Balaklava High School principal tackles learning and social data

Mark Healy

Two local schools have received a funding boost following the release of individual school performance data on the new My School website. Balaklava high and primary schools will now be part of the Smarter Schools National Partnerships after the website identified them as being literacy and numeracy and low socio-economic status school communities. It was announced last week by Federal Education Minister and Dep-

uty Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, six schools would share $600,00 from the program. But high school principal, Mark Healy, is disappointed at the perception the school’s low literacy and numeracy results led to the funding announcement, believing the school had always been eligible because of its low socio-economic status. Several local schools had previously been announced as part of the program,

including Hamley Bridge Primary School, Clare Primary School, Owen Primary School, Riverton Primary School, Two Wells Primary School, Port Wakefield Primary School, Saddleworth Primary School, Virginia Primary School, Wasleys Primary School and Horizon Christian School. Mr Healy believes the school was previously incorrectly assessed for the Smarter Schools program, and its late addition could tarnish the school’s repu-

tation. He is angered at the perception the school’s literacy and numeracy results led to the allocation of funding. “Our school certainly needs to raise its literacy and numeracy results on the equivalent of five tests over three days in May,” Mr Healy said. “But our school is much, much more than that. “Our school is unfairly tarnished by this sort of statement.” n Continued Page 6 n Education, Pages 12 – 14.

Shamus gets a hand from Capper, the Roo – and mates

SHAMUS Liptrot is all smiles as he joins Mark Ricciuto and Anthony Lamond to thank them for their support.

An impressive $15,000 was raised in Balaklava last Friday evening for Halbury cyclist Shamus Liptrot, injured in a cycling race two years ago. The fundraiser, to help Shamus’s rehabilitation, was organised by former local Anthony “Capper” Lamond, and was a sell out show. Anthony was pleased with the evening’s success, with 240 people enjoying a dinner, ABC’s Mark Philipou interviewing Crows football legend Mark Ricciuto, and an hour of comedy. This was followed by an auction and a band. Anthony said he had heard plenty of positive feedback about the event, with a highlight being Shamus’s moving speech to thank the community for its help. “I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room,” Anthony said. Several local businesses contributed to the success by donating goods and time, including Marc’s Meats, Foodland, Warehouse Matrix, Balaklava Newsagency, Andrew Lane and the Balaklava Sports Club at the bar, Geoff Spence managing sound and lighting, and individuals who donated items to auction or volunteered to help serve on the night. Anthony thanked all those who helped in any way and said his mother Gaye was also a big help before the event. The Liptrot family – Shamus and his parents Patricia and Malcolm – thank everyone involved in an advertisement in today’s classified pages.

Uniting church groups co-ordinated “Pancake Day” fundraisers across the Plains for Shrove Tuesday, with Balaklava and Two Wells getting good support from residents. At Two Wells Primary school eager children lined up patiently to receive the yummy treats. Man on bail over Halbury shooting

n City of Playford issues breach of development notice:

VIRGINIA Nursery proprietor, Jim Gencheff, in the fruit and vegetable shop.

Virginia Nursery wrangle The operator of the Virginia Nursery has been asked to remedy several development breaches. City of Playford council contacted Jim Gencheff last month with a letter regarding alleged unlawful activities and breaches of the Development Act 1993. This included the continuing trade of the fruit and vegetable shop, which had no development approval or is contrary to existing approvals; selling pets and accessories without development approval; selling items other than garden accessories in the gift shop; the cafeteria/coffee shop trading outside the hours of operation of the retail nursery; and access to the

cafeteria/coffee shop being permitted directly from the carpark. In the letter provided to the Plains Producer by Mr Gencheff, council’s Team manager, planning and building, Rob Veitch, requested the breaches be remedied within 30 days of January 14, and said development applications needed to be received during this time if the operations were to continue. However, Mr Gencheff was told he had exhausted any possibility of obtaining approval for the fruit and vegetable shop and was required to cease its use and reinstate the area in accordance with the approved plans.

Mr Gencheff said he had initially hired a lawyer to lodge development plans and had expected the plans to be approved before he had been ready to begin trading. “I instructed him (the lawyer) back in October to submit a new proposal to council and I thought by the time I was ready to open it would be all through,” he said. Mr Gencheff said he had since “hired a new planner.” Essentially, Mr Gencheff said little had changed from the nursery’s previous operations, except it was now “better”. With water restrictions cutting into profits, Mr Gencheff said he

needed to diversify and expand to improve businesses and make the nursery a destination. “Virginia Nursery put Virginia on the map,” he said. Mr Gencheff said the expansions came from customer demand. “Our customers are travelling from far and wanted a coffee shop and something to eat,” he said. “To make the cafe pay we had to try to trade at night.” Mr Gencheff said Virginia Nursery was a family oriented place, where both children and adults could enjoy a visit. City of Playford declined to comment on the matter.

A Halbury man was allegedly shot in the early hours of Friday morning. It is believed two men were playing cards in Halbury when a rifle was produced and shots fired. The 61-year-old injured man was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment, but his injuries were not serious. Police arrested a 47-year-old man at 12.20am for allegedly recklessly causing harm to another with a firearm. The man, who has an address in both Semaphore Park and Halbury, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday, where he was remanded on bail to appear in court again in March. Further enquiries are being made in relation to breaches of the Firearms Act.

Now it’s cash for ‘green schools’ Five local schools are among 127 across the state to share in the $1 million Green Schools Grants program. The State government program supports schools and preschools to introduce water and energy saving initiatives. Brinkworth, Clare, and Mallala primary, Clare High School and Snowtown Area School will each receive $2000 for internal water upgrades. Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith said the goal of the program was to reduce the State’s ecological footprint and to educate students.

Libs target Maywald on regional funding The South Australian National Party has abandoned the people it claims to represent by criticising increased investment in regional communities by the State Liberals despite calls for a similar scheme, according to the Liberal Party. Shadow Minister for Regional Development, John Dawkins, said the SA Nationals had been calling on the Premier to establish a ‘Royalties for Regions’ scheme since 2008, but documents revealed under Freedom of Information showed the National Party leader and State government minister, Karlene Maywald, did not take a formal policy proposal

to Cabinet. Last October, State Liberals announced that if elected, they would invest 25 per cent of the state’s mining royalties into the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund established by the former Liberal government in 1999. The Budget’s Forward Estimates predict this would increase investment for regional infrastructure by an additional $45 million in the first year. Mr Dawkins said the National Party was now criticising the Liberals’ increased investment in regional areas. “Now as a National Party candidate,

Wilbur Klein is leading the charge in criticising the Liberals’ policy despite it being similar to the one he is touting,” Mr Dawkins said. “Current National party MP Karlene Maywald and the party’s president Jacky Abbott seem to share Mr Kleins case of amnesia. “This is the political party that says regional areas have been forgotten by the major parties but when the Liberals come out and back up our commitment to regional areas with actual money, they criticise it. “Instead, they should be banging on the doors of Mike Rann and Kevin Foley de-

lava

manding to know why they are not following the Liberals’ commitment to regional South Australia.” Mr Dawkins said Karlene Maywald had previously said she only took a Labor Cabinet position because it allowed her to get things done for regional SA. “Why then did she not take this policy position to Cabinet and why has she been unable to get the Rann Government to increase regional infrastructure funding?” he said. “It appears the only way regional South Australians will see any increase in infrastructure will be to vote for State Liberals.”

Even since leaving some of these, he has continued to provide his assistance and support to clubs and groups within the town. Recently, Terry has assisted the Little Athletics Club, the football and netball clubs, helped with repairs, maintenance and improvements to the Soldiers Memorial Hall, and was a key member of the group working on the sleeper replacement project on the footbridge that crosses the town’s tidal swimming pool. Adelaide Plains Road Safety Group Child Restraints Keeping your children safely restrained in motor vehicles New child restraint laws come into effect this year, including a mandatory, size-appropriate restraint system for all children up to the age of seven. This change will reduce the risk of injury caused by the use of unsuitable restraints for a child’s size. Why are the laws changing? • South Australia is adopting new, nationally approved changes to the Australian Road Rules. • Nearly 60 children under 12 years of age are killed or seriously injured on South Australian roads each year. More than a third of these casualties are just 7 years of age or younger. • Research also suggests that children are being moved into bigger seats – or are prematurely graduating to seatbelts – when this is not appropriate for their size. What will the new laws mean? The new laws will require children: • Up to the age of six months to be restrained in a rear facing child restraint (i.e. infant capsule); • From six months until the age of four to be restrained in either a rear or forward facing child restraint (i.e. child safety seat); • From four years until the age of seven to be restrained in either a forward facing child restraint or booster seat restrained by a correctly adjusted and fastened seatbelt or child safety harness; • Up to four years to be restrained in the rear of the vehicle (where the vehicle has two or more rows of seats); and • Aged between four and seven not to sit in the front seat, unless children under seven already occupy all other seat positions. Why do the laws refer to age instead of height or weight? Research indicates that regulations specifying child restraint usage by age rather than by height or weight will result in the smallest number of children being inappropriately restrained. The regulations will also be easier to understand and follow. Where can you find out more information? High school ‘tarnished’

• From Page 1 Mr Healy said it was disappointing not only for the school and its students, but also for the community, which had a strong sense of pride in its high school. Mr Healy said the literacy and numeracy results were only a snapshot of the school’s overall performance, based on tests of year nine students. The school’s year 12 results show a different story to the My School website, with plenty of successes in academic results, the number of students achieving their SACE, and the percentage going on to university, further study or employment. These results can be seen in the education feature on pages 12–14. “Kids are more than just this test, and that’s lost here,” Mr Healy said. “When you start looking at the outcomes at this school after students have been here for a significant period of time, they do well. “Every year we can be proud of our kids and community and what is achieved in partnership here at Balaklava High School.” As a former English teacher, Mr Healy said literacy and numeracy were vital for each students success. The school is aware it needs to improve these results. “We’re very upfront about those results and they are of concern,” Mr Healy said. “We have a range of strategies in place – one of those is training a person on site who will then look at working with teachers and students. “I welcome means that come in and address these issues, but at the present moment I’ve not had any indication of how this money is coming in and what it is to be spent on.” Questioned on the My School website which showed the school was in fact in the lower socioeconomic group, Mr Healy said: “We’ve been saying for years that State government’s index for disadvantage was wrong,” he said. “We are a damn good high school. “Can we be better? Absolutely. This provision of additional resources will be most welcome so that we can do better.” Mr Healy said he believed it was evident both Balaklava high and primary schools had been incorrectly assessed previously. Balaklava Primary School Principal, Dale Gathercole said the funding was a pleasant surprise. “We are very excited and pleased to have the support from the Federal government,” she said. “We could always use more resources,” “It’s great to have the recognition we’ve been looking for. We’re very pleased to have support around the area of numeracy and literacy.” WHAT THE PROGRAM TARGETS: Activities under the Smarter Schools National Partnerships proogram include: • Providing professional and financial support to teachers to take up three-year curriculum leadership positions in SA government schools through the Career Change program; • Creating a network of literacy partnership coaches and numeracy partnership coaches to work with classroom teachers in targeted primary schools, sharing and resources and working with teachers to plan teaching programs; • Expanding the innovative community action networks initiative to cater for low SES students across the state to include students in year six and seven who are at risk of disengaging from school. Hartley’s pomegranates have real potential:

HARTLEY Lewis with an early example of the fruit. He expects to harvest about 30 tonnes this year, with the yield of trees doubling as they become established.

The new boost juice

Three years from when Hartley Lewis first planted pomegranates at his Virginia market gardens, Lewis Horticulture is developing new ways of selling the fruit. Rather than selling the pomegranates whole, the arils (containing the juice) are separated in to recipe portions, or larger sizes for commercial use. Pomegranates grown at Virginia are being used to develop new markets, and nine months ago, Lewis Horticulture established an additional 130 hectares of pomegranates at Wanbi in the Mallee. A processing facility has also been established. “This production line process

removes the arils from the fruit and we package them in either individual size portions or recipe size portions, or larger ones for the food services area,” Mr Lewis said. “We’re also looking at juicing as well as another market opportunity and we will be juicing from the arils.” Overseas, juicing usually occurs from the whole fruit rather than just the arils. “By crushing the arils we get what’s a bit like a nice, red grapefruit juice, a bit sweet and sour, and very pleasing to the palate.” In addition, Lewis Horticulture is investigating potential markets for the remaining product, including the skins, through markets such

as pharmaceuticals. Mr Lewis said pomegranates were an alternative industry because of their durability in dry or poor water conditions. “The thing with pomegranates is they can be grown with poor quality water,” Mr Lewis said. “As long as the soil is well drained, they will grow in a wide range of conditions.” Mr Lewis believes pomegranates may be an option for grape growers looking to diversify. However, he said it wasn’t without its challenges. “In other countries they have access to low cost labour,” Mr Lewis said. “We’ve got to look at mechanising various processes or changing

Angle Vale will soon have its own public transport service following the calling of tenders. Local MP Tony Piccolo said tenders for the provision of “Dial-A- Ride” type services were released last week for the existing Gawler service and new services for Angle Vale and the John McViety Centre in Smithfield Plains. Mr Piccolo said he has been campaigning for the introduction of a public transport service for Angle Vale and for the John McViety Centre since he was first elected in 2006. “I am pleased the people of Angle Vale will finally have a sustainable public transport service,” Mr Piccolo said. The Angle Vale Dial-A-Ride will be a pre-booked service providing access between Angle Vale, Gawler, Munno Para Shopping Centre, Smithfield Interchange and the John McVeity Community Centre. “The service is designed to assist people within the township of Angle Vale to access services located in Gawler, Munno Para Shopping Centre and rail services from Smithfield Interchange,” Mr Piccolo said. Services to the John McVeity Community Centre aim to provide transport for communities in Angle Vale, Munno Para West, Andrews Farm and Daveron

Park to access activities held at the Centre. Mr Piccolo said all going well the new services should be operational before July this year. Mr Piccolo said he had worked with the local community and the Public Transport Division (PTD) of the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure. “PTD officers and my office have worked very hard to get this service developed to the point it is now a reality,” he said. “I wish to acknowledge the commitment of the Rann State Government through the PTD to improve the provision of public transport services within the region.” Mr Piccolo said his office staff had undertaken a great deal of research and community consultation to find a service that would meet an import need in the community and be financially sustainable. “We don’t want a repeat of previous failures,” Mr Piccolo said. “The Dial-A-Ride Service is flexible enough to meet the different needs of the local community but also affordable.” The tenders based on the successful Gawler Dial-A-Ride model close at 2pm on March 5 2010.

Veterans An educated life of Grace and music honoured OBITUARY ✞ by CFS PEOPLE ❖ Balaklava

BORN at Nurse O’Brien’s Cottage Hospital, Balaklava, on July 20 1911, Victoria Grace Anders lived a wholehearted life committed to Balaklava and the community. Commonly known by her middle name, Grace was educated at Balaklava Primary School and Balaklava High School, and was one of the first students from Balaklava to attend Teachers College, in 1929 and 1930. From an early age, Grace was interested in and studied music. At age 14, she sang in the local Methodist Church, thus beginning a lifelong active interest in choral work. She was involved in the choir and theatrical group at Teachers College, while she also took up the position of college ranger through involvement in the Guide Movement. Her teaching appointments throughout her career included Brighton, Cadell, Hindmarsh, Le Ferve Peninsula, Thebarton, Parooka, Brinkworth, and finally she returned to Balaklava in 1944. She taught at the primary school for 27 years until retirement. While in Adelaide, Grace involved herself in the Ladies Choir, which later formed into the Adelaide Philharmonic Choir. She served as secretary for two years and had the privilege of singing under the conductorship of several visiting celebrities. Grace used her musical talents during the war-time, playing the piano at the Cheer-Up Hut on Saturday nights for the soldiers. Often dubbed the custard-queen, she also helped out with cooking there. Her choir work continued

Back in Balaklava in July 1945, Grace was involved with forming the Balaklava Choral and Music Lovers Society. She was appointed leader of the music. She continued to be an active member of the Choral and Music Lovers society, until the group merged with the Balaklava Community Arts in 1982. In 1985, Grace received an Australian Day Citizen Award for services to music. She was honoured with life membership of the Balaklava Community Arts in 1992. Grace assisted with her piano playing at the CWA, RSL and Senior Citizens club, while also conducting the Methodist Choir

and performing organist duties. In 1995, Grace completed 50 years as conductor and organist for the Uniting Church. The history of Balaklava has also been an abiding interest for Grace, who wrote the history of the first 50 years of the Balaklava High School, researched the Balaklava Primary School Centenary Book and the chapters on the Balaklava Institute and all music and dancing activities for the “Change and Challenge” book. Grace slowed down physically, but continued to assist in all community events, as her mind was still “as

sharp as a tack.” She loved to potter in the garden, and fed the bantams everyday. Every bantam had a name – with Granny a favourite. In 2002, after her leg surgery, Grace entered Mill Court, and after the initial hesitation, she became fully immersed in the culture of the home, enjoying a wide variety of art, music and social activities. Apparently she told her friends at Mill Court some very interesting tales of mischief in her life, with the family now eagerly waiting to hear them. Grace passed away peacefully and with dignity at Mill Court on Friday February 5, 2010.

THE Country Fire Service heritage committee has started planning a major event to celebrate the efforts of volunteer firefighters and their valuable contribution to South Australian communities. The inaugural Veterans’Reunion, to be held in July this year, will pay tribute to former and present Emergency Fire Service / CFS volunteers and staff with at least 25 years’ of service. CFS Heritage committee chairman, Rex Hall, has described it as an ambitious but significant project to recognise the enthusiasm and commitment among South Australia’s most ardent volunteers. “Last year thousands of service medals were awarded to CFS members who had accumulated more than 10 years’ of active volunteer participation,” Mr Hall said. “Among those who were recognised for their work were five volunteers who had clocked up more than 60 years’of service and 90 volunteers who have been with the CFS for more than 50 years.” Mr Hall said the reunion is not only important to acknowledge volunteer contribution, but he hopes to inspire future generations of CFS volunteers. The veterans’reunion will be open to all past and present CFS members and their friends and families, to be held on Saturday July 31 and Sunday August 1. The venue has yet to be determined. For more information contact Rex Hall on 0417 081 560 or email gadang@rbm.com.au

With your input, we will develop a practical planning strategy to guide the future sustainability of these three townships. There is a need to ensure that appropriate infrastructure and services are available to residents.

The future development of Virginia, Angle Vale and One Tree Hill is of critical community interest. Your views will be taken into account in developing the master plan for these townships. Council isn’t the only one making the decision. We need your input. Have your say and work with us to design the future of your township!

The design charrettes are a hands-on public workshop bringing together people from various backgrounds (community members, designers and project staff ) to explore design options for Virginia, Angle Vale and One Tree Hill. They are a fun and innovative way for community ideas to be generated while designers sketch to capture these ideas to express the values and vision of the community.

Diverse learning pathways lead students to success B

alaklava High School provides a safe, dynamic and challenging educational environment that equips students to meet the challenges of the future. A comprehensive curriculum allows students the opportunity to experience success in many fields of endeavour. Curriculum diversity is highly valued by students, parents and staff at Balaklava High School. In Years 11 and 12 students are equally divided in choosing between academic and vocational pathways and through the school’s commitment to providing learning programs that genuinely meet student needs, Balaklava High School has an outstanding student retention rate. Students choosing a university pathway do so in the knowledge they can study the subjects they need to gain entry to their course of choice. Small classes, quality face-to-face teaching and a supportive environment give them every opportunity to succeed. A proud tradition of successful academic achievement is a hallmark of the school with many students each year gaining outstanding Year 12 results and securing places in universities and other tertiary institutions. This again proved to be so in 2009 with students; Jane Harding attaining a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of 95.7, Luke Halliday 93.95, Emily Playford 91.05, and Fiona Burford 87.6. In all 28.7 per cent of Year 12 students eligible for a TER scored 80 or above. In addition, five students attained six Outstanding Achievements in Year 12 Community Studies – Shamus Liptrot (2), Angus Bugeja, Trent Chadbourne, Gemma Deakin and Kyle Allen. Outstanding achievements for these fine students. The 2009 school year also saw 93 per cent of Balaklava High School students successfully complete their SACE, 98 per cent of students receive first round tertiary offers in such courses as; Pharmacy, Law, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Education, Nursing and a broad range of others, and with 65.5 per cent of Year 12 grades being As and Bs, a figure 10 per cent higher than the State average. These are certainly excellent outcomes, demonstrating able and motivated students, fine educational programs and quality teachers. Balaklava High School is clearly a place where students have the opportunity to excel and, as a result, gain entry into a very diverse range of career options. Excellent academic achievement is enhanced for our students by the country bonus points offered by the universities. Learning

BALAKLAVA HIGH SCHOOL By Principal, Mark Healy opportunities will be further enhanced in Science with the development of the new $1.97 million Science complex which will be completed this year. The vocational pathways programs are an outstanding success story and Balaklava High School is recognised as among the best in the state. In 2009 Gemma Deakin won the Adelaide Plains VET Student of the Year Award, and she was also the category winner for Equestrian Studies. Further VET Category winners were Joe Pratt for Agriculture and Brad Michael for Construction. Students in the vocational program train in industry and gain formal training in TAFE and other expert organisations outside the school. Students can choose from a number of industries. The “hands-on” building wood and engineering courses are providing a strong foundation for careers in trades that have a looming skills shortage. Students can gain nationally accredited

Major upgrades to facilities are taking place at Balaklava Community Children’s Centre. The verandah has been replaced and enlarged with plastic blinds installed. A fenced area is now available for children to do woodwork etc or for babies to play in a secure area etc. The admin area has also been enlarged and upgraded in this project. Plans have been drawn up for the block next to BCCC. The car park is currently under construction with a new access to the centre planned from this area. The next improvement for this block will be the formation of an area for basketball and games for school aged children. Proudly displayed in the foyer of Balaklava Primary School are nine Honour Rolls celebrating High Academic Achievement by scholars in 2009. In 2006, inspired by the schools existing Honour Roll 1927-1952, students suggested a reinstatement of this time honoured tradition. Students in Years 1 to 7 who achieve above average in their mid and/or end of year reports have their names recorded on the Learning Area Honour Rolls which are then displayed in the foyer the following academic year. For 2009, 64 students are listed on the Design and Technology Honour Roll, 65 for English, 77 for Health and PE, 52 for Indonesian, 63 for Mathematics, 126 for Music, 54 for Science, 73 for Society & Environment and 96 for Visual Arts. Balaklava Primary School students paid tribute to respected teacher, the late Miss Grace Anders, at an assembly on Monday, February 8. After negotiation with the family, the next day Balaklava Primary School students formed an honour guard to bid farewell to Miss Anders as her funeral procession passed the school with which she was so proud to be associated. Attending the community

school as a student from 1916 to 1923, Miss Anders later returned as a teacher, serving for 27 years and becoming an avid music teacher. As part of Balaklava primary’s Centenary of Federation celebrations in 2001, Miss Anders presented each student with a commemorative medallion to mark the occasion and collaborated with the current principal, Mrs Dale Gathercole, to document a brief

history of the school which was published in the local history book: Stories Behind the Wall. In 2002, Miss Anders again worked closely with Mrs Gathercole to update the school’s history book to celebrate the school’s 125th birthday. Thank you Miss Anders for your contribution to education – you have impacted many lives and left your legacy- learning truly is a life long pursuit.

PEOPLE v Balaklava Liam and Jason swap jobs, homes and lifestyles to become:

Canadian cobbers W LIAM Whitwell takes in the sights around Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

HILE Balaklava teacher Liam Whitwell settles into Canadian temperatures as low as –34C, Jason Kawa is enjoying the warm South Australian summer, as the pair come to terms with their new homes for the next six months. Liam and Jason have swapped houses, jobs, cars and lifestyles through a teacher exchange program, making Jason the PE teacher at Balaklava High. Liam is teaching PE in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in Canada’s mid-South. On January 3, Jason, his wife, Julie, and two young children, Ben, aged three, and Avery, eight months, arrived in Australia. Reasoning behind such a big move was due to a love of travelling and seeing new places. “We thought it would be nice to go somewhere we wouldn’t normally travel to,” Jason said. “Australia is a diverse country, and there is relatively no language barrier,” he said “Not that there isn’t one,” explaining bathers are called trunks and freestyle swimming is known as “front crawl” Bronte Hewett & Lauren Parker report in Canada. However, trading places does not mean learn some new sports. “I tion teachers were notiJason will captain the really want to try Austral- fied of the opportunity. He left Australia on New Years Day, arriving on New Years Day in Canada and having his first day in the classroom on January 4. He expects to arrive back in Australia in mid July, when the Mallala Magpies (but not necessarily other teams) will doubtless welcome him back to the APFL season. Saskatoon, a city of about 250,000 in the centre of Canada, is vastly different to South Australia. “It’s a larger city, different sports,” Liam said. And with the temperature ranging from -1 to -34 while he has been there, it is a big change from Australia’s hot summers.

JASON Kawa relaxes in Balaklava with his family, wife Julie Ben and Avery and (BELOW) tries his hand at bouncing an Aussie rules football.

But there are similarities too, according to Liam, including friendly people, the social scene, and the focus on sport. The school is all under one roof because of the extreme temperatures, and in terms of school facilities, Liam said some were better, others were worse. The school structure is a bit of a challenge for Liam, as is getting to know the students – and for the students, understanding his Aussie accent. Then there are the

challenges of driving in snow and ice, and on the wrong side of the road, and developing a new network of friends. “They’re all good challenges though, and I’m really enjoying it,” Liam said. The challenge is just part of the appeal of the exchange, with Liam saying he also enjoyed the friendly people, the skiing and the environment. “Everything is exciting, new, different and enjoyable but at the same time challenging,” he said.

Sue Friedrichs with a sample of the delightful meals available to diners at Balaklava’s Royal Hotel.

‘Let’s do lunch’ gets fresh new flavours

A

new, cafe style lunch menu will soon be introduced at Balaklava’s Royal Hotel. The hotel is renowned for its tasty meals and is a popular venue for both lunch and dinner. Now, Peter, Sue and Derek Friedrichs are introducing changes to make the hotel even more convenient for its diners. Derek said the new lunch menu would feature lighter and more home-style meals such as burgers, quiches and other home-made treats. Those on a tight time-line are welcome to phone ahead and order their meal to be ready to dine in or take away when it’s convenient for them. Next month, some changes will be made to the regular hotel menu in preparation for cooling weather. The Royal Hotel changes its menu each season, ensuring there’s always something to tempt diners. Favourites include the Royal’s surf and turf – a scotch fillet topped with Coopers Ale battered fish, black tiger prawns, tender squid and creamy garlic hollandaise, or the salt, pepper and lime squid served with garden salad and aioli.

Delight your taste buds!

Open: Mon-Fri 6.30am - 5pm & Sat 7am - 12.30pm

Balaklava Bakery 32 George St, Balaklava

There’s plenty of other seafood choices on offer, including the Royal’s ocean basket and sweet and sour barramundi, and the menu also features the classic favourites of chicken and beef schnitzels with an array of sauces. The cripsy skinned chicken breast in a tangy asian marinade on roasted chat potatoes and topped with asparagus, prawns and hollandaise sauce is another favourite, while the tandoori chicken salad offers a lighter option. The kids corner features all the regular children’s favourites, and vegetarian options are also available. On Thursday nights, patrons can enjoy schnitzel night and have a beef or chicken schnitzel for less than $10, with half price toppings. Sunday roast is another popular option, with the roast of the day available each Sunday for $8.50.

Catering available In addition to offering diners a dine-in or take-away menu, the Royal Hotel is available for outside catering. • For more information or to book a table, phone 8862 1607.

special feature v Balaklava Racing Club

Cup leads everyone to a barrel of fun Big day for the young at heart Balaklava Racing Club is pitching for a different crowd in their next meeting – the Adelaide Plains Cup, on Sunday, February 28. Racing Club CEO, Doug Hall, said organisers were hoping for a crowd of young people, similar to crowds who generally attend the Clare Easter races. Typically the crowd will be out for a good day, with Balaklava Racing Club offering good facilities, fun events, atmosphere and of course horse racing. Events during the day include keg rolling and, new in 2010, stubby rolling. For those unfamiliar with these sports, it is well worth a look. Keg rolling is a team sport where contestants roll a keg down the track in a relay style race. The stubby roll has a bit of a twist, with one team member volunteering to roll inside a giant stubby. There will be teams of six vying for the prizes of Coopers Pale Ale cartons. Teams are still being sought. Anyone can enter, and there must be two girls on each team. While the Adelaide Plains Festival is in recess this year, the Adelaide Plains Cup remains yearly and aims to attract a

mix of both locals and visitors. “Hopefully the community and visitors will be represented at the event,” Doug said. It’s also an opportunity to let people know what is happening at the racing club in 2010. “It’s a day to launch our year,” he said. And a day to show off the track. With no racing since December, Balaklava Racing Club has been busy keeping up with track maintenance, and plenty of extra watering has paid off. “It’s the best I’ve seen the race track in a long time,” Doug said. Enjoy a picnic trackside, or on course catering, while the kids are entertained by jumping castles, party rides and face painting. As weather plays a big role in the success of outdoor events, with all things positive, Doug hopes for a turnout of about 2000–2500 people. “Most people will make their mind up last minute, when they know the weather,” Doug said.

There will be public marquees provided for shade, and private marquees for those who request them. So whatever the weather, there will be plenty of shelter if there is rain or shine. n Balaklava’s Terminus Hotel team will be out to regain the keg roll title. Winners in 2007 and 2008, they were narrowly beaten last year. Pictured (from left) are Matt Angel, Jake Baldwin-Smith and Clare Haynes, with Clare showing her style in last year’s event.

Twenty six pairs entered in the competition, with lots of thought going into costumes, which added to the fun, creating lots of colour and atmosphere for the spectators lining ‘the hill’. Three minor rounds were predrawn, with scoreboard attendant Gary Wilson being kept busy with the leaderboard. MC for the night, Geoff Gardner, kept everyone on their toes and made sure play flowed on consistently.

By Louise Michael Rounds one, two and three split the pros from the hacks, but there were many tiebreakers, and with competition fierce, some players – such as Andrew Lane – started to taunt their opposition (Martyn Bell) to try to hit them, which of course was too good an opportunity to miss! However, Martyn accidentally misfired and Andrew’s wife Meriel copped it in the cheek! Court two action was brought to everyone’s notice by the MC due to

WINNERS Steffi Graf (Jonathon Brice) and husband Andre Agassi (Derek Friedrichs).

WANG Wang and Funi (Marie and Mark Heaslip) made an appearance at the Bash for cash. BI and B2, Ian and Trish Langdon.

the vast array of colour, with the very round TweedlleDum and TweedleDee (aka Suzy McDonald and Fran Henderson) attempting to run in very big fatcat shoes, playing against Batman and Robin (aka Colin Mutton and Scott Michael), who did at least have sneakers on! This was a spectacle for the crowd hoping the round ones wouldn’t fall over. Mark Loy and Ped Allen, being the Valentines Devils, had glow-in-thedark horns, which did at least allow their opponents to find them! Pandas Wang Wang and Funi, being Mark and Marie Heaslip, won first prize for their costumes, which did get interesting later when Mark changed out of his costume. He tried to put his shorts on, only to find they were Marie’s! That was very Wong Wong! We didn’t recognise Chris and Kimberley Brownlie, who looked excellent as Fred and Wilma Flinstone! Their tennis wasn’t too bad either! Ley Ley and Bec made an appearance by Martin and Sheralyn Bond, while Pauline Hill had the grunting going as Anna Kournikova! Ian and Trish Langdon were B1 and B2, with daughter Amy being B3! Charlie’s Angels came out of retirement, although they probably should’ve stayed there, but Joy Ryan, Carolyn Mutton, Kevyna Gardner and myself, along with Bosley Dean Robinson, looked very colourful complete with their wings! Club President Darren Scholz and the local postmaster, Ray Koch, looked hilarious as the Grumpy Old Men, while Andy Michael, suffering from chaffing, and Hayden Battle, suffering from cricket, looked dashing as the Blues Brothers, I think! To fit in with the Valentines theme, Tania Allen and Shaz Pike were the Women in Black, with red love hearts stuck all over, which looked very pretty! We were privileged to have Andre Agassi (Derek Friedrichs) complete with bling and bald head, and wife Steffi Graf (Jonathon Brice) grace us with their very strong presence. After three rounds, the pack was reduced to the top eight, with the Pandas, Devils, Batman and Robin, Andre and Steffi, Phil and Helen Barry, Jeremy and Emmalee Lomman, Rick and Shelley Lamond, Scott McDonald

BATMAN and Robin (aka Colin Mutton and Scott Michael) made it into the top eight.

(another Ley Ley) and Pauline, facing off in tiebreakers. The Barry’s, Lamonds, Andre and Steffi and Scott and Pauline made it through for yet another tiebreaker. The grand finalists ended up being Andre and Steffi against the Barry’s, playing this time, a super tiebreaker to 10. In a tight one, Andre and Steffi took the honours and the cash! Well done to all players, and thanks to Julia Hoskin and Sally Lokan for playing to even the number of pairs! Thanks also to Scholzy and Ben Michael for selling spinning wheel tickets during the night, and Gus and Gards for keeping the show rolling. Thanks to Narelle,Angela, Mick, Jock, Gay, Tania, the creche girls and the rest of the committee for preparing food, manning the barbie, bar, and organising everything else! A big thankyou to the players and spectators for supporting our fundraiser, with Heidi Zerk heard saying it should be on every year! Until next time, maybe in a year or two...

RETIRED Charlie’s Angel Joy Ryan hams it up for the camera.

GRUMPY Old Men, Ray Koch and Darren Sholz congratulate each other on a win.

RETIRED Charlie’s Angel Louise Michael serves it up.

Balaklava Reports The top placed Balaklava senior side were eagerly awaiting their home match against second placed Blyth on Saturday, in what was expected to be a thriller, and the result didn’t disappoint. The home side started well, winning four of the six mixed doubles, including a dakdropper win to Andy Michael and Shelley Lamond. Andrew Holland had waxed as he had to sport a skirt as he filled in at number four lady, and with partner, the very hairy Scott McDonald, were unlucky to lose a long 7-5. The ladies singles saw a big slide in favour of Blyth 5-1. The only Balaklava lady to win was Angela Battle, playing the party girl Denby Wandel! With top lady Melissa Moulds out, Helen Barry moved to top, but had to drop the briefs to the Blyth starlet Amanda O’Shaunessy. The dames of tennis, Pauline Hill and Janet Zweck tested each other out, but the latter won a hard fought 6-3. The mens singles saw some lop-sided scores with Andy M and Don Veitch both winning dakdroppers, whilst young Scott had to drop his! Top man Derek ‘Andre’ Friedrichs was absolutely pumped after his excellent 6-4 win over Shayne Jeisman, as last time they met, he’d had to drop his daks! A big turnaround Freddo - well done! Phil Barry had an identical win in a tough set, whilst Rick Lamond couldn’t quite get over the line. Sets were locked at nine apiece heading into the straight doubles with both sides tensing up. Blyth swapped their ladies around with the very experienced Janet dropping down to the middle ‘ladies’, a term used very loosely here for her opponents Andrew H, but not for partner Shaz Pike, who had their work cut out, and ended up coming a valiant second! Angela had been on fire in her previous two sets, but with Shelley, lost a marathon 6-4. The top men’s doubles was a slogfest with the visitors taking the honours there. However the Balaklava bottom two pairs had comfortable wins, with Scott happy he could hold his head up after the last set with Phil! Andy and Don were all over the court and net and tramlines and outplayed their opponents and didn’t drop a game! So, if you’ve done your sums, you’ll see the Blyth side was up 12-11 with the top ladies still playing - noting the home ladies both lost relatively easily in their singles. But the old girls pulled out all stops and never gave up, to have a huge upset 6-4 win, making it 12 sets all, The calculators were out and showed the home side had scraped through to win by a measly three games! Well done to three set winners Phil, Don, who only dropped three games for the day, and Andy M, who didn’t drop a game for the whole day! But

Andy’s wins came at a cost, as, by the end of tennis and then the Bash for Cash, he was suffering severe chaffing and could hardly walk! Naz had the ice and the creams out with Andy requiring some medical assistance! Well done to the team on a nailbiting win! Final score Balaklava 12-98 defeated a gallant Blyth 12-95. Until next week when the team heads off for the long road trip to the social hub of Hilltown, with Andrew Lane sure to be available to play......

balaklava night

Another perfect night greeted the nighters as they start the race for the final, with the pressure mounting as there were come big upsets! Bec Houston’s top placed Setters got the big heave-ho from bottom placed Chris Allen’s Greyhounds in the biggest upset of the night, winning 3-27 to 3-21. Captain Chris and Lorraine Jenner started out very well, winning comfortably over Captain Bec H and Peter Rohrlach, which ultimately would give them the extra games to win - not that they knew that at the time! Greyhounds Fran Henderson and fill-in Gavin Harding came a close 5-3 to Jarek Flight and Kevyna Gardner. The middle two sets saw another 5-3 win to the Setters but a 6-2 to the Greyhounds - more games to us they thought! The final two sets went 6-2 one apiece and the Greyhounds were seen doing laps of honour around their court after their win, with Lorraine deciding she likes tennis after all! Apparently Gavin was suffering the next day and could hardly move after his stellar effort. Well done Greyhounds, you’re on a roll! The other division two match saw Suzy McDonald’s Whippets scrape through to defeat the absent Diane Gregor’s Dalmatians 4-29 to 2-21. The Whippets had gun Jane Harding filling in but didn’t bank on having Angela Battle filling in for the opposition, so the scoresheet was written up so they ended up playing each other all night. Suzy and Jane’s first set was an ‘acca dakka’ win to them over Dylan Smith and Angela, with Dylan not too happy about having to reveal the briefs to the girls! Chris Brownlie, the only original Dalmatian playing, and Carly Gregor, had an excellent win over Nicole Parker and Shaun Northcott, but both of the latter got their revenge in their next sets! Shaun and Suzy won a very tight tiebreaker over Dylan and Carly, whilst Nicole and Jane won 5-3. Keeping in line with that score, Chris and partner Dylan, came second in yet another 5-3, whilst Angela and partner Carly, finally pipped Jane and Shaun to win a last set tiebreaker. A good match overall - we won’t mention that dakdropper again! The only one-sided Div 1 match saw Andrew Lane’s Boxers defeat Pauline Hill’s Pugs in a horrible scoreline 6-38 to 0-10. Funnily enough there was only one dakdropper in this match but two 7-1s and a 6-2 didn’t help! The Boxers were very ably assisted by super fill-in Don Veitch, which didn’t please his opponent Geoff Gardner very much. Andrew was sitting back smugly letting Don slice and smash shots everywhere, which inspired the Boxers ladies, another super fill-in Lisa Redpath, and regular Helen Durdin, who lifted in response! The result was a powerhouse display of tennis, which probably won’t be seen next week, but that doesn’t help the Pugs! Tania Allen did the best of the Pugs, coming second in two 5-3s, one each with Pauline and Robert Lloyd. Robert is hoping his form slump will improve very quickly and showed flashes of his former brilliance. Not much more we can say about this one other than bad luck Pugs - maybe next week! Joy Ryan’s Beagles caused an upset by defeating top team, Scott McDonald’s Terriers 3-28 to 3-22. This match was treated like a grand final, with all bar one set being a 5-4 or 5-3. Beagles Chris Curnow and Joy were on a mission, having a very big win over Scott and Tammy Durdin, whilst Nick Durdin and Leonie Selleck won a thrilling tiebreaker over Darren Scholz and Tanya Greenshields. Tanya redeemed herself, through gritted teeth, to win a 5-3 with Chris, but would you believe Darren and partner Joy lost yet another tiebreaker! With the Beagles leading by just two games heading into the last two sets, Joy pumped up the team, and they responded. Tanya and Joy played like possessed women having a huge 7-1 win over Tammy and Leonie, who were later berated by Scott! Scott and Nick kept their end of the bargain winning another close 5-3 slogfest but it wasn’t enough! An excellent high quality game worthy of a grand final!! We will have to see about that one as the last few weeks unfold! The final Div 1 match saw Marty Brice’s Mastiffs scrape through by the smallest of margins, 3-25 to 3-24 to defeat Paul McBride’s Poodles. Nice to see Paul back after his calf injury and he was playing nice and steadily and trying not to chase balls too much. Luckily for him he has fairly mobile partners! Poodles Gary Wilson and Julia Hoskin showed their younger opponents just how it’s done, winning a tiebreaker over Adam Pratt and Di Taylor. Once again, Adam was surprised by how good some older people are! Marty and Cherie Cmrlec, who was distracted, couldn’t get it together as Paul and Helen Barry played consistently well to win. However the Mastiffs got a severe talking to by Marty, and turned around to win the next two sets in identical 5-3s! Marty, by the way, has a new tennis outfit, a Christmas gift from his mother in law, and being as it resembles a muscle shirt, is quite distracting for his female opponents (and partners) as his bulging muscles ripple through his shirt. This is causing quite a stir and may have to be banned for being too risque! Anyway, see, I’ve been distracted already, back to the tennis, and the final two sets saw Adam and Marty have a comfortable win over Gary and Paul, whilst Helen and Julia had to work hard for a 5-3 win over Cherie and Di. But the mental calculator in Marty’s head had worked out the required number of games to win, which now puts the Mastiffs level with the Poodles on the premiership table! (and the Boxers!) Well done! Looks like another hot week coming up, not just in the weather but on the courts, with the finals pressure mounting.....

Hamley Bridge overpowers Riverton in Division One

PADDy Williams, Port Wakefield Gold points out his team’s bowls during the division two match at home on Saturday.

Once again, perfect weather accommodated bowlers last weekend as the minor round quickly nears its end. The feature match in Division One saw leaders Hamley Bridge overcome the challenge put up by Riverton to take the match by fifteen shots. With Balaklava’s win over Port Wakefield, the final four is now set. The only permutation still left unresolved is the final order within the top four. Owen’s win over Wasleys in the final match has given Owen some more breathing space in second position with two matches left to play. Mallala had the bye for the round. Division One is in recess this Saturday as the Wooroora Championships in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours will be contested. Division One: 13 February 2010 – Balaklava 84(12) (B. Taylor 30, P. Thompson 28, T. Clifford 26) def. Port Wakefield 54(0) (R. McQuire 18, G. McPharlin 19, R. Murphy 17); Owen 94(10) (N. Harkness 22, B. Parker 39, G. Harkness 33) def. Wasleys 69(2) (D. Olive 35, R. Bowman 18, L. Ryan 16); Hamley Bridge 86(10) (D. Rex 28, A. O’Brien 29, B. Smith 29) def. Riverton 71(2) (M. Griffiths 25, N. Rogers 16, B. Mullins 30). Division One Standings – Hamley Bridge 140(250); Owen 114(129); Riverton 96(101); Balaklava 92(113); Mallala 62(-147); Port Wakefield 61(-152); Wasleys 37(-284). Ross Rhode, Tarlee looks down the green.

Balaklava Red downs Two Red leader Division Two Red leader, Riverton White, suffered a loss at the hands of Balaklava Red last weekend. This result sees the gap at the top of the standings significantly narrower. Second placed Port Wakefield Blue moved within one point of the lead following their victory over Tarlee. Hamley Red stays in third spot after their win over sister side Hamley White while Owen sits in fourth position after accounting for Balaklava White. Fourteen points is now the gap between fourth and fifth spots with only five points separating the bottom four sides in Two Red. Whether any of these lower sides will be in a position to claim a final’s spot will hinge on the matches still to play in the last three rounds. The feature match this weekend will see Port Wakefield Blue host Hamley Red; sides sitting second and third, respectively in the standings. As their previous match was cancelled due to heat, only overall season form can be used as a guide, which is slightly in the favour of Port Wakefield Blue. Hamley White has an important match against Owen – a match they must win to reduce the points gap between itself and its opponent sitting in fourth spot. This is the first time these two sides have met this season and since the match is at Owen, the home side should be favoured to win. Tarlee and Balaklava Red meet in another match where one side’s season will almost certainly be over. The final match will see Riverton White host Balaklava White. Each side lost last weekend and both will be keen to make amends in this clash. Riverton White also will be keen to reverse the drubbing it received at the hands of Balaklava White in the previous match they played. Division Two Red: February13 – Hamley Red 87(12) (J. Tily 30, G. Schilling 31, J. Bell 26) def. Hamley White 48(0) (L. Stott 12, B. Morris 20, A. Fyfe 16); Owen 88(12) (I. Freebairn 29, L. Beaty 28, P. Sullivan 31) def. Balaklava White 56(0) (J. Wooroora championships played this weekend Division One has a break from pennant competition this weekend as it contests the Wooroora Championships, proudly sponsored by The Plains Producer. Sunday February 21 is designated as the Reserve Day should weather become a factor the previous day. Championships in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours will be held with Hamley Bridge hosting Singles and Pairs, Mallala Triples, and Balaklava Fours. Tarlee will play in the Singles Championship only. Play in each Championship commences at 9.30am, and will consist of sectional play with the two sectional winners playing off in a final for the respective Championship. Singles Championship Sectional play of three games – 21 up, followed by final – 25 up. Section 1 – Wasleys, Balaklava, Mallala, Hamley Bridge. Section 2 – Port Wakefield, Owen, Riverton, Tarlee. Pairs Championship Sectional play of three games of 10 ends

(2x2x2x2 bowls), followed by final also of 10 ends. Section 1 – Riverton, Mallala, Owen, Port Wakefield. Section 2 – Hamley Bridge, Balaklava, Bye, Wasleys. Triples Championship Sectional play of three games of 10 ends (3x3x3 bowls), followed by final also of 10 ends. Section 1 – Hamley Bridge, Balaklava, Mallala, Owen. Section 2 – Bye, Wasleys, Port Wakefield, Riverton. Fours Championship Sectional play of three games of 10 ends, followed by final also of 10 ends. Section 1 – Port Wakefield, Wasleys, Balaklava, Bye. Section 2 – Owen, Hamley Bridge, Riverton, Mallala. Presentation of Association Perpetual Trophies and The Plains Producer individual trophies to the respective winners will be conducted on grand final day, Saturday March 27.

All of the top three sides in Two White recorded wins against their respective opponents last weekend. Mallala Black is guaranteed a final’s spot while Mallala White and Balaklava Blue are perhaps no more than one win away of achieving that same goal. Presently sitting in fourth spot, only seven points ahead of Riverton Black, Port Wakefield Gold’s match against leaders Mallala Black is an important one if it wishes to remain ahead of their main challenger. However, season form suggests that Mallala Black may prove too strong for their hosts. For Riverton Black to contest the Two White finals, a win against third placed Balaklava Blue is also paramount. Riverton Black has caused the odd upset during the season but will they be able to cause another

upset on this occasion? Division Two White: February 13 – Balaklava Blue 63(10) (K. Harkness 22, R. Barr 17, R. McPharlin 24) def. Wasleys 59(2) (J. McDonnell 20, S. Edlington 24, S. Wendland 15); Mallala White 87(10) (B. Hill 36, J. Curnow 29, G. Forrest 22) def. Port Wakefield Gold 58(2) (A. Carslake 16, T. Jones 17, T. Sharman 25); Mallala Black 68(10) (M. King 17, G. Donlon 27, K. McDonald 24) def. Riverton Black 63(2) (R. Schulz 26, B. Prime 17, P. Gates 20). Division Two White Standings – Mallala Black 116(153); Mallala White 100(-29); Balaklava Blue 96(-9); Port Wakefield Gold 76(-62); Riverton Black 69(-112); Wasleys 58(-284). Division Two White: February 20 – Wasleys vs Mallala White, Riverton Black vs Balaklava Blue, Port Wakefield Gold vs Mallala Black.

Football gears up for APFL season 2010 • From back page While Rian acknowledges the hard work ahead, he said recruiting people with heart for the club has been an important part of his plan. “Out of all the footy clubs in the league, we probably need to work the hardest,” he said. “We focused on getting locals back to the club.” The club has been getting a bigger turn out to training then previous pre-seasons, and has three trial matches in the coming weeks. A number of community events are in line for the club as well. “We look forward to round one,” Rian said. Ian Gregory will coach the Hamley Bridge B grade, while Harry Frankon has the senior colts and Paul Sparrow the junior colts. Hummocks Watchman Eagles A grade team remain under the watchful eye of Mark Brandt, while Anthony Platt will again lead the B grade side. Senior colts will this year be coached by Rob Lawson, and Rob Studham takes on the junior colts. Two Wells’ new B grade coach is Peter McMillan and the new assistant A grade coach is Mark Thomson. Peter came from Central Districts Football Club and took over from Troy Trevorton. Mark had experience as A grade coach of Blyth/Snowtown for four years.

Young Guns, Redlegs finals contenders The split of the men’s division had an impact. In division one the games were close and exciting. What became obvious to Dribbler was the importance of the whole team and the depth of ability. Young Guns and Redlegs won their games and now appear to be the grand final contenders because of the scoring power of the team – not just their main players. Players like Nicholas Jericho, Thomas Rowe and Ben Shepherd made the difference for the Redlegs. Scoring a goal may not

seem to matter when you have one or two players who can score plenty, but it does. Young Guns’ Kym Simon and Aaron Williams will make the difference, as they did in their comprehensive win over Sonics. The men’s division two was a blowout, with Meercats and Swaggies revealing that they will be the teams to watch.

Jamie McArdle has finally shown that he can be a match winner, while Paul Sharer’s talent was again on display. The women’s divison also showed the importance of the support players. The teams that won had more players scoring and not just one or two key players getting all of the points. It was probably the umpires that brought about the Hamley girls going down to Lightning, but the Lightning ladies were certainly strong when it counted. Lauren Michael showed some moves most

players would be proud of. Their all-round team play made the difference. Dribbler reckons they had a number of good players not playing and, if so, they will be the team to beat. I still fancy Hamley, but Kate Smith and Alison Scahinger need to combine and make their presence felt on the score board as well. Hamley have great defence – they made it hard for the likes of Alexandra Wilson and Alex Simon, but it is scores that win games. Long Plains as usual are finishing well, and the division one girls used their defensive strategies to their advantage and closed out any hope of Owen making the finals. Jessica Robertson put in a good game. It will be play-

ers like her, as Dribbler has noticed, that will make the difference come finals. Once again it could be the umpires, but Redlegs were outclassed by Bulldogs. Teagan Nottle and Nikole Healey combined well but it was an all-round team game that made the difference. There were a number of youngsters needing ice and other first aid. I don’t think the weather was the reason. Players need to be prepared and to play according to the conditions. Accidents will happen – and often when you are trying hard. Dribbler often makes the mistake of thinking teams that lose don’t try hard enough. Owen and Long Plains had plenty of triers in division one girls, but

their opponents were just that much better. Renee and Kate have both had outstanding years and just seem to get better each week. Dribbler tells me that a development squad or practice is being set up to help player’s realise their potential. He wasn’t very clear but he tells me Michelle Tiller knows all about it. Tom Munzer, Sean Speissegger, Tyler Moulds and Samuel Carslake are some division four boys who Dribbler thinks ought to attend. There are others, especially in the girl’s division. The Pacers in division two girls certainly set the pace. Ciara Guy top scored with an amazing 28. Her team mates Carly Williams and Aleisha

Michael also scored well. Dribbler prefers a match with lots of scoring. Tenayah Renshaw was in the groove of Friday who, along with Tenneal White, gave Dribbler something to get excited about. Brittany Koch, Shauni Tiller and Chelsea McPharlin were the ones for the Suns while their opponents tried hard. The finals begin at the end of the month, so there is not much time for teams to work out how they need to change. It has been said that it is a fool who keeps on doing the same things and expecting different results. Hopefully no fools are playing basketball and we see a few changes in these last games to bring about different results. See you at the games.

Held at the State Shooting Park, Virginia, the event was a big success and boasted about 150 shooters from all over South Australia and interstate. Angus, 13, was selected in the State Postal Team and named a second reserve for the State Junior Team, after just getting beaten in a shoot off after shooting an equal top score of 69/75, with Aaron Zupanic. Over the three day carnival, Angus won the B-grade 25 Pair State Double Rise Championship on day one, and was also the junior winner of the 50 Target State

Balaklava Men

The old golf caper continues to draw handsome fields to both the Thursday night chook events and our Saturday competitions. Last weekend we again numbered 35, for a Stableford round with those A Grade gentlemen evermore numerous. Of those so numerous, the one most luminous was “Rampaging” Robert Hart, who led them in with a very bright 46 points. Wayne “Scorched Seaweed” Nagle (45) saw off the tyro, Tate Michael (41), to round out the podium positions. Those resigned to life at ground level were W. Parkin (39), D. Hannaford (37), M. Hameister (36), P. Lamont (36), I. Michael (36), R. Butterworth (36), M. Loy (36), M. Smith (yawn!) (36), L. Durdin (334), G. McKenzie (32), Patricia Anderson (30), D. Taylor (28) and the mighty Emu, G. Ackland (26). It was hard, gritty and a tad gruesome over in the B Grade battleground, but that son of the soil Scott Michael prevailed with 41 points. Corey Temby (39) finally shook off a willing attack from the determined Dean Trickett, courtesy of a count back. The rest of the walking wounded were C. Michael (36), R. Veitch (35), D. Addison (35), J. Michael (34), B. Michael (34), G. Toms (33), D. Rodgers (32), A. Leaver (29), D. Goudie (24) and G. Anderson (22). From a considerably contracted C Grade mob emerged Dean “Dingo Giblets” Robinson, far too good with a monster score of 40 points, towering over Jordan Wilson’s 34 and Martin Bell’s 31. With just 24 points, A. Henstridge was inspired to exit backwards, head down, in tears. Two Junior players got stuck in, with Jake Michael (34) doing just enough to get the jelly beans ahead of Dillon Michael (28). The skies were darkened by a huge flock of Birdies, fledged by “Rotten Ron” Butterworth on the 10th, Ian Michael (10th), Wayne Nagle (10th), Emu Ackland (yawn!) (10th) and the Empress of Elegance, Patricia Anderson (3rd.) who, thankfully, dared to be different. That daring also saw Patricia win Nearest the Pin on the 3rd., young Butterworth the 8th., “Watchful” Wayne Nagle on both the 10th. and 13th. while rural Robert Hart cleaned up at the 15th. “Rotten Ron” cunningly wore a Groucho Marx glasses/nose/moustache rig, which Ian Michael countered by wearing his lucky knitted Mickey Mouse socks, as these two went at it, mano-a-mano, in a semi-final round of the Summer Cup. It took a full 19 holes before the Marxist out-muscled the Mouseketeer, so well done those men. This Saturday is predicted to be a stinker, well above 36°, so plan to start early, say between 7 and 8.30am, so we can all get around the course and meet up at the 19th. for an orange-ade or two before the heat of the day.

Wim Van Pelt won Thursday’s competition with 44 points, the one time 13 handicap player is slowly working his way back into the form he showed two years ago. A close second was Bob Ahola who in his 80th year is getting closer to shooting a score that will break or at least equal his age! Other scores Roen Cameron 41, Len Usher 39, Barry Schwartz 38, Rex Mortimer 38 (c/b), all of the above being ball winners, George Dahlitz 38, John Riley, Wally Jackson, Ron Collins, Bob Spriggs 37, Brian Cooper. Nearest to pins Anton Noack 9th, John Mitchell 14th. Birdies Barry Schwartz 3rd, Roen Cameron 1st, John Mitchell 5th and Barry Zerna 1st. The club welcomes all handicap golfers from any club to play in Thursday’s competition for a fee of $8.00 which includes the ball competition.

Belling – a long respected name in Balaklava Heritage Highlights

The family name of Belling has long been respected in the Balaklava area. ‘Prosperous Balaklava’, first published in 1908, tells us that Mr. Carl Belling was one of at least four brothers who came to this area in the 1860s and took up farm land near Whitwarta, the property being originally part of Werocata. It reports, “...he battled hard, struggled with his brothers for many years, and was verily a pioneer.” When two of his elder brothers moved to New South Wales in 1892, Carl entered into partnership with his remaining brother and continued farming, the advent of superphosphates contributing to his success in agriculture. He also developed a keen interest in breeding thoroughbred

draught horses and was a keen supporter of agricultural shows and a variety of sports. Carl Belling was a member of Balaklava District Council for many years (1897-1904) and, interestingly, he twice refused the chairmanship. Another member of the Belling family, in the next generation, was Mr CW (Charlie) Belling who, in about 1920, began operating the International Harvester Co agency in Railway Terrace, next door to

It is interesting to note that the safe in this business premises originally came from the Primary Producer’s Bank in 1932 - Mr. Belling bought it from the liquidators after it had been loaded on the train, ready to be whisked away. I wonder what happened to the safe? Does anyone know where it is now? Mr Carl Belling.

Ag Bureaus offer soil test kits A new range of soil testing kits is helping local farmers work out how much fertiliser they need to apply for the coming growing season. The Agricultural Bureau of SA is subsidising a number of kits for its members so they can test for soil nutrients including phosphorous, potassium and organic carbon, as well as problems such as salinity and toxins. Advisory Board of Agriculture Chairman Neville Ferme said knowing what was in soil before applying fertiliser was important.

“It can not only improve your crops, but save you a lot of money,” Neville said. “It’s something everyone should do this autumn. “We’ve had several years of low production, low rainfall and high fertiliser costs, but the last growing season saw increased production in some areas due to higher rainfall during the growing period.” Rural Solutions SA senior soil and land management consultant, Brian Hughes, said all agricultural crops needed nutrients in different amounts. “If some nutrients are unavailable or

lacking, plant growth will be restricted,” Brian said. “High yields are only possible if all major and minor elements are present and available in the right amount. “Nutrients are constantly being removed as product, lost through leaching and erosion. It’s also possible that nutrients might be present, but not in a form available to plants. “Testing is vital to see exactly what’s in your soil and what’s missing.” Kits are available from Mary Crawford at Rural Solutions SA on (08) 8688 3414 or email mary.crawford@sa.gov.au.

Call for climate change comment Farmer groups and rural advisors are being sought by the Grains Research & Development Corporation to help them to communicate their climate change research to grain growers. Fifty-eight farmer groups and advisors have already signed up to the program, representing state departments, growers’ groups, agricultural consultants and agribusiness groups. “Growers see both their peer groups and their advisors as credible sources of information,” says science communicator

Jenni Metcalfe whose company, Econnect Communication, is working with the GRDC to help get information about the research into the hands of growers. “There are many farmer groups out there working together to manage climate variability and change. We want to hear from them and we want to hear from rural advisors, whether they be private consultants, government advisers or retail agronomists.” A 2008 GRDC survey found local contacts and support networks (advisors, other growers) are growers’ most trusted sources

of information and advice and have a big influence on growers’ farm management decisions. Agronomists were found to be the most trusted source of information or support services for farm businesses. Participants who register their details can also choose to receive quarterly email updates about GRDC’s climate research and participate in an on-line discussion forum. Farmer groups and advisors should register their interest by completing a short questionnaire at: www.climateadvisors. net.au The frontrunner in fertiliser Ph: 8415 1900

n FOOTBALL GEARS UP FOR APFL SEASON 2010

Three new coaches 4 Lamond leads Balaklava 4 Opitz is new Tiger boss 4 Nelson to lift Bombers By Bronte Hewett

! a b b a d a b Yab ... Do they know it’s

Balaklava, not Bedrock! n FRED and Wilma Flintstone went time travelling last Saturday night, leaving Bedrock to wind up courtside in Balaklava for the big tennis “Bash for Cash” challenge. Fred and Wilma, aka Chris and Kimberley Brownlie, joined scores of other odd-balls at Ralli Park. n More pictures, Page 20.

With under two months until kick off, Adelaide Plains football teams are well into pre-season training, with three new A grade coaches settling into their roles. Stuart Lamond has returned to Balaklava and has taken on a playing/coaching role of Balaklava’s A grade side. Eight years since he last played for Balaklava, Stuart has returned to his roots and taken over the coaching role from Andy Michael. An experienced player, he was drafted to Geelong in 1995 and played in their reserves. But it will be his first season coaching, after playing for Freeling for five years and for Broadview last year. Stuart said he is looking forward to his new role as player/coach. “It’s going to be an exciting challenge,” he said. With a focus on development, he said he is setting a high standard for up and coming athletes. “I look forward to developing some of the younger kids,” “It’s been about 10 years since a premiership for Balaklava, so its my challenge to get us back up the premiership table,” he said. Gib Palmer continues as reserves coach, while Rob Michael remains the senior colts coach, with junior colts mentor yet to be announced. At Long Plains,United’s new A grade coach is Travis Opitz, who is five games away from playing 200 for the club. Travis said his focus so far has been on fitness. “Fitness has lacked a bit in previous years,” he said. “We started training in November, so we tried to get a bit of a head start,” he said.

TRAVIS Opitz shows the rugged style he will demand at United. “We haven’t recruited too badly either,” he said. But keeping tight lipped, he didn’t reveal any details. The club has also had a good turn out for pre-season training. The reserves coach is still Michael Trussell and the junior teams are not yet appointed. Hamley Bridge’s new A grade coach is Rian Nelson, who was the A grade coach for Barrossa District in the Gawler and Baroosa League for the past two years. Rian takes over from Ben Burgess. He said the general feeling at Hamley Bridge is really positive. “There are a lot of new things around the club, there’s a lot of support and interest from the community,” he said. “The footy club has a really good social feel to it, and there is plenty of interest in making sure the club goes okay.” • Continued page 23
