An early Christmas gift boosts Wakefield Regional Council:
$75,000 for Balaklava’s town plan
Balaklava’s 20/20 Master Plan will be progressed with the help of grant funding. Wakefield Regional Council will receive $75,000 to develop design guidelines for the project’s first stage. The funding is part of the $4.85 million open space program, in which State government allocates funding to projects in metropolitan and regional South Australia. Council will also contribute $75,000 towards the project, which will focus on the town’s gateways; guidance to the town centre; developing the Triangle; creating a sustainable town centre development strategy; developing the amenity and presentation of the oval and showgrounds; and implementing a streetscape and public space strategy. • Continued Page 6
Hamley Bridge set to double in size
The Hamley Bridge township could double in size within 10 years, with developers proposing a residential expansion. Gemtree Property, a company responsible for several developments in regional South Australia, has set its sites on a 500-home development south and east of the existing township. Managing director, Simon Cross, said Hamley Bridge appealed to the company for a range of reasons. “It’s a beautiful township,
By Lauren Parker with the old heritage buildings and the history with the rivers and railways, and the twin bridges,” he said. Adding to its appeal is the proximity to Gawler and the new Northern Expressway. “It’s going to provide a very good transport route to get into the northern areas and open up a lot of growth,” Mr Cross said. “Hamley certainly sits in a very attractive environment with
the rivers, and has significant potential as a quality destination.” Mr Cross believes Hamley’s location is ideal, and with residential developments occurring at Freeling and Kapunda, it’s evident other developers are also looking to the north to cater for population growth. “There’s obviously strong demand for housing in that area,” he said. Mr Cross said Hamley Bridge already had much of the necessary infrastructure, and that any

residential expansion would be linked with the existing township, rather than separated. Wakefield Regional Council agreed last Wednesday to support a developer-funded Development Plan Amendment (DPA) which would allow the rezoning of the area proposed to be developed - about 64 hectares - from primary production to residential. A small area is already zoned residential. • Continued Page 2

Message to Santa brings us holiday fun
D
ear Santa: I do hope you don’t deliver one of those in-car GPS thingo’s to me for Christmas. I was reading in a paper the other day where people spend more time looking at their car GPS than where they are going. That must explain why there’s so many bad drivers in Balaklava – and why they drive so slowly. I was amazed when a woman commenting on the GPS she used said how she often was aware the machine was taking her the wrong way – but followed its advice anyway! Good grief. Have we become so dependent on machines we now unquestionably follow their instructions? But the idea of a woman who always follows my advice does appeal. I’ll have one of those. The one I have now hasn’t been able to do that very often – and it’s even worse when I use her as my direction finder, reading from the street directory because I don’t
bathroom. Running into Gavin from “Dunworkin” in the ablutions block and discussing the merits of Coromal or Jayco through/over the dunny wall is not on my holiday agenda. But Janine and Graham would like that. They have a new van and I can see Janine relaxed with her LaTerry zyboy (no, silly, not Graham) sipping a Kardonnay. And the newlyweds, Williams Derek and his little fairy princess, Gaynor, will probably make good use of theirs beside the Murray over Editor@plainsproducer.com.au the hols, with the Bonds and Dalls and the gang. They say the “apres ski” parties have a GPS. Why must women turn the map up the other way? It will are a hoot! Purdie Barr – you know Purdie, be interesting during the holidays if we take that road trip we’ve been she used to work here but now she’s lost somewhere waaaay out there promising ourselves. We’ll have to take the dogs with at Watchman – can’t wait to get us, so I’ve been scanning the internet to West Balaklava Beach caravan park, where she will again run into for “pet friendly” caravan parks. We’ll stay in a cabin, of course, everyone else from the district as there is no caravan and never who say they go there to meet will be. The cabin will have its own new friends.

Fred and Trish and Marc and Di and Bazz and Tina probably will be there again. I do hope Trish gets rid of those frightful Croc shoes I saw her in. Can’t she find something else from the bargain table? She might try Harbour Town – but I know she won’t go there. Megafarmer Peter Evans might set up his van down the road from his house, where he has a block of land. You know, just to get the feel of the place. Get “the vibe” of the new Nine Mile Castle. Santa, it would be very helpful to ratepayers if you could deliver a result to the Evans v Wakefield Regional Council court case ASAP. While you’re delivering the pressies, could I suggest a copy of Dale Carnegie’s timeless classic, “How to Win Friends and Influence People” to all councillors – particularly at Mallala, but it wouldn’t hurt to stop at Scotland Place in Balak, where some of Dale’s “fundamental techniques in handling people” wouldn’t go
astray: Avoid arguments; show respect for the other person’s opinions; never tell someone they are wrong; if you’re wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically; don’t criticise, condemn or complain and give honest and sincere appreciation. Speaking of appreciation, it would be nice if Santa could deliver two flagpoles and banners to Fran Henderson. She’s been working so hard to get these set up in Balaklava. Fran deserves a big “thankyou” from everyone for her efforts. Another dozen or so delivered mid year would be good. And Santa, Toody Allen and all who used the Ralli Park courts would like you to deliver the grant funding for a new surface. Enough of the demands. Time to say thanks for reading over the months and years. Have a happy and safe Christmas and wonderful New Year. And that’s all folks!
‘Comfortable’ growth plan for Hamley • From Page 1 It is expected to take up to 18 months for the DPA to be approved, and a development application would then take another six months. The land is already contracted to Gemtree Property, with only a small portion not yet contracted. Mr Cross said Gemtree Property was keen to work with the local community throughout the development process, and hoped work would begin in about two years. Comprising about 500 allotments, Mr Cross said it would be a staged development, occurring over six to eight years. He said the next step would be community consultation, and the company would be seeking significant community input. “It’s all about improving the area and
having the area grow in a direction that’s comfortable,” Mr Cross said. The development will take a masterplanned approach, linking in with the existing township rather than being built separately to the town. Wakefield Regional Council mayor, James Maitland, said the presentation given by Gemtree Property to council last Wednesday was the first step in what would be a long process. “Council basically agreed in principle to have a look at it,” he said. “The way the proposal was put had quite some appeal, particularly in relation to the NEXY changing the traffic movement direction in that area north of Adelaide.” Mr Maitland said he believed council was viewing the proposal positively, but at this stage had only agreed to look into the proposal.
More colour in Producer THE Plains Producer is introducing more colour pages into editions as a new press is commissioned in Kadina, where the paper is printed by arrangement with the Yorke Peninsula Country Times. Readers will notice relocation of some regular features and some changes from today and as more colour pages are printed in 2010. Plains Producer managing director, Andrew Manuel, said the use of more colour would be of benefit to advertisers as well as readers. “We are anticipating an increase in the overall size of the paper as more colour allows us to introduce extra features, in a bigger, better and brighter Plains Producer,” Andrew said. “I look forward to presenting a range of advertising and feature options to our clients when we return in January.” • The Plains Producer closes for holidays from today, with the office opening again on Wednesday, Janaury 13 with the first paper out on Janaury 20, with a Tour Down Under special edition.
Don’t let speech delivery mask message It was the great Algerian writer, Albert Camus, who suggested in his novel, The Outsider, that it is better to leave the stage having provoked emotion, than to make an exit to the, at best, hollow sound of polite applause, only to be forgotten as the lights dim. Ben Angel’s speech at the Balaklava High School’s Presentation Evening certainly provoked a response, and certainly has not been forgotten, as, sadly, are

many other highly worthy and excellently delivered keynote addresses that have been heard over the years. In many ways I agree with the sentiments expressed in the letter from Andrew and Cathy Rowe, published in the Plains Producer on December 16, particularly in reference to Ben’s use of innuendo, language choice and his use of risqué humour which was perhaps more in keeping with a completely adult forum,

The old science block at Balaklava High School has been flattened, making way for a brand new science centre The science lab had been at the school since the mid 1970s, but was built in 1963. Included in the new $1.97 million development will be a new agricultural studies room, physics room and a general learning area. Principal Mark Healy said the new building would be interlinked with the existing science buildings to establish a science precinct. Building is expected to start in early January, with completion set for term three.

as opposed to a school presentation event. Yet it is Ben’s message that we must bear in mind. He encouraged our students to be confident to be themselves, to be limited only by their own imaginations and, perhaps, most of all, to be happy. These are all things that Ben has learnt from his journey to this point. These are all things I, as a parent, teacher and school principal, firmly believe in, and I applaud Ben’s passion in his raising of these important aspects of life. As to Ben’s “advice” to the students of “not listening to their parents,” this too needs to be placed in context. Yes he did say this, but he also said his advice was not to listen to any advice, including what he was saying! Confronting humour – perhaps – provocative certainly. As a teacher and certainly as a parent I hope and trust our children will grow beyond us but I also hope, and know, that the values we have
expressed, and lived, and the examples we demonstrate will support and guide our children long after we have gone. Yes Ben’s presentation was provocative and was certainly not something that is standard fare at such evenings. While I understand the issues raised in the letter to the editor, we must not let the manner of delivery of the keynote address mask the message, nor diminish an excellent evening that certainly showcased the great array of talent and achievements of our fine students at Balaklava High School. Mark Healy Principal Balaklava High School
Positive take by graduate As a member of the 2009 graduating class I am disappointed by the negative response to the keynote speech by Ben Angel at the Balaklava High School presentation evening. Ben was invited to tell his story and his refer-
ences to homosexuality and suicide were a part of his life journey. It would have been inappropriate to leave out these integral aspects. The focus of his speech was his struggles with who he is as a person and his advice to us, the students who will undoubtedly face our own identity issues in life. This is the 21st century and if references to homosexuality and suicide are considered inappropriate when addressing the age bracket that these issues most affect then perhaps Ben’s comments about living in the 80s are more accurate than he probably intended. As to the smuttiness of his language, walk past a group of year 9 students at lunch time and you’ll hear far worse language. Personally, I came away with a more positive view to accepting myself and my place in the wider world I am preparing to enter. Emily Playford, Balaklava High School student

... and what a great result for Sophie By Lauren Parker Shamus Liptrot, of Halbury, is among 19 Mid North students to achieve one or more merits for outstanding achievement in SACE this year. Sophie van Kleef, who attended Annesly College, achieved two merits in PE and chemistry, giving her an almost perfect TER of 99.05. Across the state, 124 country students were acknowledged for the achievement, but for Shamus, it was particularly rewarding. After being involved in a very serious cycling accident two years ago, the Balaklava High School student was determined to do his best at everything he tackled - whether it was schoolwork or getting back on a bike. He received merits in two subjects- health, recreation and the community I and II. “I am happy with how I went because I knew it would be really hard for me.” Shamus said he was grateful for the support he received through the school. Setting himself high aims, Shamus was disappointed with the Bs and Cs amongst his results, but ecstatic to receive the merits.
SOPHIE van Kleef celebrates her high-scoring SACE achievement at home in Balaklava.
A night of comedy will take place early next year as a fundraiser for Halbury cyclist Shamus Liptrot. Former Balaklava resident Anthony ‘Capper’ Lamond is organising the fundraiser, which will feature guest speaker Mark Riccuito. Adelaide stand-up comedians Jamie Hill, Steve Gee, Anthony Lamond and Rod Gregory have had a sell-out season, and are bringing their show to Balaklava on Friday, February 12. For the last 12 months, Lamond has been hitting the clubs and pubs
of the Adelaide comedy circuit and is quickly becoming a crowd favourite. “When I first told my mates I was doing stand-up comedy everyone laughed, but no-one is laughing now,” he jokingly said. Former Crows captain, Brownlow medallist, premiership player and eight times all Australia Mark Riccuito will be guest speaker, and will be interviewed by ABC Grandstand Radio’s Michael Philipou. A goods and services auction will further add to the fundraising tally, followed by a DJ to provide entertainment into the night.

Lamond, admitting he still felt a strong sense of community for his home town, said money raised would go towards Shamus Liptrot’s rehabilitation so he could follow his dreams of riding in the Tour de France. The wheels on the Welke bus will no longer go round and round, as Faye and Keith Welke prepare for the end of an era. The Snowtown couple said goodbye to their school/charter bus this month when it turned 25 and their contract expired. Having served the area as an independent school bus service for the past 30 years, the Welkes are saddened by the separation, as are the students who rode the bus every day. On Friday December 11, Faye kept her emotions intact during the last school bus run, with parents and ex-students also boarding for the final farewell. “It was a sad day, but I didn’t cry,” Faye said. The bus covered the Everard bus run, which picked up and dropped off about 11 students, compared to a full bus at certain times during its years of service. Now these children will be included in the other two bus runs. “It makes sense, with fewer children on the run now,” Faye said. While Keith and Faye will take away years of good memories from the bus run, their greatest gain is the many friendships formed over the generations. Keith said his best memory was the opportunity to serve two generations. “It’s a joy to take students to school and in some instances we have been able to take their children to school as well,” Keith said. Faye enjoyed the early morning rises, and being able to watch the sun creep up over fog covered hills. Following the construction of the wind turbines was also exciting. Faye fondly remembers peaceful encounters with kangaroos, and a not-so-peaceful encounter with a stray cow. But, after receiving a carton
Keith and Faye Welke are farewelled by Snowtown Area School students, from left: Gerard Savage, Jake Wallis, Stephanie Fountain, Ebony Freebairn, principal Cheryl Glenie, front: Jack Kleinig and Mikayla Fountain. of beer from the cow’s owner, the Welke boys think Faye should hit cows more often! Thankfully, Faye won’t be saying goodbye to the children, as she now works as the Christian Pastoral Support Worker for Snowtown Area School. “I’m very fortunate in that I can still see the children,” she said. Keith will continue driving the government school bus to Redhill, as well as working as the Snowtown Area School groundsman. Understandably, many students were upset about the departure of the Welkes and their bus. Students who have travelled on the bus with Faye drew pictures and wrote about how they’re going to miss her as a bus driver. “It’s very, sad they’re leaving. I’m going to miss them, and the bus,” student Mikayla said.

The people of Christ Church Balaklava celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the Anglican church on November 22, with a Sung Eucharist and shared lunch. Past congregation members along with visitors from within the ministry district and guests from other Balaklava churches joined us for the celebration. Bishop Garry and Father Gunnar led a well-planned and enjoyable service, highlights of which were the choir singing during communion and the playing of the harp by Meriel Lane. Bishop Garry delivered his usual inspiring and thought-provoking address, challenging everyone to look back over the church year and assess how they progressed on their journey of faith. A delicious lunch and time of fellowship and friendship followed as old acquaintances were renewed and memories shared. • The formalities ended with the cutting of the anniversary cake. The honour was shared (left) by one of the youngest members, Tory Lane, and one of the church’s oldest members, Maureen Hennessy. A true celebration of 125 years of faith and worship at Christ Church was enjoyed by all. –Gill Ackland

The man was reported for failing to exert effective control over the vehicle. • A 21-year-old farmhand was reported last week for an incident that occurred in April last year. Small pay rise for councillors
Wakefield Regional Council reviewed its councillor allowances at its meeting last Wednesday, voting for a slight increase to allowances. However, some councillors initially sought to retain the previous allowances. The mayor will now receive $12,512, deputy mayor $6954 and councillors $5557.
Negotiations on farming land
A 295-acre parcel of land seven kilometres south of Balaklava was passed in at auction last week. Four bidders registered at the auction, however the reserve was not met. Landmark agent Mel Haynes said negotiations with interested parties were continuing.

Blyth’s Christmas
Street party fun is talk of the town A party atmosphere filled Blyth’s main street for the action packed annual Christmas street carnival last Friday night. Organised by Blyth Progress Association, the carnival was supported by the town’s groups and clubs. Fancy dress competition attracted a record 20 entrants, stunning the crowd and judges Barry and Marie Spinks. Isobel Pratt and Bonnie Williams were the lucky winners. Decorated Bike Competition was also popular with Riley Stirling and Jess Morris winners.
This year saw the reintroduction of Grandma’s Kitchen, sponsored by Mid North Party Hire, which looked neat as a pin, until the tennis balls started firing at the fine porcelain and glassware scattered throughout the kitchen. The kitchen proved a huge hit with youngsters testing their accuracy while the light prevailed. Kids Muffin competition had a good representation of delicious muffins and new resident to Blyth, Maria Evans had the envious task of tasting and decided on Craig Walkley’s
recipe as the winner of the Rippa Dippa prize. The mild night meant a huge number of juniors entered the water balloon throwing championships, creating a lot of interest with the bucket of balloons needing to be guarded during competition. Thomas Carling and Bailey Jacka were the only two with unbroken balloons from 26 competitors. Senior competition winners AJ Wood and Ashley Hentschke just about ran out of Main street for their huge throws. Father Christmas

Father Christmas arrives in Blyth, with helpers Sophie Angel and Dylan Underdown, driven by Merve Smitham. was greeted by a large line of children when Merv Smitham drove Santa and his two helpers Sophie Angel and Dylan Underdown to his Magic Cave on the back of the Diamond T truck. Talented local Sarah Chessmur wandered the street on her stilts making cute balloon animals as she moved about talking to the crowd. Eight desserts were entered into the Quandong dessert competition judged by local school principal Dzintra Richards and husband Terry. Only half a point separated the winners with Janet Zweck taking home the major prize for her pie and Kerryn Mugge runner-up for her delectable cheesecake. Christmas Lights Competition was won by Tamara Pyrke for her display on South terrace. Kerryn and Grant Mugge
won runner-up. Children’s Choice, donated by Mark and Kim Eime, went to Josh and Serena King. Newcomers to the competition Mark and Heather Williams won the Encouragement Award donated by Mitre 10. New resident to Blyth, Jenny Pring, was elated when her name was announced as the winner of the giant Christmas stocking, courtesy of Christian White Carpentry, Blyth Post Office, Blyth Hotel and Pages Deli who were thanked for their continued support. Last item on the program was the Home Brew competition which also created some light humorous moments and heckling from the crowd. Sponsor Trevor Eime had the task of tasting and after much deliberation, awarded Greg Walkley first prize.

Horizon recognises talent
JAMES MAITLAND
Mayor’s Diary Great to be back
I
T’S great to return to the mayor’s role after my enforced absence over the past few months. I officially resumed duties for Wakefield Regional Council on December 1. I’m still receiving therapy for the slight stroke I suffered two months ago, but it is pleasing to be able to take part in affairs of council. My thanks to Deputy Mayor Barry Nottle for stepping in so ably. The support of CEO Phil Barry, councillors and council staff has been fantastic. And without the help of my wife Prue and our family it would have been a much harder battle to get where I am now. My personal thanks to all friends and members of community for their best wishes during my recovery. o I WAS in the mayor’s chair at the last council meeting for 2009 – last Wednesday, December 16 – when council considered the Hamley Bridge housing development you will see reported elsewhere in the Plains Producer. It’s early days yet – but like all potential developments, we must allow the proponents to present their case and assess its merits. o WHILST I was absent from some more “hands on” council duties, I did attend a Local Government Association regional meeting in Hawker in November and a meeting of the LGA State Executive in Millicent. Last Friday in Clare I was at the Central Local Government Region CEO’s conference. The LGA is working on its election strategies as the State government goes to the polls in March. This is a pro-active campaign by the LGA and is aimed at building relationships between councils and the new government, whether it be Labor, Liberal or a Coalition. Next year also is very important for all councils, with elections set for November. If you believe you can contribute to your community as a councillor, I urge you to consider nominating. o My very best wishes for a happy and safe Christmas and New Year to all residents in the Wakefield Plains Council area. Horizon Christian School held its end of year celebration service on Thursday, December 10 at Balaklava Town Hall. The primary school presentation started the evening, and was followed by the secondary school presentation. Each class awarded one student for academic excellence and most consistent, and an overall citizenship award was also presented for each year level. Students who achieved the highest grade for each subject in each year were also recognised. Graduating year 12 students received their milestone certificates, and special awards were presented for outstanding achievements in each subject.
• Highest achievers for each year 12 subject were: IPP: Clinton Baker. English: Rhys Clark Maths Studies: Harshpreet Ghataura. Physics: Jessica Hamann. Biology: Jessica Hamann. PE: Sharayah Kowalick Maths Apps: Krystal
Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork award winners (from left) Thomas Lawson (Yr10), Joshua Chapman (Yr 11) and Aishlea Smith (Yr 12), with Goyder MP, Steven Griffiths. Schutz. Drama: Krystal Schutz. Music: Aishlea Smith. Child Studies: Jasmyn Smith. Thomas Lawson (year 10), Joshua Chapman (year 11) and Aishlea Smith (year 12) were recipients of the Australian Defence Force Long Tan
Leadership and Teamwork awards. These students have demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership and teamwork either within school or in the wider community. The year 12 citizenship award went to Clinton Baker, while Harsh-
preet Ghataura received the academic excellence award, and Rhys Clark received the most consistent award. The presentation night was topped off with a power point show to reflect the year of schooling.
‘Fear not, a Saviour is born’
“Fear not, do not be afraid”. The angel spoke these words to Zachariah, to Mary, to Joseph, and finally to a group of shepherds on a hillside near Bethlehem. “Do not be afraid; for behold I bring you good news of great joy for all people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord”. Fear has a way of tying our stomachs up in knots, paralysing our thinking, inducing panic. Fear, and its cousin worry, can capture our hearts when we see ourselves caught in a vortex of disasters beyond our control. During Christmas 2008 the entire world was caught in the grip of an economic down spiral. Houses were being foreclosed on. People lost jobs, factories closed down. More and more you could see fear in people’s eyes. Will I lose my house? My job? What will become of us if this recession

deepens into a depression? How will I feed my family? Fear can grip us; choke all faith out of our hearts. Fear also drives economic depression. Fear causes companies to contract and people to stop buying. It causes runs on banks and panic on Wall Street. Fear constitutes a large part of the problem we face. A Saviour comes to rescue people in danger, preserve those who are threatened by harm, and protect his people from troubles that surround them. That’s what saviours do! That’s what Jesus came to do for us. Do not be afraid, because God has sent a Saviour to us, Jesus Christ the Lord. He is the one who will:
Never leave us or forsake us; Supply all our needs according to His riches in glory; add to us all the things we need as we seek Him and His kingdom. Our world doesn’t know. They think that Christmas is about gifts under a tree and a spirit of good cheer, with Christmas dinner and family around the table. But as good as all that may be, it isn’t nearly as good as the real Christmas. The Real Christmas message is this: God has sent a saviour for you. To save you from your sins and help you in this life, to lift your burden and ease your fears. That’s it! A Saviour who is Christ the Lord, God Himself. The world is gripped by fear, but fear’s hold has been broken in those of us who believe the angel’s words; “Fear not, for a Saviour is born to you, Christ the Lord!” • Christmas church times, Page 10.

Two Wells underpass opens Film extras needed
The opening of the Two Wells underpass last Friday marked another significant milestone in the state’s biggest road project in more than a century. Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, and Member for Light, Tony Piccolo, opened the underpass, which is part of the Northern
Expressway. The opening followed eight weeks of on-site work and more than 18,000 labour hours. The northern Expressway is scheduled to finish in September, providing a 23 km link between the Sturt Highway and Port Wakefield Road. “When construction is complete travel times
between Adelaide and the regions to the north will be reduced by about 20 minutes,” Mr Piccolo said. Thousands of trucks will use the expressway instead of local roads.
Film producers are keeping tight-lipped about a movie which will partly be filmed in Two Wells in January. A spokesperson said more information will be available from January 4, with filming starting on January 10 for about a week. Some businesses have been asked if shop signs can be changed during this period. The search is on for about 40 extras. Email extras@heesomcasting.com

What’s on your plate this Christmas? What’s on your Christmas dinner menu this year? Traditional turkey and plum pudding, Aussie prawns on the barbie? A recent research exercise revealed some interesting details of what might be included in traditional Christmas menus in different parts of the world. In Central and South America, much of the influence is Spanish – in Mexico, you might be served Tamale (a beef and cornmeal patty with salsa), chille rellenos, and ponche (hot fruit punch) as well as roast ham, turkey, pig and rice. In Venezuela, it is customary to serve hot chocolate, hallaca and cookies. Due to the small Christian presence in the region, some Asian countries don’t recognise Christmas and for many, Christmas Day is not a holiday. In Japan a special treat is their Christmas cake – a white whipped cream cake with strawberries – while the Filipino specialities include queso de bola (cheese

ball), tsokolate (hot chocolate) and jamon (ham), as well as suman and kalamay (sticky rice dishes). Across the Indian Ocean to Africa, the Nigerians spend weeks preparing, and traditional Christmas foods include Iyan (pounded yam), eba or amala, served with peppery stewed vegetables. The people eat this meal three to four times a day as they visit each other’s homes and, according to Yoruba custom, it is rude to decline when food is offered. Another Nigerian delicacy is Moin–moin (blended black beans mixed with vegetable oil and diced liver, prawns, chicken, fish or beef). The countries of Europe observe most of the traditions we usually

It’d be like toast without vegemite or a ute without a dog in the back (carefully harnessed of course.) With six out of 10 houses in Australia owning some kind of pet, there’s no denying we’re a nation of animal lovers. In fact, studies show that almost all owners chat to their pets and 80% reckon that they make great company. Our affection for our pets makes sense of the decidedly human names we’re giving them. Port Wakefield awash as ‘king tides’ threaten park POrt Wakefield resident Brian Hogben would have been swimming had he been where he is pictured this week. as our picture above shows, there was a vastly different scene last saturday night as high tides caused havoc, threatening Port Wakefield’s caravan park for the second time in two years. CFS group officer Chris Cowan, who took the picture above, said it was a close call for some residents. the king tides swamped the local

Farmers are holding out hopes of a better season than the previous four years, after yet another promising anzac weekend break. But after good starts to the previous seasons, they are all too aware of the dangers of getting their hopes up too early. On april 30 last year, the Plains Producer’s front page reported a similar break – but this year’s falls are more than double. Local agronomist, matt Gibbins, of aBB, said the previous seasons were impacting on just what farmers chose to sow this year. ■Continued page 2

2,500 new homes for Two Wells THE company behind a proposed development at Two Wells of 2500 homes hopes to blend the best of old and new when it comes to expanding the township. Hickinbotham Homes and urban designer Geoffrey Walker addressed District Council of Mallala at an information session Monday evening, outlining their plans and suggestions for Two Wells. Situated on a 313 hectare triangle parcel of land between Mallala road, Port Wakefield road, and Temby road, the developers propose a residential development of about 2500

homes, including several parks and vegetation corridors. Hickinbotham first approached council about 12 months ago, and have been openly communicating their ideas in the time since. They say “nowhere is better placed than Two Wells. if it goes ahead, the proposal could boost the population of Two Wells from about 800 to up to 9000. But developers see the proposal as being complementary
to the existing township. Hickinbotham Group managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, said the estate was designed around a number of large village squares and boulevards surrounded by a green parkland belt and provisions for a school and small retail precinct. “The new estate will provide a major boost to employment opportunities at Two Wells and will provide a much needed source of labour for the rapidly expanding horticultural development in the area, he said. ■ Continued page 2

But for Bianca, it won’t be the first time her sport has led to travel. as well as competing within australia, Bianca toured Holland last year through the australian institute of Sport. Before being selected as part of the junior world cup squad, Bianca had played as part of the junior national squad for the past few years. and the sport is a big commitment. Bianca trains seven to eight times a week in the leadup to a tournament, and five to
seven times a week during club season. But she finds it no hardship, and even when she was given a five day break from training after returning from Sydney, Bianca was back at training within days, eager to keep active and busy. constant training means a busy schedule for the second year university student, who is studying human movement and education, aiming to become a PE teacher.
as well as study and training, Bianca, who lives at Semaphore during the week but often returns to the family home for weekends, juggles coaching and working with school’s and their ‘active after schools’ programs. Bianca thanked her sponsors, Balaklava Foodland, and Balco and friends Phil and Helen Barry for their support. The junior world cup squad includes 24 players aged 16-21 from across australia.

By Lauren Parker such an appeal could cost each party up to $10,000 a day. t’s been an eventful year on the Adelaide Plains, with plenty of achievements, significant events, and sadly, tragedies. From the sheer determination displayed by Shamus Liptrot as he climbed from his wheelchair to speak to the Balaklava community last Australia day, to the news of millions of dollars of funding flowing in to local schools, there has been no shortage of news in the Plains Producer this year. Then there were people of the plains making huge achievements, whether it be in their own communities, helping bushfire victims interstate, or even ensuring the survival of native animals. Hickinbotham Homes announced its intention to build 2500 homes at Two Wells, and on a smaller scale, developer Colin Steinert announced the construction of 20 affordable homes in the Wattle Ridge development in Balaklava. The long-awaited Middle Beach boat ramp was approved, and District Council of Mallala’s chief executive officer, Damien Moloney, departed, with Charles Mansueto stepping into the role. Then there are the sporting premierships, the Wakefield River running for the first time in years, and even a dead whale washed ashore on the local coastline. The following pages will take you through just some of the numerous news events on the Adelaide Plains, month by month, in a reflection of the year that was.

Pageant attracts big crowd BALAKLAVA’S town centre was filled to capacity as hundreds of people gathered for the annual Christmas pageant. As the pictures on this page show, it was a real family occasion, with children delighting in the arrival of Father Christmas and forming a big queue to meet the jolly old fellow in his “Magic Cave.” This year’s pageant saw another mixed array of floats, with Balaklava’s A1 netball “fairy princesses” casting their spell over the crowd. Moving the pageant from Christmas eve certainly appeared to be justified.
Another big event at Balaklava primary school saw about 500 gathered on the primary school oval recently to celebrate the end of year with performances by the school band, choir and all 10 classes singing their Christmas song – then inviting the audience to sing a carol with them. Songs and carols could be heard and enjoyed in houses in the town. The finale included the whole school, including the teachers on the back of Osctrot’s semi-trailer singing “Rockin’ Christmas Medley.” Organisers thanked everyone who went along to enjoy a wonderful night.

’
ThaT is how Balaklava farmer Matt Tiller described the sensation of being electrocuted when on top of a grain storage silo. Matt, who became a father only two weeks ago, was knocked unconscious when a metal pipe he was holding possibly touched an overhead powerline – or the electricity arced. he was fumigating a silo on the Balaklava to Salter Springs road about 6.30 last Wednesday evening. The silo was not on Tiller’s property, but the family had an agreement with a piggery operator to use the silos to store grain. The power line is estimated to be about four metres above the silo. It is not yet clear exactly what occurred and the Plains Producer was told ETSa and Safework Sa are investigating. Thousands of volts of electricity surged through Matt’s body and he came

Another close win for the Eagles It’s a good thing I didn’t have to wait for Dribbler to see Santa. We did however see Santa come to town, and then it was basketball. It was a bit of a rush, but from all that took place it looked like the committee made the right decision. The men gave us at least two exciting and close games. The Eagles worked well together to hold out the Owen Meercats. Oldies PK Kowalick and Mark Taylor showed some of the form they still possess to lead the Eagles to another close win. They started the season losing a few close ones but it looks now like the pendulum has swung in their favour. Dribbler thought that Sonics would dispose of my favourites for the men’s division crown, the Bulldogs. Only four points separated them and Dribbler thinks the umpires were to blame. He still hasn’t grown up but young “Bricey” and “Nanks” have. I am still waiting for Simon to show us a big game. I reckon he is going to burst out soon and shoot a huge score. Lethal Leigh was in touch for the Young guns even though he is carrying a “leg”. Let’s hope it recovers over the break because I don’t think young Matty Pascoe can do it without him. He was good again on Friday night, and should be a member of our association team at the Country Championships in January. The division one women had one close game, but Dribbler was quite disappointed the Long Plains ladies didn’t turn up to contest the Bulldog girls in what he thought would have been the game of the night. Instead, Lightning gave him a game to get excited about with the two Alexandras – Wilson and Simon – having big nights to give them a good win over Owen. Hamley Bridge on the other hand ran away with their game against the Redlegs. Their team game and silky skills were just too much for the Redlegs girls, who on a number
Friday Night Lights Adelaide Plains Basketball Report By Three Points
of occasions forgot they were outside on asphalt. Dribbler reckons both Shannon Mudge and Belinda Blackwell would have to be sporting grazes or at least bruises from the way they threw themselves into the game. Owen Rowans were singing after their game in division three girls. They didn’t win, but a draw is the closest they have come to a win. Kirrily White played her usual dominating game but Georgia McArdle was more on target. Both teams need to practise more set up plays, something which should come as the season draws to an end. The other two teams, the Nuggets and the Breezers had a higher scoring game because they have a few more skilful girls. The Heaslip girls – Sarah and Jess – seemed to have fun playing
against each other but it was Kelsey Wedding’s talent that gave the Breezers their dominance. The division four boys games also gave us some close encounters, with young Tom Munzer and Samuel Carslake both in good form. Ashton Snowden showed good form too for Longies in their game against the Sonics, but Samuel Michael was just too strong giving the Sonics the edge. Dribbler wonders if the coaches of the juniors teach guarding drills as so many of them run in from the side or reach out with octopus-like arms. He reckons if he was umpiring most of them would be fouled off. It’s always easier to call games from the side lines and I think the umpires have done a great job. The break should give everyone a chance to practise. Dribbler can’t wait for Christmas to be over and for basketball to be on again. I am sure Santa has some basketballs and backboards to give out to some of the kids, so have a happy Christmas and Dribbler and I will be looking out for continuing the excitement of basketball in the new year.

Owen loses to Riverton again Perfect bowling conditions were welcome as bowlers met at various association venues for the final match before the Christmas – New Year break. The key match in Division One featured the clash between Owen and Riverton. A close tussle ensued for much of the match with Riverton gaining the advantage over latter ends to defeat Owen for the second time this season. In the remaining matches, Hamley Bridge and Balaklava had comfortable wins over their respective opponents. Port Wakefield had the bye for the round. Going into the break, no change in standings has occurred though Riverton has now edged 13 points

WOOROORA MEN’S BOWLING ASSOCIATION PREVIEW:
John Glistak looks at next year’s rounds
Top three sides all lose in Division Two Last weekend’s Division Two round saw the top three sides all defeated as well as a number of other results somewhat unexpected. Leaders Riverton White had their colours lowered by Balaklava White while second placed Port Wakefield Blue was upset by lowly Riverton Black. Mallala White defeated third placed Owen and elsewhere, Tarlee returned to the winners circle at the expense of Mallala Black. The close match of the round saw Hamley White narrowly defeat Balaklava Blue by two shots. Hamley Red and Port Wakefield Gold were also winners on the day. Going into the break, Riverton White has increased its lead over the competition despite its loss and also courtesy of other results on the day. Port Wakefield Blue sits in second spot but now the gap between itself and tenth spot has narrowed considerably; an indication of the evenness of much of the competition. Division Two: 19 December 2009 – Balaklava White 94(10) (M. Olsen 43, J. Olsen 23, C. Milton 28) def. Riverton White 58.25(2) (R. Hannaford 12, G. Stone 26, J. Glistak 20.25);

The Inter-Association Round Robin article that appeared in last week’s paper had the incorrect date for the event. The Inter-Association event will be played on Sunday January 10 at Clare Bowling Club, not January 19.

Bowler’s delight in Division One Bowls will resume on January 9, 2010. Division One matches that weekend and also in the round to be played on January 16 are a bowler’s delight with all matches likely to have an impact on standings. Balaklava hosts Riverton in the first of these matches. In their previous encounter, Balaklava was successful by 12 shots. Meanwhile, Riverton has defeated Mallala, Hamley Bridge and Owen in its last three matches. While home green advantage may favour Balaklava, they will nevertheless be very wary of a side that appears to be regaining its form. Mallala sits fifth while Owen is in second spot. For Mallala to close the gap between it and the top four, it must rely on other results as well as help its own cause by defeating Owen. Season form, however, points to Owen securing the win on this occasion. Both Port Wakefield and Wasleys also need to win to keep in touch with the top four and so their clash is vital as whichever side loses, faces an uphill battle for the rest of the season to make the four. Very little should separate these two sides though Port Wakefield did take the honours in their earlier meeting. Hamley Bridge has the bye on January 9. Division One matches on January 16 feature the clash between Owen and Hamley Bridge, the top two sides of the competition. At the break, Hamley Bridge had lost only once while Owen had lost twice; the losses for both sides were to Riverton. An intriguing match is anticipated with perhaps Hamley Bridge holding a slight edge based on season form. However, at the end of the day, the unexpected is possible. Port Wakefield faces another crucial match, this time against Riverton. Season form would suggest that Riverton may prove to be too strong on this occasion, thereby denting Port Wakefield’s aspirations of making the four. Mallala travels to Balaklava in another important match for the visiting side. Again, season form points to Balaklava securing the win in this encounter. Wasleys has the bye for this round. Division One: 9 January 2010 – Balaklava vs Riverton, Mallala vs Owen, Wasleys vs Port Wakefield, Hamley Bridge Bye. Division One: 16 January 2010 – Owen vs Hamley Bridge, Port Wakefield vs Riverton, Balaklava vs Mallala, Wasleys Bye.
A crucial two weeks in Division Two Division Two matches also resume on January 9 and that weekend’s round as well as the round on January 16 will finally determine which eight sides move into the Red Section. At the break, Riverton White is the only side guaranteed of a berth in the Red Section with the remaining seven berths still to be claimed. Three matches are likely to influence the standings in the first of the two rounds. Port Wakefield Blue hosts leaders Riverton White in a clash where both sides will be keen to avenge for their loss in the last match before the break. Hamley White will play sister side Hamley Red with very little separating the two sides. A very tight competitive match is on the cards. Balaklava Red faces a tough match against Tarlee with both sides eager to enhance their standing in the competition. Any number of the remaining matches could also produce surprise results on the day. The final round of matches on January 16 again features matches that will impact on the Division Two standings. In fact, every match can be billed as a feature match given the closeness of the competition during the first half of the season. At the end of the day, some sides will unluckily miss out on a berth in the Red Section – it may possibly go down to just one or two points, or even to shots up. What a finish to the first part of the season! Division Two draw The association executive will meet on Sunday January 17, 2010 to discuss and approve the draw for Division Two Red and Division Two White for the remainder of the season. All clubs will receive the respective draws via email within an hour or so after the meeting concludes. Division Two: 9 January 2010 – Riverton Black vs Port Wakefield Gold, Wasleys vs Mallala White, Owen vs Balaklava Blue, Hamley White vs Hamley Red, Port Wakefield Blue vs Riverton White, Mallala Black vs Balaklava White, Balaklava Red vs Tarlee Division Two: 16 January 2010 – Riverton White vs Mallala Black, Balaklava White vs Balaklava Red, Tarlee vs Hamley White, Hamley Red vs Owen, Balaklava Blue vs Wasleys, Port Wakefield Gold vs Port Wakefield Blue, Mallala White vs Riverton Black In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the break while you can. Plains Producer, Wednesday December 23, 2009

Past presidents meet for Clare tournament Twenty two bowlers from the Northern Branch of the Bowls Past Presidents’ Association travelled to Clare to join 48 members of the Lower North Branch for a tournament early in December. The day replaced a fixture that Lower North and Riverland branches held each year. It was such a success that it is planned for it to become an annual event played alternately at a club in each branch area. Lower North has members from Snowtown and Clare down to Two Wells and Barossa Valley, while Northern members come from the area including Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, and Crystal Brook. Teams consisted of men and women bowlers from both areas played before and after an excellent lunch catered for by the Clare club.
Clare Club secretary, Ian Simpson, welcomed players to their facility and Lower North President, Doug Maylin hosted the day and extended thanks to Clare for their hospitality. Three new members were inducted – Geoff Langley, from Nuriootpa, and Ian Simpson and Trevor Haysman, from Clare. Both winners and runners up were presented with some Clare produce for their efforts, and a meat raffle raised $240 for the Benevolent Fund, which recently has been donated to the Heart Foundation, and the Cancer Council. The next match for Lower North will be against Yorke Peninsula Branch at Balaklava on Monday January 18, 2010, and hopes to field a strong side to defend the Col Bennett Trophy, which was won last season.

Angela felt sorry for Mel but after being whipped by stalwart Denby Wandel, had to join her! Helen forced opponent Lisa Stirling to reveal her briefs, whilst Tania sat smugly at the bottom and cranked up her serves for a good win. Pauline and Janet Zweck played a fantastic set with the latter eventually winning 6-4. After her mixed win, Shaz was caught napping against Bec Carlin in an up and down 6-3. The men had a vast array of scores with most being 6-1 or 2. Freddo was consistent and had the same score as his mixed! Phil, Scott and the legend Don all had wins, whilst Scholzy joined the ‘bare’ ranks of Melissa and Angela. Jonathon had flashes of brilliance but was a bit rusty. Heading into the straight doubles, the visitors were ahead 10-8. The top two ladies had wins, with an excellent turnaround of scores for Pauline and Shaz who won a marathon tiebreaker after both losing their singles! Tania came second in a long 6-3. Melissa was very happy to finally win a set for the day! The dazzling duo of Scholzy and Don had an excellent 6-4 win with Dazza, like Melissa, very relieved to win a set for the day! Scott and Jonathon won a long 6-3 set, but the top pair of Derek and Phil couldn’t quite get there in a tense 6-4. Well done to three set winners Don and Helen. Final score Blyth 12-103 def Balaklava 12-101. Enjoy the break and we’ll see you back for the second half of the season, weather permitting…

Hot on the heels of a gang-buster crowd for our Thursday night hit ‘n giggle chook round, a field of nearly 40 crammed into the Captain’s office, hell-bent on dropping a fiver into the tin and hitting the fairways. Among this hoard were two new members, Steve Reimers and Andrew Hanson. We also hosted visitors from Pt Wakefield and Crystal Brook – Steve Nicolson, Steve Nitschke, Kevin Noll and Dave Cliff. We must un-gnash our dentures and speak first of the hallowed A graders. From their regal midst emerged none other than El Presidente himself, young Bill Lokan, who with 40 Stableford points mangled a resurgent Tate Michael’s day by coming first on a count back. A calculating, ever-wary Peter Lamont carved his way patiently home to take third place, with 36 points. Behind this triumvirate were R Butterworth (36), I Michael (35), M Hameister (35), W Berry (31) and R Lawson (31). In the B grade brigade it was Callum Michael who stood tallest on 40 points, Barrie “Bucket-hat” Michael (38) and that Dalek of destiny, Dean Trickett (36). They were followed under the watchful eyes of D Addison (36), L Masson (35), R Veitch (35), G Toms (34), G Sonntag (32), G Anderson (29), S Michael (28), R Hahn (25), O Egginton (24) and M Taylor (23). Over in the C grade collective the day was won by the determined Jordan Taylor (46), too good for Corey Temby (45) who knocked the remarkable Mike Hahesy into third place on a count back. Rounding out the mob were B Thompson (44), Ben Michael (41), D Robinson (40), J Napper (37), T Matz (37), M Bell (34), A Henstridge (32), J Wilson (31) and J Michael (29). Three Birdies were achieved, one by Merv Hameister on the eighth, while both Greg Sonntag and “Rotten” Ron Butterworth scored on the third. Nearest the Pin claims were laid successfully by Corey “Greedy-guts” Temby on both the third and 17th, Rob Lawson (eighth), Bill Lokan (10th) and Callum Michael (15th). A further partial round of the Summer Cup was played out, with Bill Lokan defeating Rob Lawson 6/5, Ian Michael finally out-lasting Merv Hameister on the 19th and Austin Henstridge reeling in a strongswimming Scott Michael 2 up. See you all in the new year! Thanks to Barrie Thompson and Trevor Reid for their tireless efforts in maintaining the course.

Amazing Race at Mallala Happy Hearts Fitness held it’s Christmas breakup on Friday December 11 with an Amazing Race on foot around Mallala, earning points by collecting objects, answering questions about the town and using team work to solve problems at designated stations around Mallala. Teams were allowed to bribe organisers at each station with donations for answers, however points were deducted. Winners were ‘The Mischiefs’, consisting of Cheryl Chenoweth, Ian Stuart, Andrew Pratt and Lisa Redpath, with the ‘Killer Santas’ coming a close second. The winners were were given skipping ropes to ensure their fitness didn’t deteriorate over the festive season! Happy Hearts Fitness instructor Penny Mathew was very pleased with the success of the evening. “We managed to raise $100 on the night with bribes and donations for the Walking for Mac which was fantastic.”
‘RAGE Against the Machine’ team members Karin Tiller, Sue Humphrys, Yvette Jenkin and Tania Lush relax with a glass of wine after finishing the race. LEFT: Ben O’Leary mows the lawn out the back of Mallala Hotel for his team. RIGHT: Andrew Pratt and Ian Stuart attempt to get a weighted balloon out of a pool.

Glenn back with Port Former Balaklava footballer Glenn Dawson has been selected as a rookie by Port Adelaide Football Club. Dawson was delisted by the club just weeks ago, allowing them a better selection in the rookie
draft, then redrafted last week. He has been training with the squad, which breaks over Christmas until January 5. Glenn also hopes to begin TAFE studies mid year, possibly studying fitness or personal training.
