “aggressive” with his defending. Mattock has also represented England at u17, u19 and u21 level and is closing in on 500 career appearances. Here’s what the Gaffer had to say on Joe's arrival at the EnviroVent Stadium…

“He’s versatile, mobile, got so much quality about him on the pitch and he’ll be just as important for us off it so, he’s going to help the players already at the club and adds another good leader to the group. You can tell by meeting him and from everyone’s feedback just how hungry a player he is, hungry to train well and win in games, he’s an absolute winner and we’re delighted to have him at the club.” www.harrogatetownafc.com I

KYLE FERGUSON
Age: 22 Position: Defender No 24 In June, Town were delighted to welcome 6ft5 defender Kyle Ferguson to the EnviroVent Stadium. At the age of 22, Ferguson is very much in the early days of his footballing career but has already played football in America, Sweden, Ireland and most recently England with National League outfit Altrincham, where he signed in February 2022. Although spending a short time in England’s fifth division, the young Scotsman boasted some impressive statistics, including winning 87% of his aerial duels – the best in the division. Manager Simon Weaver believes Ferguson can have a big impact on the team’s defence. “I’ve watched every minute of Kyle at Altrincham and we’re convinced he can go from strength to strength. He will add height and presence, but he’s also mobile, which are qualities you rarely see together. He has shown great desire in his young career so far to really kick on in the game, he’s been prepared to move out of his comfort zone and play in different countries, we’re confident he’s on an upward trajectory and look forward to seeing that progress continue with us.”
MATTY DALY
Age: 21 Position: Attacking Midfield No: 28 Matty Daly joined Town on a season long loan from Huddersfield Town after the 21-year-old enjoyed productive loan spells in League Two last season, first with Hartlepool United, then Bradford City. During Daly’s first loan spell with Pools, the attacking midfielder won a lot of admirers, providing seven goals and departed in January as the club’s top scorer. After 27 appearances, Daly was recalled in January and would spend the remainder of the season gaining more first team experience at Bradford City. Born in Stockport, Daly was on the books at Everton before joining The Terriers in 2015, making his Premier League debut in April 2019. He has also been capped at U17 and U18 level for England, featuring in the 2018 UEFA European U17 Championships and is a player to excite the fans according to Simon Weaver. “Matty is a really aware footballer in terms of where the space is and where he can receive the ball in dangerous areas and then go and hurt teams. He’s very calm and composed at the business end of the field, that’s why he’s here and we’re excited to have him. I think he will get people off their seats this season, if we get him in the right areas where he can be as creative as he wants and a real goalscoring threat." 12

STEPHEN DOOLEY
Age: 30 Position: Midfield No: 22 Stephen Dooley, who can play central or wide midfield, joined from Rochdale on a two-year deal in June and adds EFL experience to the squad. The 30-year-old’s career began in 2010 with Northern Irish side Coleraine before moving to America to play for Loyola Greyhounds. Dooley then returned to Coleraine in 2013 before signing for Derry in 2014 and then Cork City in 2016. A third spell with Coleraine followed in 2017 before he joined Rochdale in May 2018. Dooley would go on to make 137 appearances for the Dale, featuring as a versatile midfielder for the Lancashire outfit. The Northern Irishman also represented his country at u17 and u19 level. Dooley caught the eye of Simon Weaver in both League games against Rochdale last season and was delighted to capture a third transfer target of the window.
14

“We’ve watched a lot of coverage of Stephen, we noticed him actually in the first game of last season when he played a part in both Rochdale’s goals against us, he’s extremely calm and composed on the ball. As well as wanting to add physicality this Summer, we also wanted to add composure. Last year we were up there with the best in terms of counterattacking goals, but wanting to be a possession based team we just weren’t calm enough at times and Stephen can show that class and ability to add that to the team. www.harrogatetownafc.com I

MILES WELCH-HAYES Age: 25 Position: Defender No: 2
Town welcomed defender Miles Welch-Hayes to the club at the end of June. The 25-year-old has spent the last two and a half seasons at Colchester United, where he made over a half century of appearances, the majority coming during the 2021/22 campaign. Capable of playing on the right or in the centre of defence, Welch-Hayes is closing in on 100 appearances in League Two having featured for Macclesfield Town prior to his stint in Essex. His career started at Oxford United, making his League One debut in August 2016 before signing for Bath City, where his performances earned him a place in the 2017/18 National League South Team of the Year. It was his defensive showings in the EFL that caught the eye of Manager Simon Weaver though. “We’ve seen a lot of him at Colchester and watching him I thought he was a gritty defender and a superb athlete. His attitude to defending was really refreshing, he wants to defend and enjoys it, he’s hard to beat and that’s what we want to be as a team and he’s going to play an important part in that. We conceded too many goals last season to be successful and have to learn our lessons, and to do that, we need the likes of Miles to come in.”
In mid-June, Town announced the signings of Huddersfield Town duo Josh Austerfield and Jaheim Headley, who have both joined on loan from the Championship outfit.
JOSH AUSTERFIELD
Age: 20 Position: Centre Midfield No: 17 20-year-old Josh Austerfield spent the second half of last season loan at Town, impressing during his 11 appearances for the club. And the midfielder is returning with a point to prove, saying, “I want to come back and show that I am a better player than before. I loved every minute here last year whether I was playing or not and the Gaffer and Thirs believe that I can keep improving on what I showed at the end of the season. They wanted me back and that was a big positive for me.”
JAHEIM HEADLEY
Age: 20 Position: Left Back No: 15 Headley, also 20, joined Huddersfield Town in 2018 and has played in midfield, on the wing and as a left back. He said “I’m looking forward to it, I’m really excited to play in this league with this club and can’t wait to see what happens this season. Josh had so much good stuff to say about the club, he said it’s a good experience, that changing room atmosphere is great and the backroom staff and fans are excellent so it’s all positive!” 16

The 32-year-old joined Aston Villa’s academy at the age of 14 and made his pro debut for the Villans in 2008. In September 2013, Bannan joined Premier League Palace and went on to make 27 total appearances for the Eagles. Capped 27 times by Scotland, Bannan's consistent and hard-working displays since joining Wednesday have made him a firm fans' favourite at Hillsborough. Signing for Wednesday in Summer 2021 from Stoke City, the 33-year-old began his career with Mansfield, which included a loan spell at Harrogate Town in 2009, before moving to Halifax in 2011 where he scored 31 goals in 40 appearances. This form earned him a move to Millwall in 2014 where the striker’s goalscoring prowess continued, bagging 77 times in more than 200 games whilst at the Den before switching to Stoke in 2019.
Returning to Hillsborough from Bristol City in July 2021, the 31-year-old, right back made 46 total appearances for the Owls last season. He first joined Wednesday in the summer of 2015 on loan from Crystal Palace before making the move permanent in January 2016. He would go on to make over 100 appearances at Hillsborough before joining Bristol City in 2018 where he again made in excess of 100 appearances before linking back up with Wednesday.
Last season, Gregory top scored with 17 goals, scoring nine goals in 10 games at the end of the season, earning him the EFL Player of the Month for April.
Before joining the Owls in 2015, Hunt also spent time with Huddersfield, Grays, Chesterfield, Barnsley, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham.

The Owls announced the appointment of Darren Moore as manager in March 2021. As a defender, he made 654 senior appearances over two decades, representing Torquay, Doncaster, Bradford, Portsmouth, West Brom, Derby, Barnsley and Burton. He also gained three international caps for Jamaica. Moore moved into management in April 2018 with West Brom on a caretaker basis, almost saving the Baggies from Premier League relegation having taken the reins with them 10 points from safety and earning April's Manager of the Month along the way. Moore was appointed permanently in May 2018 with the aim of leading West Brom back to the top tier, but somewhat surprisingly left the following March with the Baggies well-placed in fourth. He moved to Doncaster in July 2019 and after laying firm foundations at the Keepmoat Stadium joined Wednesday.

Starting his career with Sheffield Wednesday and making his first-team breakthrough in 2003, the defender made almost 200 appearances for the Owls before moving to Coventry City in January 2010 after a loan spell. Ben Wiles
Rotherham United signed playmaking midfielder Daniel Barlaser from Newcastle United in October 2020, following a loan spell the previous year.
Exciting Academy graduate Ben Wiles has been a mainstay in the Millers midfield since his breakthrough campaign in 2018/19.
Since then, Barlaser has become somewhat of a fans’ favourite with his composure on the ball, extensive range of passing and prowess from a dead ball situation. Last season, the 25-year-old was pivotal in the Millers' promotion and Papa John's Trophy double, totalling 35 appearances and scoring nine goals as well as providing seven assists in all competitions – numbers that earned him a place in the 2021/22 League One Team of the Season. #ProudToBeTown
Now 23, Wiles has impressed the first-team management with his development, versatility and fitness levels since making the step-up from the club’s youth set-up. He has already amassed over 150 appearances at the New York Stadium including turning out a colossal 53 times for his hometown club last season, hitting the net a career-best 10 times, including a stunning goal at Wembley against Sutton United in the Papa Johns Trophy final, which the Millers won 4-2 after extra time.

Paul Warne was appointed manager on a permanent basis in April 2017 having previously taken interim charge of the first team in November 2016 following the departure of Kenny Jacket. He had some previous experience of being in the dugout for the Millers, after filling the role of joint CaretakerManager alongside Andy Liddell following the departure of Ronnie Moore in 2010. As a player which began at Wigan Athletic, he enjoyed two spells with Rotherham, accumulating just short of 300 appearances over nine years (1998-2005 / 2009-2012). Between his spells in South Yorkshire, Warne played for Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town. After hanging up his boots on his 500+ game playing career at the end of the 2011/12 season, Warne served the club as fitness coach under the management of Neil Redfearn, Neil Warnock, Alan Stubbs and Kenny Jackett.

Loan spells at Swindon and Coventry followed before he joined Huddersfield in March 2011, initially on loan. Part of the Terriers’ side that won promotion to the Championship via the Play-Offs in the 2011/12 campaign, he stayed at Town until January 2015 racking up 130 appearances before switching to Rotherham. Impressive form for The Millers led to a move to Cardiff City in summer 2017, and following promotion to the Premier League, the striker went on to make 14 appearances in the Premier League during the 2018/19 season. Last season, the 31-year-old scored 14 goals for the Terriers, hitting double figures for the first time in nearly four seasons and playing a pivotal part in Town's progression to the play-off final.

Signing in July 2013 from Watford and appointed club captain for last season's campaign Hogg's career started at Middlesbrough before he moved to Aston Villa. The central midfielder's debut for Villa came in August 2010 before he spent the second half of the 2010/11 season at Championship side Portsmouth. After 19 League starts with Pompey, Hogg moved to Championship Watford in the summer of 2011 racking up 84 appearances for the Hornets before his move up to Yorkshire.
Signing for Town in January 2021 from Boreham Wood, the 23-yearold attacker, who started his career in the West Ham Academy, enjoyed a stellar season in Town colours last term, establishing himself as a key member of the squad, leading the Club’s assist chart and earning his first Wales caps.
A key part of Town's two season stay in the Premier League between 2017-19, Hogg is now nearing 300 appearances for them. #ProudToBeTown
A season which started with him being named Championship Player of the Month for August 2021, he soon earned his first of three caps for Wales in October. The Play-Off Semi-Final second leg win over Luton was his 50th appearance of the season and his assist for Jordan Rhodes’ winning goal was his 16th in all competitions.

Carlos Corberán was appointed Huddersfield’s Head Coach in July 2020, joining the Terriers from Leeds United, where he was Assistant Coach to Marcelo Bielsa as the Whites achieved promotion to the Premier League. Corberán arrived at Town with a strong reputation in football. He began his career at Spanish giants Valencia, taking responsibility for the training methodology in their Academy before progressing to work with the First Team under Unai Emery and Manuel Pellegrini. Carlos then travelled overseas to become Assistant Head Coach at Saudi Arabian clubs Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, before Head Coach roles at Cypriot sides Doxa Katokopia and Ermis Aradippou. After working at the prestigious Aspire Academy in Qatar, he joined Leeds ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, initially as Under-23 Coach. He soon moved into the First Team setup under Marcelo Bielsa as the Whites finished third and first in the Championship.

Michał Helik

Tall, commanding and a real threat from set-plays, Helik at 25 added further experience to a young Reds squad ahead of the 2020/21 Championship campaign. He made an enormous impact in his debut season in South Yorkshire, both defensively and in front of goal as Barnsley made the play-off semi-final and his efforts saw him receive his first international call-ups and inclusion in Poland's EURO 2020 squad. Michał was voted Player of the Season by Reds supporters in 2020/21 and was more or less ever present last campaign and has racked up just short of 90 appearances in two seasons at Oakwell.

Callum Brittain
Arriving at Barnsley in the summer of 2018 from Bury, where he went back on loan to continue his development, the 22-year-old had to be patient for his opportunity on his return to Oakwell, but made an impact at the end of the 2019/20 Championship campaign, putting in a number of outstanding performances as the Reds secured survival on the final day.
Joining Barnsley in October 2020 from MK Dons, the 23-year-old full back was a regular for the Tykes last term during what was a difficult season for the South Yorkshire outfit that ultimately ended in relegation to League One.
Now with over 100 appearances under his belt including being everpresent last season, he also made the jump to international football - qualifying for Hungary - and coming on as sub in the Magyars 4-0 win over England in the UEFA Nations League last month. #ProudToBeTown
He made well over a hundred appearances for MK Dons, over a four-year period having made his debut as an 18-year-old back in 2016. An England U20 international, Callum is wellregarded for his attacking prowess from a deep position and had a stellar debut season with the Reds in 2020/21, marauding up the right wing as Barnsley made the Championship play-offs.

ACADEMY STAR SIGNS PROFESSIONAL WITH TOWN George Horbury has signed a first professional contract with the club having impressed while playing for our U18 Academy last season, becoming the first Harrogate Town player to do so.
T L The 18-year-old hit the ground running last season, scoring our Academy’s first ever competitive goal at St George’s Park against Burton Albion. Horbury’s form in front of goal carried on as the young midfielder continued to find the net from midfield during the season, catching the eye of Manager Simon Weaver. “He’s a strong central midfielder who excelled last year in the U18s. He was a real driving force for them and got better over the course of the season. It’s great having a Harrogate-born lad in there and we can’t wait to see how he develops now as a footballer. Paul Stansfield and Josh Law are already working their magic with players, and without our Academy, we wouldn’t have had that insight into George. I remember watching him against Lincoln early on and thought he stood out, and he’s got better and better. We’re going to involve him in the friendlies and take it from there, but we’ve got high hopes for him.” 38
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC PRE-SEASON PROGRAMME
Having just completed his A-levels, George is now ready to put his full focus into his football. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity I have been given and ready to work hard. It’s a step up in level, but I’ve tried to come in as fit as possible and learn from the pros in this team. Last season was the first season for the Academy so there were always going to be some ups and downs, but looking back I thought we did really well and I felt I improved over the year. “I’m high energy, get round the pitch and always give it my all. I like to break up the play, break through the lines from midfield and cause problems with my passing and dribbling. Everyone is really down to earth and welcoming here and I’m really grateful for Paul Stanfield and Simon Weaver giving me this opportunity.”
