Cowboys win NAIA National Championship

The Cowboys completed a 33-3 run on the season by beating Texas Southern in the finals of the NAIA tournament. Bill Reigel, who would go on to serve as a coach for the Cowboys later, was the team’s leading scorer, pumping in a school record 33.9 points per game...he would also be named the outstanding player in the NAIA tournament and earn all-American honors

Ed Green was the team captain of this squad that posted a 20-5 record and won what was then a school record 19 straight ball games....Kent Andrews was also featured on the team and he led the nation in free throw shooting

The Cowboys won their first Southland Conference title this year with E. W. Foy as the head coach. Team leaders were Henry Ray who was named the league’s player of the year, Edmond Lawrence and a freshman by the name of John Rudd

1989 Southland Conference tournament champions and NCAA participants The Cowboys won the SLC tournament title and then pushed Illinois to the limit in a first round NCAA 77-71 loss. Michael Cutright and Anthony Pullard led that team, Cutright scoring 51 points in one game.

2002

In Joe Dumars’ final year the Cowboys went 18-10 and they packed the Lake Charles Civic Center most of the year. One particular game was a sellout when Dumars and the Cowboys went head to head with Karl Malone and Louisiana Tech. A bevy of NBA scouts and GMs were on hand also.

2001 Southland Conference champions and NIT Ron Everhart led the Cowboys to the SLC title and into the NIT tournament in this game. Demond Mallet was the ringleader and he was named the league’s player of the year after claiming the scoring title. Also on that team was Tierre Brown who went on to play in the NBA.

WEIGHT
ROOM

The new Charles Kuehn Weight Room at the Jack Doland Field House was outfitted by Life Fitness Company and Hammer Strength Company who made the 8,000 square foot room a showcase weight facility. Weights are painted in platinum and blue and there are 16 Mondo enlayed platforms for heavy weight work, one of only eight schools in the nation to have this. The weight room also includes: 16 multipurpose racks, 80,000 pounds of weights (McNeese logo on the weights), nine 52 inch flat screen television sets, mirrors all the way around, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stationary bike and a $12,000 surround sound system donated by Scott Bailey and Bailey Audio. A 12 foot McNeese logo sets off the room from the center floor. The facility is named in honor of McNeese State’s first football all-American who is pictured below. Zeb Hawkins (pictured above left) is in his seventh season as the university’s strength and conditioning coach. Alan Bryant (pictured above right) is the assistant strength coach and is in his first year.

JACK

DOLAND
FIELD
HOUSE The new Jack Doland athletic field house opened during the past summer. This is a two story $8 million facility with new locker rooms, weight rooms, meeting rooms and offices as well as seated area for football games. The building encompasses 32,000 square feet.

Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana McNeese State University is located in Lake Charles, LA, a city with a romatic past and a promising future. Situated in Southwest Louisiana and only 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, the area’s scenic beauty and abundant natural resources - with waterways playing a predominate role - first lured settlers. Lake Charles was once a haven for pirates like Jean Lafitte who hid contraband along the labyrinth of backwater and bayous. The city’s beginning can be traced to the 1790s when the first French settlers came to carve homesteads out of the dense pine forests. Barthlemy LeBleu established the first home six miles east of Lake Charles (now known as LeBleu settlement). Charles Sallier married LeBleu’s daughter and in 1803 built the first log cabin on the shell beach of Lake Charles. The surrounding area was named after the Indian Chief “Crying Eagle” which in French became Calcasieu, that name today designating the river that runs on the edge of the city and up the middle of the parish. After the Civil War, Lake Charles became a lumber town with a healthy schooner trade, swamped with orders for lumber to help rebuild the war torn South. When lumber began to wane, the city opened a deep water port in 1923, paving the way for industrial development. Today this link to the Gulf accomodates up to 13 ships at a time. Lake Charles is a city of 80,000 diverse people but the influence of the French Acadians is seen in local cusine, language and customs. In many of the small towns and bayous near Lake Charles, Cajun Fench is still spoken. The city is a center for international commerce with its port, abundant oil and gas resources, a sprawling petro-chemical complex and an aviation facility. It has also become a favorite vacation port with riverboat casinos bordering its waters. The city is set in the midst of a sportsman paradise - fishing (saltwater and fresh), hunting (duck, geese, deer, squirrel, rabbit, turkey), shrimping and crabbing are staples. 60 /
