ABOUT THE EMPLOYERS ECOllaborate Now
United Nations Association in Canada: Canada Green Corps Programme
ECOllaborate Now is a small consulting firm based out of Port Alberni, British Columbia that specializes in social planning, natural resource management, and NGO development. It seeks to address sustainability through community engagement and inter-agency collaboration, with the goal of developing localized approaches to building healthy, resilient communities. ECOllaborate Now is dedicated to creating forums for dialogue that bring many points of view together, maximizing community well-being and sustainability. All projects follow the principle of initiating and supporting proactive planning to ensure long-term ecosystem health.
My position was partially funded by the United Nations Association in Canada’s Canada Green Corps Programme. This innovative youth employment programme is designed to bridge talented Canadian youth to meaningful employment to ignite Canada’s green economy. Participants benefit from peer-to-peer knowledge and skills transfer through “Innovation Teams” consisting of Green Corps participants across Canada. Work placements are designed so that participants are actively contributing to Canada’s commitments towards the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Sustainable Development Goals.

OVERVIEW In my role as Transportation Development Coordinator Intern, I worked primarily on active transportation projects and provided the following services: • Conducted best practice research on wayfinding, cycling networks, and pedestrian space design • Wrote grant proposals supporting active transportation initiatives • Supported the planning, promotion, and implementation of cycling-related events such as Bike to Work Week and the Bike Jamboree • Supported the Bike to School Education Pilot Project through content editing and graphic design • Planned and conducted community engagement sessions to discuss sustainability initiatives with high school students in Port Alberni • Provided technical website and graphic design support to Cycle Alberni, a local non-profit cycling group
Additionally, I supported ECOllaborate Now initiatives that did not involve active transportation planning, including working with the following groups: • Alberni Valley Gleaning Project • Alberni Air Quality Society

BIKE TO WORK & SCHOOL WEEK OBJECTIVE Encourage Port Alberni residents to try cycling by providing resources and support for new and continuing cyclists. The event helped build a sense of community connectedness while encouraging friendly competition amongst coworkers, classmates, and community members. The primary objective was to encourage physical activity as a lifestyle while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The 2017 event included daily “celebration stations” with free refreshments, cycling workshops for both adults and children, participation prizes, a photo contest, and a wrap-up event with a bike parade, live music, and a free BBQ for anyone on a bicycle.
RESPONSIBILITIES • Supported event planning, promotion, and implementation; promotions included the use of a website, e-mail, newsletters, social media, posters, and traditional media • Procured sponsors • Created a final report for granting agencies
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION PLAN REVIEW OBJECTIVE Review the Port Alberni Active Transportation Plan and prepare a presentation to City Council. The review served as an implementation update for the 2014 plan, assessing successes, gaps, and recommendations for future investment.
RESPONSIBILITIES • Reviewed the Active Transportation Plan to determine which strategies had been adequately implemented • Provided best practice recommendations • Prepared working documents to assist municipal staff in plan implementation • Created the presentation to council and an accompanying report for municipal staff

CYCLE ALBERNI
Dark Blue: CMYK 88,62,18,3
The bicycle tire in the logo has been divided into three distinct parts in order to represent the different groups that came together to form Cycle Alberni. Furthermore, it demonstrates that all types of cycling are possible in the Alberni Valley, whether that be cruising the highways on a road bike, hitting the trails on a mountain bike, or casually pedaling to the market on a comfy cruiser. While the tires may be different, the wheel rim is united—while differences exist, all cyclists share common needs, interests, and values. Cycle Alberni is a collective that advocates for greater bicycle education, safety, and infrastructure, and it strives to support and encourage cyclists of all ages and abilities.

CYCLE ALBERNI The newly-designed Cycle Alberni logo portrays the unique history, geography, and cycling culture of the Alberni Valley. It features Port Alberni’s iconic Harbour Quay clock tower, a landmark that instantly situates residents and visitors alike. The trees represent the Alberni Valley’s forestry industry, which carries both historical and modern day significance. These trees, along with the mountain peaks that rise up from the logo, also represent the beautiful natural scenery, trail networks, and outdoor culture of the Alberni Valley.
