Shaun Lockyer

South African-born Shaun Lockyer is a sought-after Brisbane based architect whose success is, in part, due to his ability to consistently deliver homes that make a big impression in the Brisbane landscape for all the right reasons. I chat to Shaun about his design ethos, managing client expectations, and how he has come to be a force in South-east Queensland home design.


What was the appeal of a career in architecture for you? I enjoy the balance between the technical, the creative and the interpersonal skills (and challenges) that architecture demands of you. I love that every project represents a new opportunity to interrogate a pre-existing condition in order to create a better and more sustainable outcome for the client. The potential to make a real difference is always there and this responsibility keeps you focused and ensures that you are never complacent. It’s a very fulfilling career for those who are completely engaged in it.

How do you describe your design ethos and aesthetic? My go-to place is the 30s-60s modernist period. I have previously referred to my work as “regionally inspired sub-tropical modernism”. In essence I am a modernist (form follows function) so I start all of my thoughts from the perspective of how one would want to feel in a space and then find ways of articulating that in architectural terms. I like the rational, the honest and natural so do my best to use materials and or devices that best reflect these values (timber, stone etcetera are the more obvious characteristics of this approach).

You are an in-demand architect, what do you think is your appeal? I would like to think relevance is a big part of it. We try to avoid mimicry, fashion and trend while equally trying to push the boundaries and innovate. This tension forces me to revert back to older sources to find ideas that will resonate with people through multiple generations and trends. We are also very client and process focused with a very heavy focus on the delivery of a home. This means that clients get ALL of the facts and truths up front about what is involved in building a home so that there are no surprises as the process moves along. We will also never take shortcuts, so we do it all properly and completely or we do nothing at all.

Can you share some recent developments in design that you find appealing and are applying in your designs? As a whole, I feel like people are engaging more with solid construction as they see this as having more resonance in the end result. We are seeing a lot of interest in the use of expressed concrete, stone and textured finishes on block walls. The use of honest, natural materials continues to get traction, which is great as this really does add a long-term feel of quality and timelessness to the home. Increasingly we are also seeing more people interested in smaller flexible spaces than large for large’s sake. The 60s modernist revival is something that is always in the background but gaining momentum and we love anything that demonstrates this.

Do you think there is anything about Brisbane culture in relation to home design that makes Brisbane unique compared to other capital cities? I think the contemporary architectural discourse is much more directly connected to “place” than perhaps in other states. Our benign climate affords us latitude in the way we conceive spaces that is not sustainable in the southern states. Our connection to the landscape and outdoor living is a critical within the overall decision-making process that drives us to work the edges of our houses in a more overt way. This response to our environmental landscape is an intelligent and engaging one that is proving to deliver more interesting, engaging and sustainable homes that are attracting worldwide attention (as they have already done for a long time).
