Gotcha!

A MAN who drove his car through a 60 km/h town speed zone at more than double the limit was nabbed by police. The 27-year-old, from Craigmore, was reported for speeding after allegedly being detected travelling at 134 km/h in a 60 km/h zone by a hand held laser at Marrabel. The man will appear in court at a later date. Riverton police officer, Kelly Hersey, was

patrolling the area after several complaints from members of the public about excessive speeding by motorists. Brevet sergeant Hersey said there had been reports from local residents on early morning walks who had been forced to leap clear of speeding cars. She warned local police would crack down on speeding throughout the region.

Local towns such as Balaklava, Port Wakefield, Blyth and Lochiel could get a dose of Tour Down Under cycling fever next year, with District Council of The Copper Coast (DCCC) vying for a leg of the race. Council has expressed interest in hosting a leg from Moonta, Wallaroo or Port Hughes to either Clare or Port Wakefield, with the exact route yet to be decided. But any decision to hold the race from Yorke Peninsula to Clare would mean a boost for the region and its towns. DCCC CEO, Peter Dinning, said there has been a lot of local interest so far, but planning still is in the early stages. “We haven’t heard anything at this stage. All we have done is expressed an interest in being involved in the

CYCLISTS on the road to Saddleworth in January. event in 2011,” Mr Dinning said. “We will be looking at having some essence of coast in it,” Mr Dinning said. There are two options being considered for the leg, which both incorporate towns in the Wakefield Regional Council area. n Continued Page 4

Cash for Mallala, Lewiston ‘Public square’ and playground projects share $80,000 in Federal funding Mallala and Lewiston will share $80,000 in Federal funding for two projects. District Council of Mallala received the cash from the second round of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP). The newly-created “public square” in the centre of Mallala receives $22,000 for “enhancement” and the Lewiston community gets $58,000 for construction of a playground and shade structure. “We’re pleased to have any additional funding,” Mallala mayor, Marcus Strudwicke said. With regard to how the space will be used in Mallala, on the corner where Wasleys road and Redbanks road meet, Markus said input from the community has been valuable.

“We’ve had some community consultations over the last couple of weeks, and have taken into consideration the input from the community. Currently the recommendation is awaiting approval from council.” “It will be good to finally develop the space into something a little more attractive than the patch of gravel it is at the moment,” he said. Council has identified three possible sites for construction of the playground in Lewiston. “It is planned to be built on a piece of council land relatively close to the centre of the Lewiston district,” Mr Strudwicke said. It is proposed the initial playground site will eventually develop into a space for other public precincts. “Lewiston councillors are keen to see this public space expand into a community centre

Councils in call for more State support

in the future,” Mr Strudwicke said. The grant funding was announced last Friday in a joint statement from the Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, and local Wakefield MP, Nick Champion. The government provided $395,000 in total for ready-to-go community infrastructure projects in the electorate of Wakefield. Mr Albanese said the funding goes towards projects such as sports field lighting, construction of playgrounds and upgrades to parks and public squares. “All up, these projects are expected to support five new jobs during construction.” Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, said the Federal government would deliver this funding to the City of Salisbury, District Council

of Mallala and Light Regional Council. “In just over a year, this program has delivered $1 billion to build and renew community facilities across Australia, making it the largest single investment in local infrastructure in the nation’s history,” Mr Champion said. Mr Albanese said already more than 3,300 community construction projects had either been completed or were underway. “Across the country the RLCIP is funding sporting fields, swimming pools, libraries, community halls, water and energy saving facilities and other local projects,” Mr Albanese said. Light Regional Council received $45,000 to upgrade works at the Davidson Reserve, including construction of two bridges, installation of an underground irrigation system, lawn and garden beds

SA Ambulance Service is urgently seeking volunteer ambulance officers to offer their time for a good cause. The SA Ambulance Service recruitment vehicle and some dedicated volunteer ambulance officers were in town last Friday, encouraging people to join the team as volunteer ambulance officers. Balaklava urgently needs more volunteer ambulance officers to maintain a standard roster. Currently the team only has about a dozen volunteers. Ambulance officer volunteers, Cathyrn Blackwell, Sharyne Gottwald, Jeanette

Aldenhoven and ambulance training officer, Pat Wandel were out in force outside Foodland supermarket in Balaklava last week, attempting to recruit new members. The women who have about 40 years of volunteer ambulance service between them highlighted the benefits of becoming a volunteer. “It’s important for your children and your family so that if they ever require medical help, you will then be able to understand and identify the signs and symptoms of someone in danger,” Ms Blackwell said. “It’s one of the best things you can do in life. You’ve got

to be committed,” Ms Aldenhoven said. An information session night will be held at Balaklava Ambulance Station next Monday at 7:30pm for those interested in becoming volunteers. Port Wakefield will also have an information session on March 16 at 7:30pm at the Ambulance Station. The SA Ambulance Service recruitment vehicle, which is in the local area for three weeks from Adelaide, will travel around country areas seeking to recruit new volunteers. Planned film on murders ‘in bad, bad, taste’

Snowtown again will face ‘barrels’ trauma A film about Snowtown and the infamous ‘Bodies in Barrels’ murders, will be made with support and funding of the Victorian government. Victorian Innovation Minister, Gavin Jennings, has said $245,000 would be provided towards the project. Independent MP for Frome, Geoff Brock, this week expressed his disapproval of the film’s production. “I think it’s in bad, bad taste,” Mr Brock said. “There is absolutely no necessity to make a film about a tragedy in its own right “It will no doubt bring up memories for the families of a tragedy and traumatic time in the town,” he said. Snowtown Community Management Committee chair,

By Lauren Hermon

Paul McCormack, echoed Mr Brock’s thoughts on the subject. “We just want to move on. There is no need to bring it up,” Mr McCormack said. The Victorian government’s funding of the film raised questions about the quality of films produced today. Mr Brock plans to send a letter of disapproval to Mr Jennings, who made the funding announcement last week. Mr Jennings did not return our phone call or respond to an e-mail questioning the Victorian government’s funding of the film before the Plains Producer went to print. South Australia Premier, Mike Rann, who is Arts Minis-

ter, also did not respond when asked to comment by the Plains Producer. South Australian government Tourism Minister, Jane Lomax-Smith, focused on the reality of the decision to produce the feature. “While I personally think this is a tasteless subject for a movie, that is a business decision being made in another state,” Ms Lomax-Smith said. However, Ms Lomax-Smith remained supportive of the quality of films that come out of South Australia, promoting a good image for the state. “I am proud in South Australia we support quality films and provide brilliant locations for outstanding movies that have

stood the test of time, such as Breaker Morant and Storm Boy, innovative and funny movies such as Dr Plonk and recent achievements such as Beautiful Kate and The Boys Are Back,” she said. Wakefield Regional Council CEO, Phil Barry, said as yet there had been no contact from the film’s production company or anyone else. The film details the tragic murders of 12 people and bodies stored in barrels in an old bank building in Snowtown between August 1992 and May 1999. Four people were convicted of the murders. The film will be produced by Melbourne-based production company Warp Films Australia, with pre-production set to start this year.

Further flood mitigation works on the Gawler River are unlikely to be funded by District Council of Mallala. Councillors discussed flood plain management at a recent council meeting. At the meeting, councillors said any further remediation costs should be the responsibility of State government, rather than councils. Councillors said the flood mitigation works had already cost much more than predicted, with unsatisfactory results. “The initial report said we were go-

ing to be protected from a one in 100 year flood at $1.2 million or something like that, and what we got was higher cost and only one in 20 year protection,” said councillor Steve Jones. Other councillors agreed council should not be made to bear any more costs associated with flood mitigation on the Gawler River, particularly given the recent approval of the Buckland Park development and State government’s push for more urban development on the Adelaide Plains as part of its 30 year plan for Greater Adelaide.

cover in 2010-11 budget. In addition, following flooding in coastal areas last year, DCM has joined the award winning Community FloodSafe program. The program assists flood risk communities through community education by SA State Emergency Services volunteers. Flood mapping has highlighted the floodprone areas and each council has nominated the key areas for FloodSafe to target. Coastal areas of Mallala are also subject to special attention in relation to tidal inundation and storm surge as this risk has become more threatening in recent years, possibly due to climate change. While several meetings have already taken place, more community meetings will be held in Parham, Webb Beach, Thompson Beach, Mid-

dle Beach, Lewiston and Two Wells in the coming months. Initiatives in the program include articles in council newsletters, street corner meetings, community group meetings, internet sites, brochures, school education and public relations. The FloodSafe program is seeking local volunteers to assist in educating the wider community in the Mallala council area about flood risks. Volunteers will address communities on local risks, historic flooding, flood plans, protecting family and property, understanding flood warnings, having emergency kits and how to call SES for response. If you are interested in volunteering or for more details contact Judith Bleechmore on 0407 794 756 or visit www. ses.sa.gov.au.

Chance of a tour down here • From Page 1 Option one would see the race go through Lochiel, Blyth and into Clare. The second option takes in Lochiel, Blyth, Balaklava and into Port Wakefield. Wakefield Regional Council CEO Phil Barry said WRC had not yet been approached by DCCC, but said there is a possibility the issue could be raised at the Yorke Peninsula Council Alliance meeting next week. “I would expect communication any time given the reported DCCC expression of interest,” Mr Barry said. The issue had been raised in open forum at a council meeting on February 24 by councillor Barry Nottle, as a result of a report in the Yorke Penisula Country Times newspaper. Mr Barry said the event would have a positive impact if the bid was successful. “The community and economic outcomes shown in the 2010 TDU event

through the Clare & Gilbert Valleys region clearly highlighted the many benefits of this international event flowing through to the local level,” Mr Barry said. DCCC mayor, Paul Thomas, believes it is important for the race to incorporate other areas of South Australia other than the city and wine regions. “It allows other communities to experience the event and be involved,” Mr Thomas said. “I am confident we would be able to stage the event,” he said With a hope there will be feedback about the submission by April, Mr Thomas said council was optimistic. “We have a better chance now (of hosting) then a month ago, before the bid was submitted,” he said. If the bid is successful, Mr Thomas said he is looking forward to working with Wakefield Regional Council and Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council to identify the options.

Tour Down Under organiser, Mike Turtur, said a record number of council areas had applied to host a leg of the race next year. “There were submissions from 19 council areas, so we are working through the same process as every year,” Mr Turtur said. “We are about half way through the process. “About eight council areas will be selected.” While every step is taken to share the race around different areas of South Australia, there are several practicalities to be considered. “We look at distance from Adelaide and terrain,” Mr Turtur said. The DCCC submission is within the two hour radius of Adelaide requirement. The official announcement of each stage will be made in July. “Prior to that, the councils will be advised of their progression,” Mr Turtur said.

District Council of Mallala’s Strategic Management Plan is under review. The plan will map goals, outcomes and strategies to guide the district’s development for the next four years and strives to achieve the council’s vision. The public are invited to attend the community meetings to enable the stake holders to have an input into the preparation of the plan. On Tuesday, March 16, there will be a session at Mallala RSL at 7pm. OnWednesday, March 17, another session will be at the Two Wells Visitor Information Centre at 7pm. The sessions are an opportunity to highlight key issues council should consider in developing the new plan.

Funded by the Mid North Division of Rural Medicine (MNDRM) through the Australian General Practice Networks – Building on Can Do grants program, the workshop aims to help health professionals identify different types of mental illnesses and the

Project officer for MNDRM, Cathie Bammann said the workshop has been well received and will hopefully provide some comfort to the rural community that their doctors, psychologists and mental health workers are up-to-date with training. “Sometimes rural health profes-

I have personally experienced his after hours mail deliveries when something is too big or heavy to fit in the letterbox – and also his deliveries to my door for the same reason during his rounds. I am sure it is not in his job description to get off his motorbike and do this. Shane has also delivered other people’s mail to my letterbox on occasions when they are away from home and I am responsible for collecting their mail. He always delivers with a smile and friendly wave. Owen may have the truly lovely Derily, but Balaklava also has a top post office powered by the bustling, busy and ever helpful Ray Koch. Thanks fellas, you are tops, and your service much appreciated. Marion Lacey, Balaklava

“The workshop was a great way to understand how to apply practical skills into clinical work,” Ms Nicholson said. The MNDRM will be hosting a workshop in Port Pirie on Thursday, March 18 and Jamestown on April 8. A networking session will be held two weeks after each workshop where health professionals review the information and examine case studies to help put their training into practice. • For More details, contact Cathie on 8842 1077.

The workshop was interactive with health professionals given the chance to ask questions and voice concerns. Wakefield Plains Medical Centre psychologist and MNDRM mental health programs manager, Maggie Nicholson, said it was a good way to learn more about mental health and the effects of drugs and alcohol.

Council’s website often is out of date Regarding the article “Concern on Mallala council meetings” (the Plains Producer, Page 7 March 3). In the article, Council CEO Charles Mansueto refers to the Mallala Council website – although the report did not give an address. However, it is easy enough to find after googling it. According to the article there are three council meetings: 1) The ordinary meeting of council which takes place on the fourth Monday of each month ie 25/1, 22/2, 22/3: At the time of writing, (March 6) the only agenda on the website is for the meeting which was held on February 22. The most recent “council minutes” available on the website are from December 21 which was actually a meeting of the Community Development Board. I could not find any other minutes relating to the ordinary meetings. 2) The Strategic Community & Governance committee takes place on the third Monday of each month ie 15/2, 15/3: The minutes of February 15 are on

the website. There are no agendas. 3) The Strategic Infrastructure & Planning committee meets on the second Monday of each month ie 8/2, 8/3. The minutes of February 8 are on the website. There are no agendas. “Proposed Meetings for 2009” for the Community Development Board are also listed on the website! In order for the community to have confidence in CEO Mansueto’s assertion .... “all the recommendations and reports are accessible to the community and councillors. The information is on the website,”.... then it needs to actually be there and it needs to be up to date. Otherwise, the ability of council to maintain transparency is called into question. On the home page, members of the public are also invited to submit ideas regarding the vacant block at 2a Wasleys Rd by May 26, 2009! Within about two hours of my email pointing out that information was a little out of date, it had disappeared! Laura Parsons, Mallala via email, Tuesday, March 9.

David calls in to talk about that OTHER election By Terry Williams LIBERAL candidate for the Federal electorate of Wakefield, David Strauss, has toured Balaklava and the region in a prelude to the Federal election, expected later this year. Mr Strauss visited Balco last Thursday, for a tour of its Bowmans plant and later visited Clare. He made a brief tour of Balaklava and plans to return later with more frequent visits as the election campaign gathers pace. “I will be making myself available to local residents to discuss any topic they feel is important,” Mr Strauss said. Rain soaks Plains Adelaide Plains regions have experienced their first taste of Autumn rain over the long weekend, with the highest recording of 40.6mm in Port Wakefield for the week ending Tuesday March 9. Balaklava received 28mm, while Auburn and Saddleworth also had a good soaking with 37mm and 37.2mm respectively. Hoyleton recorded 36.2mm and Blyth was favoured with 24.2mm, while Clare (16.9mm), Mallala (19.0mm), Roseworthy (12.0mm) and Riverton (14.0mm) also got a fair share. Owen and Two Wells were less fortunate with 9.5mm and 8.0mm respectively, but the clouds bypassed Snowtown the most with just 2.2mm falling. In the first week of March, rainfall in Auburn, Balaklava, Blyth, Hamley Bridge, Hoyleton, Mallala, Port Wakefield, Roseworthy and Saddleworth has already surpassed last year’s rainfall for the entire month of March. n Conserving water – Page 15

Gawler River win

Gawler River’s community has won its fight to retain the local Samuel Dawkins Reserve for community use following the intervention by local MP for Light, Tony Piccolo. Light Regional Council passed a resolution at its February meeting to negotiate with the State government a proposal that would lead to the retention of a major part of the site in community hands and bring forward the redevelopment of Gawler River CFS Station. Mr Piccolo welcomed the decision and congratulated them for their willingness to listen to the arguments he had put forward on behalf of local residents. Mr Piccolo also acknowledged the support he had received from ward councillor, Bill Close. The reserve incorporates the old Gawler River School House, the Gawler River CFS Station and some tennis courts that are in poor condition.

He has lived in the Gawler area for the past 25 years and has owned a picture framing business. He says he has a keen interest in economic, social, environmental and political issues. During his visit to Balaklava and the Plains Producer, Mr Strauss discussed a variety of topics linked to the federal arena and affecting the local region. These included the suggested railway bypass around Adelaide to the Adelaide Plains, a possible relocation of Parafield airport to the

Western Australian farmer and chairman of Nuffield International, Peter Nixon chaired the conference on Monday. The Australian contingent includes all 18 of the 2010 Nuffield Scholars, with other Nuffield scholars from Canada, France, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and delegates from associations such as the Eisenhower Fellowships (USA), the Executive Program for Agricultural Producers (USA), Global Dairy Farmers (Netherlands), Mexican Farm Co-operative and Uruguayan Farmers. Helen will spend three weeks in Washington DC and hopes to come home with more knowledge and said the experience will benefit her greatly. “The experience is good for confidence-building and mixing with others,” Helen said. “I’d like to have the skill base to do more when I get home.”

Marek’s Festival focus Snowtown artist Marek Herburt is enjoying the perks of the art world, exhibiting his art work across South Australia and overseas. Marek is one of 25 Australian artists invited to exhibit his work in the Heysen Trail Exhibition 2010, as part of the Adelaide Festival of Arts. He has also been invited to exhibit in Poland this month with 20 of his paintings making the journey to the gallery in Katowice, Poland. He recently sold an artwork, which was exhibited in Parachilna as part of the Heysen Trail exhibit, to the Italian ambassador. “It is a very exciting exhibition,” Mr Herburt said. Born in Poland, Merek and his wife, Anna, moved to Australia 28 years ago. They have been living in Snowtown for 15 years. Anna is also an artist and the pair

By Bronte Hewett were featured at the Burra Regional Art Gallery recently, which also featured works by the Germein Art Focus Group. It was called “Focussed on Variety.” The Heysen Trail Exhibition is located in different venues across South Australia from Parachilna to Fleurieu Peninsula in conjunction to where the Heysen walking trail runs. Call for spend on valley pools

•Geoff Brock, the sitting Independent MP for Frome, has called on the next government to assist Clare and Gilbert Valleys council’s proposal for upgrades at Riverton swimming

pool and the The Valleys Lifestyle Centre’s pool. Mr Brock, who says he supports the Clare and Riverton communities, regional South Australia and regional sport, wants State and Federal funding in a bid to boost economic benefits for the region. Mr Brock said the

Riverton swimming pool proposal by Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council would include replacing the dilapidated change rooms, canteen/reception, a first aid centre and community activities space, reinstatement of the heating of the toddler pool and a public toilet

and barbecue area. The Valleys Lifestyle Centre’s new design would bring about the staging of larger events, better viewing for spectators, ease of access for the older community members for participation in hydrotherapy and physiotherapy, and the

likelihood of employment opportunities for the community, in particular our youth. “Added benefits of the modifications would mean improved access to first grade facilities for coaching, training and aquatics all year round,” Mr Brock said.

$75 million country health plan Country health will receive $75 million from a $300 million package of commitments which will be the centrepiece of a Redmond Liberal government’s first term in office. Opposition Leader, Isobel Redmond, outlined a Redmond Liberal government’s vision for South Australia at the Liberal Party’s 2010 election launch at the Norwood Town Hall last weekend. “I have a real plan to repair South Australia’s ailing health system,” Ms Redmond said. Additional works will also be made across the state’s metropolitan and country hospitals.

Ms Redmond said she also has a plan to ensure water security in South Australia and to reinvigorate the state’s neglected education sector. Other commitments made by Ms Redmond is a $17.5 million support scheme for non-governmental schools, with another $4 million going towards extra school support officer hours.

GM ban to stay

•A re-elected Rann Labor government will extend the current moratorium on growing genetically modified crops until 2014. Environment Minister, Jay

Weatherill, said Labor had made the decision so the State’s clean, green brand could be protected – and he called on the Liberals to match the election promise. “Labor is very clear on this issue – the Liberals are all over the place,” he said. “I strongly believe South Australians have reason to fear an elected Redmond Government would overturn the moratorium and put the State at risk. “The Liberals have been very careful to leave themselves wriggle room on the issue and I think it’s time they actually made a strong commitment.”

SAFF pushes its ‘big four’ in federal Budget The South Australian Farmers Federation (SAFF) has made a submission outlining the four main items that should be included in this year’s federal Budget. These were: • Drought funding • Funding for agriculture research and development •Support for the Murray Darling Basin • Incentives to attract and retain people in regional areas.

In releasing the submission, SAFF president, Peter White, said it was essential these issues were tackled in the 2010 Budget for both the short and long-term future of agriculture. “Sufficient drought funding is required for continuing the current arrangements in regions still ECdeclared, for drought funding and for the new federal drought policy,” Mr White said. “If agriculture is going to survive

in the long-term, more funding is needed for agriculture research and development. Control of the Murray Darling Basin must be managed at a federal level and this requires sufficient federal funding. “There is also the need for incentives to attract and retain people in regional areas, including expanding regional zone allowances and extending the first home owners grant to people buying their first farm.”

NEWS v District ELECTION CANDIDATE TACKLES PLANNED LOCKOUT ZONES:

Marine parks a ‘cruel hoax’ Proposed marine parks across South Australia have been labelled a “cruel hoax” on South Australians by Independent SA Fishing and Lifestyle Legislative Council candidate, Neil Armstrong. Mr Armstrong claims the introduction of more than 200 unmarked lockout zones within the marine park perimeters was likely to discourage recreational fishing, particularly in light of the heavy fines to be imposed for straying into one. Mr Armstrong said the parks

were likely to be terminal for many businesses, livelihoods and lifestyles, with the primary effect to prohibit fishing and aquaculture. Research conducted by Mr Armstrong indicated marine biodiversity was not at risk in South Australia, land based pollution was the biggest threat to marine conservation and the marine parks were a political ploy to pander to the radical green environmentalist groups. “The real environmentalists are Fishers, with a vested interest

in a sustainable environment/ biodiversity. One which their children can continue to enjoy and responsibly interact with,” Mr Armstrong said. “Up to 6,000 jobs and over $1000 million in the fishing, boating and associated industries are being put at risk by the introduction of these marine parks,” he said. The campaign and election strategy come after the Upper Gulf St Vincent Local Advisory Group called for public input for the soon-to-be established

It was “Farewell Brinkworth 32” and “Welcome Brinkworth 34” on February 23, when CFS infrastructure and logistics officer, Phil Luxford, delivered a spanking new truck to this appreciative group of Brinkworth volunteers. Also in the welcome party was Region 4 Training Officer, Phil Tapscott, who drove from Port Augusta for the big occasion.

CFS trucks are replaced, on average, every 20 years but Brinkworth 32 had served the community for an extra two years. Phil Luxford gave the local boys a conducted tour’ of the truck’s features, which include a lead-filled pipe at the front to assist with balance and traction when carrying a load of water. They were cautioned not to remove it, as putting it back would be a heavy job!

SPECTATORS watching football after the grandstand was re-opened last year.

Grandstand needs you at working bee

Balaklava’s Ralli Park grandstand will have bird-proof netting fitted at a combined working bee on Sunday, March 21. The netting has been donated by agricultural supplier, Tapex, through Jeremy Lomman, Balaklava-based state manager for Tapex. It is similar to that used in vineyards. Ralli Park Authority president, Andrew Michael, said it was hoped various members of the community would support the working bee – not just members of sporting clubs. The day will start about 9am. Special lifting machinery will be used to help fit the netting and also allow gutters to be cleaned. It was hoped to also cement around the bases of the new grandstand steps. Ralli Park Authority has been boosted by cash coming from the MG car club day last year and bar profits from Balaklava Show, allowing these improvements to be made. Next job on the work list is repairing and painting the grandstand seating. Volunteers should contact Andrew Michael on 0429 633 060. Balaklava Football and Netball club will be holding a working bee on the same day to prepare the oval, courts and clubrooms for the coming season.

S c h o o l f u n d i n g… . e g a r e v a w o l e b l l e ‘W C a n d o b e t t e r.’ The South Australian Government’s contribution to the education of children and young people in Non-Government schools (Catholic and Independent) is the second-lowest per student of all States and Territories. On average, the South Australian Government contributes 12.9 percent of the cost of educating a Non-Government school student, compared to a nation-wide average of 16.3 percent for all States (Productivity Commission Report 2009). Other state governments are increasing their funding to Non-Government schools while we fall further behind. Non-Government schools support and educate more than 91,000 students from a wide range of social, cultural and economic backgrounds. That is one-in-three of all students in South Australia. At senior secondary school, it rises to more than 40 percent of all students. And, it’s growing. Families at our Non-Government schools support investment in all schools and just want a fair share from their State Government.

No rules in coping with grief The term “grief” is used to describe reactions and feelings a person might have to the loss of someone or something that is important to them. The feeling of loss not only covers the immediate loss of a relationship, good health, a job, a way of life or the death of a loved one, but also includes the loss of generations of family bonds, the removal of links to spiritual land rights or neglect of the cultural heritage. What is grief? Grief is not an illness – it can not be cured or hurried along. No two people experience grief in the same way. It is affected by many factors such as the nature of the loss, the person’s past history, their cultural

and spiritual beliefs, and their personality. There is no right or wrong way to experience grief. Some common grief reactions include sadness, crying, shock, numbness, difficulty accepting the loss, anger, guilt, shame, isolation, alienation, loneliness and relief. Why are there differences in how people grieve? We are all different. We come from different family backgrounds and cultures. Every culture has traditions, rules and expectations about how grief is expressed and dealt with. How long does grief last? You can’t put a time limit on grief. The best answer seems to be “as long as it takes”. Grief doesn’t occur in neat stages. It is a chaotic

Durdin Funeral Directors

process, which is different for each person. We don’t recover from grief as we might from some physical illness. Instead, we gradually learn to adjust to the loss. This adjustment process depends on how you express your grief and other feelings. There are no simple solutions to getting over the pain caused by your loss. At this time you may feel that no person, no words, no reading material can ease the pain. However, organisations like Lifeline can help. • The above information comes from the Lifeline website, lifeline. org.au There is much more information and assistance available. FROME is held by Geoff Brock (Independent) with a margin of 1.7 per cent. Previously a Liberal seat, it was held by former premier, Rob Kerin until he retired, forcing a by-election in January last year. Frome stretches south east from the industrial city of Port Pirie to include the agricultural districts of the Clare and Gilbert Valleys. Apart from Port Pirie and suburbs, major population centres include Port Broughton, Clare, Crystal Brook, Snowtown, Auburn, Mintaro, Saddleworth and Riverton. It includes all of the Port Pirie Regional Council, the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, and parts of the Northern Areas, Wakefield and Barunga West Councils. The ABC election website says: If Geoff Brock has looked after local issues, he should be able to improve his profile enough in the east of the electorate to ensure he stays ahead of Labor on the primary vote, and also attracts enough former Liberal voters to win. For the Liberal Party, this is a must win seat if they hope to win more seats than Labor.” Frome gains around 725 voters south

Loyalty and passion at the Frome ‘coalface’ GULF ST VINCENT

GEOFF Brock swept into parliament as the Member for Frome with an upset victory as an Independent candidate, stealing the seat from the Liberal party. Geoff was raised at Wandearah, 25 kilometres south of Port Pirie. He has worked for BP Australia in Port Pirie, been manager for BP Australia at Port Augusta and operated a roadhouse at Port Augusta for three years; initially employing 17

Hospitals will return to local community Having grown up on the family farm at Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsula, state Liberal candidate for Frome, Terry Boylan, knows rural SA and says maintaining and improving regional services in health, education, roads and securing water supply is his paramount focus should he be successful in the state election on March 20. “A Liberal government will reinstate local hospital boards to give country communities control over local health services and invest in our regions to provide better roads,” Mr Boylan said. Communication and understanding is what Mr Boylan believes are important traits as liberal candidate for Frome. “The local MP must be accessible to his constituents,” he said. With a commitment to have an office in Port Pirie and the Clare area, Mr Boylan said he will also travel the electorate, speaking to the people in Frome and listening to their concerns and issues to gain a better understanding of what needs to be done to make things better in Frome. “Rural South Australians are facing more challenges today than ever. “We need a strong team player in parliament who can deliver for our area “People are telling me they’ve been let down by a lack of water security, let

down by a lack of health services and let down by the state of our roads.” Listening to the people’s voice is what Mr Boylan says is vital. “These are the issues critical to people’s lives and that I will fight to deliver. Staying loyal to his home roots, Mr Boylan is adamant to defend regional South Australia. “The current government has ignored regional South Australians and I want to be part of a team that gives them a better deal”. Mr Boylan has been a police officer for about 25 years and works in Port Pirie as an operations sergeant.

education and facilities, improving 0 5 10 20 30 road infrastructure are just a few of the Kilometres issues Mr Brock hopes to address. “There are many more issues, however we must work together to be able to plan a ‘long-term’ strategy for our communities needs,” he said. “A candidate should be available to the people at any time and should ensure they get a better understanding of their areas of responsibility, by getting out and ‘feeling’the area at the

‘coal face’.” With the future in mind, 40 Mr Brock said his way of tackling issues concerning Frome will be done with loyalty and passion. “I am very loyal, passionate about assisting people – passionate about our youth and their future. “I am not constrained by ‘party lines or politics’, but directed and influenced by the people and my discussions with them as I travel the electorate.”

Long-term plan to build economy, deliver for families AUSTRALIAN Labor Party candidate for Frome, John Rohde, has almost lived his entire life in the electorate, having grown up on the family farm near Marrabel. Mr Rohde said his reason for contesting the seat of Frome in the up-coming state election on March 20 is “to deliver for families and effectively represent the electorate to get results.” As an active member of the community and board member of the Mid North Regional Health Service, Mr Rohde said health in the state is just one of the important issues he wishes to tackle if successful in the election. “Health, law and order, education and the environment are important to me and I want to work with community support to ensure the Frome electorate continues to be strong, safe, fair, healthy, smart and green,” Mr Rohde said. With a strong commitment to his team, Mr Rodhe insists long-term planning is vital for success. “I am proud to be part of the Rann team setting out a long-term plan to build a stronger economy and delivering jobs for country families. “The recent State Budget directly supports nearly 14,000 jobs and secures the jobs of many more South Australians as we continue investing in building schools, hospitals, roads and a desalination plant for South Australia,” he said.

I want to be part of the government that can address the needs of the people today and meet the challenges of tomorrow.

John Rohde

Along with his political views, Mr Rohde is also the chairman and station manager at Trax FM community radio station and a participant in the inaugural South Australian Community Regional Leadership Program. “Being a part of this leadership program gives me a better understanding of the issues facing rural and regional South Australia.” Mr Rohde said his rural up-bringing also gives him more knowledge of issues in the area.“Having grown up in a small country community, I want to work to ensure the voices of country people are heard “I want to be part of the government that can address the needs of the people today and meet the challenges of tomorrow.”

NEWS v Brinkworth

Caring for our country

Millie pushing to preserve grasses

I

n the early 90s, Millie Nicholls knew little about the grasses that grew on the Nicholls’ property near Brinkworth. “We had lots of native grasses on our place and I wanted to know what they were,” Millie said. Her curiosity has led to countless hours work with the Mid North Grasslands Working Group, educating landowners about native grasses, how to preserve and increase them, and how the grasses can be beneficial. In recognition of her work, Millie was named recipient of the Australian Government Individual Landcare Award for SA this year, and last year received the Premier’s NRM individual landcare award. It was 15 years ago when Millie first began working with native grasses, and 10 years ago when the grasslands group was established. Millie studied botany at university before working with WWF one day a week for three years with grasslands in the local area. Despite growing up locally, Millie found while she could identify several types of trees, grasses were an entirely different story. When she embarked on her research, it was uncommon for a landowner to focus on native grasses.

“There are still challenges,” Millie said. “People don’t know what’s native and what’s not. “They don’t know the difference or the different ways of managing grasses.” Millie said many of the native grasses were summer-growing grasses, while introduced species tended to be winter growing. “If you’ve got good native grassland, you’ve got green feed in summer and winter,” she said. “It benefits the whole ecosystem, including birds and insects, and native grasses can be quite productive - as productive as any introduced species.” And because most properties already have native grasses, it’s simply a case of nurturing what’s there. The Mid North Grasslands Working Group regularly sends out newsletters to 350 people, and has held field days, workshops and identification days or landholders. Millie said she would spend about two days each week dedicated to her grasslands work, and can see the benefits not only for the property, but also for local wildlife. “Where we live on the edge of the Clare hills we have a lot of birds, and enjoy having wildlife around and want to encourage it,” Millie said.

Libs promise more help for growers Virginia Horticulture Centre could get a funding boost of $400,000 if a Redmond Liberal government is elected in the coming State elections. A Liberal government would inject the money over four years to allow the Virginia Horticulture Centre to expand its ‘SA Grown’ program in which produce grown locally is branded with ‘SA Grown’ labelling. Opposition leader Isobel Redmond

said South Australia grew fantastic high quality produce but it was not always easy to know what was South Australian grown and what was not locally produced. “Given the chance, I’m sure most South Australians would rather support local jobs by buying local produce and the Liberals’ commitment will make it easier for consumers to do this,” Ms Redmond said.

SPORT v Wooroora Bowls

Get set for finals fury! Balaklava, Riverton play it again as Hamley and Owen clash

n ABOVE: Mallala Black’s Keith McDonald shows his team mate the best line during the Division Two White match against Wasleys on Saturday. n RIGHT: Young Wasleys bowler Josh Bowman draws back to bowl.

The minor round is over – now for the finals! Inclement weather conditions were experienced last weekend as the last minor round of the Wooroora Association’s season was played out. Some sides’ seasons were already over with finals’ participation no longer a chance while other sides were involved in battles for a final four spot or an improved position within a the final four. Owen and Riverton suffer losses in Division One The key match last weekend saw Riverton host Balaklava in a match where whichever side won would take a psychological advantage into the first semi-final next week. On this occasion, Balaklava gained the win defeating Riverton by a margin of eight shots. The surprise result of the round saw Mallala upset Owen by nine shots despite having only one rink up. Port Wakefield took out

By John Glistak WWBA secretary the final match against Wasleys by fourteen shots. Hamley Bridge had the bye in this last round. The final four remained unchanged with Hamley Bridge well ahead of Owen followed closely by Riverton and Balaklava. In next Saturday’s semi-finals, the second semi-final will feature Hamley Bridge against Owen, while the first semi-final sees Riverton and Balaklava meet for the second week in a row. Owen and Hamley Bridge have met only once during the season – the other match cancelled due to heat – with Owen winning that match by thirty three shots. While Owen will be buoyed by that result, Hamley Bridge has extensive finals’ experience and this will come to the fore in this semi-final clash. Hamley Bridge would be expected to win and move directly into the Grand Final. Balaklava has defeated River-

Matches start at 1 pm.

Top four finally settled in Two Red A number of Division Two Red sides were vying for final four positions going into last weekend’s matches. Hamley Red, in comfortably defeating Riverton White, grabbed the double chance relegating Riverton White back to third spot. The main interest, however, was to see which side – Hamley White or Owen, or possibly Balaklava Red – would take fourth spot. Hamley Bridge had a difficult task against Division leaders Port Wakefield Blue, eventually losing their match by a comfortable margin. Meanwhile, Owen travelled to Balaklava Red for their match returning with a 12 shot win over their opponents. This win was eventually sufficient to give Owen the last spot in the four. In the final match, Balaklava White was too strong for Tarlee. This weekend’s semi-finals will see Port Wakefield Blue play Hamley Red in the second semi-final and Riverton White play Owen in the first semi-final. Hamley Red was successful in their only match against Port Wakefield Blue during the season, but finals pressure should ensure a much closer result in this clash.

Riverton has had a narrow win and a draw against Owen this season and with recent form for both sides somewhat inconsistent, another tight result very likely. Division Two Red: March6 – Balaklava White 65(12) (M. Olsen 24, E. Cunningham 22, C. Milton 19) def. Tarlee 50(0) (D. Meyers 16, D. Branson 20, F. Gorey 14); Hamley Red 80(12) (J. Bell 32, G. Schilling 27, J. Tily 21) def. Riverton White 49(0) (J. Glistak 11, G. Stone 20, P. Kelly 17); Port Wakefield Blue 84(12) (R. McGregor 26, P. Fontaine 28, A. Williams 30) def. Hamley White 50(0) (L. Stott 19, A. Fyfe 19, B. Morris 12); Owen 82(0) (I. Freebairn 12, P. Sullivan 30, L. Beaty 40) def. Balaklava Red 70(2) (L. Harkness 30, K. Cottle 20, B. Philp 20). Division Two Red Standings – Port Wakefield Blue 157(184); Hamley Red 150(194); Riverton White 141(33.25); Owen 134(58); Balaklava White 124(27.75); Hamley White 124(-24); Balaklava Red 115(-58); Tarlee 111(-72) Division Two Red: March 13 – 2nd Semi-Final: Port Wakefield Blue vs Hamley Red (at Balaklava), 1st Semi-Final: Riverton White vs Owen (at Hamley Bridge). Matches start at 1 pm.

Riverton White grabs fourth spot Two matches were of interest in Two White last Saturday. In the first, Mallala White secured second spot following their comfortable victory over Balaklava White. The other match saw Riverton Black gain fourth spot at the expense of Port Wakefield Gold after winning that match by a narrow five shots. Mallala Black had a comfortable win over Wasleys in the final match of the round. The second semi-final will see Mallala Black play Mallala White. So far this season, Mallala Black has won both of its matches against Mallala White and a similar result is expected

again this weekend. Balaklava Blue play Riverton Black in the first semi-final with Balaklava Blue having won both of their matches against Riverton Black this season, the most recent by one shot. Another close result is anticipated in this clash with the eventual outcome not likely to be determined until perhaps the last few ends. Division Two White: March 6 – Mallala White 88(10) (G. Forrest 31, J. Curnow 33, B. Hill 24) def. Balaklava Blue 51(2) (K. Harkness 13, B. Barr 13, R. McPharlin 25); Mallala Black 87(12) (K. McDonald 25, M. King 25, G. Donlon 37) def. Wasleys 51(0)

It couldn’t have been much better in the division one men. There’s only two points separating the young Guns and Redlegs, and one point the Bulldogs and Sonics. Sonics must be feeling terrible – only one point between going on and packing up. If Young Guns win now, the bulldog club no longer have a mortgage on the men’s final. The game this week should be a spectacle. Young Ben Shepherd was in the action last week, and if he can continue on with his good form and Dallas Hill can match the strength of Michael Olsen, they may just get there. Bulldogs look good. Dribbler reckons offence will be the way if Redlegs are to win, while defence will be the winning way for Bulldogs. Meercats look to have stamped their mark on the division two men’s competition. Dribbler reckons that The Hawks will be the only ones who can topple them. Their two Sams were on fire in Friday night’s game, and should be too good for Owen this week.

Adelaide Plains Basketball Report By Three Points

Long Plains and Hamley Bridge showed they are the two teams in the division one women. Alexandra Wilson showed a bit in Lightning’s loss, and if she can keep it up – along with Alex Simon –the Hamley girls will have a game on their hands. Long Plains’ three pointers made the difference and if either teams hope to beat them they need to sharpen up their three point shooting. Luckily for Lightning, Alexandra often posted up strongly and didn’t allow the two tall Fiebig girls command of the board. Both teams have a good mix of size, strength and fitness so this week’s clash should be a sizzler. Division two women was not the spectacle it should have been – the wind seemed to affect the scores. Tess Lawson was in top form and gave Storm a good lead. If she is as strong this week, Thunder may just bomb

out. Eleven is a pretty low score for any grade, and they will need to score better if they are to have any hope. Dribbler can’t work out why more women don’t drive as he reckons those who do either score or get fouled. The Redleg division one girls made their point on the scoreboard this week, letting Owen know they want to win. Jessica Angel lifted her game and the team was focussed. Dribbler reckons Owen will weather the Storm next week even though Renee McPharlin and Tess Lawson are formidable. The two Williams girls, Ashleigh and Tayla, stamped their mark on the girls division two trophy, and will be hard to beat by either Spurs or Pacers. Their clash this week should be a close one. Dribbler reckons Spurs if Sarah Tiller shows her finals style. The division three girl’s games was really about how good each main player was for their team. Georgia Mcardle fired and nearly gave the Owen Rowans a win. Kelsey Wedding dominated in

the other game to make the Breezers from Owen the favourites for the grand final. The other Nuggets will need to score and Keisha will have to outscore Kirrily if they are to continue. Dribbler remarked how different were the games between these teams on Friday night in comparison to the first games of the season. These youngsters have certainly improved. Owen were given a scare in division one boys, and won’t be resting if they know what’s best. Dribbler reckons that the mavericks versus Broncos next week will be the junior game of the night. Jason Henderson hit his straps, and with Luke Williams and the other Mavericks will be fast and furious this week. I think the umpires may have their hands full as the Broncos look like they really want to get to the grand final and will pull out all stops to get there. The winners of the division two boys certainly outclassed and outscored their opponents. They were both great games with plenty of shots going in. Harrison Veitch had an ‘on’ night, and along with Jordan Taylor made it look too easy. Dribbler reckons Caleb McPharlin’s dedication will make the difference and we will see the Bulls overcome the Magics this week. It was high scoring again in the division three boy’s games, with both the Pistons and Owen scoring fifty five. Tait Nottle scored an amazing twenty eight points but it wasn’t enough. Dribbler reckons these teams need to learn better defence, and also how to use the post player more. But then what does he know?! His season is over now. It is for a number of teams but the basketball is not. Let’s hope they will all show up to support and encourage their friends in the other teams. See you on Friday.

Balaklava night

It had to happen, but Terriers captain Scott McDonald wasn’t prepared for their loss to third placed Helen Barry’s Poodles 4-27 to 2-22. But the biggest upset was Terriers Nick Durdin and Leonie Selleck losing their first set toegther for the season to Helen and the super fill-in Geoff Gardner! Leonie was still in shock after that, with Helen’s consistency cleaning her up. Nick regrouped momentarily to have a big win with wife Tammy, but then crashed in the mens with Scott. Scott and Tammy won their set together in a long tiebreaker over Gary Wilson and Julia Hoskin with some great rallies seen. But experience over youth prevailed as Gary took the next two sets, and Julia took one to show those youngsters just how it’s done! Gards thoroughly enjoyed his night out and was in awe of his new team mates. This loss has relegated the Terriers to second spot, but they’ll still play in the big one this week. Suspicious dirty marks, and others looking very much like Marty’s fingerprints, were detected on the scoresheet of Marty Brice’s Mastiffs and the absent Joyful Ryan’s Beagles, with the Beagles scraping through to win 3-30 to 3-21. Mastiffs Adam Pratt and opponent Chris Curnow once again had a battle supreme, with a 5-3 and 2 tiebreakers played, ending one tie each. Opponent Marty and Darren Scholz also featured in two tiebrakers each ending one apiece, so the majority of matches were close. Cherie Taylor made her season debut for Joyful and luckily remembered her glasses! Cherie eased into her short season with a 3-5, and then was unlucky to lose a tiebreaker with Darren. But Cherie, with the superstar Tanya Greenshields, possibly caused the suspicious dirty marks by defeating Di Taylor and Cherie Cmrlec in a dakdropper! Scholzy and Chris went down to Marty and Adam in a very cunning tiebreak set, but Marty nearly had a meltdown when he heard the girls score! Cherie C and Di raised their shorts but hung their heads and graciously left the courts. Enough said. The final match saw Andrew Lane’s Boxers come flying home, but too late she cried, with a 4-29 to 2-20 win over Marie Heaslip’s Spaniels. The Boxers were assisted by superstar Derek Friedrichs who taunted his young opponent, Nathan Greenshields. Spaniels Nathan and Marie nearly pipped Freddo and Josie Thompson but were unlucky to lose a tight tiebreaker. Seeing as Freddo does Marie’s head in and was taunting Nathan, the Spaniels pair did very well! Sets were dead level after the first two, but Andrew got the whip out from under his bed and cracked it! Partner Helen Durdin was too scared not to hit winners and had a big win with Andrew. Even Andrew’s steely opponent Don Veitch, who has seen a lot in his time, was flustered! Spaniel’s Lisa Redpath ended well with a win with Marie, but had a middle-set slump with Don. The division two match between Chris Allen’s Greyhounds and the absent Bec Houston’s Setters saw the only other dakdropper for the night, with the Greyhound girls Fran Henderson and Lorraine Jenner baring all to Dylan Smith and Cherie Cleary. Dylan has required therapy this week and Cherie has

22 www.plainsproducer.com.au

made herself unavailable for the rest of the season! Fran and David Northcott started with a bang, so to speak, having a good win over Peter Rohrlach and Dylan, whilst Jarek Flight and Cherie won their set together over Chris and Lorraine. Jarek continued on his winning way, this time with Dylan, whilst Lorraine got her revenge in a win with David. So it was down to the last two with the Greyhounds actually leading by one game. The Setters pounced after hearing Laney’s whip next door, and won both, much to the Greyhounds annoyance. Chris and Jarek had a consistent matchup with every one of their sets being a 5-3! Bec would’ve been proud of her team! Final score Setters 4-27 to Greyhounds 2-21. The final match saw Suzy McDonald’s Whippets defeat Diane Gregor’s unlucky Dalmatians 4-29 to 2-20. The first two sets were fairly one-sided ending one apiece, with the Dalmatians thinking they had a chance with super fill-in Shaz Pike playing. Shaz and Glenda Shepherd won their set, then Shaz and Chris Brownlie won their set, but tragedy struck as Diane and Shaz lost a tense tiebreaker to Nicole Parker and yet another fill-in Luke Williams. Diane did well as she had to face youngster Luke all night and eventually his younger but less sexy legs won out! Whippets much improved Shaun Northcott, had a good battle against Glenda with every set being a 6-2! Suzy was most pleased with her team and has them placed nicely in second spot. So this week is the big grand final and matches are as follows: DIVISION 1 1 v 2 – Beagles v Terriers, courts 2 and 3 (grand finalists); 3 v 4 – Poodles v Boxers courts 4 and 5 (runners-up); 5 v extra – Mastiffs v Bulldogs courts 5 and 6 (dogs bodies); 6 v 7 Spaniels v Pugs courts 7 and 8 (wooden spooners). DIVISION 2 1 v 2 – Setters v Whippets, courts 1 and 2 (grand finalists); 3 v 4 – Greyhounds v Dalmatians, courts 8 and 9 (wooden spooners). Presentations and supper will be on afterwards in the clubrooms so please stay and mingle! Good luck to all teams and thankyou to the Bulldogs players for making up the extra division one team – the campers will be thinking of you!

Balaklava reports The Balaklava senior side travelled to Mintaro for the second semi-final against Clare. As some players from both teams had early evening engagements, the middle and bottom men played their doubles early. This ended one apiece, with Phil Barry and Scott McDonald being the Balaklava heroes! The mixed doubles was a mixed bag, with Clare taking the top and bottom sets and number four too! Phil and Helen Barry had a winning score of 6-2 as did Pauline Hill and Rick Lamond, but only the Barry’s sealed their win with a kiss! The toughest win came in the form of a tiebreaker, with Shelley Lamond and Andrew Michael having to play their best to win that one. The scores though, after the mixed, were dead level at 3-28 apiece. The mens singles wasn’t pretty with Balaklava only winning 2 of 6. Rick had an identical winning score as his mixed, whilst Mr Fabulous Phil won an excellent tiebreaker. Andrew Michael thought he could, but couldn’t quite, going down in a long 7-5. But it was the ladies who showed the way, winning all 6 of their singles. Shaz Pike was determined to turn her mixed loss around, and did so with a great 7-5 win, smashing those left-handed forehand winners around. First time finals player, Angela Battle, was making the most of her hour of fame, by staying on court for ever, eventually winning a tiebreaker! But it wasn’t over, well, only for Andrew Lane who had played earlier! Andrew had a very consistent day, having a score of 3 in every set! Scores were looking close with 4 doubles to go. Top ladies Helen and Meilssa Moulds left nothing on the court as they blitzed the opposition in the only dak dropper for the day. Pauline and Shaz kept their end of the bargain to win 6-2, whilst Shelley and Angela came second in a tight 7-5 to Sue Dobbs and Maddie Jacka. Top men Derek Friedrichs and Rick also came second 7-5 to the strong combination of Mark West and Matt Dare in a high quality set. Well done to 3 set winners, Mr Reliable Phil, Helen, and Pauline, and to the team on a great win. Final score Balaklava 14-122 defeated Clare 10-103. The Balaklava side has a week off now and will wait to see who makes it through next week, with the grand final on March 20 – election day! Balaklava reports from February 27 The last minor round saw the Balaklava senior side play host Watervale. The home team had a straight sweep of the mixed doubles, with the closest being a 6-4 win to Andy Michael and Shelley Lamond. The top three pairs didn’t drop a game with Derek Friedrichs starting the chant of ‘Phil Barry’s on fire’ yet again! Phil didn’t let Freddo down, going on to win his singles in an identical 6-0 score. Andrew Lane joined Phil at the top of the ranks by also not dropping a game. The ladies singles were a bit closer with Melissa Moulds pushed to win 6-3 and Helen Barry finally getting over the line in a long 6-4. Pauline Hill and Shaz Pike played Watervale’s Jenny Parish and Frankie Sandow, the visiting ladies taking the honours. It was all over before the straight doubles, but that didn’t stop the home team making a final charge. The top ladies had another dakdropper win, while Pauline and Shaz redeemed themselves in a big turnaround win. Shelley and Angela Battle had identical winning singles and doubles scores of two each! Top men Freddo and Rick Lamond had to fight off a very determined doubles pair in Spencer Budarick and Malcolm Parish to win a marathon 7-5 in what was the set of the day. Phil took young gun Scott McDonald under his wing to make sure he kept his record perfect for the day, and with Scott too scared to make a mistake, helped Phil win his lucky third dakdropper of the day. Sitting smugly at the bottom, Andrew M and Andrew L also won in a good 6-2. Final score Balaklava 22-137 defeated Watervale 2-51. Finals start next week, with Balaklava waiting to hear the other association results to see who they will play next week. Good luck for the finals!

Elaine WWBA champ The Wooroora Women’s Bowling Association held their singles and pairs championship finals at Port Wakefield on March 1 and 2. Monday was very windy, making bowling difficult. Tuesday was a much more pleasant day with the sun shining and a light breeze. Each club was represented in singles and fours; Balaklava, Hamley Bridge, Mallala, Owen, Port Wakefield and Two Wells. The singles champion came down to shots up, Elaine Cunningham of Balaklava, with steady bowling, showed the younger players how to concentrate when in a tight spot. Well done Elaine. Runner-up Bev Roney of Mallala went down by nine shots to Elaine, which did the damage, but well done also, Bev. The fours winners were Owen with eight points; skipper Gloria Wandel, third Helen Hocking, second Gwen Duncan and first Kathy Harkness. This team worked together – if one player was down, the other three made up for her. These ladies worked very well together.

The runners-up were Mallala with six points +28. Two other teams had six points, but Mallala had the most shots up. Skipper was Carol King, third Josie Curnow, second Helen Johnson and first Yvonne Howard. Thank you to Port Wakefield, who catered for all WWBA championships this pennant season. The winners of this championship will compete in the Region 8 Championships, to be held at Balaklava on March 28. – Gwenda Cheek, WWBA president

Lower North vs Clare Red

Northern Light Women

For the first time in many years, the NLWBA held Pennant Finals. The day was hosted by the Robertstown Bowling Club – thanks are extended for their hospitality, particularly the lavish afternoon tea! In the morning, Robertstown Green played Auburn Red in the elimination final. Robertstown Green was successful, going on to play in the second semi final in the afternoon. The other morning match was the first semi final between Saddleworth Blue and Riverton Green. This match was very entertaining with Saddleworth emerging the winners by one shot, 36 to 35 and proceeding to next week’s grand final. The second semi in the afternoon was between Robertstown Green and Riverton Green – extremely entertaining for the spectators. Riverton’s team, skippered by Enid Passehl, finished first with a lead of eight shots and with one end to play, Robertstown’s team skippered by Daph Kotz was eight shots up so it came down to the last end! It was a close measure which went Riverton’s way, giving them an overall win by one shot, 37 to 36. So, Riverton lost by one in the morning and won by one in the afternoon. Next week’s grand final between Saddleworth Blue and Riverton Green promises to be one of high quality bowling and a match not to be missed. It will be held at Robertstown Bowling Club at 9.30am, and all are welcome.

Croquet Results from March 3. Clare ventured to Balaklava with one player short, one of Balaklava girls filling in. The weather was kind and the court was in first class condition, making the balls roll for ages even with the slightest tap. This tests the skill of the person hitting the ball. In the top colours, Lynne and Chris got away to a very good start, but after the break Ruth and Ellie got the feel of the court and made up the score to 15 to 11. The second colours play was a little harder for Clare. They started off with a bang, making the first hoop in the first few shots, but then had trouble on the second and got stuck on the third only getting through in the last few minutes of play. Erika and Nancy took their time, splitting up their opponents time and time again, snaking through hoops in between. Balaklava made 16 to 3 which helped with the score. Golf Balaklava Men

It was just like the good ol’ days last Saturday, with the carpark full to bursting and vast herds of golfers moving majestically over the greensward, 66 players all out to win our 2-man Ambrose competition. Now, I must beg your indulgence from here on in, owing to the fact that several hands had a hand in writing team names in THE BOOK, while no hands had any hand in noting who won the event, the long drives, not even nearest the pins. Therefore, no lamentable attempts at levity, just the facts, ma’am. It looks as though the winners were Dale Maynard and Peter Stegge (64), ahead of second placers Simon Andrews and Damien Geyer (66.25), John Whitbread and John Agar (66.75) third. Time to plough into massed ranks of also-rans in order of achievement; P. Lamont/J. Bowden (67), Dr. T. Lemon/D. Robinson (67.25), R. Hart/L. Hart(67.75), R. Butterworth/J. Smyth (68.5), W. There were a couple of members who were glad they were not playing skins with Colin Doudle when he won Thursday’s stableford competition, with a magnificent 47 points. Colin, who put in one of his best games for quite a while, was only three over the card after 10 holes – and if that wasnt enough, two 80 plus year olds Max Grasby and Ian Rohde came in Equal second, along with Warren Isgar on 41pts . Other scores: Ian Ferguson 40, Wally Jackson and Bob Ahola 39, Ed Manning 38, Dave Russell and George Dahlitz 37, Roen Cameron and Ron Smith 36, Brian Cooper and Ron Collins 34, Doug Cooper, Noel Stringer, Len Usher, CliffApplebee and Roger Hahn 33, Ross Heinze and Lance Hatcher 32, John Riley and Rex Mortimer 31, Anton Noack and Wim Van Pelt 29. In a field of 29 players, Bar Manager Wally Jackson trimmed at bit off his handicap with a solid 43 points, winning Saturday’s stableford competition by a whisker from Len Usher 42, Wim Van Pelt, Ron Smith 41, Lance Hatcher, Ross Heinze 40 and Dave Russell on a count back with 38 – all ball winners. They can meet people from all over the state in a relaxed, informal country sport environment. Backyard Netball is particularly aimed at girls who might not be able to commit the time to club based netball in the city due to university contact time, part time work commitments and adjusting to Adelaide living. Girls can choose to nominate a team of nine, or nominate as a fill-in. To register, visit www.backyardnetball.com and leave your name, town of origin, mobile number, and e-mail address.

Australia’s leading hay exporter

Prepare for crop disease, warns SARDI Following a spike in crop diseases in Spring last year, SARDI’s plant and soil health team say acting now is the best line of defence to protect this year’s cereal, pulse and oilseed crops. SARDI pathologist Jenny Davidson said with a wide range of diseases built up by a wetter than average spring, preventative approaches are needed before sowing to put this year’s crop yields on track. Jenny’s team of pulse pathologists were kept busier than usual through spring and early summer diagnosing disease-infected oilseed and pulse crops – processing nearly double the case load usually seen in a year. “Despite the likelihood of disease carryover in soil, seed and stubble, a thoughtful approach to planning will help maintain crop yield and quality

against a background of higher than normal disease loads in the environment,” Jenny said. “This is a year when it could be really worthwhile to access diagnostic tests of seed and soil to know what’s ticking

away. A range of seed tests are available for legume diseases. “Keeping up with preventative seed treatments is highly recommended, and will help to slow the build up of foliar diseases in many crop types.

“Testing for cereal and legume root diseases in paddock soil, when reviewed with paddock history, will help to identify the best crops to cycle through crop rotations. “Growers of field

What grain producers now need is for the world to drink more beer and eat more bread! Not that CBH Grain is encouraging irresponsible behaviour, but I have come across some interesting facts on beer consumption which may be of interest in a sombre grain price environment. Unlike the average Aussie who tends to drink more beer in hard financial times, the rest of the world’s population cuts back on their beer consumption. This is particularly evident in China which is a very important market for Australian malt barley. Currently the slow down in beer consumption has been further exacerbated by cash-strapped governments increasing tax on beer.

weekly comment The most extreme case is in Russia and Ukraine. The Russian Duma increased the excise tax on beer by 200 per cent and on vodka by 10per cent. The Russian government explained that it was ‘in the interest of public health’. Personally, I would have thought they have got this increase the wrong way around! This increase has resulted

in a drastically reduced consumption of beer in 2009 and is forecasted to be lower again in 2010. Other examples include Greece where an increase of 20 per cent on their beer duty was announced as one of the measures to reduce the country’s huge budget deficit. Furtermore, at the beginning of this year Turkey increased its beer duty by The frontrunner in fertiliser Ph: 8415 1900

35 per cent and Serbia by 10. Here in Australia it has been reported tthe government is considering a review of the country’s complex excise duty system. The indications are tax rates on alcohol would rise progressively depending on the alcohol content of the drink but there is no doubt the intention is to increase revenue, so if you are a keen beer drinker, this is one to watch out for in the future. So if anyone gives you a hard time about having a quiet beer on a hot March night, please let them know you are not only helping the barley growers, you are also propping up the nation though taxes!

Riley snares a ‘hat trick’

tennis LEFT: Robert Lloyd in action for Owen/Grace Plains in Lower North senior tennis.

Nine-year-old Riley Chapman outclassed his older opponents and took a ‘hat trick’ for Lower North in Saturday’s U16s cricket match against Brinkworth/ Koolunga.
