“Burn the Ships”
Commitment is the foundation of all Success This phrase “Burn the Ships” comes from a historic conquest of history when, in 1519, Spanish Conquistador Hernando Cortez landed in Mexico on the shores of the Yucatan, with only one objective…seize the great treasures known to be there, hoarded by the Aztecs. Cortez was committed to his mission and his quest for riches is legendary. Cortez was an excellent motivator, he convinced more than 500 soldiers and 100 sailors to set sail from Spain to Mexico, commanding 11 ships, to take the world’s riches treasure. The historic question is “how a small band of Spanish soldiers arrived in a strange country and swiftly brought about the overthrow of a large and powerful empire that was in power for over six centuries?” For Cortez, the answer was easy. It was all or nothing! A Complete and Total Commitment. Here’s how Cortez got the “buy in” from the rest of his men. He took away the option of failure. It was conquer and be hero’s and enjoy the spoils of victory…or DIE! When Cortez and his men arrived on the shores of the Yucatan he rallied the men for one final pep talk before leading his men into battle, and utters these three words that changed the course of history. “Burn the Ships”. He met with resistance from his men. “Burn the ships,” he repeated. He then uttered these words “if we are going home, we are going home in their ships”. With that, Cortez and his men burned their own ships, and by burning their own ships, the commitment level of the men was raised to a whole new level. A level much higher than any of the men, including Cortez, could have ever imagined. Amazingly, the men conquered the Aztecs and had succeeded in something where others had been unsuccessful for six centuries. With the victory Cortez and his men took the treasure. Why did they win? They had no escape. No fall back position. They had no choice! It was “succeed or die”. Their ships were burned. They had no way to get back. Their backs were to the wall. To “really succeed” you must have an attitude much like that of Cortez and his men. Cortez and his men did not have a “crutch” or “fall back position”. They frankly didn’t have any options. It was simply “succeed or DIE”. Pretty strong position, isn’t it? How would you like to be engaged in fighting someone with that level of motivation and commitment? This is the level of motivation and commitment you must have. The “BURN YOUR SHIP” level of motivation and commitment. Take away your crutches and excuses and burn the ships that are keeping you from achieving your goals. Identify the ships in your life that are keeping you from accomplishing dreams. I have a saying and it’s “Dream Big”. I have a new saying and it’s “Burn your Ship”. You see, whatever prevents you from achieving your goals and dreams are ships that must be burned. Not dismantled, or run ashore…but burned and destroyed. If we know that our ships are still out there, when things get tough we instinctively head for our ships so we can escape. It’s just human nature. The path of least resistance. This level of thinking and commitment sees sacrifice as a positive thing, not something weird or impossible, but something to be cherished and fought for. Cortez didn’t allow himself or his men to have the option of going back to Spain. By removing this option, Cortez and his men were forced to focus on how they could make the mission successful. And so it is with you. How can you make the missions in your life successful? Commitment is the foundation of success. Not a single accomplishment is ever achieved without it. By focusing on commitment, we seal our future.
Shorter Explaining of the Story of “Burn The Ships” A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into boats, sailed to the enemy’s country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them. Addressing his men before the first battle, he said, “You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice—we win, or we perish! They won. Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat. Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN, essential to success. “

SMITH’S VIEW ON ALL POSITIONS
Senior Meagan Bond and sophomore Bianca Lilly return in the circle, both will take on big roles during the 2013 season. Meagan threw a major portion of the innings last year and we look for her to potentially do the same. If Meagan takes a “bulldog” attitude to the circle each time she is handed the ball, we are going to be very successful. She has a lot of poise and experience, but it’s what you do with each that makes you a “big time” pitcher. Bianca threw a lot of innings for us at the end of the 2012 season and into the post season and did an outstanding job. She showed the coaching staff that she can too be one of the “go too” pitchers in 2013. “B” has great movement and changes speeds well. If she can be a consistent pitcher for us this year, we will have a great “1-2 punch” in the circle. Our newcomers, Jamie Allred and Emily Vincent, bring stability and diversity on our pitching staff. Each one of these pitchers brings something different to the circle and that is what is needed to have a “complete” staff. Each one has done a good job in the fall season and into spring practice, battling for one of the top 2 spots on the staff. Jamie has improved a lot this fall transitioning into the college game and pitching at the D1 level. She learned early, what she can and cannot get away with, as well as what else is needed in the circle to be successful. Emily, is a “power pitcher” and sky’s the limit for her. She is very intense in all facets, from workouts to being in the circle. She has tremendous “upside” and can work herself into a no. 1 pitcher very quickly. She could also take a closer role, which you normally don’t see in college softball.
CATCHING Ashley Modzelewski and Stacey Conley return behind the plate in 2013. Catching is a very important position, so the “field general” needs to lead for our defense to be successful. Both Ashley and Stacey split time last year in the gear and could potentially do the same this year. We would like to see one of the two take the reins and help facilitate the pitching staff and defense. Ashley has great arm strength and good bat. She has the potential to change the game with one swing. Stacey is a good blocker and hard worker. Her work ethic will help her win that job
behind the plate. Another player that could see significant time behind the plate is freshman Lakeyn Fontenot. She has only been catching for two years, but the work that she has put in to 2

become the best catcher has been worth it. Probably our best defensive catcher, Lakeyn is very poised and confident with the mask on, believing in herself to be a D1 catcher. She works tirelessly to figure it out and puts the work in to be the best she can be. She may not be the biggest athlete behind the plate, but she doesn’t lack anything else needed to “play big”.

“Burn Your Ship”
Infield depth should not be a problem this year for us. Adding a few new faces to the dirt, they add a lot. Two returners come to mind to help solidify our infield is Katie Roux and Kim Kennedy. With both Katie and Kim they give us that upperclassman leadership that is needed on the field and within the team. Great team leaders and individuals, success is in their personal recipe. Katie will spend time at both middle positions. She is fundamentally sound, works hard and loves to play the game. Kim is a rock at first base, which will give us leadership and consistency. Also, returner Lauren Langner could potentially be a mainstay in the dirt, but could also see significant time in the grass. Local newcomers Taylor Goree and Lakeyn Fontenot are dynamic players and individuals that will be fun to watch this year and into the future. Goree could see time at third, short and second base, while Fontenot could be at third base if she isn’t behind the plate. Another newcomer is transfer Mallory Livingston who is an experienced third baseman and shortstop. Mallory is a “warrior” that brings collegiate experience to a pretty deep infield. Heather Hummel and Jessica Bowden round out the infield. Both will play a
Losing Claire Terracina to graduation, a mainstay and top player in the conference could cause a coach to panic, but with the return of Alanna Divittorio in center field, all is in good hands. Alanna has good instincts and is smooth in the grass. She also brings a big bat to the plate. Look for Divittorio to be a key component to Cowgirl success. Senior, Marissa Koetting could be another name you will hear about this season in the outfield. Learning a new position last year and doing a great job, has pushed her to become even better this year. Koetting wants to go out with a bang in her last campaign. Lauren Langner attacks the game with everything she does. She is steady in the outfield; with solid fundamentals is why she could play both outfield and infield for us this season. Transfer Tori Rich and freshman Taylor Schmidt both could be key figures in the outfield for 2013. Rich and Schmidt, both from Ca. bring experience and softball “swag” to the grass. Rich covers a lot of ground and has an accurate arm, with a consistent bat and speed at the plate makes her a force to be recognized with. Schmidt is a very confident hitter with great power for her size. When they say, “good things come in small packages”, they were talking about Taylor. She can change the course of the game with one swing of the bat. Senior, Megan Knippa and sophomore Kelsey Jolly adds depth and speed to the outfield. Both with strong and accurate arms, each could work in the mix to play. Consistency will be the key for both to be everyday players. Local product Brittany Calbert has the potential to be that one player on the bases that could cause havoc for a defense. She is very fast and aggressive, so watch her to lead the team in stolen bases. Calbert too could see significant time in the outfield with consistency and show leadership qualities.

Tommy McCleland Athletic Director
Tommy McClelland was named athletics director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008. Prior to being named Athletics Director, McClelland served at Interim Athletics Director and Assistant Athletics Director of Internal Affairs. In his short time at McNeese, McClelland has been quick out of the gate. He started the “Partner with the Pokes” program that provides a smaller, more attractive sponsorship package for local small businesses. On top of the “Partner with the Pokes” program, McClelland has raised over $2.8 million in private donations since April of 2007 and was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships over $750,000, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships. He also planned and helped implement a multi-city summer tour, the “Cowboy Round-Up Tour”. The Cowboy Round-Up Tour is a two week period in June where coaches, administrators and other department staff travel to various cities in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Fans have the opportunity to meet the coaches and administrators to talk about Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales in 2008 for the then highest total in school history to 8,008 and then topped that at 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single game attendance records in volleyball, softball, soccer and women’s basketball. McClelland is not just limited to selling tickets. He devised a plan to resurrect the “M” Club for former student-athletes. He negotiated a new syndicated radio network for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Included in that deal was the first ever radio station that was solely dedicated to broadcasting women’s basketball. McClelland also re-negotiated football’s TV replay contract from a one station deal to broadcasting games on three different stations and the internet. One of the main goals for McClelland was to improve the life of the student-athletes and increase the fans experience. The most effective way to accomplish both goals in to improve athletic facilities. In his short time as Athletics Director, McClelland has overseen the completion of:
