RETAILERS GIVE BACK

WORKS

We all want to make an impact on the world, and the Watters Creek management team and merchants are committed to doing just that — a lofty goal that is exemplified in the Make A Difference campaign. “We see our employees as ‘agents of change,’ continually learning and discovering where needs exist, receiving inspiration from others who do good works, and find ways to turn plans into action,” explains Terri Montesi, Chairman and CEO of Trademark Property Co. who owns Watters Creek in a joint venture. Trademark launched the Make A

Crusading for a Cause Watters Creek is proud to Make A Difference through Carson’s Crusaders Foundation.

Trademark Corporate — Habitat for Humanity Project

Carson’s Crusaders Foundation is fulfilling its mission of providing transportation and sibling support to children and their families affected by solid tumor pediatric cancers. It’s also a living testament to the generous spirit of Carson Richardson. “He fought, we fought, a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer,” says president Kimberly Richardson, who co-founded the organization with her husband Ryan and Carson’s grandfather, George Richardson. “We lost him in February 2010 when he was 7. We saw a lot of people who weren’t as fortunate as us and we wanted to be able to help. Carson took the lead on that. His little heart was just a giving, giving heart. You couldn’t be sad around Carson —it was impossible. My hope and dream is that someday my children will be running this foundation,” she adds, referring to Carson’s older brother Collin and younger sister Caroline.

CARSON RICHARDSON Richardson credits Watters Creek with the organization’s successful fundraising efforts. The center has featured the cause and its events on parking meters, provided space for posters, and merchants have donated items for events, including the second annual “Brighten the Night” Wine Tasting and Live Auction. “The merchants are very kind and generous,” notes Richardson. “They’ve been so great. Allen is an amazing community.”

and water conservation methods. Watters Creek is pleased to showcase the Carson’s Crusaders Foundation and Altar’d State as two shining examples of how one person can change the world. If you know someone who is making a difference or is part of an organization that might make a good partnership with Watters Creek, we want to hear from you! RETAILERS GIVE BACK We recently caught up with Aaron Walters, CEO of Altar’d State and a veteran of the retail industry. He shared some thoughts on the company’s philosophy.

Q

What inspired the

name Altar’d State?

shopping

WITH PURPOSE

Altar’d State was founded to fill the gap in the retail industry and change the world for the better. The name Altar’d State describes the outward transformation in self-esteem and self-image we would like to give to our customer, as well as describing the faith-based center of the company. The name shows that we are different, and we want to inspire a movement for others to stand out, for good.

Q

You have more than 20 stores.

How does Watters Creek factor in? The new Watters Creek store is our fourth store in Texas. Being raised in Texas, I know what a cornerstone it will be for our business, and our stores in Texas have been great additions to our retail family. As a company, we are constantly growing and changing, adding our 26th store this month. We want to continuously adapt to provide fashionable clothes to young women who want to make a difference.

Q

You do so much more than talk the talk with funding employees’ volunteer time, inspirational blogs, the giving-back efforts through vendor partners. What efforts will be specific to the Watters Creek store? At the Watters Creek store we woul really like to engage the community as well as our employees. We will be funding local community service hours for our Watters Creek employees as well as donating a portion of sales to the local community efforts every Monday through our Mission Monday Program, which is really a chance for us to show who we are: a company centered around giving back.
