2008 OUTLOOK McNeese State will field a young and inexperienced team this season after losing nine letterwinners, seven of which were starters who helped the Cowgirls post its second consecutive 30 win season and Southland Conference Tournament appearance. The Cowgirls lost three starting pitchers, outfielders and its second baseman. A total of eight letterwinners and six starters return from a 2007 team that posted a 30-32 overall record and finished fifth in the SLC with a 16-11 record. The Cowgirls advanced to the SLC postseason tournament where they lost 3-0 to Sam Houston State in the first round before being eliminated by Nicholls State in a 5-4 loss. Southland Conference “Utility Player of the Year” Jenny Clay is the Cowgirls’ top returning player. Clay played several positions last season and throughout her career and is coming off a season where she was second on the team with a .313 batting average, 37 runs scored, 55 hits, 33 RBI’s and tied for a team high 13 doubles. Also returning are seniors Megan Beard and Carmen Sittig, juniors Rachel King, Michelle LaVoie and sophomores Liz Morvant, Tiffany Ritchie and Chelsea Jones. Beard returns to right field after earning a starting position midway through the 2007 season. She ended the season with a .299 batting average, 29 hits, 15 RBI’s and five home runs and earned third team all-SLC honors. Sittig has been used as a reserve throughout her career and will probably be utilized that way again this season. She picked up her first career victory last season with a win over Birmingham Southern. King saw playing time as the Cowgirls’ catcher and designated player last year and will most likely do the same this season. King batted .283 with 30 hits and 12 RBI’s on her way to being named to the all-SLC second team as a designated player. LaVoie saw playing time at three positions last year (first base, pitcher, designated player). Most of her playing time was spent at first base and pitcher. She is expected to be the Cowgirls’ starting first baseman but will also see time in the circle this year. Ritchie returns as the starting third baseman where she played in 56 games and had a .938 fielding percent in her rookie season. Morvant, the Cowgirls’ starting shortstop last year will be moved to centerfield and could possibly see time at shortstop again this season. Morvant led the Cowgirls and the SLC with 25 stolen bases. After losing its entire starting pitchers, the Cowgirls will turn to Temple Junior College transfer Bethany Stefinsky and freshman Katie Shumaker who will join LaVoie and Sittig. Redshirt freshman Candace Duhon will give the Cowgirls added depth at this position as well. Shumaker earned all-district and all-state honors while at Westbrook High and was a member of the district championship team. Duhon prepped at St. Louis High where she recorded 209 strikeouts and posted a 0.00 ERA in district play as a senior. She posted a 55-38-1 career record with 608 carer strikeouts and was a member of four district championship teams and the 2006 state semifinalist team. Duhon was a four time all-district and all-Southwest Louisiana selection. She was her district’s MVP twice and all-state pick twice. Molly Guidry (Cecilia High), Whitney Corbello (Sam Houston High) and Lindsey Langner (Pearland High) will also be making their collegiate debut’s. Guidry rejoins former high school teammate Jenny Clay after earning all-district and all-state honors while at Cecilia High. She is expected to be the starting shortstop. Corbello is expected to play first base when LaVoie pitches but could also see playing time at third base and catcher. Langner is expected to be the Cowgirls’ starter in left field after a successful high school career. She was a member of the bi-district and Region 3 finalist teams as well as a member of the 11U USSSA National Championship team. Junior College transfer Holly Long who has college experience, is expected to start at second base. She pent the past two years at Temple JC where she was a two time all-conference and a member of a team that placed fifth at the nationals her freshman season. The 2008 schedule has the Cowgirls on the road for its first four playing dates including its season opener at Houston on Feb. 9. The Cowgirls will also travel to Praivie View A&M before visiting Alabama, a 2006 College World Series participant and the Auburn Invitational. McNeese will also take part in the Oklahoma Worth Tournament March 8-9. Other non-conference road games has the Cowgirls traveling to Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern and LSU along with Southland Conference games. McNeese will host Louisiana-Lafayette Feb. 20 before hosting its own Cowgirl Classic Feb. 22-24. Other non-conference opponents include Grambling and Louisiana Tech. The Southland Conference opener is scheduled for Feb. 26 in a three-game series against Northwestern States. The Southland Conference Tournament is scheduled for May 8-10 in San Marcos, TX. The league’s top six teams will make up the tournament field and a chance to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament.

CHRIS MALVEAUX
HEAD COACH Fourth Season
NCAA Regionals (2005) SLC Tournament Champs (2005) TWO- 30 win seasons (2005, 2007) Three- 20 win season (2005, 2006, 2007)
Chris Malveaux enters his fourth season as the Cowgirls’ head coach with a 85-97 career record. He has guided the Cowgirls to three twenty win season and two thirty win seasons (2005, 2007) and the Southland Conference Tournament in his first three seasons as head coach, winning the Southland Conference Tournament in 2005 and earning a NCAA bid that same season. Last season, McNeese posted its second 30 win season under Malveaux with a 30-32 record and advanced to the SLC Tournament for the third consecutive season under his direction. In his first season as head coach (2005), he was one of a few coaches to lead their team to the NCAA Tournament in their first season as head coach. The 2005 season turned out to be a year every coach dreams about. The season began with a 9-24 start and the Cowgirls turned things around to produce a 24-9 record in their last 33 games. The last three weeks of the season were unbelievable for Malveaux. McNeese was in a must win situation heading into a SLC series against Nicholls State to even have a chance of making the SLC Tournament. The Cowgirls won two out of three games. McNeese’s next task was to sweep Cowgirl Softball
Southeastern La. to earn the sixth and final spot of the SLC Tournament. They did that in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 come from behind victory in game two and then won the final game of the series 1-0 to clinch the tournament’s final spot. Noone could have ever predicted what happened at the Southland Conference Tournament that year. McNeese dropped the first game 5-0 to regular season champion and top seed Texas-San Antonio. McNeese then went on to win its next five games including victories over TexasArlington and Texas State to make it to the final day of the tournament. The storybook season continued as the Cowgirls won three games on the final day of the tournament. McNeese eliminated Texas-San Antonio and then capped the weekend off by defeating Sam Houston State twice to win the SLC Tournament and the right to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament, Prior to being elevated to head coach, Malveaux was a Cowgirl assistant for three years. As an assistant, Malveaux was involved in all aspects of the program from on field coaching, recruiting and field maintenance. Prior to coming to McNeese, Malveaux was a manager for the Texas A&M softball team and was a summer league coach.

McNeese State University
In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the official name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certified for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's first ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fiscal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

LAKE CHARLES
The first people to settle the lake were Mr. and Mrs. LeBleu of Bordeaux, France. They arrived in 1781 and secured their home six miles east of the present site of Lake Charles, living in peaceful coexistence with several tribes of Indians. This area originally settled by the LeBleu's is now known as LeBleu Settlement. Other pioneers quickly ventured to Lake Charles. Among them was Charles Sallier who married LeBleu's daughter, Catherine. The Sallier's built their home on the lake, in the area now known as Lake Charles. After Charles Sallier built his home in this area, the lake became known as Charlie's Lake. By 1860 this area was being called "Charleston" or "Charles Town." Settlers at the turn of the century acquired property from the Indians or they homesteaded the Rio Hondo lands. The Rio Hondo which flowed through Lake Charles was later called Quelqueshue, an Indian term meaning "Crying Eagle" and still later Calcasieu. Little is known of these early residents except that they were a mixture of English, French, Spanish and Dutch. On March 7, 1861, Lake Charles was incorporated as the town of Charleston, Louisiana. The growth of the city was fairly slow until Captain Daniel Goos came in 1855. He established a lumber mill and schooner dock, now Goosport, and promoted a profitable trade with Texas and Mexican ports by sending his schooner down-river into the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the wood which built the city came from Goos' mill. Until the arrival of Goos, Jacob Ryan dominated the lumber industry. Ryan convinced the state government to move the parish seat to Lake Charles. Later that year, Ryan and Samuel Kirby transferred the parish courthouse and jail to Lake Charles, at that time called Charleston. Six years after the city was incorporated, dissatisfaction over the name Charleston arose. On March 16, 1867, Charleston, Louisiana, was incorporated into the town of Lake Charles.

New Orleans: 205.2 miles With more than 75 fairs, festivals and special events each year, our area has celebrations down to an art form - complete with food, music, lights and laughter. Contraband Days is one of Louisiana’s largest festivals and the City of Lake Charles' oldest festival. Contraband Days is a 12-day festival/carnival extravaganza filled with savory cajun food, family fun and festivities, and is attended by over 200,000 people annually. Each year during the first two weeks in May the city officially celebrates the legend of the pirate Jean Lafitte with its Contraband Days celebration. History tells us that Lafitte and his band of pirates once sailed the area's waterways and are said to have buried Lafitte's Contraband treasure somewhere in the vicinity of the lake. The festivities kick off every year with a pirate ship bombardment to "take control of the city" at the seawall of the Lake Charles Civic Center. A gang of rowdy and unruly buccaneers led by Jean Lafitte himself overruns the blazing cannons of the local militia, raises their "Jolly Roger" flag, captures the Mayor and forces him - with swords drawn - to walk the plank into the swirling waters of the lake.
