1.OVERVIEW What would Democracy look like if we modelled it into a way of collective living and governance in the new era? IDEA|TOPOS is bringing together researchers, policy-makers, private sector representatives and civil society activists in order to explore and develop new theory and best practices that will rise up to the challenges of Governance today.

The 4-day programme includes presentations of academic papers and social projects, open discussions using participatory methods, thematic workshops, information and networking opportunities as well as parallel cultural events and thematic tours of Athens. During IDEA|TOPOS 2015 expect to be faced with systemic societal challenges. Challenges which require way more than new information and technology. Challenges which call us to create new processes and communities of practice which will act in innovative ways at all levels: from the individual to the institutional, from the local to the national and the international. We invite seekers, doers and disrupters to join an unConference experience of mutual learning, networking, co-creation and action, moving forward to the basics.

2.ASSUMPTIONS Citizens hold the solutions.   

What if stimulate and facilitate participation, openness and collaboration at every level of decision making? What if we allow the diversity connecting diverse stakeholders and catalyze cross-sector collaboration? What if we experiment with novel social and digital technologies and build bridges between the digital and physical spheres?

Solutions will arise in fissures between silos of knowledge and expertise or other arbitrary boundaries.

4.VENUE

Our host is Technopolis, a 100.000 sq.m venue located at the old gas factory of Athens in Gazi area, next to the historical centre. It constitutes one of the most interesting industrial sights of Europe and it used to host a true independent community featuring a foundry, machineries, a garage, a restaurant, a barber shop, a community clinic, and other elements of a well-organized local economy. Technopolis was fully renovated by the City of Athens in 1999 and today it is used as an industrial park and cultural centre. It offers flexible and multi conference spaces that facilitate participation and collaboration and at the same time, direct connections to Athens’ cultural and historical sights.

Our meeting point is Athens, the place that hosted the birth to Democracy and developed a language in which some concepts remain interconnected for centuries: City . Citizen . Politics . Culture . State [Πόλη . Πολίτης . Πολιτική . Πολιτισμός . Πολιτεία] Lying on the verge between chaos and rebirth, Athens offers citizens of the world a unique stimulating context for meaningful conversations on the present and future of Democracy.

13.FOUNDING STORY

The 1st IDEA|TOPOS conference was held in Volos, Greece in 2012. The citizens’ initiative Imagine The City invited the University of Thessaly (Dpt of Planning and Regional Development) to open the scientific discussion and an open dialogue with Civil Society on issues related to strategic place management and place identity. The successful 3-day conference attracted 7 Universities and over 400 participants, while thousands of citizens engaged in the 10 parallel events in the city. It became clear that conference objectives for knowledge creation, dissemination and citizens’ participation demanded new tools and processes. The experience of the 1st IDEATOPOS conference in 2012 and the friction with the needs and challenges of society in Greece and beyond, led us to examine fundamental issues. Focusing on the decision- and policy-making processes that shape our cities and define our lives, active stakeholders from the social and scientific spheres are initiating the design of the 2nd IDEA|TOPOS conference in 2015, provoking networking and collaboration between those who stand at the edge of technology and those who explore innovation in Politics, seeking a ‘next generation’ Democracy. The conference is being developed in parallel with other social projects in Greece, in the context of “POLITEIA 2.0: Democracy reborn”, a platform for political innovation which in 2012 won the Audience Award at the European Investment Bank Social Innovation Tournament. Amongst others, the platform fosters action research for the design of a new democratic constitution for Greece through prototype citizens’ engagement processes. See www.ideatopos.org/2012
