Head Coach

Ashleigh Fitzgerald HEAD COACH

Ashleigh Fitzgerald, who from 2006-2008 helped coach McNeese to a Southland Conference East Division Championship and league postseason play all three seasons, was named the Cowgirls’ new volleyball head coach on March 26, 2014.

“It is both great and surprising to be coming back to McNeese after five years,” said Fitzgerald. “A lot has changed from a facilities perspective across campus since I left, but a lot has stayed the same. McNeese is still all about a sense of family and community, and I know it is a place where I will be supported personally and professionally.”

Fitzgerald has spent the last five seasons as the head coach at Drury University, a NCAA Division II school in southern Missouri, where she has compiled an 87-74 career record and led the Panthers to the only three winning seasons in the program’s 20-year history. Fitzgerald guided the program to three Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournaments and led the team to its first conference tournament win in 2011. In 2010, she led the Panthers to a school-record 22 victories. She coached numerous all-conference selections, the school’s first D-II Daktronics All-Region honoree, and an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Region team member. Her teams earned four AVCA team academic awards that recognizes teams that compile a minimum 3.30 team grade point average. Prior to her coaching stint at Drury, Fitzgerald served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at McNeese from 2006-08. During her previous stint at McNeese, Fitzgerald helped coach the Cowgirls to three conference tournament appearances while advancing to the semifinal match two times. The Cowgirls posted a 30-18 overall conference record in three seasons including a 12-4 mark and the Southland Conference Eastern Division title in 2006. The Cowgirls also finished second in the division in 2007. Fitzgerald was responsible for recruiting Priscilla Massengale, the Houston Chronicle’s 2008 Player of the Year and 2009 Louisiana Freshman of the Year. She also mentored an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American and the Southland Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year in Tiffany Baker as well as coaching six all-conference selections. The Chapin, South Carolina native was a member of the Ole Miss volleyball team for two years from 2004 to 2005 where she ranked fourth in the SEC in aces per game in 2004 and was fifth in the league in assists in 2005. Fitzgerald played her first two collegiate seasons at the United States Naval Academy and earned the Unsung Hero Award in 2001. Fitzgerald was an academic standout at Ole Miss, earning the SEC’s postgraduate scholarship for community service in 2006. She served as a volunteer coach for the Lady Rebels in the spring of 2006.

Athletics Director

Bruce Hemphill Athletic Director

Bruce Hemphill begins his second year as athletic director for McNeese after the former associate AD at the University of Wyoming and assistant to the AD at the University of North Carolina became the ninth athletics director in school history in August of 2013. “Bruce understands the role athletics plays in the larger university environment and he understands the difficulty we face with the athletic budget and the importance of increasing revenue through private sources and auxiliary means,” said McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams. The first year under Hemphill was an eventful one as McNeese’s athletic programs excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom. Academically, McNeese set a school record by having five players named as the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. The program also led all conference schools in the 2014 spring semester with 21 student-athletes compiling a perfect 4.0 grade point average. And Cowgirl softball player Alana DiVittorio became just the second player in the sport to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. Athletically, McNeese finished fifth out of the 14 SLC schools for the 2013-14 SLC Commissioner’s Cup standings and led all Louisiana schools. The Cowgirl softball team won a school record 40 games en route to its second consecutive league championship and the Cowboy football team won 10 games and qualified for its league-record 15th FCS playoff appearance. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball, all qualified for the league postseason tournament. During his first year as the department leader, he’s been very active in helping raise funds for the new Health & Human Performance Center that will also be the new home of McNeese basketball and volleyball as well as spearheading beautification projects at the athletic field house, among many other accomplishments. The Sulphur, La., native has 25 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won AllAcademic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physical education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. In 2003 he returned to North Carolina and accepted a position as athletics director at a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state. Hemphill has two sons - James, 19, a sophomore basketball player at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and Jack, 15, a sophomore in high school, and a daughter, Hayden, 18, a senior in high school.

Quotes from colleagues about Bruce Hemphill: “McNeese has hired the perfect fit in Bruce Hemphill. He is from Southwest Louisiana and he will bring the community together around McNeese athletics. Bruce understands what it takes to build a successful Division I athletics program. He has exceptional people skills and he is a great leader and motivator. He is a fundraiser and he will build support for the program. Bruce is a professional and kind of person McNeese needs. He is a terrific choice!”

- Lee Moon, Director of Athletics - University of North Florida; Former Athletics Director - University of Wyoming

“McNeese hit a home run with Bruce Hemphill! A great plus for Bruce is that he is from Louisiana, played football at LSU and worked at LSU and Louisiana Tech. He knows what it takes to build a successful program and he will lead the McNeese athletics department in the right direction. I have known Bruce since 1982 and our paths have crossed several times. He has held a wide range of positions in collegiate athletics from recruiting to administrative and he knows how to get things done. Bruce understands the role that athletics plays in the overall success of the university. He is a people person and he will do a great job with fundraising and moving the McNeese athletics department forward. He is without a doubt the best choice for the McNeese athletics director!” - Carl Torbush, Head Football Coach - East Tennessee State University; Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina

“What a tremendous opportunity for Bruce. Bruce has a wealth of experience at a lot of different levels in athletics. He has great integrity and loyalty. I know he’s very excited about being the athletics director at McNeese, with his ties to South Louisiana this is a perfect fit.” - Mack Brown, Head Football Coach - Former Head Coach - University of Texas; Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina

“Bruce is an excellent choice to lead McNeese athletics. He is a ‘can do’ guy and during his time at Wyoming I was impressed with his professionalism, people skills and positive outlook. He has an effective public presence and was very engaged with fundraising. Bruce will build support for McNeese State University and McNeese athletics.” - Dr. Philip Dubois, Chancellor - University of North Carolina Charlotte

Memorial Gym

Memorial Gym (500 est.) is home to McNeese State Volleyball and is located on the East side of campus. During the 2005 season, the Cowgirls played only one match in Memorial Gym and played the remaining 2005 and the 2006 entire home schedule at the (SPAR) Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center due to damages from Hurricane Rita. Constructed in 1949, the gym has gone through several renovations since then including a new floor, lighting and sound system and retractable bleachers. The facility played host to the 1997 Southland Conference Tournament. The McNeese Cowboy Club donated $35,000 to the volleyball program before the 2007 season for new bleachers. Prior to the 2014 season the floor received a new design.

Weights are painted in platinum and blue and there are 16 Mondo enlayed platforms for heavy weight work, one of only eight schools in the nation to have this. The weight room also includes: 16 multi-purpose racks, 80,000 pounds of weights (McNeese logo on the weights), nine 52-inch flat screen television sets, mirrors all the way around, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stationary bike and a $12,000 surround sound system donated by Scott Bailey and Bailey Audio. Southland Conference

Now in its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of existence. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed four additional members in 2013: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the Southland also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. An original Southland member from 1963-73, Abilene Christian rejoined the league as one of the most decorated athletic programs in NCAA history, and the addition of Houston Baptist, UIW and New Orleans Tom Burnett gives the Southland a regular competitive presence in the key metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio Commissioner and New Orleans. Southland cities encompass approximately 14 million people, and six of its television markets rank among the top 100 in the U.S. All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). Other notable alums from current members include Grammy Award-winning musicians Frank Ocean (New Orleans), Don Henley and Rodney Crowell (both Stephen F. Austin), and Ronnie Dunn (Abilene Christian), television personality and actress Ellen DeGeneres (New Orleans), current NFL standouts Lardarius Webb (Nicholls State), Terrence McGee (Northwestern State), and Daniel Manning (Abilene Christian), professional golfers Shawn Stefani and Chris Stroud (both Lamar) and Colin Montgomerie (HBU), award-winning filmmaker Richard Linklater (Sam Houston State), American Idol winner Kris Allen (Central Arkansas), NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Harris (Northwestern State), former NFL standouts Bobby Hebert (Northwestern State), Gary Barbaro (Nicholls State), Wilbert Montgomery (Abilene Christian) and Gary Reasons (Northwestern State), former MLB stars Darryl Hamilton (Nicholls State) and Kevin Millar (Lamar), NCAA football coach Charlie Strong (Central Arkansas), actors John Larroquette (New Orleans), Ricardo Chavira (UIW) and Jesse Borrego (UIW), and the late NFL coaching legend O.A. “Bum” Phillips (Lamar and Stephen F. Austin). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The Southland also has a proud history in volleyball with former member Texas-Arlington representing the conference numerous times in the NCAA tournament, including a run to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four in 1989. While successful on the fields and courts, the Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. The conference continues to make great strides in the classroom. During the last seven years, no other Division I conference has improved its Academic Progress Rate as well as the Southland Conference has. In fact, in 2009-10, the Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Division I leagues in men’s basketball APR. The academic progress the league has shown ultimately leads to higher graduation rates for our student-athletes. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.
