Best Time to reach Coach Donald Williams: Head coach Brooks Donald Williams can generally be reached during the morning. All interviews should be coordinated through the Sports Information Offi ce by calling (337) 475-5926. Interview Policy: Media interviews of players and coaches are encouraged, and every effort will be made to accommodate media requests. In-person interviews are preferred, but telephone interviews should be arranged through the Sports Information Offi ce. Under no circumstances will student-athletes’ residence numbers or cell phone numbers be supplied to the media. Practice: As a general rule, practices are usually open to the public. Practice is the best time to reach the coaches and players at once. Efforts will be made to accommodate interview needs before or after practice as long as it is prearranged through the Sports Information Offi ce. Southland Tournament Champs and was also a member of the Southland Conference AllTournament Team. The Cowgirls welcome the return of sophomore guard Alaina Verdin, who suffered a season ending injury in the Southland Conference opener a year ago. Verdin averaged 4.4 points per game and 2.4 rebound per game before her rookie season was cut short. McNeese will play it toughest schedule under the direction of head coach Brooks Donald Williams. The Cowgirls will open the season by traveling to UCLA in the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 11. Also on the schedule are three preseason Top 20 teams including road games at the defending National Champs, Texas A&M on Dec. 30. The Cowgirls will also travel to preseason No. 1 Baylor on Dec. 21 and will host preseason No. 20 LSU on Dec. 16. “This schedule is extremely challenging,” said Williams, who enters her fi fth season as head coach at McNeese. “The Southland is going to be very tough this year, and in preparation, we wanted some challenges early to get us ready for conference play, and if we are fortunate enough to put ourselves in position to play in postseason again, we want to be better prepared.”
McNeese is coming off its most successful season in school history after posting a 26-7 overall record and 15-1 Southland Conference record. The overall record ties the best NCAA turnaround from the previous season with the 2002 Valparaiso team. The 26 overall victories and the 15 conference victories are the most wins in school history. The Cowgirls return 11 letterwinners including three starters from the 2010-11 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in school history. The Cowgirls lost in the fi rst round to Texas A&M, the eventual National Champions. McNeese also captured the Southland Conference title and its fi rst Southland Conference Tournament title during its historic season. The Cowgirls return four of their top fi ve scorers including fi rst team All-Southland Conference performer in junior Ashlyn Baggett and second team AllSouthland Conference pick in twin sister, Caitlyn. Ashlyn led the Cowgirls and ranked second in the Southland Conference in scoring with 16.7 points per game last year and 19.6 points per game in conference games. Baggett also led the Cowgirls with a 36.5 threepoint fi eld goal percent, 1.5 steals and 32.1 minutes played and was the Southland Conference Tournament MVP. Caitlyn led McNeese and ranked third in the Southland Conference with 4.4 assists per game and was second on the team in scoring with 11.6 points per game. Baggett shot 82.6 percent from the free throw line. She also tied for second on the team with 1.4 spg and was named to the Southland Conference All-Tournament Team as well as team MVP. Senior Kendra Wells returns for her fi nal season after leading the Cowgirls in rebounds for the third consecutive year and ranked seventh in the league with 8.0 rebounds per game. A HISTORICAL SEASON 2011 NOTES
McNeese enjoyed a historical season in 2011 when the Cowgirls went on to win a school record 26 games, producing a 26-7 overall record. McNeese also won the Southland Conference title, its fi rst Southland Conference Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. The turnaround from a 7-22 overall record during the 200910 season to its 26-7 overall record during the 2010-11 season equalled the best turnaround in NCAA history. The turnaround was a 17 game difference from the previous season in which Valporaiso also did it from the 2000-2001 season to the 20012002 season with the same records. The 20 win season was the fi rst in 24 years and only the fourth in program history. The Cowgirls set several records during the season which all started with a 6-0 Southland Conference start, the best start in school history. McNeese went on to produce a 15-1 league record and produced the longest SLC winning streak of the season at 12 games. That streak tied the longest school winning streak with the 1980-81 Cowgirl squad. McNeese began the season 14-5 overall, the best start in school history in 14 years. The 1996-97 team also began the year with a 14-5 record. The Cowgirls were perfect at home, producing a 13-0 home court record. Another home court record the Cowgirls broke was its attendance record. The Cowgirls played eight home games in which the attendance was over 1,000 and set the all-time school home attendance record several times during the season with the new record set in the fi nal home game of the season against Lamar on March 5 in which 3,256 fans saw the Cowgirls clinch the regular season title. McNeese ended the season ranked 10th in the NCAA in home attendance behind Louisville, Iowa, St. John’s (N.Y.), Michigan St., West Virginia, Gonzaga, Texas A&M, Boise State and Oregon. The Cowgirls broke into a Mid-Major Top 25 poll during the season, coming in at No. 25 in the collegeinsider.com poll on Feb. 15. McNeese ended the season ranked 15th in the fi nal poll. During the season the men’s and women’s teams were one of three schools along with Duke and Princeton who were undefeated at home up until the fi nal week of the regular season. The season culminated with the Cowgirls winning the Southland Conference regular season title then its fi rst Southland Conference Tournament title and its fi rst NCAA appearance. The Cowgirls lost 47-87 in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament to Texas A&M, the eventual National Champions. Head coach Brooks Donald Williams was named the Southland’s and Louisiana’s “Coach of the Year”. Ashlyn and Caitlyn Baggett were both named to the All-Southland Conference team. Ashlyn was named to the All-Louisiana fi rst team while Caitlyn was named to the honorable mention team. Both players were named to the All-Southland Conference Academic team and Ashlyn was named the SLC’s women’s basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. Baggett also earned CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District VI second team honors.

2011 SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE CHAMPS McNeese won its fi rst outrigth Southland Conference 2011 CONFERENCE NOTES title and second overall in school history in 2011 with a 70-69 home victory over Lamar on March 5. McNeese didn’t lose another game until its loss to National Champion Texas A&M in the NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls ended the season with a 15-1 conference record. The 15 victories are a school record and went undefeated (13-0) at home. McNeese produced a 12 game winning streak during the season which ties the longest in school history with the 1980-81 team. The streak was also the longest in the Southland Conference. At one point during the season, McNeese (men’s and women’s) teams were one of three undefeated teams at home during the season. The other two were Duke and Princeton. the

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CHAMPS McNeese advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament for the 12th time in school history and won its fi rst tournament title in 2011. The appearance was the third under head coach Brooks Donald Williams. McNeese won its fi rst tournament game since 2005 with a 65-55 win over Southeastern La. in the fi rst round of the tournament. The Cowgirls went on to pick up a 66-50 victory over UTSA in the semifi nal game before defeating Central Arkansas 71-50 in the championship game. In the championship game, the Cowgirls held a 3726 halftime lead and outscored the Sugra Bears 34-24 in the second half to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls shot 54.7 percent from the fi eld and was led in scoring by tournament MVP Ashlyn Baggett. Baggett led the Cowgirls with 23 points while sister Caitlyn chipped in 15 points and dished out six assists. Kendra Wells led all players with 13 rebounds. Both Caitlyn and Wells were also named to the all-tournament team.

McNeese advanced to its fi rst NCAA Tourament by winning the Southland Conference Tournament and the right to represent the league in the “Big Dance”. The Cowgirls didn’t have far to travel for its fi rst NCAA Tournament game as the Cowgirls were sent to Shreveport, La. McNeese, Louisiana Tech, Rutgers and Texas A&M made up the region that would play in the CenturyTel Center. McNeese dropped its game 87-47 against a much more talented Texas A&M squad that went on to win the National Championship. BROOKS DONALD WILLIAMS HEAD COACH
Brooks Donald Williams led the McNeese to its most successful season in school history in 2011 by wining the Southland Conference title, only the second in program history. Williams didn’t stop there as she guided the Cowgirls to their fi rst Southland Conference Tournament title and fi rst NCAA Tournament appearance. For her accomplishments on the court, Williams was named the league’s and Louisiana’s “Coach of the Year”. Williams enters her fi fth season after guiding the Cowgirls to a 26-7 overall record, 15-1 Southland Conference record and an undefeated home record (15-0). The 20 win season is the fi rst for the Cowgirls in 24 years. The overall record matched the best turnaround in NCAA history following a 7-22 overall record in 2009-10. The 26 overall and the 15 conference wins are also school records. The Cowgirls got off to their best conference start (6-0) in school history and the 14-5 start was the best overall start in 14 years. McNeese tied the school’s longest winning streak (12 games) and won 19 of its last 21 games of the season. McNeese broke into a poll for the fi rst time in school history, the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Women’s Basketball poll Feb. 15, 2011, coming in at no. 25. The Cowgirls ended the season ranked No. 15 in the fi nal poll. On the court, Williams won her 50th career game in a 73-63 home victory over Northwestern State on Feb. 19, 2011 and has guided the Cowgirls to the Southland Conference Tournament three out of the last four years. In 2009, McNeese picked up a milestone victory with a win over threetime National Champions Louisiana Tech. That year the Cowgirls shot a school record, led the Southland Conference (for the second straight year) and ranked 76th in the nation with a 71.8 free throw percent in 2009. The Cowgirls also ranked second in the SLC with a 34.3 threepoint fi eld goal percent. Off the court, Williams and the Cowgirls have participated in numerous community service activities including the Ethel Precht Breast Cancer Walk and the Jeff Davis Bank Toys for Tots drive for the past four years. Williams has ignited a fan following in the community, speaking to groups about her passion and motivation about the revival of the program. Williams’ community and local recruiting efforts have increased attendance 138% in two seasons. Williams was named one of Southwest Louisiana’s Up and Coming Under 40 recipients by the Times of Southwest Louisiana and Fusion Five Magazine in 2009. In her fi rst season, Williams guided the Cowgirls to a 10-21 record and second place tie in the East Division after being picked to fi nish sixth in the preseason polls. Williams led the Cowgirls to victories in four of their last six games and advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament. Williams’ 2007-08 squad broke seven McNeese records (six team and one individual), tied two, and set a Southland Conference record with 16 three-pointers made in a road victory at Lamar. The Cowgirls also handed the Cardinals their fi rst home loss of the season that night. The Cowgirls also upset longtime national powerhouse Stephen F. Austin and eventual Southland Conference Tournament champion and NCAA participant Texas-San Antonio. www.mcneesesports.com
McNeese ended the season leading the league in free throw shooting percent, ranked second in three-point fi eld goals made and assist-turnover ratio, and ranked third in three-point fi eld goal percent. Williams, McNeese State’s ninth head coach, brought interest and excitement back to the Cowgirl program in her fi rst season and continues to build something special at McNeese. In her fi rst full recruiting season at McNeese, Williams continued to show why she is a proven recruiter by signing the Louisiana 3A and 5A state MVP’s and the Northeast Louisiana “Player of the Year”. Most recently, Williams signed the 2009 Louisiana Sports Writers’ Miss Basketball and Class B outstanding player and MVP, along with two local all-state players and a national junior college scoring leader. A native of Jennings, La., Williams spent three years at the University of Southern Mississippi. Prior to her stint with the Lady Eagles, she spent one season at the University of Memphis and three years at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. A proven recruiter, Williams served as recruiting coordinator at all three universities. She signed several prep standouts throughout her recruiting years and all three recruiting classes at Southern Miss ranked among some of the best in the nation. She signed the Arkansas “Player of the Year”, Mississippi “Player of the Year”, a junior college All-American, as well as ten Top 100 players in the country. While at Southern Miss, Williams helped the Eagles improve its program each year and went 15-15 her last season with a 9-7 record in Conference USA. Her 2005 class consisted of both the Mississippi and Arkansas prep player of the year as well as a junior college All-American. Her 2006 and 2007 recruiting classes included Louisiana all-state performers from Acadiana High, Jena High, Dominican High and Dutchtown High School. Between college stops, Williams served temporarily as head coach at St. Thomas More High in Lafayette, La. As a prep player at Jennings High, Williams earned All-State, AllParish and All-District honors. She was a four-year starter and played in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association all-star game, serving as team captain. Her Jennings squad won four straight district titles. Williams was also a member of the Acadiana Stars AAU program during her prep days, participating in state and national tournaments. She was a member of the Lady Bulldogs squad at Mississippi State University, from which she holds a bachelor degree, but had her playing career was sidelined due to an injury. Williams is the daughter of Jennings community members, David and Brenda Donald and the granddaughter and great niece of Dan L. Donald and Walter “Bunk” Donald, former Jennings business leaders and owners of W.B. Donald Chevrolet and Cadillac and founders of Jeff Davis Bank & Trust Co. Williams’ uncle, Dan Donald, currently serves as President of Jeff Davis Bank & Trust Co.

GARRY BRODHEAD
ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Garry Brodhead is in his fi fth season at McNeese and second as associate head coach. Brodhead, is known for his knowledge of the game, enthusiasm for skill development and player improvement. His duties include defensive coordinator, coaching the point guards, directing preseason and postseason individual workouts, scheduling, scouting, recruiting (Louisiana and Texas) and game fi lm editing. Broadhead also serves as the academic coordinator and strength training liason. “Garry’s excitement in academics has been contagious for our girls. He makes studying fun for our players and our continuing improvement is extremely evident,” said head coach Brooks Williams. The veteran joined the Cowgirl staff after a successful prep career with the Teurlings High (Lafayette, La.) girls basketball team where he compiled a 297-78 overall record and won the 2002 state title. He earned “Coach of the Year” honors twice (2007 and 2002) and led the Lady Rebels to nine district titles and six trips to the Louisiana Sweet 16. Besides the 2002 state title, Brodhead led Teurlings to the state runners-up once and the semifi nals four times. His 2002 team ranked in the USA Top 25 and he had three teams ranked no. 1 in
the state. He was named district “Coach of the Year” nine times, parish “Coach of the Year” three times and Acadiana “Coach of the Year” twice. Brodhead also spent time as an AAU coach. He helped the Acadiana Stars to the National Championship Tournament twice where they fi nished in fi fth place in 2006 and eighth place in 1997. The 1980 graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette and former pole vaulter for the Cajuns from 1975-80, earned his Business Administration degree and also served as a graduate assistant for the Lady Cajuns basketball team during the 1994-95 season. Garry and wife Andrea have three children (Blair, Ashley and Beau) and three granddaughters (Celie and Emmie Richard and Brynnan Boyd).

SALLIE GUILLORY ASSISTANT COACH
Sallie Guillory is in her third season as an assistant coach after spending eight years at Teurlings Catholic High in Lafayette, La. After two years coaching the back court, Guillory is bringing her toughness and grit to the front court. Guillory coached the posts three of her six years as an assistant at Teurlings. She will also take over as recruiting coordinator as well as marketing and
promotions. “Sallie will do a great job with our posts. We need her grit in the paint. The kids are going to feed off her toughness and work ethic. This is going to be a very positive change for them and for our program,” said head coach Brooks Williams. Guillory served as Teurlings assistant coach from 2001-2006 under present Cowgirl associate head coach Garry Brodhead. Guillory became the head coach at Teurlings in 2007 after Brodhead came to McNeese. “We are headed in a great direction with Sallie at the helm of our recruiting. She is organized and certainly will go the extra mile to help us sign the very best talent, student-athlete and best fi t for our program. We already, in a short time, seen a major swing in our recruiting with our staff. I am very excited for our future with Sallie’s efforts. Guillory helped Teurlings to four district championships, three semifi nals and a state runner-up as an assistant. As head coach, Guillory led Teurlings to two district, bidistrict and regional fi nalist from 2007-2009. Guillory was also named the District 5-4A Coach of the Year both seasons. She served as the Acadiana Stars AAU coach from 2001-2009 and was named the Louisiana AAU state championship coach in 2005 and 2006. Guillory spent time as the assistant track coach where she helped Teurlings to district titles in the girls javelin, 1600 and 3200 run, boys discus, shot put, 1600 and 3200 run in 2008. She helped produce the 2008 boys state shot put champion. In 2009, Guillory coached the district 5-4A girls 3200 run championship team. A native of Lafayette, La. and a 2005 graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette and 2001 graduate of Lafayette High. Guillory was a four year letterwinner in basketball and softball. Guillory was an all-district selection in both sports her senior year.

KACIE CRYER
ASSISTANT COACH Kacie Cryer rejoins the Cowgirl coaching staff as a full-time assistant. “We are certainly thrilled about Kacie re-joining ourCowgirl staff and family. She is young and eager to learn, and most importantly has a passion for the game and our players. It will be a very smooth transition since she has been in our program before and knows our system, our kids and our expectations,” said head coach Brooks Williams. Cryer was a Cowgirl graduate assistant from 2008-10 before taking a university recruiting job at Northwestern State last year. Cryer will oversee all travel, scouting and fi lm editing as well as assists with guard and post play, marketing and promotions and recruiting. The native of Abbeville, La., Cryer prepped at Teurlings Catholic High in Lafayette, LA. where she played for current Cowgirl associate head coach Garry Brodhead. Cryer was a member of the 2002 state championship team and was a fi rst team alldistrict and parish selection. Cryer spent her collegiate playing career at LSUShreveport from 2004-2008 and earned her degree in General Studies. She is scheduled to complete her masters degree this Fall. Cryer is the daughter of Charlie and Kristie Cryer. She has two brothers, Cody who is a member of the McNeese golf team and younger brother Chris is a Freshman on the Norhtwestern State football team. “Kacie has grown tremendously since her stint with us, and she is extremely anxious to get going. She is a coaches daughter and has a better understanding of the dedication it takes to be successful. I could not be happier that Kacie decided to re-join us. I think she is an excellent fi t for our program to continue to move forward.”

LAKE CHARLES
The fi rst people to settle the lake were Mr. and Mrs. LeBleu of Bordeaux, France. They arrived in 1781 and secured their home six miles east of the present site of Lake Charles, living in peaceful coexistence with several tribes of Indians. This area originally settled by the LeBleu's is now known as LeBleu Settlement. Other pioneers quickly ventured to Lake Charles. Among them was Charles Sallier who married LeBleu's daughter, Catherine. The Sallier's built their home on the lake, in the area now known as Lake Charles. After Charles Sallier built his home in this area, the lake became known as Charlie's Lake. By 1860 this area was being called "Charleston" or "Charles Town." Settlers at the turn of the century acquired property from the Indians or they homesteaded the Rio Hondo lands. The Rio Hondo which fl owed through Lake Charles was later called Quelqueshue, an Indian term meaning "Crying Eagle" and still later Calcasieu. Little is known of these early residents except that they were a mixture of English, French, Spanish and Dutch. On March 7, 1861, Lake Charles was incorporated as the town of Charleston, Louisiana. The growth of the city was fairly slow until Captain Daniel Goos came in 1855. He established a lumber mill and schooner dock, now Goosport, and promoted a profi table trade with Texas and Mexican ports by sending his schooner down-river into the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the wood which built the city came from Goos' mill. Until the arrival of Goos, Jacob Ryan dominated the lumber industry. Ryan convinced the state government to move the parish seat to Lake Charles. Later that year, Ryan and Samuel Kirby transferred the parish courthouse and jail to Lake Charles, at that time called Charleston. Six years after the city was incorporated, dissatisfaction over the name Charleston arose. On March 16, 1867, Charleston, Louisiana, was incorporated into the town of Lake Charles.

Contraband Days is one of Louisiana’s largest festivals and the City of Lake Charles' oldest festival. Contraband Days is a 12-day festival/carnival extravaganza fi lled with savory cajun food, family fun and festivities, and is attended by over 200,000 people annually. Each year during the fi rst two weeks in May the city offi cially celebrates the legend of the pirate Jean Lafi tte with its Contraband Days celebration. History tells us that Lafi tte and his band of pirates once sailed the area's waterways and are said to have buried Lafi tte's Contraband treasure somewhere in the vicinity of the lake. The festivities kick off every year with a pirate ship bombardment to "take control of the city" at the seawall of the Lake Charles Civic Center. A gang of rowdy and unruly buccaneers led by Jean Lafi tte himself overruns the blazing cannons of the local militia, raises their "Jolly Roger" fl ag, captures the Mayor and forces him - with swords drawn - to walk the plank into the swirling waters of the lake.

McNeese State University
In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the fi rst superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the offi cial name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certifi ed for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's fi rst ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fl eeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fi scal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

Dr. Philip C. Williams President Dr. Philip C. Williams is the sixth president
of McNeese State University. He attended public schools in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974 as a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with honors in history. He earned his law degree at the Columbia University School of Law in New York City, with a certifi cate of achievement with honors from the Parker Program in Foreign and International law. During the course of his legal profession, he practiced corporate law and served as administrative vice president and counsel for Sea World, Inc. In 1994, Dr. Williams returned to Chapel Hill to earn his Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration. Prior to beginning his career in higher education, he served for one year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. Most recently he was President at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. •- McNeese has an enrollment of 8, 294. Tommy McCleland Athletic Director
Tommy McClelland is the seventh athletic director at McNeese State's 72year history. He officially moved up from an interim position to full-time in the Spring of 2008. The Basile native and Northwestern State graduate, was quick out of the box. He formulated and drove home a two week travel plan that brought McNeese athletics to communities in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. And, he put together a "Partner with the Pokes" program for businesses. In the short time he has served as the athletic director, more than $2.5 million in renovation and construction has been applied to the facilities with the turfing of Cowboy Stadium field and the completion of the Hodges Street field house. . The addition of seating and team area improvements at the soccer field, covered seating behind home plate at the softball field along with the renovation of the baseball facilities- field, stands, dressing room, and the construction of a new $8 million Jack Doland fieldhouse were recently completed in July. The department also conducted the most successful football season ticket campaign in school history in 2008, selling more than 8,000 season tickets. In the summer of 2008, McClelland was named as one of Southwest Louisiana's "Top 10 under 40" business leaders by the local magazine, the Times of Lake Charles. A native of Basile, McClelland is a graduate of Northwestern State where he was a football (H-back and deep snapper) and track (javelin) letterwinner. In high school at Basile High he earned all-state football honors and was the district's defensive MVP his senior year. Prior to being named McNeese athletic director, he served the university as coordinator of athletic events, sales and marketing. McClelland, who holds both a bachelor and master degree from Northwestern State, was also a graduate assistant in the athletics department at Northwestern State and worked at the Southland Conference office, assisting with championship events and securing corporate sponsorships.

McNeese State's Dowell "Doc" Fontenot Sports Medicine Center is an ultra-modern facility and one of the most finest in the South. It is named after longtime McNeese athletic trainer Dowell Fontenot who was also a national champion boxer during his undergraduate days at the university and is a member of the McNeese Hall of Fame. The center is located South of the Jack V. Doland Athletic Complex. Zeb Hawkins and Alan Bryant serve as McNeese State's strength and conditioning coaches. Hawkins is in his fifth season as head coach and Bryant was named assistant in January (2011). Hawkins is a graduate of Northwestern State and Bryant is a McNeese graduate. The facility renovations were completed in July and it is named in honor of Charles Kuehn, McNeese State's first All-American. The weight room is located in the newly renovated fieldhouse at the Jack V. Doland Athletic Complex. It is the second largest in the state behind LSU. The 8,000 square feet weight room includes 16 multi-purpose racks, 80,000 poounds of weights, nine 52 inch at screen television sets, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stationary bike and a $12,000 surround sound system. A 12 foot McNeese logo sets off the room from the center oor. Life Fitness Company and Hammer Strength Company outfitted the room, maiking it a showcase facility.

The Burton Memorial Coliseum Complex is under the operation of McNeese State University and has four full-service buildings. The Coliseum was constructed in 1976 with tax money voted on by the residents of Calcasieu Parish on land donated by the late W.T. Burton. The Coliseum itself is a domed arena with permanent seating for 6,500 and temporary seating for another 2,000. The roof of the dome is 105 feet high, with over 24,000 square feet of concrete floor space and the building is air conditioned and heated. The H.G. Chalkley Room, a banquetstyle room in the coliseum, can seat 200 people comfortably and is available for any number of activities. Another part of the Burton Complex is the 160,000 square feet of floor space in the Livestock and Exhibit Building. A massive roof covers four acres of excellent facilities for beef, swine, sheep and horses, as well as a judging area, additional pens and show office. Each livestock area has its own grooming area, complete with water

and electrical service. The fourth part of the complex is the Burton Agricultural Arena, a 50,000 square foot, covered arena with seating for 1,000 people. The facility is excellent for equestrian and rodeo events with sound and lighting, restrooms and a concession area. The four parts of the complex can be utilized together or separately and work well together. The entire Complex is situated on 65 acres and has parking for 3,500 vehicles. An added convenience is the recreational vehicle hookups available for 275 units. All hookups have electricity, water and sewerage. The Coliseum is located approximately three miles South of the McNeese State University campus.

McNeese has been picked by the league’s coaches and Sports Information Directors to repeat as Southland Conference Champions. The Cowgirls recieved nine first place votes in each poll. McNeese captured the Southland Conference title, Southland Conference Tournament Title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

The 2011 Southland Conference Champions were presented their rings on Oct. 21 following their annual Sneak Peak event. Each player was presented her ring by a member of the McNeese faculty or staff.

HALL OF FAME
Vicky Chapman (1974, 1975) Inducted 1985
The McNeese State Hall of Fame was founded in 1980 by sports information director Louis Bonnette. The Hall recognizes those who have distinguished themselves in athletics at the University. Louis Membership in the Hall now numbers Bonnette over 100. Bonnette serves as the chairman of the Hall of Fame committee which includes Bobby Dower, Johnny Suydam, Ron Hayes, Pam LaFosse, Dr. Daryl Burckel, Kenneth Sweeney and Tommy McClelland. The Hall of Fame is located in the Jack Doland Fieldhouse.
Vicky was the first standout basketball player for the Cowgirls, competing during the first years of McNeese women’s basketball. In those fi rst two years of 1975-76 and 1976-77, the Cowgirls only played 40 games and played as an independent. Chapman played in 39 games and scored 989 points for a 23.0 average, which is the top career average for a Cowgirl. She was a two-time most valuable player and an all-Louisiana selection. Besides leading the team in scoring in both seasons she also led in rebounds. Her 15.8 average for the 1975-76 season continues to stand as a school record. She played three seasons of professional basketball, served as an assistant coach at McNeese and is a teacher on coach in the state system.
Pat Jean (1980-83) Inducted 1996
During a four year career with the Cowgirls, she set just about every team record. She still holds the school records for points scored (2,461) and rebounds (1,571). She also ranks second in the state of Louisiana in career rebounds and is seventh in points scored. Jean was a four-time all-Louisiana selection and an all-Southland Conference pick for the only year that she played in the conference. In 1983, she also led the conference in rebounding with a 13.7 mark. She continues to hold 14 McNeese State records.

Tangela McAlister (1992, 1993) Inducted 2006
Tangela is the latest of the Cowgirls to earn all-American honors, having been named to the Basketball Times squad following the 1992-93 season. She only played two years for the Cowgirls, coming from the junior college ranks, but during those two seasons she led McNeese in scoring and rebounding and wound up seventh on the school’s all-time scoring chart with 1.140 points. Twice she was named to the all-Southland Conference and all-Louisiana teams and was a two-time team MVP. During the 1991-92 season she averaged 21.9 points per game while leading the Southland Conference and ranked nationally. Following graduation she entered the banking fi eld and now resides in Nacogdoches, TX.
She was a two sport standout in basketball and softball and a four year letter winner in both. She also spent six years as an assistant women’s basketball coach and three years as tennis coach. In basketball, she was a point guard and at one time held the school record for career assists with 260. Twice she led the team in free throw shooting accuracy and concluded her career with 797 points and a 2.0 assists average. In softball, she was the team MVP in 1979 with a .439 batting average and seven home runs. She was also a three time all-Louisiana. After her coaching career at McNeese, she took over the head coaching position at Cy-Fair High School in Texas where she has developed one of the top girls programs in the state.

Shante’ Perry was a two-time All-SLC pick during her four year career at McNeese. Perry scored her 1,000th point against UT-Arlington on Feb. 11, 2009 and ended her career as the school’s ninth all-time leading scorer. In her senior season, she led the Cowgirls in scoring and ranked second in the Southland Conference with 15.7 ppg. She ranked second in the SLC with 2.3 three-pointers made per game, third with an 82.6 free throw percent. Perry ranked among the nations best in points per game, three-point percent, field goal percent, three-point field goal percent and three-point field goals per game. She scored in double figures in 24 games and set a McNeese and tied a SLC record with nine three-pointers made in the Cowgirls’ 71-66 victory over Louisiana Tech (Jan. 3, 2009). In that game, she also tied a McNeese single game record for points scored with 39.

Sonny Watkins and Bridget Martin served as co-head coaches for four years (1990-94). During that time they were one of a few co-head coaches in the nation. The duo guided McNeese to three Southland Conference Tournaments and produced two All-Southland Conference players in Robin Daniels and Tangela McAlister. Both players garnered individual honors as well. Daniels was named the league’s “Freshman of the Year” in 1992 while McAlister was named the SLC “Newcomer of the Year” that same year. In 1993, McAlister was named to the Basketball Times All-America Team, only the fourth and last McNeese player to become an All-American. Watkins later served as the Universities Athletic Director from 1995-2007 while Martin went on to serve as head coach for seven more years before being named McNeese’s Associate AD for Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator in 2002, titles she still holds to date.
