ContinuingTradition But RaisingThe Bar Athletics Director
Bruce Hemphill Athletic Director
Bruce Hemphill begins his second year as athletic director for McNeese after the former associate AD at the University of Wyoming and assistant to the AD at the University of North Carolina became the ninth athletics director in school history in August of 2013. “Bruce understands the role athletics plays in the larger university environment and he understands the difficulty we face with the athletic budget and the importance of increasing revenue through private sources and auxiliary means,” said McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams. The first year under Hemphill was an eventful one as McNeese’s athletic programs excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom. Academically, McNeese set a school record by having five players named as the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. The program also led all conference schools in the 2014 spring semester with 21 student-athletes compiling a perfect 4.0 grade point average. And Cowgirl softball player Alana DiVittorio became just the second player in the sport to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. Athletically, McNeese finished fifth out of the 14 SLC schools for the 2013-14 SLC Commissioner’s Cup standings and led all Louisiana schools. The Cowgirl softball team won a school record 40 games en route to its second consecutive league championship and the Cowboy football team won 10 games and qualified for its league-record 15th FCS playoff appearance. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball, all qualified for the league postseason tournament. During his first year as the department leader, he’s been very active in helping raise funds for the new Health & Human Performance Center that will also be the new home of McNeese basketball and volleyball as well as spearheading beautification projects at the athletic field house, among many other accomplishments. The Sulphur, La., native has 25 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won AllAcademic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physical education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. In 2003 he returned to North Carolina and accepted a position as athletics director at a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state. Hemphill has two sons - James, 19, a sophomore basketball player at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and Jack, 15, a sophomore in high school, and a daughter, Hayden, 18, a senior in high school. Quotes from colleagues about Bruce Hemphill: “McNeese has hired the perfect fit in Bruce Hemphill. He is from Southwest Louisiana and he will bring the community together around McNeese athletics. Bruce understands what it takes to build a successful Division I athletics program. He has exceptional people skills and he is a great leader and motivator. He is a fundraiser and he will build support for the program. Bruce is a professional and kind of person McNeese needs. He is a terrific choice!”
- Lee Moon, Director of Athletics - University of North Florida; Former Athletics Director - University of Wyoming
“McNeese hit a home run with Bruce Hemphill! A great plus for Bruce is that he is from Louisiana, played football at LSU and worked at LSU and Louisiana Tech. He knows what it takes to build a successful program and he will lead the McNeese athletics department in the right direction. I have known Bruce since 1982 and our paths have crossed several times. He has held a wide range of positions in collegiate athletics from recruiting to administrative and he knows how to get things done. Bruce understands the role that athletics plays in the overall success of the university. He is a people person and he will do a great job with fundraising and moving the McNeese athletics department forward. He is without a doubt the best choice for the McNeese athletics director!” - Carl Torbush, Head Football Coach - East Tennessee State University; Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina
“What a tremendous opportunity for Bruce. Bruce has a wealth of experience at a lot of different levels in athletics. He has great integrity and loyalty. I know he’s very excited about being the athletics director at McNeese, with his ties to South Louisiana this is a perfect fit.” - Mack Brown, Head Football Coach - Former Head Coach - University of Texas; Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina
“Bruce is an excellent choice to lead McNeese athletics. He is a ‘can do’ guy and during his time at Wyoming I was impressed with his professionalism, people skills and positive outlook. He has an effective public presence and was very engaged with fundraising. Bruce will build support for McNeese State University and McNeese athletics.” - Dr. Philip Dubois, Chancellor - University of North Carolina Charlotte

Twice she was named to the all-Southland Conference and all-Louisiana teams and was a two-time team MVP. During the 1991-92 season she averaged 21.9 points per game while leading the Southland Conference and ranked nationally. Following graduation she entered the banking field and now resides in Nacogdoches, TX.

Shante’ Perry was a two-time AllSLC pick during her four year career at McNeese. Perry scored her 1,000th point against UT-Arlington on Feb. 11, 2009 and ended her career as the school’s ninth alltime leading scorer. In her senior season, she led the Cowgirls in scoring and ranked second in the Southland Conference with 15.7 ppg. She ranked second in the SLC with 2.3 three-pointers made per game, third with an 82.6 free throw percent. Perry ranked among the nations best in points per game, three-point percent, field goal percent, three-point field goal percent and three-point field goals per game. She scored in double figures in 24 games and set a McNeese and tied a SLC record with nine three-pointers made in the Cowgirls’ 71-66 victory over Louisiana Tech (Jan. 3, 2009). In that game, she also tied a McNeese single game record for points scored with 39.

Sonny Watkins and Bridget Martin served as co-head coaches for four years (1990-94). During that time they were one of a few co-head coaches in the nation. The duo guided McNeese to three Southland Conference Tournaments and produced two All-Southland Conference players in Robin Daniels and Tangela McAlister. Both players garnered individual honors as well. Daniels was named the league’s “Freshman of the Year” in 1992 while McAlister was named the SLC “Newcomer of the Year” that same year. In 1993, McAlister was named to the Basketball Times All-America Team, only the fourth and last McNeese player to become an All-American. Watkins later served as the Universities Athletic Director from 1995-2007 while Martin went on to serve as head coach for seven more years before being named McNeese’s Associate AD for Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator in 2002, titles she still holds to date.
