Tommy MCCLELLAND Athletic Director

Tommy McClelland was named athletic director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008. Prior to being named Athletic Director, McClelland served as Interim Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director of Internal Affairs. In his short time at McNeese McClelland has been quick out of the gate. He started the “Partner with the Pokes program that provides a smaller, more attractive sponsorship package for local small businesses. On top of the “Partner with the Pokes program, McClelland has raised over $2.8 million in private donations since April of 2007 and was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships over $750,000, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships. He also planned and helped implement a multi-city summer tour, the “Cowboy Round-Up Tour. The Cowboy Round-Up tour is a two week period in June where coaches, administrators and other department staff travel to various cities in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Fans have the opportunity to meet with coaches and administrators to talk about Cowboy and Cowgirl athletics. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales in 2008 for the then highest total in school history to 8,008 and then topped that at 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single game attendance records in Volleyball, Softball, Soccer and Women’s Basketball. McClelland is not just limited to selling tickets. He devised a plan to resurrect the “M Club for former student-athletes. He negotiated a new syndicated radio network for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Included in that deal was the first ever radio station that was solely dedicated to broadcasting women’s basketball. McClelland also re-negotiated football’s TV replay contract from a one station deal to broadcasting games on three different stations and the internet. One of the main goals for McClelland was to improve the life of the student-athletes and increase the fans experience. The most effective way to accomplish both goals is to improve athletic facilities. In 2011, under McClelland’s leadership, McNeese State hosted the First Round of the NIT postseason tournament as they hosted ACC member Boston College live on ESPNU. Even though McNeese State has had a tremendous amount of success in athletics, McClelland prides himself on building character in his studentathletes. In four of the past five years, McNeese State has led the Southland Conference with student-athletes being named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition McClelland has guided the resurgence of the department’s APR success. Since taking over, McNeese State has gone from four teams with or above the required .925 APR rating to 13, and projections have all 16 at or above that number. Since the beginning of his tenure, the community service hours performed by the MSU student-athletes have triple to over 2,000 each year. In everything that McClelland preaches, one word always comes to the forefront...Championships. “Championships in the classroom, on the field/court and in life. That is what motivates me to become the athletics administrator I desire to be.â€? MEMORIAL GYM-- HOME TO COWGIRL VOLLEYBALL

Memorial Gym is home to McNeese State Volleyball who has a 49-18 record since the 2004 season, is located on the East side of campus and has seating for 315 fans. During the 2005 season, the Cowgirls played one match in Memorial Gym and played the remaining home schedule at the (SPAR) Sulphur Parks and Recreation Complex due to damages from Hurricane Rita. Constructed in 1949, the gym has gone through several renovations since then including a new floor, lighting and sound system and retractable bleachers. The facility played host to the 1997 Southland Conference Tournament. McNeese played only one home match in Memorial Gym in 2005 and played the rest of the home schedule at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center. The Cowgirls also played their entire 2006 home schedule at the Aquatic Center due to Hurricane Rita in 2005. The McNeese Cowboy Club donated $35,000 to the volleyball program before the 2007 season for new bleachers. 40
