THE VESTIGE
Dragon Boat Club | Adaptive Reuse | Conceptual Design 2023
The Vestige is a dragon boat club situated on Blackwattle Bay, which has repurposed the existing buildings at 1-3 Bank Street through adaptive reuse. This project draws inspiration from site mapping, where the surrounding elements contribute to a sense of claustrophobia within the site. In response to this atmosphere, the project juxtaposes it by delving into the concept of ‘escapism.’ This exploration serves as a key driver in establishing primary viewpoints and enhancing the overall user experience. A primary goal of this project is to enhance public awareness of dragon boat racing, allowing users to appreciate various aspects of the sport, including boat building, through interactive experiences and a dedicated gallery. As users navigate through distinct circulation paths, they find themselves compelled to appreciate the remnants of the ‘past’ by traversing through the existing buildings before entering the new form. It is within this experience that the name Vestige takes on its meaningful form.

SITE MAPPING Viewpoints of the site were of particular focus, notably Blackwattle Bay and the Anzac Bridge. Addressing an obstruction to these views, the proposal suggests relocating the marina to the current Dragon Boat Club site. Towards the North-East of the site sits a towering cliff face with residential apartments on top. 7

CONCEPT COLLAGE & SOUVENIR MODEL The site’s atmosphere, enveloped by numerous elements, evokes a claustrophobic feeling and creates an almost suffocating sensation, all of which is captured in this collage. The concept model were items collected from the site, which were then pulverized and surround the boat to represent the sense of crushing of the site. Therefore, the project aims to juxtapose this feeling and create a journey of escaping and breaking free. 8

FORM DEVELOPMENT The demolition of the front two buildings instantly opens up the site, providing an opportunity to introduce new organic forms that juxtapose the existing structures. These forms tunnel out from the existing structures, cultivating a user experience that mirrors the journey of escape. 9

SPATIAL LAYOUT & CIRCULATION The user experience is delineated into public and private circulation paths, guiding individuals through the existing buildings before converging in a shared space within the new form. On the left, the spatial arrangement of programs poetically symbolizes journey of a boat, mirroring the process of starting from scraps, undergoing construction, and finally being launched for competitions.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN 1:100 @ A1 The Vestige meticulously distinguishes between the new and existing elements. By comprehending the rigid heavy-weight structure of the existing building, the new form ‘escapes’ out and ‘burst’ into an organic light-weight form.

Users are initially directed along designated circulation routes within the existing infrastructure of 1-3 Banks St., where they subsequently encounter a tunnel-like passage that serves as a transitional threshold before entering the new space. In this new space, both public and private user groups converge, sharing the area to partake in the café experience and explore a versatile gallery showcasing the achievements of the Dragon Boat Racing Club.

Residential Architecture | Regulatory and Practice Framework 2023
This project centers around the reconstruction of a terrace house, tailored to meet the unique requirements and needs of the client. The design approach is underpinned by two fundamental principles: first, the preservation of the property’s heritage geometry and materials, maintaining its original structure dating back to the early 1900s, which stands as a testament to creative and pragmatic design solutions that prioritize environmental and cultural sustainability, as well as inclusivity. The resulting practical and fitting design adheres to both the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and Inner West Development Control Plans (DCPs).

Algorithmic Architecture | Parametric Modelling | Computational Design 2022
The parametric exploration of the J.P. Morgan building within Sydney CBD can be construed as an explicit formulation of architectural forms and design opportunities. Through the adjustments of script parameters, the building presents a variety of possible forms that could be adapted to respond to environmental factors. A particular design element explored was the improvement of louver functionality. The model delivers several solutions that counteract undesired sun on an annual basis, adjusting the size and rotational factor of individual louvers based on the sun’s path. These conceptual design alternatives serve as foundational benchmarks for possible improvements the building can adopt to respond to everchanging environmental factors.

Technical Drawings | Construction Details | Model Making 2023
This project draws inspiration from @anti_reality, where AI-generated renders are logically interpreted to incorporate construction details and elements, resulting in a feasible and practical design. To ensure the structural integrity of this irregular shape, the project incorporates CLT and LVL elements as the primary structural components of the building. The design intervention of Pine Tree Panorama is heavily rooted in the concept of creating of a structural entity that seamlessly integrate into the Blue Mountain Forest Core. Drawing in inspiration from the natural forms of surrounding trees, this project aims to foster the journey of exploration through elevated platforms, winding pathways, and hidden nooks, inviting visitors to embark on a captivating journey of discovery.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS As nooks within the lookout vary in purpose, non-habitable spaces nearing the bottom are constructed using a cross-laminated timber construction to heighten the structural integrity of the form. Vertical loads are then transferred into the concrete pillars through the columns which are constructed out of concrete and metal rod elements.
