Press Area The Cowgirl Field press area is for working members of the media only. The press area is located in between the team benches and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scorers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator. Admission to the press area is by credential only. Post Game Interviews Coach and player interviews will be conducted on the field following the game.

Academi c Exce l l ance McNeese in the Classroom The Cowgirls soccer team usually produces one of the highest team GPAs among athletics at McNeese, and several of the players are usually named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s List as well as the McNeese President’s List. Last season 21 Cowgirls were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. McNeese Soccer has been represented on the Capital One District 6 Academic All-America team with four players named to the team. The McNeese athletic academic center, located in the newly constructed and remodeled Jack Doland Fieldhouse, is a state of the art facility that furnishes 18 Macintosh desktop computers as well as ample space for athletes to do their class work and studies.

The new Hodges Street Fieldhouse opened its doors on June 18, 2008 and will serve as home to Cowgirl soccer and softball. The 5,400 square foot facility is located on the South side of the softball field and consist of eight offices for three (3) soccer coaches, three (3) softball coaches, one administrative assistant and a workroom.
The lobby area of the field house is complete with a inviting waiting area, complete with a glass trophy case to display distinguished awards. One of the most amazing features of the facility is the state-of-the-art conference room and players lounge. In this room student-athletes will have the opportunity to complete study hours on one of the computers or relax with teammates as they watch the flat screen television.
The new facility is also equipped with two locker rooms with showers and restrooms. The Cowgirl softball locker room is on the north side of the building while the Cowgirl Soccer locker room is on the southside. The facility is also equipped with a training room and laundry room that is shared by both programs.

Ath leti c Faci liti es Cowgirl Field McNeese State plays all its home games at Cowgirl Field located between Common and Hodges Street one block north of campus. Cowgirl Field has seen a dramatic face lift over the years. Prior to the 2006 season, a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed on the south end of the field. The new scoreboard allows for more up-to-date information for fans in attendance. Prior to the 2008 season, new bleachers were installed that allows fans a more inviting and comforting way to watch Cowgirl soccer. With the new bleachers came a concrete walkway that comes with a side of Cowgirl attitude. In the walkway, fans will notice horseshoes that help identify the strength of the Cowgirl soccer team. At the end of the 2008 season, concrete covered team areas were built as well as lights being installed in 2009 to provide a night game experience on Friday’s when the Cowgirls play at home. In the fall of 2012, on site access to ethernet and wi-fi became available to the working media. Cowgirl field, Ward 3 recreational complex and McNeese State University have hosted the Southland Conference soccer tournaments in 2008, 2012 and 2013.

Dowell Fontenot Sports Medicine Center
McNeese State’s Dowell “Doc” Fontenot Sports Medicine Center is an ultra-modern facility and one of the finest in the South. It is named after longtime McNeese athletic trainer Dowell Fontenot (pictured left) who was also a national champion boxer during his undergraduate days at the university and who is a member of the McNeese Hall of Fame. The center is located just south of the McNeese athletic fieldhouse. Funds for the 6,200 square foot medical center were obtained from the state, from private donations and from the McNeese PetroChem Athletic Association.

Charles Keuhn Weight Room
The Charles Kuehn Weight Room at the Jack Doland Field House was outfitted by Life Fitness Company and Hammer Strength Company who made the 8,000 square foot room a showcase weight facility. Weights are painted in platinum and blue and there are 16 Mondo enlayed platforms for heavy weight work, one of only eight schools in the nation to have this. The weight room also includes: 16 multi-purpose racks, 80,000 pounds of weights (McNeese logo on the weights), nine 52-inch flat screen television sets, mirrors all the way around, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stationary bike and a $12,000 surround sound system donated by Scott Bailey and Bailey Audio. A 12-foot McNeese logo sets off the room from the center floor. The facility is named in honor of McNeese State’s first football all-American who is pictured above.

McNeese State President Dr. Philip C. Williams and Athletic Director Bruce Hemphill with the 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees: football’s Lonnie Collins; soccer’s Kamryn Koch; baseball’s Charlie Phillips; former McNeese track and field coach Wayne Hanson; football’s Doug Fruge and basketball’s Demond Mallett. The McNeese State Hall of Fame was founded in 1980 by retired sports information director Louis Bonnette. The Hall recognizes those who have distinguished themselves in athletics at the university. Membership in the Hall now numbers 130. Bonnette has served as chairman of the Hall of Fame committee since its inception. The committee also includes Matthew Bonnette, Johnny Suydam, Ron Hayes, Pam Lafosse, Dr. Daryl Burckel, Kenneth Sweeney, Bobby Dower, Keri Ange Gilroy and Hubert Boales. A new home for the Hall of Fame is set in the new Jack Doland athletic fieldhouse.

SCOOTER SAVOIE Head Coach • 16th Season McNeese State (1992) 2007 SLC “COACH OF THE YEAR” 2006 LOUISIANA “COACH OF THE YEAR”
Consistency has been an essential tool to the overall success of the McNeese soccer program, and in \ seasons at the helm, head coach Scooter Savoie continues to be a driving force in the success behind the Cowgirls. Since 1996, Savoie has amassed 103 total victories and is the only McNeese soccer coach to reach 50 and 100 wins. He recently picked up his 100th career collegiate victory as a coach with a 1-0 triumph over Louisiana-Monroe in 2013. Among the many highlights of Savoie’s career took place during the 2013 season as the Cowgirls finished with a 0-0 draw with No. 7 Baylor in Waco. Savoie’s Cowgirls survived a 32-shot attack to break a 13-match home winning streak held by the offensive savvy Lady Bears. McNeese goalkeeper Lauren Sestak’s 17 saves helped the sophomore gain national attention and was even honored as National Player of the Week by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Savoie was named the program’s first coach in 1996. His teams improved each season during his tenure through 1999. McNeese posted an overall winning record in conference play during that time. He guided the program to three consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearances, leading his 1999 team to a second place finish in the league’s regular season. Savoie has left his mark on the Cowgirl program when he guided McNeese to its first Southland Conference regular season title in 2007 and first SLC tournament title in 2006, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Savoie has guided the Cowgirl program to 10 league tournaments and three championship games. For his efforts, Savoie was chosen as the Louisiana Coach of the Year in 2006 and was also awarded the Southland Conference Coach of the Year award in 2007. He has mentored 59 all-conference student athletes as well as two Southland Conference Player of the Year recipients during his tenure at McNeese including the 2008 (Kamryn Koch) and 1999 (Joy Keating)

SLC “Players of the Year”. Koch is also a two-time SLC Student-Athlete of the Year (2007, 2008), two-time Louisiana “Player of the Year” (2007, 2008) and McNeese State’s “Athlete of the Year” for the 2008-09 season. Savoie has coached three Louisiana “Freshman of the Year” honorees Alana Clark (2007), Johna Germany (2010) and Sarah LaLanne (2011). Nineteen players have made the SLC All-Tournament Team during Savoie’s tenure. The program led the league with five All-Tournament selections in 2006 and Koch garnered Tournament MVP honors that year. McNeese has had 17 All-Louisiana selections with Savoie at the helm. Program success is not just limited to the soccer field. McNeese Soccer led the Southland Conference in 2006 with five student-athletes selected to the All-Academic Team. The team annually ranks amongst the highest of all team sports at McNeese for academic performance and consistently maintains a GPA above 3.0. Four soccer athletes have been named to the District VI Capital One Academic All-American Team (Brenna Abbitt, Justeen Lords, Kamryn Koch, Alana Clark). Several of his players have earned Southland Conference Academic Honors and many have been named to McNeese’s President’s List. In 2008, Koch was named to the NSCAA scholar All-America Team, the only McNeese soccer player to receive the honor. Savoie is well respected in the university and soccer communities. He is proud to serve both in various capacities. He is in his seventh year as the Chair of Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Coaches. He was a member of the McNeese Committee on Graduation Rates for Black Student Athletes and was a member of the NCAA Certification Peer Review Team, Safety and Wellness Committee. He is an active member of the NSCAA National Ranking Committee. He has also served on the coaching staff of the Louisiana Olympic and the Arizona Olympic Development Programs. Savoie earned his B.S. Degree from McNeese in 1992 and Master in Education from Texas A&M University in 1997. He is happily married to the former Stephanie Byrge of Tucson, Arizona. They have two daughters, Jolie Aunjelle and Gracie Ann.

DREW FITZGERALD Assistant Coach • First Season (Fifth Overall) Texas A&M (2001)
McNeese women’s soccer head coach Scooter Savoie announced on Friday the hiring of Drew Fitzgerald as the Cowgirls’ new associate head coach. Fitzgerald returns to McNeese after four seasons as an assistant at Missouri State University. Fitzgerald is no stranger to the “Cowgirl Way” having spent four years (2005-2008) as an assistant coach under current head coach Scooter Savoie. During his previous tenure, Fitzgerald helped McNeese to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006 and a Southland Conference Championship in 2007. He also aided the team in reaching the Southland Conference Tournament finals in 2008. Along with day-to-day operations, he will also handle recruiting, team travel and leadership development. “We are excited and proud to have Drew return to our staff,” said Savoie. “He has been a part of soccer success here at McNeese, as well as Missouri State and Texas A&M. He has a broad understanding of what it takes to make a successful program work. His skills and experience will be invaluable to McNeese.” In four seasons at Missouri State, Fitzgerald helped lead the Bears to multiple Missouri Valley Conference tournament appearances as well as develop the program’s first professional draftee, Nia Williams, who was selected by FC Kansas City in the fourth round of the 2012 NWSL draft.
Koch became the all-time leading scorer as well as being named 2008 Louisiana and Southland Conference Player of the Year. She was also recognized as an NSCAA/Adidas Scholar Team member. He also served as the Barbe High School boy’s soccer team head coach in 2007 and 2008. Fitzgerald was the head coach of the Texas A&M men’s club soccer team before landing at McNeese. As head coach of A&M’s club team from 2004 until 2005, he led them to the NIRSA National Championship and an undefeated season in his first year. His coaching career began as the head coach for the Allen Academy boy’s soccer squad where he helped lead his team to a TAPPS Class 2 State Championship. Fitzgerald earned a B.S. in Journalism (2001) and an M.S. in Sport Management (2005) from Texas A&M. He also received his NSCAA National Diploma, Goalkeeper I & II diploma and the USSF National “D” License. Drew’s wife, Ashleigh, was named the head volleyball coach at McNeese in March of 2014.
In his first season with the Bears, he helped the program to a 12-52 overall record and a second-place finish and a MVC Tournament finals appearance. Along the way, he assisted for a team that went unbeaten in 11-straight matches, had a seven-match win streak and won four-straight 1-0 shutouts, all firsts in team history. At McNeese, Fitzgerald played a vital role in the success of the Cowgirl program and even helped develop the program’s first McNeese Hall of Famer, Kamryn Koch.

KARA BLOSSER Assistant Coach • First Season West Virginia (2013)
Former Big 12 All-Newcomer and ACC All-Freshman honoree Kara Blosser has joined the McNeese women’s soccer team as an assistant for the 2014 season. Blosser comes to McNeese after a standout career at West Virginia and North Carolina State where she was a regular starter for both squads. Her contributions helped West Virginia to a 279-7 overall record during her two seasons with the Mountaineers along with back-to-back Big 12 regular season championships and a tournament title in 2013. After an early ACL injury sidelined her at the beginning of her senior year, Blosser continued to be a driving force behind the WVU soccer team’s success. Her experience and coaching helped the Mountaineers reach a 16-4-3 record and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. During that time, Blosser was named to the Big 12 All-Academic team. In her first season as a member of the WVU squad, Blosser helped her squad transition into a new conference as the Mountaineers began their first season of competition in the Big 12. Her efforts on the field helped guide WVU to a No. 8 ranking in the national soccer polls, an undefeated conference record and a regular season championship. The Mountaineers also made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She was named Big 12 All-Newcomer as well as first-team All-Academic after starting 18 of 19 contests where she scored three goals, including two game-winners.
Blosser achieved All-ACC second team and all-academic team honors after having scored three goals and recorded an assist for North Carolina State women’s soccer team. She played and started all 19 games as a sophomore and was rated as one of the top-100 upperclassman in women’s college soccer by TopDrawerSoccer. com In her first collegiate season as a member of the Wolfpack, Blosser made an impact on the pitch. She started and played in all 20 games and became the first NC State freshman in 20 years to score 20 points on nine goals in a single season. She also attempted a team best 64 shots, which also ranked in the top 10 in the ACC. Blosser was named to the All-Freshman and All-Academic team. In addition to her outstanding performance on the field, Blosser has also gained coaching experience by leading in summer camps for both West Virginia and North Carolina State. From 2007-2009 she assisted the U16 girls team for the FASA soccer league and also led small group sessions for the FASA summer camps. A native of Spotsylvania, Virginia, Blosser graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia with a degree in both criminology and psychology.
After two seasons with the Wolfpack, Blosser transferred to West Virginia, and redshirted in her first season with the squad. During that time, she helped prepare the Mountaineers to make a deep postseason run as they captured the Big East regular season and tournament championship as well as making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Dr. Philip C. Williams University President
Dr. Williams earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of North Carolina, graduating with honors in history. He earned his law degree at the Columbia University School of Law in New York City. During the course of his legal profession, he practiced corporate law and served as administrative vice president and counsel for Sea World, Inc. During the 1980’s he and his wife Sandra were active writers, publishing a series of children’s mysteries, adult mysteries, and non-fiction works. In 1994, Dr. Williams returned to Chapel Hill to earn his M.P.H. and Ph.D. degrees in Health Policy and Administration. He served for one year as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, then accepted a faculty position at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina, where he taught health law and management courses in the College of Business and was appointed to serve as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. He joined the staff of Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 2003 as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, and in 2006 he became President of the University of Montevallo in Alabama. In the spring of 2010 he was selected to serve as the 6th President of McNeese State University. Since his arrival at McNeese, he has presided over the development of a new strategic plan, which features the promotion of innovative teaching and learning, regional partnerships, service-learning opportunities, applied research, cultural engagement, and athletic excellence. He has frequently stated his desire for McNeese to play an active role in the civic and economic renaissance likely to transform Southwest Louisiana over the next five years.

Bruce Hemphill Athletic Director
Bruce Hemphill begins his second year as athletic director for McNeese after the former associate AD at the University of Wyoming
and assistant to the AD at the University of North Carolina became the ninth athletics director in school history in August of 2013. “Bruce understands the role athletics plays in the larger university environment and he understands the difficulty we face with the athletic budget and the importance of increasing revenue through private sources and auxiliary means,” said McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams. The first year under Hemphill was an eventful one as McNeese’s athletic programs excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom. Academically, McNeese set a school record by having five players named as the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. The program also led all conference schools in the 2014 spring semester with 21 student-athletes compiling a perfect 4.0 grade point average. And Cowgirl softball player Alana DiVittorio became just the second player in the sport to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. Athletically, McNeese finished fifth out of the 14 SLC schools for the 2013-14 SLC Commissioner’s Cup standings and led all Louisiana schools. The Cowgirl softball team won a school record 40 games en route to its second consecutive league championship and the Cowboy football team won 10 games and qualified for its league-record 15th FCS playoff appearance. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball, all qualified for the league postseason tournament. During his first year as the department leader, he’s been very active in helping raise funds for the new Health & Human Performance Center that will also be the new home of McNeese basketball and volleyball as well as spearheading beautification projects at the athletic field house, among many other accomplishments. The Sulphur, La., native has 25 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won All-Academic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physical education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. In 2003 he returned to North Carolina and accepted a position as athletics director at a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state. Hemphill has two sons - James, 19, a sophomore basketball player at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and Jack, 15, a sophomore in high school, and a daughter, Hayden, 18, a senior in high school. Now in its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of existence. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed four additional members in 2013: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. Austin). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewership through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. In its first six years, the network has received recognition for its work, earning numerous College Sports Media and Telly Awards. The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A total of 856 student-athletes appeared on the honor roll following the 2013 spring semester, and total of 1,553 student-athletes earned a spot on the honor roll at the end of the fall and spring semesters during the 2012-13 academic year. While successful on the fields and courts, the Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. The conference continues to make great strides in the classroom. During the last seven years, no other Division I conference has improved its Academic Progress Rate as well as the Southland Conference has. In fact, in 2009-10, the Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Division I leagues in men’s basketball APR. The academic progress the league has shown ultimately leads to higher graduation rates for our student-athletes. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.
