FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT Name:
Max Gregory
Blog Address:

Rationale I am a predominantly typographic designer with an interest in the application of typography in editorial design and effective use of type for the creative sectors. I aim to produce design solutions that communicate clearly and effectively to the given audience without compromising intended message in favour of an interesting aesthetic. My research interests lie in design for publication and across a range of collateral that has logic or a system in its production that aids in communication. Professional print finishing is also an important part of the design I find interesting. My own creative interests lie mainly in design for print, focusing on design for music, culture and artistic sectors due to my creative interests alongside those of the industry. I始m interested in the development of identity for exhibition and independent galleries as well as other creative practices. I Want to look into design for the cultural sector possibly with a more real world application than briefs previously undertaken as they were often very niche. Developing identities for cultural venues should allow this, as these are projects that would appear within the public sphere. I have chosen briefs that should exploit publication, type design and development of identities for creative individuals, exhibitions and cultural venues. I have also looked into briefs that will allow me to develop my research and produce more informed solutions, hopefully providing me with portfolio pieces presenting my interest in design for the creative and cultural sectors. I have factored into these briefs the continuation of my dissertation topic, reflected in my continued interest in the subject of Swiss Graphic Design. This brief should allow me to explore both editorial design, applying modernist design principles in order to improve my visual communication, and the development of solutions to research heavy briefs.

Brief 1: Form and writing
Deadline
28th April
Rationale: A part collaborative brief focusing on the separate development of typefaces for creative industry professionals, more specifically graphic designers, that will be brought together under the name Form and writing. This brief will investigate the collaborative practice of a type foundry and the promotion of created typefaces both on screen and in print allowing me to develop my skills in type design and develop a strong range of printed and web deliverables.
Brief 2: Ben Harris Identity
Deadline
1st March
Rationale: A branding brief focusing on the development of an identity for a creative professional working within the discipline of photography. This brief will help me to gain experience working on a live brief, with a client, whilst allowing me to explore the possibilities and develop my skills in the creation of bespoke and professional identities. Ben works across many areas of photography, from portraiture to sports photography, so the identity needs to promote this broad photographic skill set to potential clients, most likely professionals within the creative industry in need of professional photography or sports clubs in need of press photography.
Brief 3: DFGA Yearbook
Deadline
TBC
Rationale: A collaborative investigation into the design of printed promotional material for educational institutions with a focus on layout design and the presentation of information. This brief is a little different from what I would normally choose with it being fully based on screen, however I think it could prove a good creative challenge and will allow me to develop my skills when working in a creative team, as well as with a client.
Brief 4: ISTD Sound Bites
Deadline
15th March
Rationale: A competition brief for ISTD, which I have chosen to take the shape of a print based investigation into publication design and the development of identities for exhibition collateral, the brief will be fairly research driven based on the nature of the subject. The original ISTD brief is very much open, so I want to use this to hone in on my skills and produce a project relevant to my own creative interests, using their provided subject matter of dialects from language recordings as a basis for an exhibition. I thought it would be very interesting to deal with the idea of dialect and sound in print, with the possibility of a sound based exhibition.
Brief 5: Carriage Works Re-brand
Deadline
20th May
Rationale: Carriage works is a theatre in Leeds that very much fits into the cultural sector market that I would like to work within. Using this to my advantage, as well as the current branding which could do with a refresh, I will use this brief as an opportunity to explore branding for the creative sectors with both print and web deliverables. My own preference towards print will mean that these elements will be explored to the full and the on screen deliverables will be an extension of these deliverables to allow for the translation between mediums.
Brief 6: Good News Paper
Deadline
20th May
Rationale: A collaborative brief focusing on the development of a publication containing solely good news, positive stories and achievements. It will be a print based investigation into branding and editorial design with a focus on production, distribution and awareness. The newspaper will be fully designed for national distribution and with it being a collaborative brief it will allow us a more comprehensive exploration of the subject. Like any newspaper it will need to be accessible to a large range of people and will need to tap into the area of the populated news media market that has not been already, good news.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: E-mailing professionals & Creatives. Deadline Details E-mail contact with various industry professionals, notably the curator of the 100 Years of Swiss Graphic Design Exhibition at the Museum For Design in Zurich. This research should inform my knowledge of Modernist design principles.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Research Visit, Carriage Works. Deadline Details Relevant specifically to the carriage works rebrand brief, visiting the venue should allow me to take first hand pictures and get a good grounding of what the venue is about and how my identity can be developed and applied with regards to the actual building.
