McNEESE STATE After posting a 12-18 overall record and a sixth place Southland Conference finish, McNeese State will look to contend for a the conference title and its sixth consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearance under sixth year head coach Dale Starr. The Cowgirls return seven letterwinners including four starters from last season. The Cowgirls will be without the services of libero Amanda Allen for the 2009 season. Allen suffered a season ending injury during Spring drills. The starters returning include all-SLC performer in outside hitter Chanel Tyler, setter Sarah Cartie and middle blocker Nicole Bowden. Other letterwinners returning are senior outside hitter Deanna Sanchez, libero Katrina Mica, middle blockers Erin Huckabay and Ayshin Vasser. Freshman Brittany Williams will see her first collegiate action after spending the 2008 season as a redshirt. Head coach Dale Starr is excited about the 2009 signing class that consist of ULLafayette transfer and Moss Bluff (La.) native Katie Kennedy. Kennedy will used on the right side or as a defensive specialist. Other signees include outside hitters Taylor Bustamento (Spring, Tx.) and Priscilla Massengale (Baytown, Tx.), setter Becky Bekelja (League City, Tx.), libero/defensive specialist Whitney Ellisor (Deer Park, Tx.) and middle blocker Chelsie Taylor (Delcambre, La.).
Outside Hitter Returning Players: Deanna Sanchez (SR), Chanel Tyler (SR), Amanda Allen (RS), Brittany Williams (SO) Newcomers: Priscilla Massengale, Taylor Bustamento With four returning players, three of whom saw playing time in 2008, the outside hitter position will be critical for the success of McNeese Volleyball in 2009. Chanel Tyler returns after seeing playing time in 109 games as a junior, leading the team in points (391), points per game (3.59), kills (340), kills per game (3.12), service aces (33), aces per game (.30), and was second on the team in digs (342) and digs per game (3.14). After being named to the All-Southland Conference second team as a junior, Chanel has been named to the pre-season All-SLC first team for 2009. Deanna Sanchez returns for her senior year after seeing action in 109 games, finishing with 23 kills, 22 service aces, and 233 digs. Brittany Williams will return after redshirting the 2008 season, and after a solid spring season, will look to earn playing time. Amanda Allen will redshirt this year after suffering a back injury during the summer. Joining this group will be Priscilla Massengale, a freshman from Baytown, Texas and Taylor Bustamento, a freshman from Spring, Texas. Priscilla will bring size and athleticism to the position, and will look to earn playing time right away. Taylor brings a great all-around game to the position, and will likely play multiple positions for the Cowgirls this season. “I look for good things from this group. The returning players all have experience, and the seniors have
2
VOLLEYBALL seen significant playing time for three years now. This should be a breakout year for our outside hitters. The competition in the practice gym will be intense, which will create great depth and improve the position. The newcomers are very skilled and will push the returning players for playing time early in the season. Both Taylor and Priscilla have been on club teams that have won National Championships, so they are coming in with high hopes and expectations. If this group can continue to improve at the rate we saw late last season and in the spring, we will be a very dangerous team.”
Middle Hitter Returning Players: Erin Huckabay (RS-SO), Nicole Bowden (SO) Newcomers: Chelsie Taylor, Taylor Bustamento Two returning players and two talented freshmen will make up the group of middle hitters for 2009. After losing Jennifer Cook to graduation, this group will be led by two returners. Nicole Bowden returns after a solid freshman year where she ranked in the top 10 in the conference in blocks per game (.96) and hitting percentage (.235). She played in 105 games where she led the team in block assists (90), block solos (11), total blocks (101), was second in hitting percentage (.235), and was third on the team in points (276), points per game (2.63), kills (201), and kills per game (1.91). Erin Huckabay returns for her second year with the program after seeing action in 31 games and collecting 14 total blocks. After a solid spring season, Erin will look to be a solid contributor to the team. Chelsie Taylor comes to the Cowgirls program from Delcambre, Louisiana. She will bring athleticism, quickness and explosiveness to the program. Taylor Bustamento will also train at this position, and could see playing time here or on the outside. “This group will be instrumental in our success this season. We are fairly young at this position, so all four will need to mature very quickly. We had a great spring and were able to do some more things with our middles, which will help in their success. Our overall team success will really depend on how quickly these young players can adapt to the college game and the speed of the game. If they come along like we hope, we will difficult to shut down offensively.”

Setter
Libero/Defensive Specialist
Returning: Sarah Cartie (SR) Newcomer: Becky Bekelja (FR)
Returning Players: Katrina Mica (SO) Newcomers: Whitney Ellisor (FR)
Sarah Cartie returns for her final year leading the Cowgirls. She led the team in assists (1,004) and asst. per game (9.21), was third in digs (304) and digs per game (2.79) and was tied for fourth on the team in service aces (19). After again being named to the pre-season All-Southland Conference second team, Sarah looks to lay claim to be the best setter in the Southland Conference. Joining Sarah will be freshman Becky Bekelja. Becky comes to us from League City, Texas where she led her high school team to the Texas class 5A semi-finals. She also led her club team, AVA, to a USAV National Championship in the National division this summer where she was named to the All-Tournament team. “Sarah had a very solid junior year and learned a lot about being a leader. She matured during the year, and really started to blossom in the spring. She has taken a leadership role on this team, and will just continue to get better. She was again one of the top setters in the conference, and will look to take the next step as a leader and a player in 2009.” “Becky will bring a new dimension to this program. She is highly skilled and comes in as a very accomplished setter. She will push for playing time right away, and will make our practices very competitive. This will be a huge plus for our program, and will make us a much better team.”
Katrina Mica will look to return from a season ending back injury that sidelined her for most of the 2008 campaign. Prior to her injury, Katrina saw action in 33 games and collected 74 digs (2.24/game). Joining Katrina at the libero position will be freshman Whitney Ellisor, from Deer Park, Texas. Whitney joined the program in January after graduating early from high school. “Katrina had a good spring and has improved a lot. She was able to stay healthy and will look to battle for this open starting position. Whitney also had a very productive spring getting used to the speed of the college game. It will be beneficial for her to already have a spring season under her belt, and will only make this position more competitive. This is a wide-open position, so I am looking for some good competition from these two. In our offense and defense, ball control is very important. These two will be a huge key to our success this season. Either way, I think they will push each other to improve and both should see pretty significant playing time in one capacity or another.”
Right Side/ Opposite Hitter Returning Players: Ayshin Vasser (JR) Newcomers: Katie Kennedy (SO, TR-Univ. of LouisianaLafayette) Ayshin Vasser returns for her junior season after seeing action in 96 games, finishing third on the team in hitting percentage (.203) and fourth in total blocks (48). Joining Ayshin on the right side will be sophomore transfer Katie Kennedy from Moss Bluff, Louisiana. Katie played her freshman year at the University of Louisiana, and transferred to McNeese in January to join the Cowgirl program. “This position is vital to our success. The more versatile these two players can be, the better our offense will run. We need Ayshin to continue to improve and solidify this position. Katie is a very versatile player who can play the right side, left side or even the libero position, so we have solid depth at this position, which is something we haven’t had in the past.”
The Schedule
The schedule is again packed with high-level competition. Regular season tournaments at Mississippi State, the University of Alabama and the University of Louisiana-Monroe will make for a challenging preseason schedule. The Cowgirls will also be hosting its own Cowgirl Invitational for the second straight year, hosting Prairie View A&M, UT-Pan Am and the University of LouisianaLafayette. Also coming to Lake Charles will be Houston Baptist and Louisiana Tech for nonconference matches. With much of the returning team having significant game experience, 2009 looks to be another great year for Cowgirl volleyball. “These players really came into their own this spring. After a rough fall season with the two hurricane evacuations, the players really came together and played to their potential during the conference tournament. We narrowly missed being in the SLC Tournament Championship match, and I think this group is eager to prove that we belong at that level. The work ethic and the attitude have really come together and we had a very productive spring. With the addition of our newcomers, I think 2009 will be really special. This group of seniors is very hungry and have been close to that championship match twice, and are ready to get over the hump. The conference will be pretty competitive top to bottom, but if we can stay healthy, I think we can take that next step and compete for a conference championship. This group is eager to prove that we belong at the top of the SLC.”

LAKE CHARLES
The first people to settle the lake were Mr. and Mrs. LeBleu of Bordeaux, France. They arrived in 1781 and secured their home six miles east of the present site of Lake Charles, living in peaceful coexistence with several tribes of Indians. This area originally settled by the LeBleu's is now known as LeBleu Settlement. Other pioneers quickly ventured to Lake Charles. Among them was Charles Sallier who married LeBleu's daughter, Catherine. The Sallier's built their home on the lake, in the area now known as Lake Charles. After Charles Sallier built his home in this area, the lake became known as Charlie's Lake. By 1860 this area was being called "Charleston" or "Charles Town." Settlers at the turn of the century acquired property from the Indians or they homesteaded the Rio Hondo lands. The Rio Hondo which flowed through Lake Charles was later called Quelqueshue, an Indian term meaning "Crying Eagle" and still later Calcasieu. Little is known of these early residents except that they were a mixture of English, French, Spanish and Dutch. On March 7, 1861, Lake Charles was incorporated as the town of Charleston, Louisiana. The growth of the city was fairly slow until Captain Daniel Goos came in 1855. He established a lumber mill and schooner dock, now Goosport, and promoted a profitable trade with Texas and Mexican ports by sending his schooner down-river into the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the wood which built the city came from Goos' mill. Until the arrival of Goos, Jacob Ryan dominated the lumber industry. Ryan convinced the state government to move the parish seat to Lake
Charles. Later that year, Ryan and Samuel Kirby transferred the parish courthouse and jail to Lake Charles, at that time called Charleston. Six years after the city was incorporated, dissatisfaction over the name Charleston arose. On March 16, 1867, Charleston, Louisiana, was incorporated into the town of Lake Charles.
Quick Facts
The City of Lake Charles is conveniently located on Interstate-10 between Houston, TX and New Orleans, LA. Our sandy beaches are nestled on the Calcasieu River just 30 miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico. Lake Charles is connected to the Gulf by means of a deepwater ship channel and is the seat and port of entry of Calcasieu Parish. It is no mystery why Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana are referred to as the "Festival Capital of Louisiana." With more than 75 fairs, festivals and special events each year, our area has celebrations down to an art form - complete with food, music, lights and laughter. Contraband Days is one of Louisiana’s largest festivals and the City of Lake Charles' oldest festival. Contraband Days is a 12-day festival/carnival extravaganza filled with savory cajun food, family fun and festivities, and is attended by over 200,000 people annually. Each year during the first two weeks in May the city officially celebrates the legend of the pirate Jean Lafitte with its Contraband Days celebration. History tells us that Lafitte and his band of pirates once sailed the area's waterways and are said to have buried Lafitte's Contraband treasure somewhere in the vicinity of the lake. The festivities kick off every year with a pirate ship bombardment to "take control of the city" at the seawall of the Lake Charles Civic Center. A gang of rowdy and unruly buccaneers led by Jean Lafitte himself overruns the blazing cannons of the local militia, raises their "Jolly Roger" flag, captures the Mayor and forces him - with swords drawn - to walk the plank into the swirling waters of the lake.

McNeese State University
VOLLEYBALL
In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the official name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certified for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's first ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fiscal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

MEMORIAL GYM Memorial Gym is home to McNeese State volleyball who has a 33-9 record over the past five years, is located on the East side of campus and has seating for 315 fans. During the 2005 season, the Cowgirls played one match at Memorial Gym and played the remaining home schedule at the (SPAR) Sulphur Parks and Recreation Complex due to damages from Hurricane Rita. Constructed in 1949, the gym has gone through several renovations since then including a new floor, lighting and sound system and most recently new retractable bleachers. The facility played host to the 1997 Southland Conference Tournament. McNeese played only one home match in Memorial Gym in 2005 and played the rest of the home schedule at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center. The Cowgirls also played their entire 2006 home schedule at the Aquatic Center due to Hurricane Rita in 2005. The McNeese Cowboy Club donated $35,000 to the volleyball program before the 2007 season to pay for the new bleachers.
“We are certainly appreciative of the donation from the Cowboy Club,” McNeese coach Dale Starr said., which helped increase the capacity to the current 315 seats. The Cowgirls have enjoyed a home court advantage under Starr, compiling a 37-10 overall won-loss record during his tenure.
