INTRODUCTION
JOHN LIVINGSTONE
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Welcome to Thornton.
JGL PROPERTIES
Thornton’s location, on a unique peninsula promontory
at Kangaroo Point, has captivated us for many years. As one of the last remaining absolute riverfront properties, with unimpeded panoramic views from the Botanic Gardens all the way through to the iconic Story Bridge, it demanded an extraordinary architectural response. Our vision was to create bespoke residences that deliver a front row seat to the very best of Brisbane.
Brisbane is a world-class city with river connectivity,
culture, art and restaurants, luxury retail, Queens Wharf Integrated Resort, Waterfront Brisbane and Howard Smith Wharves. Thornton positions you right at the heart of it all, whilst also shielding you from the hustle and bustle of city life due to its absolute riverfront position surrounded by parklands. Kangaroo Point peninsula is one of the most sought-after places in Brisbane to reside.
At JGL Properties we’ve had the privilege of working
with Australia’s most talented architects and designers, and Thornton is no exception. Liam Proberts is one of Australia’s most innovative architects and he has a remarkable ability to champion artistic collaboration, progressive technology and materials that create truly enduring architecture. He has created an extraordinary design, perfect for this rare site, and I hope you will agree that the result is remarkable.
It is always a pleasure to develop a building where
compromise never enters the equation.
We now invite you to make Thornton your new home.

BEYOND RARE. BEYOND COMPARE.
CREATIVE COLLABORATORS
Great design is almost invisible. There are many universal principles to consider. From understanding the relationship between form and function, respecting the integrity of materials to paying attention to the way the space feels. Homes are created to be the springboard for life. This is why we spend more time than most selecting the key creators, architects, artisans and craftspeople capable of curating and delivering the vision we have. Thornton is a unique creative collaboration between four true masters of their craft: Architect Liam Proberts, internationally renowned for his subtropical residential designs; Chef & Restaurateur Thierry Galichet, whose years of culinary magic have informed the design of Thornton’s kitchen and entertaining spaces; Gallerist & Curator Phillip Bacon AM, whose insight into displaying art to its true potential has shaped each residence’s gallery space and Ralph Wilson whose infinitely collectible work will grace Thornton’s foyer. We have set very high expectations for Thornton, because it’s important that we consistently exceed yours. Our aim is to create Brisbane’s pre-eminent residences.

ARCHITECT AND CRE ATIVE DIRECTOR BURE AU^PROB ERTS
LIAM PROBERTS
Liam Proberts is no stranger to delivering contemporary subtropical designs that seamlessly connect with their surroundings. A proud Queenslander, Liam relishes the opportunity to design for the elements, showcasing how buildings can not only complement their climate but honour the heritage of their locality. This enduring philosophy won bureau^proberts the prestigious AIA John Dalton Award for Building of the Year 2019 for Thornton’s neighbour at Kangaroo Point, Walan.

ARCHITECT AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR BUREAU^PROBERTS
‘We have learnt to never underestimate the value of collaboration. The team is empowered to bring their innovative architectural response to the project and make it truly exceptional.’
Position and aspect are the starting points of any great design and without doubt, Thornton occupies one of Brisbane’s most unique and exclusive sites, with an ultra-rare north facing aspect.
Situated at the last waters-edge property in the upper part of
the Kangaroo Point peninsula, Thornton overlooks the city and sits on its own promontory between parklands and the ferry.
Its absolute riverfront location, nestled against and connected
to the green space reserve of the Kangaroo Point parklands, ensures that it can never be built out. It is perfectly positioned to capture northern breezes channelled by Kangaroo Point’s unique landscape, along the curve of the river. Thornton’s north-facing river aspect delivers spectacular 200 degree views from Brisbane’s South Bank and Botanic Gardens across the full length of the River City skyline through to the iconic Story Bridge.
Such an incredible position demanded a design in harmony
with its surroundings, with a fluid grace, superb symmetry and proportion.

THE BEAUT Y OF GL ASS
LIAM PROBERTS
ARCHITECT AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR BUREAU^PROBERTS
‘In the design of Thornton, we have worked with glass to wrap living spaces in a translucent skin. The form floats above the landscape providing fluidity in shape, opacity to hint at function, and clarity to frame and highlight the breathtaking views.’
It is not difficult to grasp why bureau^proberts chose to cloak Thornton in a bespoke master-crafted glass frit exterior – it was to make Thornton the most breathtakingly beautiful, private and exclusive residential offering on the Brisbane river.
The shimmering beauty of frit gives Thornton’s flowing
glass exterior all the fascination of a coveted jewel, but on a much grander scale. On the building’s elevations, the double-glazed frit exterior fans out to capture breezes and facilitate natural airflow throughout each residence. The frit’s smooth, gradient aesthetic and unique energy-saving abilities are perfectly harnessed to their full potential, blurring away the joints between glass panels, creating higher transparency panoramic views from within the building and giving Thornton its distinctive iconic exterior. Each residence features a double skin, with full height doors that enable residents to seamlessly transition from the living spaces onto the north-facing balconies.

ARCHITECT AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR BUREAU^PROBERTS
‘An intense respect for Thornton’s position has been a consistent defining factor in the design, as has the breathtaking precision of the craftsmanship and the quality and authenticity of the natural materials within.’
LIFE IS ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS
Craftsmanship, detail and presence are too often undervalued in architecture, coming secondary to technology, trends and economy. In Thornton we have created a space that takes us back to first principles: that life is all about the smallest details and that a dedication to prioritising exceptional materials, proportion and light will result in spaces and views that are beyond compare.

THE ENDURING QUALITY OF NATURAL STONE
30
Large pieces of stone, cut from the mountains and hauled to distant places, have always served as a sign of wealth and power. Trace the path of the world’s most coveted stone, and you follow the major movements of wealth in human history. From ancient Greece to Victorian London to 20th-century New York and now to Thornton.
What we admire today as mesmerising linear stone was born
hundreds of millions of years ago. Countless generations of tiny sea creatures lived, died and slowly drifted to settle at the bottom of a primordial ocean. Over aeons, their bodies were slowly compressed by gravity, layer upon layer, tighter and tighter, until eventually they petrified into the interlocking white crystals that make up natural stone.
Thousands of years later, in the breakup of the supercontinent
Pangea, tectonic jostling raised the ancient sea floor and the crystallized creatures became breathtaking, towering mountains. In some places they rise more than 6,000 feet into the air.
The word marble comes from the ancient Greek verb
‘marmairo’ which means ‘to glow’. Like gold, this natural stone is its own form of steadfast wealth, visually striking and highly sought after. In Greece, the source of Thornton’s natural stone, the iconic architecture of the ancient world has continued to attract the world’s admiration for centuries.
This is the very stone the famous Venus de Milo was carved
from, that now floats gracefully above the Brisbane River within the residences of Thornton.

CHEF AND RESTAUR ATEUR
THIERRY GALICHET
Thierry Galichet has played an integral role in the Brisbane dining scene for over thirty-five years. Most famous for pioneering the legendary Montrachet, his new restaurant La Cache a Vin, has realised stunning success. Born in France’s Burgundy region, the famed chef and restaurateur approaches each of his endeavours with gusto, creativity, and emotional intelligence. His vision for designing each kitchen within Thornton was no exception. Galichet’s culinary techniques and purposeful expression of the dining occasion starts with an homage to the preparation of produce and cooking mastery. Thornton residents will revel in the very existence of what he proclaims as the engine room of every residence with each touch point conceived and created with consideration for the sense of occasion and cause for celebration.

‘Everything happens in the kitchen. The day begins and ends here. It’s the engine room, where ingredients are transformed, wine breathes and magically vanishes, stories are told and culinary secrets are shared. It’s a room that’s full of life, the real living room.’
Thierry Galichet’s vision for each kitchen within Thornton would bring a smile to the face of any Michelin starred chef. An entertainer’s dream, extravagance meets simplicity with purpose-built engineering seamlessly underlying all forms of cooking.
A custom galley bench in Noceto Striato stone provides the
canvas for the most demanding of chefs and forms the backbone for informal kitchen gatherings. The butler’s pantry, seasoning drawer, automated dropdown bar, Champagne fridge drawer, wine fridge, PITT gas burner, Gaggenau 400 Series oven, steam oven and warming drawer are all intuitively placed to fulfil their roles in entertaining with ease and excellence.

IN THE DETAIL
Thornton’s interior inspiration begins in nature. From the blonde timber to the natural stone hewn from the quarries of Greece, bureau^proberts have sourced materials with beauty and presence. It takes great skill to transform hardwood or a slab of stone into a work of art. The design team at bureau^proberts, in discussion with Thornton’s collaborators, engaged expert artisans to fulfil the vision for each residence. This dedication to the smallest detail extends throughout each residence, with matching stone commissioned from a single quarry for every natural stone element, from the magnificent kitchen benchtops and galley fitouts, to the expansive ensuites and powder room. Even below eye level, this dedication to perfection is evident in the perfectly matched natural stone skirtings.
Residences intuitively adapt to the time of day and inclination
of the sun with fully automated aluminium blinds. Wherever you explore, your eye is rewarded with perfection, from the carefully commissioned series of artworks in the foyer to the hidden lift arrival lights glowing softly behind sheets of Noceto Striato stone.
