McNeese State Coaching Staff

Neel DeRouen Head Coach

Kevin McArthur Assistant Coach

Neel DeRouen, one of the top golf instructors in the nation, is in his fifth season as the head golf coach at McNeese State. He has been voted Teacher of the Year by the Gulf States section of the PGA and was rated the fifth best golf instructor in the state of Louisiana by Golf Digest. A native of Lake Charles, DeRouen has served as Director of Golf at Gray Plantation and at the Lake Charles Country Club and was a golf instructor at LeTriomphe Country Club where he established the Golf Institute at LeTriomphe. He has worked with many PGA and mini-tour players as well as countless collegiate and amateur players. Serving as the team's assistant coach is Kevin McArthur, a native of Shreveport and a former Cowboy player. McArthur was the McNeese State team MVP in 1997 and he has also served as a caddy on both the PGA and the Nationwide tour for such golfers as Mike Heinen, Jim Gallaugher, Jr., Paul Azinger and Mike Hulbert. After his collegiate career McArthur served as an assistant professional at Southern Trace in Shreveport for four years.

McNeese State University Dr. Robert Hebert University President

Dr. Robert Hebert is president of McNeese State University and is in his 23rd year as such. He is a native of Meaux, LA, is a graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette and holds his Ph.D from Florida State. He is married to the former Lilly Ann Vincent and the couple has four sons - Greg, Chris, Gerry and Edward - all of whom are graduates of McNeese State and are physicians. The University has provided, for over a half century, service to its community and state and to the students who seek to secure their future through higher education. McNeese opened its doors in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College and as a division of the Louisiana State University system. Name changes later were made to John McNeese Junior College (1940) and to McNeese State (1950) when the university separated from LSU. In 1970 the school obtained its present name of McNeese State University. The university presently has an enrollment of 8,645 and has over 300 fulltime faculty members, half of whom possess the doctoral degree. The university is located on 580 acres in south Lake Charles. McNeese was named after John McNeese, a pioneer Southwest Louisiana educator who served as the first superintendent of education in Calcasieu Parish. He was also a cattle rancher and was renowned for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River, thus the school’s nickname of Cowboys. • established in 1939, McNeese State has an enrollment of 8,645. The university is located in Lake Charles, a city with a population of 80,000. The city is located in the Southwest corner of the state, 30 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 30 miles east of the Texas-Louisiana border. • McNeese’s schools of study are the Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, Nursing, Education, Business and the Graduate School. The school produces more teachers annually than any other university in the state. • In 1993, the Pulitzer Prize for fiction was awarded to Dr. Robert Olen Butler, then a member of the university’s Department of Languages. • Among Cowboys who have gone on to professional athletic fame have been Joe Dumars, Kerry Joseph, Ben Broussard, Buford Jordan, Leonard Smith, Kavika Pittman, Terry Irving and Tom Sestak. • Dumars is now the president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons and is also a member of the national basketball Hall of Fame.

Tommy McClelland Director of Athletics

Tommy McClelland is the seventh athletic director in McNeese State’s 69 year history and he has “made a difference” in the three years he has been in charge. The Basile native and Northwestern State graduate, was quick out of the box after his hire. He formulated and drove home a two week travel plan that brought McNeese athletics to communities in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. And, he put together a “Partner with the Pokes” program for businesses. In the short time he has served as the athletic director, more than $2.5 million in renovation and construction has been applied to the facilities with the turfing of Cowboy Stadium field and the completion of the Hodges Street field house. The renovation of the baseball facilities field, stands, dressing rooms, fieldhouse - was also completed and in late 2009, the construction of a new $8 million Jack Doland fieldhouse got underway. In the summer of 2008, McClelland was named as one of Southwest Louisiana’s “top 10 under 40” business leaders by the local magazine, the Times of Lake Charles. A native of Basile, McClelland is a graduate of Northwestern State (bachelor and master degrees) where he was a football (H-back and deep snapper) and track (javelin) letterman.
