B
alaklava is famous for its racecourse and the Balaklava Cup – which has, at times, drawn bigger crowds than the Adelaide Cup. Balaklava unashamedly is a farming town. Its borders are embraced by the grain crops which have supported the community for more than 150 years. After some previously tough harvests, this season is looking promising – and as you travel home after a great day at the Cup, you will see crops of golden canola, wheat, barley, and more, stretching on forever. There’s big money out there. But the gambler in you must recognise the massive punt our local grain farmers take to provide the backbone to South Australia’s economy. Through seasons good or bad, Balaklava has remained the major town of the Adelaide Plains region; a hub of commerce, with schools, a hospital, new housing estates, a large retirement village, quality sports facilities and a growing local business sector. The town itself is home to about 1500 people – but many more live on the outlying farms beyond the town boundary. Now, because of its close proximity to Adelaide (about an hour from Gepps Cross) Balaklava is generating even more business interest as poultry farms spend millions of dollars to move into the area. Read more of this elsewhere in this special edition. But also be aware there are a number of other things to see and do for racegoers wanting to return to the Adelaide Plains. The district’s golf course and scenic walking trails are worth visiting, including the Rocks Reserve, south of Balaklava. An 11.5 hectare picnic spot, it is a

unique formation of rock carved naturally by the River Wakefield. There are a number of walking trails in the reserve, where visitors can enjoy the area’s flora and fauna. At Balaklava Golf Club you can play a round on their 18-hole championship golf course. The club is planning a multimillion upgrade of its facilities, to include accommodation, a restaurant and wellness centre. Or go gliding at Whitwarta
airfield, north of the town, with Balaklava Gliding Club. The town is also well known for its arts, including the annual music Eisteddfod (held in August) and Balaklava Courthouse Gallery, which holds regular exhibitions by local painters and other artists. The history of the wheatbelt town can be learnt at two sites operated by the Balaklava Museum – Centenary Hall, on May Tce, which features a range
of household items, clothing, books and photographs, war memorabilia and old shop fronts from the district’s early days, and Urlwin Park, on Short Tce, which houses a collection of vintage farm tractors, tillage and harvesting implements, and stationary engines.

Fishing is also a popular pursuit amongst locals, with nearby Port Wakefield giving anglers the
perfect place to throw in a line from a boat or the jetty. The area’s mangrove trails offer excellent access to the habitat and are popular with birdlovers – the area is one of Australia’s most important sites for migratory birds. For motoring enthusiasts, Mallala is the home of many national and international motor sport events and thrillseekers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to skydive at Lower Light.
The Balaklava Cup story ... why it’s a winner
I
t’s grown and evolved to the point where the racing is perhaps just an excuse for the event itself, but the Balaklava Cup has earned its place on the winners circle as the premier country race meet on the state’s racing calendar. But it wasn’t always so, according to Balaklava Racing Club chief executive officer, Doug Hall. In the 70s, the cup was fading to a non-event. “It was pretty much just a race,” Mr Hall said. “The racing club’s major event in those days was on Melbourne Cup day, when it was the only race meeting to be held in South Australia.” It wasn’t until 1980 when the club committee made a controversial decision to change the cup from a 2200 metre race to 1600 metres that the event took off. At a time when the racing industry was
focused on breeding sprinters rather than distance runners, the committee, then chaired by Bob Linke, ignored the criticism and made the change to a mile sprint. Within five or six years the Cup had great exposure and a growing reputation, with high stake money, and Malaysia Airlines came on board as a sponsor. At the new distance, the Cup became a listed race, and was widely recognised in the industry. It is now one of only two listed races to be held in SA outside Adelaide. The Cup had proven its worth with the population, trainers, owners, jockeys and the horse industry in general. Then the committee made a decision to shift its focus to include making Cup day an event in itself, not simply another race day. “They moved away from concentrating entirely on racing and looked at making a day
that could be enjoyed by a range of people who may or may not have an interest in racing,” Mr Hall said. And it has continued to be a success, drawing record crowds each year despite being held on a Wednesday at the end of winter, 100km from Adelaide and with no public holiday to give punters an excuse for a day off work. And now, many rural South Australians, use the Balaklava Cup as their annual meeting point. While years ago many caught up once a year at the Royal Adelaide Show, Mr Hall said the Balaklava Cup had also become a popular venue for reunions. Each year you’ll see the same crowd gathered at the members bar, and the same groups congregated in the betting ring catching up with mates and enjoying the festivities. Most have attended for years and
all know it’s a day not to be missed. However, Mr Hall said there were plenty of changes to come in the racing industry in the next few years. Talks of rationalisation have caused some to doubt the club’s future, but Mr Hall is confident of continued success. “The Balaklava Cup will survive,” he said. Even if the club undergoes changes because of turmoil within the industry, Mr Hall is confident the cup will always be run in Balaklava. “It’s the most successful club in the state,” said Mr Hall, listing its return to the industry, successful race meets and relatively low running and maintenance costs as positives. “If any decision is made on pure financial reasons, Balaklava will be the club to retain,” he said. “We’re very well poised to run for another 105 years.”

tyle will be just as important for men as women at this year’s Balaklava Cup, with men eligible to enter the all-important Fashions on the Field event for the first time in the Cup’s 104-year history. Cup spokeswoman Bonnie Parker says several fashion “spotters” will be prowling the race course for good looking colts and fillies, in case they are too shy to nominate themselves. “We’re really looking forward to seeing what the men do this year,” Ms Parker says. “I think they will range from the stylish pinstripe to outlandish all-coloured suits. “It will be the younger ones who go all out with colour. The older men are more (likely to dress in a) classic style.” There are four categories for this year’s fashion event – fillies (women aged 35 years or under), women (aged over 35 years), men and best hat. Among the prizes up for grabs is a $900 necklace from Jeff Tims for the best dressed woman, a pair of $700 earrings for the best dressed filly and a $100 AgFert voucher for

She says serious fashion entrants won’t be the most comfortable at the track, but with the amount of prizes on offer she believes it will all be worthwhile. “I don’t think comfort and style go together in the same sentence,” she says. “People will definitely be dressing for style.” Registrations for Fashions on the Field will open in front of the grandstand at 11am and close at 12.15pm. Finalists will be announced at 1pm, with final judging at 1.30pm. Entry is free.
Local look Megan McArdle says being the “face” of the Balaklava Cup has given her a taste of what it’s like to be groomed and pampered – and she could get used to it! “Getting pampered has been a bit unusual but it’s been very nice,” the 22-year-old says. “It’s been a lot of fun … I would like to do a little bit more (modelling) – it’s exciting.” Balaklava Racing Club decided to go with a local girl for this

he Balaklava Cup is not just for those who like a flutter. Balaklava Racing Club chief executive officer Doug Hall says the Cup appeals to everyone – whether they know the difference between an exacta and a quinella, or not. “The Balaklava Cup is more than just a race,” Mr Hall says. “It’s got it’s own culture now. “Had the races been cancelled last year (due to the Equine Influenza outbreak), the day still would have gone ahead – it’s bigger than the race: it’s an event just like going to the Royal Adelaide Show, or the football, or any other big event.” For those not interested in racing, the
Fashions on the Field competition provides great fun, for both entrants and spectators. More than 80 marquees on the course will showcase a range of themes and entertainment, with live bands performing throughout the day. A variety of food stalls will also be available. For the serious punters, the day gets underway at noon with the 1200m Atlas Party Hire maiden race. The all-important Balaklava Cup will be run shortly after 4pm, followed by the Cup presentation at 4.20pm. Races will continue after the presentation, before the day ends with Race 10 running at 5.20pm.

herever you look on the Adelaide Plains, there is growth - and not just in the paddocks of our local farmers. Poultry farms are appearing seemingly overnight, wind turbines decorating the skyline, and housing developments to cater for an expanding population. Then there are the longer-standing industries, with farming, Primo abattoir, Gilmac and Balco hay exporters, and the northward spread of horticulture and the state’s ‘food bowl’. Add to this the exciting proposal for a waterfront living development at Port Wakefield, and a tranquil proposed tourism/housing development at the picturesque Balaklava Golf Club, and it’s easy to see the Adelaide Plains is a region poised for huge growth and development.

4 Primo The processing of pork at Port Wakefield and the expected expansion of Primo’s Port Wakefield abattoir provides numerous employment opportunities. The company is currently nearing completion of its slaughter floor rebuild after fire destroyed much of the boning room and slaughter floor in February, 2007. But rather than let staff go, Primo went to great lengths to temporarily relocate its boning room to Royal Park, with workers travelling by bus each day until the boning room was again operational. Some slaughterfloor staff were relocated to Murray Bridge, where killing still takes place. And as with any rebuild, Primo took the opportunity to make use of the most advanced technology possible, creating a much more water efficient abattoir.

4 d’VineRipe When Timbercorp announced its intention in July 2006 to build a $25 million, state of the art tomato production glasshouse near Two Wells with d’VineRipe, the locals quickly became fascinated with the project and all it would bring to the region. Taking on 80 full time equivalent employees and offering flexible shifts to suit employees with families, the 8.2 hectare glasshouse was a major plus for the Adelaide Plains. And as developers added to the infrastructure in the region by connecting a gas pipeline and recycled Bolivar water, it may lead to other future industry growth. By the end of its first year in production, d’VineRipe will exceed its target of marketing 5000 tonnes of truss tomatoes. The company is currently considering doubling the size and production of the glasshouse, but is yet to make a definite decision.

Two Wells locals are also excited about a proposed rejuvenation of the town centre. Months of careful planning and community consultation has led to the development of a masterplan outlining room for improvement within the town. Facilitated by District Council of Mallala, the masterplan includes exciting opportunities for a market plaza, a restaurant and cafe precinct, and walking and cycling trails linking every aspect of the town’s community life.

The local hay industry is not simply restricted to farmers growing hay. Within a 15 kilometre radius of Balaklava are two major hay exporters. Based in Balaklava and with a processing plant at Bowmans, Balco Australia has steadily grown to become one of Australia’s major hay exporters. On the other side of town, Gilmac is also continually expanding and thriving in the export hay market.
In Port Wakefield, the new Gateway Estate has also proven a success, providing affordable house and land packages. Benbournie Estate in Blyth is an attractive option for those wanting to live on the cusp of both the Plains and the Clare Valley, taking in the best of both. Two Wells and Lewiston are also growth hot spots, with a rapidly expanding population, offering residents a peaceful rural setting within a stones throw of Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

And with its close proximity to Adelaide and country atmosphere, the Plains is also a lifestyle choice for many looking for a tree change. In Balaklava, the Wattle Ridge housing estate proved a success, with nearly all the estate’s 50 allotments snapped up by buyers, and developers preparing for the estate’s second stage.
The Chapman family, well known for their Hindmarsh Island marina, have recognised the growth in the Adelaide Plains and its future potential. Their proposal to build a waterfront living development at Port Wakefield has been declared a major project by State government, and developers are awaiting release of the environmental impact statement guidelines. Wakefield Waters is expected to include 2000 homes, significantly expanding the seaside community of

800 people. Plans are also underway for a separate shopping centre, which will include a supermarket, medical centre and other business opportunities. This has been given planning approval by Wakefield Regional Council, and plans are still being finalised. The shopping precinct will be a staged development, growing with the population of Port Wakefield.

The Bowmans industrial area, which is home to ABB Grain silos, Balco Australia, and Patrick Portlink, is vital to the future growth of the area. It has been identified as an area for future industrial growth, via a rail hub linking with the Adelaide to Darwin line. Mining exploration company Gulf X is the most recent to consider the potential of Bowmans. The company is currently searching for lignite at Beaufort, Whitwarta and Port Clinton, with an eventual view to construct a premium diesel production plant in the area, creating hundreds of jobs and reducing South Australia’s complete reliance on diesel produced interstate.
4 Livestock The Adelaide Plains has been identified by the livestock industry as the ideal place for expansion. Its roads and infrastructure, close proximity to processing plants and feed supplies, and the availability of cheap land all work in the industry’s favour. Several chicken farm development applications have been lodged with Wakefield Regional Council, in addition to many already built. The South Australian Livestock Market at Dublin attracts buyers and sellers from across the state, and to complement it, Normanville Export Meatworks proposes to build a $9.5 million sheep and cattle processing facility, also near Dublin. The company has lodged a development application with District Council of Mallala, and if successful, the abattoir will employ 150 people.

Racegoers attending Balaklava by bus are assured that getting home will be much easier this year than previously. Balaklava Racing Club chief executive officer Doug Hall says marquee guests will be able to board their bus next to their tents to avoid any confusion about which bus to catch. Those travelling on other buses and coaches will be picked up between gates A and B, on Racecourse Road. “Last year (racegoers) didn’t know where to find their bus to go home. This year (those on buses not organised by marquee holders) will know that if they were dropped off on the bus between Gate A and Gate B, then the bus will be parked there again at the end of the day to take them home,” Mr Hall says. Mr Hall says buses will also no longer have to queue to exit the grounds, which previously resulted in full busloads being forced to wait for buses ahead of them to collect stragglers. Public toilets will be available behind the marquees and in the members’ car park, while first aid facilities will also be on hand.
