SCOOTER SAVOIE HEAD COACH 10th Season

2007 SLC "Coach of the Year" 2006 Louisiana "Coach of the Year" Scooter Savoie enters his 10th season as head coach of the Cowgirls. Savoie brings the vision, motivation, hard work and respect a program needs to be successful. He guided McNeese to the program’s first regular season title in 2007 and won the program’s first Southland Conference Tournament Championship in 2006, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Success is not something new to Savoie and McNeese soccer. His Cowgirls have consistently attracted some of the top talent in the Southland Conference. Benefiting from developing young and talented players under his direction, McNeese has qualified for eight Southland Conference Tournaments under his direction. Savoie was named the program's first coach in 1996. His teams improved each season during his tenure through 1999. McNeese posted an overall winning record in conference play during this time. He guided the program to three consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearances; leading his 1999 team to a second place finish in the league's regular season. Savoie returned to McNeese in 2003 to bring notoriety back to the program. Since then, McNeese has returned to the Southland Conference Tournament in five of the last six seasons and has played in the championship game the last three years. Savoie was recognized for his efforts by being named the 2007 Southland Conference Coach of the Year and 2006 Louisiana Coach of the Year. Savoie is the program’s winningest coach with 69 career victories. But the accolades for success do not stop here. Savoie has coached 45 All-Conference performers including the 2008 (Kamryn Koch) and 1999 (Joy Keating) SLC Players of the Year. Koch is also a two-time SLC Student-Athlete of the Year (2007, 2008), twotime Louisiana Player of the Year (2007, 2008) and was named McNeese State's "Athlete of the Year" for the 2008-09 season. Savoie continues to coached Alana Clark, the 2007 Louisiana Freshman of the Year. Nineteen players have made the SLC All-Tournament Team. The program led the league with five All-Tournament selections in 2006 and Kamryn Koch garnered Tournament MVP honors that year. McNeese has had 15 AllLouisiana selections with Savoie at the helm. Program success is not just limited to the soccer field. McNeese Soccer led the Southland Conference in 2006 with five student-athletes selected to the All-Academic Team. The team annually ranks amongst the highest of all team sports at McNeese for academic performance and consistently maintains a GPA above 3.0. ESPN The Magazine has placed three soccer athletes on the District VI Academic All-American Team (Brenna Abbitt, Justeen Lords, Kamryn Koch). Several of his players have earned Southland Conference Academic Honors and many have been named to McNeese’s President's List. In 2008, Koch was named to the NSCAA scholar All-America Team, the first McNeese soccer player to receive the honor. Savoie is well respected in the university and soccer communities. He is proud to serve both in various capacities. He currently serves as the Chair of Southland Conference Women's Soccer Coaches. They have two daughters, Jolie Aunjelle and Gracie Ann.

Allison Holladay

Assistant Coach - Goalkeepers 7th Season Allison Holladay enters her seventh season as a Cowgirl assistant who possesses a wealth of experience with nine years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level. She has served in the capacity of assistant coach carrying the titles of goalkeeper coach and recruiting coordinator since 2003. In her time at McNeese State, she has helped guide two goalkeepers to the SLC All-Conference First Team, and one to the SLC All-Tournament First Team. The 2007 season saw the best goalkeeping results in the history of the program while posting 10 shutouts and a 0.96 goals against average using both goalkeepers on the roster. Holladay approaches goalkeeping training with the individual needs of the keeper in mind. She enjoys working closely with the players in order to enhance the assets each keeper can bring to the team. Recognizing that not all goalkeepers are the same, she designs her training sessions to aim towards specific techniques and execution. Her sessions include drills with a multiple of components in order for each goalkeeper to benefit at all times. Holladay believes daily goalkeeper training is a necessity for success. "This time for keepers to work on their own is invaluable to their development." She also works closely with Coach Savoie to match the keeper sessions to the team training theme. This allows the goalkeepers to transfer their training into a live environment with their teammates on a daily bases. Holladay also has seen success as a recruiting coordinator. Our "player-first" philosophy at McNeese State has been instrumental in recruiting the student-athletes that won the 2007 regular season SLC title and the 2006 Southland Conference Tournament Championship while making the program's first NCAA National Tournament Appearance. Her recruiting efforts have paid off by adding to the program a Mexico National full team player, U-15 USA National Team Player, and the New Mexico Player of the Year. Holladay strives to recruit players that are the perfect "fit" for the program. She aims to recruit players whose personalities as well as playing styles will mesh with the team and the coaching staff. After serving as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana University for three seasons, Holladay joined Coach Savoie and the Cowgirl Family. She concluded her playing career in 1999 as the most decorated player in the history of Southeastern soccer, helping the Lady Lions to two Southland Conference regular season titles (1999, 2002) and a Southland Conference Tournament title (1998). Holladay began her career at LSU in 1995 and started in the majority of games, including the SEC Tournament. After a red shirt season in 1996, she transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1997. Throughout her SLU career, she logged 5,401 minutes played, missing just 20 minutes of action in 59 career games with a 0.71 goals against average, a school record that still stands today. She is one of three Lady Lions to have been named All-Southland Conference three times (1997, 1998, 1999). She was also named to the Southland Conference Tournament Team twice (1998, 1999). Perhaps her greatest honor was becoming the first soccer player inducted into the Southeastern Louisiana University Hall of Fame in the Fall of 2004.

Kyra McDonough Assistant Coach First Season

Kyra McDonough is the newest member of the coaching staff as she enters her first year as an assistant coach after playing three years for the Cowgirls. She was sidelined for the 2006 season due to an injury. McDonough played in 43 career games, scoring her only career goal, the game winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin in 2007. She attempted 21 career shots and was credited with four assists. She attempted a season high 12 shots and dished out three assists during the 2007 season. She was a member of the 2007 Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll as well as the President's Honor Roll. She is also an assistant coach for the Barbe High boys soccer team, where she is in her third season. A native of Highland Village, Texas, McDonough attended Marcus High where she was a member of two district championship teams and the 2005 state championship team. While at Marcus, she earned all-district honors twice and was named the the freshmen all-district team.

COWGIRLS TAKE ON A NEW LOOK IN 2009

McNeese State's roster is loaded with young and talented athletes who will look to continue the Cowgirls' winning tradition. The Cowgirls have 13 letterwinners returning, three are seniors (Erica Shepard, Lauren Slater, Erin Leighton), three juniors and seven sophomores. Ten newcomers make up the 2009 signing class which includes redshirt freshmen transfers Sarah Lowden (Mississippi State) and Hannah Hopson (Troy University) along with eight true freshmen. "We have established a winning program that is based on the drive to excel on the field and in the classroom. We have proven to be Southland Conference leaders in both areas and the newcomers will continue that tradition," said head coach Scooter Savoie. The top returnees include preseason all-SLC picks, junior midfielder Alana Clark and senior defender Erin Leighton. Both players were picked as second team selections. Clark was second on the team last year with 46 shots, tied for a team high five assists and tied for seventh in the Southland Conference in both categories. Leighton played in 19 games in the backfield and spent 1,598 minutes on the field as a defender. Other letterwinners returning are seniors Erica Shepard and Lauren Slater, juniors Lauren LaLanne and Macie Jones, sophomores Megan Manus, Jana Barrow, Rachel Key, Jordan Picou, Audrey LaLanne and Ashley Rudd. "Our expectation is to build upon the success we have had over the past three years that has established McNeese Soccer as one of the top teams in the Southland Conference. The Cowgirls open the 2009 season with three consecutive road games beginning with an Aug. 21 game at UL-Lafayette followed by a trip to Washington to face Gonzaga Aug. 28 and Eastern Washington Aug. 29. The home opener is slated for Sept. 4 against Baylor, the first of three straight home games. The Cowgirls will also host Alcorn State, Houston Baptist andLSUShreveport in non-conference action. Other non-conference road games are at Houston, UL-Monroe, Grambling and Southern. McNeese opens Southland Conference play by hosting Sam Houston State (Oct. 2). The remaining home SLC schedule has Stephen F. Austin, Central Arkansas, Northwestern State and Lamar coming to Lake Charles. McNeese will play SLC road games at UTSA, preseason favorite Texas State, Southeastern La. and will conclude the regular season on the road at Nicholls. The Southland Conference Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 5-8 in Natchitoches, La., the top six teams will make up the tournament field.

Kamryn Koch earned her second straight Southland Conference Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year award and was named to the NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-South Region team as a second team selection.

McNeese State University

In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the official name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certified for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's first ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fiscal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

STATE OF LOUISIANA

The state of Louisiana is conveniently organized into five distinct regions (Greater New Orleans, Cajun Country, Plantation Country, Crossroads, Sportsman's Paradise, each offering a different Nickname: The Pelican State experience. It’s part of the cultural geography that makes this a great Admitted to Union: April 30, 1812 place to live. State Colors: Gold, White, Blue Louisiana is one of the nation's largest producers of cotton, State Bird: Brown Pelican sugarcane, rice, sweet potatoes and pecans. State Dog: Catahoula Leopard The state is also a major producer of soybeans and corn. The State Tree: Bald Cypress State Flower: Magnolia biggest land-based industry in the state is forestry, with an economic impact from paper-making and wood products greater than all other crops combined. Poultry is the largest livestock industry, followed by dairy and beef cattle. Louisiana is also the nation's largest producer of alligator hides and crawfish. Louisiana's approximately 3,650 manufacturing units employ some 190,000 wage and salary workers whose annual earnings are $1.9 billion. The state annually produces nearly five billion dollars worth of products, including petroleum, chemicals, plastics, clothing, wood products, industrial alcohol, wallboard, cement, seafood, glass, drugs and many more. Louisiana has a semi-tropical climate. Variations in daily temperature are determined by distances from the Gulf of Mexico and, to a lesser degree, by differences in elevation. The average annual temperature for the state as a whole is 67.4. January is the coldest month (average 50.7), and July and August the warmest (average 82). Snow is rare in southern Louisiana, but occasionally falls are recorded in the northern parts of the state. Average annual rainfall is 55.45 inches.

LAKE CHARLES

The first people to settle the lake were Mr. and Mrs. LeBleu of Bordeaux, France. They arrived in 1781 and secured their home six miles east of the present site of Lake Charles, living in peaceful coexistence with several tribes of Indians. This area originally settled by the LeBleu's is now known as LeBleu Settlement. Other pioneers quickly ventured to Lake Charles. Among them was Charles Sallier who married LeBleu's daughter, Catherine. The Sallier's built their home on the lake, in the area now known as Lake Charles. After Charles Sallier built his home in this area, the lake became known as Charlie's Lake. By 1860 this area was being called "Charleston" or "Charles Town." Settlers at the turn of the century acquired property from the Indians or they homesteaded the Rio Hondo lands. The Rio Hondo which flowed through Lake Charles was later called Quelqueshue, an Indian term meaning "Crying Eagle" and still later Calcasieu. Little is known of these early residents except that they were a mixture of English, French, Spanish and Dutch. On March 7, 1861, Lake Charles was incorporated as the town of Charleston, Louisiana. The growth of the city was fairly slow until Captain Daniel Goos came in 1855. He established a lumber mill and schooner dock, now Goosport, and promoted a profitable trade with Texas and Mexican ports by sending his schooner down-river into the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the wood which built the city came from Goos' mill. Until the arrival of Goos, Jacob Ryan dominated the lumber industry. Ryan convinced the state government to move the parish seat to Lake Charles. Later that year, Ryan and Samuel Kirby transferred the parish courthouse and jail to Lake Charles, at that time called Charleston. Six years after the city was incorporated, dissatisfaction over the name Charleston arose. On March 16, 1867, Charleston, Louisiana, was incorporated into the town of Lake Charles.

Baton Rouge: 129.4 miles It is no mystery why Lake Charles Dallas: 358.8 miles and Southwest Louisiana are referred to Houston: 142.8 miles as the "Festival Capital of Louisiana." New Orleans: 205.2 miles With more than 75 fairs, festivals and special events each year, our area has celebrations down to an art form - complete with food, music, lights and laughter. Contraband Days is one of Louisiana’s largest festivals and the City of Lake Charles' oldest festival. Contraband Days is a 12-day festival/carnival extravaganza filled with savory cajun food, family fun and festivities, and is attended by over 200,000 people annually. Each year during the first two weeks in May the city officially celebrates the legend of the pirate Jean Lafitte with its Contraband Days celebration. History tells us that Lafitte and his band of pirates once sailed the area's waterways and are said to have buried Lafitte's Contraband treasure somewhere in the vicinity of the lake. The festivities kick off every year with a pirate ship bombardment to "take control of the city" at the seawall of the Lake Charles Civic Center. A gang of rowdy and unruly buccaneers led by Jean Lafitte himself overruns the blazing cannons of the local militia, raises their "Jolly Roger" flag, captures the Mayor and forces him - with swords drawn - to walk the plank into the swirling waters of the lake.

Tommy McClelland is the seventh athletic director at McNeese State's 69 year history. He officially moved up from an interim position to full-time in the Spring of 2008 and on the occasion of his hire, McNeese President Dr. Robert Hebert said “Tommy is energetic, enthusiastic and a hard worker. We believe that he is the person to lead our athletics department as athletics director.” The Basile native and Northwestern State graduate, was quick out of the box. He formulated and drove home a two week travel plan that brought McNeese athletics to communities in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. And, he put together a "Partner with the Pokes" program for businesses. In the short time he has served as the athletic director, more than $2.5 million in renovation and construction has been applied to the facilities with the turfing of Cowboy Stadium field and the completion of the Hodges Street field house. . The addition of seating and team area improvements at the soccer field, covered seating behind home plate at the softball field along with the renovation of the baseball facilitiesfield, stands, dressing room, fieldhouse was also completed. Following the 2009 football season, the construction of a new $8 million Jack Doland fieldhouse will get underway. The department also conducted the most successful football season ticket campaign in school history in 2008, selling more than 8,000 season tickets. In the summer of 2008, McClelland was named as one of Southwest Louisiana's "Top 10 under 40" business leaders by the local magazine, the Times of Lake Charles. A native of Basile, McClelland is a graduate of Northwestern State where he was a football (H-back and deep snapper) and track (javelin) letterwinner. In high school at Basile High he earned all-state football honors and was the district's defensive MVP his senior year. Prior to being named McNeese athletic director, he served the - 22 -

university as coordinator of athletic events, sales and marketing. McClelland, who holds both a bachelor and master degree from Northwestern State, was also a graduate assistant in the athletics department at Northwestern State and worked at the Southland Conference office, assisting with championship events and securing corporate sponsorships.

McNeese State University Athletics Department It's an exciting time to be part of McNeese State Athletics. A new administration has brought a fresh idea while being committed to maintaining a winning tradition of McNeese athletics. New facilities and facility upgrades are in progress with more being planned. Cowboy and Cowgirl athletic teams have always been well supported by the community, but now more than ever there is electricity in the air and things only look to get better. In 2007 two teams (soccer, football) won Southland Conference Championships with soccer going undefeated at home and football going undefeated during the regular season. Volleyball lost only one match at home that season while Track and Field saw one of its athletes win the NCAA Indoor Pole Vault National title. In 2008, the soccer team posted an undefeated regular season home record and played in the SLC Tournament Championship game for the third straight year. Kamryn Koch was named the Southland Conference and Louisiana's Player of the Year as well as McNeese's Athlete of the Year. The women's basketball team, under the direction of head coach Brooks Donald Williams returned to the Southland Conference Tournament for the second straight year. The softball team under first year head coach Natalie Poole finished second in the league race and finished second at the Southland Conference Tournament. The Cowboys and Cowgirls excelled in the classroom as well, posting a conference best 70 student-athletes to the Commissioner's Honor Roll in the Fall of 2008.

McNeese State's Dowell "Doc" Fontenot Sports Medicine Center is an ultra-modern facility and one of the most finest in the South. It is named after longtime McNeese athletic trainer Dowell Fontenot who was also a national champion boxer during his undergraduate days at the university and is a member of the McNeese Hall of Fame. The center is located South of the McNeese athletic fieldhouse. Funds for the 6,200 square foot medical center were obtained from the state, private donations and the McNeese State PetroChem Athletic Association.

Zeb Hawkins and Chris Smith serve as McNeese State's strength and conditioning coaches. Hawkins is in his fifth season as head coach and Smith is in his third season as assistant. Both coaches are graduates of Northwestern State. The facility is named in honor of Charles Kuehn, McNeese State's first All-American. The weight room is located in the fieldhouse at the Jack Doland Athletic Complex. It has 2,000 square feet of workout space and 15,200 pounds of weights. There is 13,200 pounds of free weights and 2,000 pounds of dumbells along with 30 workout stations- eight Olympic lifting platforms, eight squat racks, eight bench press stations, two leg presses, two leg curls and two lat pull downs- all of the machines by Body Masters.

FACILITIES

The Hodges Street Fieldhouse opened its doors on June 18, 2008 and serves home to Cowgirl soccer and softball. The 5,400 square foot facility is located on the South side of the softball field and consist of eight offices three for soccer coaches, three for softball coaches, one administrative assistant and a workroom. The facility is also equipped with two locker rooms with showers and restrooms. The soccer locker room is located on the south side. The facility is also equipped with a training area and laundry room that is shared by both programs. The lobby area of the field house is complete with an inviting waiting area, complete with a glass trophy case. One of the features of the facility is the stateof-the-art conference room and players lounge. In this room student-athletes will have the opportunity to complete study hours on one of the computers or relax with teammates as they watch the flat screen television. The conference room will also be used for press conferences for softball and women’s soccer. McNeese State plays all its home games at Cowgirl Field located between Common and Hodges Street one block away from campus. Cowgirl Field has seen a dramatic face lift over the years. Prior to the 2006 season, a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed on the North end of the field. The new scoreboard allows for more up-to-date information for fans in attendance. Prior to the 2008 season, new bleachers were installed that will allow fans a more inviting and comforting way to watch Cowgirl soccer. With the new bleachers came a concrete walkway that comes with a side of Cowgirl attitude. In the walkway, fans will notice real horse shoes that help identify the strength of the Cowgirl soccer team. At the end of the 2008 season, concrrete covered team areas were built.
