INTRODUCTION

The New MBAM Center an important facility for building industry in Malaysia must be seen an incubator for both academics and builders. An incubator is a place which invites builders, academics and public to share and exchange knowledge. It is also a new iconic architecture that promotes sustainable design in building industry.

It is believed that creative thinking is always discovered in the space of interaction, not the space of work. The design concept of New MBAM Center is developed upon the integration between outdoor landscape and building function. Through the manipulation of stacking forms, gaps between spaces are created and converted into series of vertical gardens. These outdoor spaces which form a networked garden encourage people to more socially interact with each other.

Building which is vertically divided always faces the challenge of having effective communication and collaboration between different levels. How can different types of user circulate more three-dimensionally? How to create connection between spaces which are not directly linked by common corridor? The solution is to use carefully arranged outdoor staircases to connect the vertical gardens. These outdoor staircases which form a networked circulation thus allow people to travel more freely from one space to another.

Bio-diversity of curated vegetation, louvered screen facade, naturally ventilated circulation, IBS structure, photovoltaic cells, etc. are some of the key features of sustainable design to ensure a high standard of green building.

minimum massing

a compact cluster of required programmes typically fits within the minimum massing that is completely internalised and isolated from surrounding environment

air gaps. The open air gaps are strategically distributed throughout the building

the air gaps can function more than just an activity platform, they are spaces which allows nature to penetrate into the building. Series of vertical garden with diversity of vegetation are infilled into the air gaps. Diversity of vegetation is playing an important role in terms of creating a much more eco-friendly environment

garden infill CONCEPT

vertical network

another key feature of the proposal is the links between the vertical gardens. This vertical linkage allows people to move from one garden to another without taking the common corridor. It forms a network by itself. It is conceived as a network of social interaction rather than circulation

CONCEPT

sky garden

each air gap space is infilled with curated vegetation. This building with rich biodiversity incorporated as part of the sustainable design seeks a better balance between nature and built environment

vertical circulation

each vertical garden is linked by outdoor staircase. It creates a much more complex circulation system

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

ventilation

the air gaps that distributed throughout the building allows natural ventilation to cross all common corridors on each floor. Energy for mechanical ventilation is therefore significantly reduced

structure

hollow core slab is used at the main flooring structure. It is not only an Industrialised Building System (IBS) that can fasten the speed of construction, it also allows larger floor span that creates a more dynamic building form, and it is able to conceal services pipe inside the slab to save ceiling space CONCEPT DIAGRAM
