2010 OUTLOOK

The Cowgirls enter the 2010 where they left off in 2009. “We picked up right where we left off. Last year was amazing to watch a team that didn’t have much confidence or chemistry grow as much as they did in one year. They went from a team that struggled to finish in the top half of the conference to just missing out on clinching the league championship,” said head coach Natalie Poole. In 2008, it was unclear if the Cowgirls would make the Southland Conference Tournament field in which they did. At the end of last year the Cowgirls were devastated with the loss in the SLC Tournament Championship game because they had made vast improvements from the previous season to get to that point. “We made such tremendous strides last year as a team, and we are continuing that again this year.” This years squad has a good balance of upperclassmen to lowerclassmen, with eleven juniors and seniors and eleven freshmen and sophomores. Eleven returners and eleven newcomers make up the 2010 team. The returners came back ready to get better with a vision in their heads about what they want to accomplish this season. The newcomers have made steady improvements and have made the transition well. The Cowgirls have worked on bettering their offensive game in the off season. Pitching is an area in which the Cowgirls lost a tremendous amount of talent. Two returnees who didn’t see much pitching time last year have worked extremely hard. The Cowgirls will see four new pitchers on the staff. “I feel like they are going to be a talented staff to watch this season.” McNeese looks to have an improved defensive, both mentally and physically. McNeese cut their errors in half last season and led the league with the best defensive percentage. McNeese led the SLC in errors in 2008. “I am extremely proud of this, as it aided in helping us stay in many games last year and gave us chances to win. We have continued on that path this year, and I am pleased with how we are playing defensively right now. We are athletic and smart under pressure. We are blessed to return seven of our nine defensive starters, and maturity goes a long way in this sport.” POSITION-BY-POSITION Pitcher: There will be quite a few new faces on the pitching staff. Leading the way will been a couple of junior college transfers. Temple Junior College transfer Kayla Shepherd will be sidelined for a few months due an injury and she is expected to return for conference play. San Jacinto Junior College transfer Kelsey McClain has shown a strong presence in the fall season and is expected to step up. The other additions to the pitching staff are freshmen Meagan Bond and Brianna Granger. Bond has shown maturity in the circle and has great movement and good arms speed. Granger is deceptively quick and moves the ball well too. “Our freshmen have grown a good bit this fall and are true competitors. I look forward to seeing them battle it out. We also have two returners to the Cowgirl pitching staff in junior Katie Shumaker and sophomore Tiffany Denham. Both have had an opportunity to work with me for a year and I feel like have grown a great deal and understand what it takes to be successful at this level. I think that their maturity in this program will help them to be successful.”

Catcher: The Cowgirls should be much improved behind the plate. Whitney Corbello stepped up towards the end of last season, works extremely well with our pitchers. Battling it out for the starting job with Corbello will Paris Junior College transfer Jessica Wilson. Wilson caught during the fall and is also a good hitter. She is expected to be a leading hitter as well. In addition to these two, freshman Hayleigh Maisel may catch as well as play the outfield.

and is one of the Cowgirls’ top returning hitters and a returning All-SLC honorable mention pick. Freshman Alex Corbello is expected to see playing time at first base

along with Mosser.

Shortstop: Junior Molly Guidry is expected to be the Cowgirls’ shortstop again

this year. Guidry is coming off a season where she led the team with a .386 slugging percent, 30 RBI’s, 64 total bases. Guidry was a All-SLC third team pick.

Second Base: Battling it out at second base is freshmen Kourtney Kober and Marissa Koetting. Both have matured quickly in the short time they have been here. In addition to Kober and Koetting, junior transfer Holly Lawrence may also see time at second base as will junior returner Whitney Corbello. Corbello is a utility player and can play the infield if needed. Third Base: Sophomore Dani Price is expected to hold down the third base position. Also battling it out with Price is freshman Alex Corbello. Corbello has improved in a short time and she has a tremendous arm. Outfield: The outfield will be solid with all three starters returning. Sophomore

Claire Terracina has great speed and a great arm. Senior Liz Morvant did a great job defensively last year and is expected to produce again this season both in the outfield and at the plate. Junior Lindsey Langner, a third team All-SLC performer and SLC all-tournament selection, moves well and has a good arm too. Expectations are high for these returnees because of their maturity on the field. Sophomore returnee Kelly Lindley, junior transfers Holly Lawrence and Lauren Lewis, and sophomore returnee April Fryar are all battling for starting positions in the outfield. Freshman catcher Hayleigh Maisel and freshman infielder Kourtney Kober can also play the outfield if needed. “I look forward to the battle for a starting position in the outfield. We are looking for people to do their job defensively, but even more so offensively,” said Poole.

THE SCHEDULE: Once again the Cowgirls will play a tough schedule that will in turn prepare them for the Southland Conference schedule and maybe further. “We begin the season by taking part in the University of Hawaii Paradise Classic. We will play Stanford, Hawaii, and a tough conference competitor Texas A&M Corpus Christi.” The Cowgirls will also participate in the University of Memphis’s Blues City Classic. Here the Cowgirls wills face Indiana State, Southeast Missouri, IPFW (Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. Fort Wayne), Memphis, and Appalachian State. The University of Buffalo and Louisiana Tech will take part in the McNeese Cowgirl Classic (Feb. 26-28) The Cowgirls will also have a tough non-conference schedule that has the Cowgirls playing LSU, UL-Lafayette and Southern, both at home and on the road. Other nonconference opponents the Cowgirls will face are South Alabama and Houston Baptist. A 30 game Southland Conference schedule will accompany the none-conference schedule. McNeese will face Northwestern State on March 2-3 in its SLC opening series. Other SLC home series will be against Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Southeastern La. “I think our girls play well at home in front of our faithful supporters that want to see them do great things on the field. I expect to see us grow quite a bit in that first month, which I believe is going to help us get off to a great start in conference play.”

McNeese State University

In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the official name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certified for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's first ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fiscal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

“Academics are our #1 priority in the softball program. Our student athletes are extremely lucky to attend an institution that provides them a quality, well rounded education. In addition to that, they do it with a personal touch. As an alumni myself, it is easy for me to promote this institution to prospective studentathletes because I experienced it myself. I received not only an undergraduate degree from McNeese, but also my master’s degree. I did, and our athletes are receiving a tremendous education from McNeese State which will lead to a bright future for each of them.” -Natalie Poole-
