2014 McNeese Tennis Season Outlook with Coach Steinberg

#COMETOGETHER

Talk about bringing a team who had not made it to a conference tournament since 2005 in your first season as head coach.

Who do you expect to break out of their shell and make in impact this season?

Last year was important on so many levels. Our goal was to change the culture of the program and the team mentality, and we definitely accomplished those goals. The wins, positive record and qualifying for the tournament were just added bonuses. The team deserved to qualify, and they deserved to be rewarded for all their hard work.

Thatโ€™s a tough question because I have several names in mind. I would like this to be Anastasiaโ€™s best season thus far. She had a breakout year last year, really maturing and stepping up her game, so this year I expect more from her. There is no reason she canโ€™t continue improving, and along with her experience and maturity really be a leader on the team.

Obviously, Klaudia was the backbone of the team last season going undefeated in singles play. What can she do to improve upon last seasonโ€™s success?

Sara is going to have a tremendous impact on the team right away. She is a great player that already had some impressive results this fall. I think she is few adjustments away from being one of the top players in our region and conference. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I anticipate Sara having a great season.

Klauida had a tremendous season last year, going undefeated in season and winning Southland Conference Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and All-Louisiana Player of the Year. However, she couldnโ€™t have achieved all those without her teammates being there and supporting her. We set high individual goals for Klaudia this year, and she is eager to reach them. I think last yearโ€™s success made her โ€œhungrierโ€ for this year, which is great. Having said that, we can still improve a lot of areas in her game, starting with physically becoming a lot stronger, this is our priority for her at the moment.

However, overall I think Vivien the freshman will have her breakout year. Vivien came here flying a little under the radar as far as recruiting, but we have great belief in her and her abilities. She is a great kid, hard worker and very coachable. She is such a fast learner that I believe with a little more match experience under her belt she will have the confidence to really breakthrough and flourish. What are the teamโ€™s strengths and some things you would like to improve on this year?

Talk about the newcomers to the team this year. This is a great freshmen class, and we are super excited to see how they compete in the team environment this spring. Julia and Sara were both accomplished junior players in Europe, and both are very experienced in competing at the highest levels. Vivien is a little less experienced, but she brings a lot of raw talent and has a lot of room to grow as a player. All three are extremely hard workers and they want to reach their maximum potential, which makes them a pleasure to work with. All three are expected to make an immediate positive impact on the team.

We definitely need to improve our doubles. That was our weakness last year and something we have to get better at. Three freshmen on the roster requires a lot of teaching and basic doubles work, but I am confident we can improve in this area and get a strong doubles line up. The doubles point is going to be crucial for us this year. Since we are basically a brand new team, I think we will discover our strengths as season begins and we start competing as a team. We are still in the process of finding our team identity at the moment. I think our strengths changed from last year. Our line up is going to look completely different, and this year we are a little more talented. However, any team I will coach will first off rely on hard work and fight, and only then rely on talent. If we want to reach our goals we need to be the toughest team in the conference, the team that never say die, and I believe we will be that team.
