Ashleigh Fitzgerald guided McNeese to a 15-17 overall record in her first season as a Division I collegiate coach and reached a milestone in her coaching career by picking up her 100th career win against New Orleans on Oct. 30, 2014. Fitzgerald and the Cowgirls nearly missed making the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament field in her first season at the helm of the program. Fitzgerald has revamped the squad for the upcoming 2015 season that has the potential to make a run at the Southland title. Fitzgerald, who from 2006-2008 helped coach McNeese to a Southland Conference East Division Championship and league postseason play all three seasons, was named the Cowgirls’ new volleyball head coach on March 26, 2014. Fitzgerald has spent the last five seasons as the head coach at Drury University, a NCAA Division II school in southern Missouri, where she has compiled an 87-74 career record and led the Panthers to the only three winning seasons in the program’s 20-year history. Fitzgerald guided the program to three Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournaments and led the team to its first conference tournament win in 2011. In 2010, she led the Panthers to a school-record 22 victories. She coached numerous all-conference selections, the school’s first D-II Daktronics All-Region honoree, and an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Region team member. Her teams earned four AVCA team academic awards that recognizes teams that compile a minimum 3.30 team grade point average. Prior to her coaching stint at Drury, Fitzgerald served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at McNeese from 2006-08. During her previous stint at McNeese, Fitzgerald helped coach the Cowgirls to three conference tournament appearances while advancing to the semifinal match two times. The Cowgirls posted a 30-18 overall conference record in three seasons including a 12-4 mark and the Southland Conference Eastern Division title in 2006. The Cowgirls also finished second in the division in 2007. Fitzgerald was responsible for recruiting Priscilla Massengale, the Houston Chronicle’s 2008 Player of the Year and 2009 Louisiana Freshman of the Year. She also mentored an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American and the Southland Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year in Tiffany Baker as well as coaching six all-conference selections. The Chapin, South Carolina native was a member of the Ole Miss volleyball team for two years from 2004 to 2005 where she ranked fourth in the SEC in aces per game in 2004 and was fifth in the league in assists in 2005. Fitzgerald played her first two collegiate seasons at the United States Naval Academy and earned the Unsung Hero Award in 2001. Fitzgerald was an academic standout at Ole Miss, earning the SEC’s post-graduate scholarship for community service in 2006. She served as a volunteer coach for the Lady Rebels in the spring of 2006.

Memorial Gym

Memorial Gym (500 est.) is home to McNeese Volleyball and is located on the East side of campus. During the 2005 season, the Cowgirls played only one match in Memorial Gym and played the remaining 2005 and the 2006 entire home schedule at the (SPAR) Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center due to damages from Hurricane Rita. Constructed in 1949, the gym has gone through several renovations since then including a new floor, lighting and sound system and retractable bleachers. The facility played host to the 1997 Southland Conference Tournament. The McNeese Cowboy Club donated $35,000 to the volleyball program before the 2007 season for new bleachers. Prior to the 2014 season the floor received a new design.

Athletics Director

Bruce Hemphill Athletic Director

Bruce Hemphill is in his third year as athletic director for McNeese after the former associate AD at the University of Wyoming and assistant to the AD at the University of North Carolina became the ninth athletics director in school history in August of 2013. “Bruce understands the role athletics plays in the larger university environment and he understands the difficulty we face with the athletic budget and the importance of increasing revenue through private sources and auxiliary means,” said McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams. The first two years under Hemphill was an eventful one as McNeese’s athletic programs excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom. Academically, McNeese set a school record in the 2013-14 sport season by having five players named as the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. The program also led all conference schools in the 2014 spring semester with 21 student-athletes compiling a perfect 4.0 grade point average. And Cowgirl softball player Alana DiVittorio became just the second player in the sport to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. McNeese received the Southland Conference Academic Progress Award for the 2014-15 for posting the highest APR score in the league. McNeese football was the only team recognized from the Southland Conference as the recipient of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) APR Award. Athletically, McNeese finished fourth out of 13 teams in the Commisioner’s Cup Standings - the highest placing since finishing fourth in the 2002-03 season. It’s also the sixth straight year McNeese has been the highest finishing school among Louisiana SLC league teams. Ten of the school’s 16 sports programs finished fifth or higher in their respective sport standings. In the 2013-14 sports season, McNeese finished fifth out of the 14 SLC schools for the 2013-14 SLC Commissioner’s Cup standings. The Cowgirl softball team won a school record 40 games en route to its second consecutive league championship and the Cowboy football team won 10 games and qualified for its league-record 15th FCS playoff appearance. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball, all qualified for the league postseason tournament. During his two years as Director of Athletics, Hemphill worked with the McNeese administration to gain the support of legislation, boosters and private donors for the new $44 million Health and Human Performance Complex that will also become the home for McNeese men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The Sulphur, La., native has 26 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won All-Academic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physical education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. In 2003 he returned to North Carolina and accepted a position as athletics director at a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state. Hemphill has two sons - James, 20, a junior basketball player at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and Jack, 16, a junior in high school; and a daughter, Hayden, 19, a freshman at SMU and is a member of the school’s Crew (rowing) team. perfect fit.”

Sports Imports/AVCA PLAYER OF THE WEEK Week of Sept. 27, 2004 Nicole James (left) set a school and Southland Conference match record with 44 kills against Texas-Arlington in 2004. The 44 kills is the sixth best single-match output for a four-game match in NCAA history since the introduction of the all-rally scoring system began in 2001. For this, she was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National “Player of the Week”. She is the first McNeese player and the second player from a Southland Conference University to receive this honor.
