It’s been just under a year since ‘Greenery’ was announced as the Pantone Colour of the Year and there’s no sign of this trend slowing down. Often referred to as ‘nature's neutral’, green is a luminous pigment seen within every interior colour palette today. Drawing the outside in, interior designers are habitually turning to plants to revive, restore and renew living spaces. To honour this trend, Places Magazine recently sat down with owner of The Botanical Society, Michael Notman. Affectionally coined ‘the plant whisperer’, Michael specialises in plantscapes and plant styling, staging, rental and maintenance services.

How did The Botanical Society start?
and history for the area and I’ve spent over the last 20 years being a part of its growth. I love the creativity and uniqueness of the businesses that call this place home.
My father was a green-thumb; my first memories are of my father stealing clippings from rare specimens in Keri-Keri NZ where I am from. I always had a keen interest in mid century modern architecture and the plants that filled these spaces. Majority of these plants were in demand but hard to find so I started collecting and propagating these plants.
What impact do plants have on home styling/ staging?
I then started pop-up shops and it rolled from there. I began with plant rentals for my clients; Loud Events, Paul Owen Architect and Kalka Homes, which lead to consultancy work for bars, cafés, retailers, commercial spaces and restaurants. Shortly after, I was approached by my previous landlord to open a green nook within the grounds of his store; The Modern Furniture Store in Fortitude Valley, which is now my favourite place to be.
You’ve worked with some fantastic businesses including one of our local favourites Sixes and Sevens, tell us about this experience.
Plants enhance a property by bringing it to life and evoking emotion. They make people feel good by providing a sense of calm and serenity. Not only this, but people associate well cared for plants with a well cared for home.
I love the Sixes and Seven’s space. It was a collaborative process. The client provided a brief; outlining the structural environment What services do you offer? and the potential plantscape opportunities. We are a bit of a mix-up. We retail, consult, supply The design development process has been and install private residences. I also design and dynamic over 18 months. However, low maintenance was the end goal. Overall, managing all these components to develop a unique and creative environment for Sixes and Sevens, that their customers can enjoy was a great experience. Summer is here. What greenery trends should we watch out for this season? The trend of the trailing vine continues. For those who have little experience with indoor plants, I highly recommend starting with one that will survive and inspire. Epipremnum aureum survives in all levels of light, it is simple to maintain and suitable for bedroom, bathroom, or any shelf to cascade from. For those with a little more experience we highly recommend the hard to find Monstera obliqua, due in-store December. In Queensland, we recommend sun hardy, drought tolerant plants such as; succulent, cacti and novelty grasses.
