Welcome to Balaklava After eight years without hearing the first cry of a newborn baby, no wonder it was a surprise for the staff at Balaklava hospital when heavily pregnant Krystal Cock came knocking at the door at 4.30am on Thursday April 5, ready to give birth to Albert William. After going into labour, Krystal and husband Hadyn began their journey from
their Bute home, travelling to their originally planned birth place of Ashford Hospital, but as contractions intensified, Krystal knew she wasn’t going to make it. “Going through Port Wakefield we thought about calling the ambulance but instead decided to keep going,” Krystal said. While driving through Balaklava, Hadyn decided to take Krystal to the hospital, even
though they knew a baby had not been delivered there for eight years. “I wouldn’t have lasted much longer, and it wasn’t long after we arrived that Albert was born.” Balaklava doctor Langton Nyoni delivered the 7 pound 4 ounce bundle of joy. n CONTINUED PAGE 2

but never thought it would happen,” Krystal said, who gave birth to her other two sons Xavier, 4 and Oscar, 2, at Ashford. Originally due on April 16, Krystal instructed her mum, Cherie Taylor from Balaklava, to travel to Bute to look after the boys when she went into labour. “Little did we know she could have stayed in Balaklava and we could have just dropped the boys off!” Krystal said.

Balco boosts hay into China
HAY exports to China are contributing to significant recent growth in the State’s trade sector. Minister for Trade, Tom Koutsantonis, said a breakdown of South Australia’s record-breaking export result in 2011 shows targeting Asian markets is paying huge dividends. Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show the value of goods exported overseas by South Australia in 2011 totalled a record $12 billion, up 29 per cent on the previous year. “Strong growth was recorded with both India
and China in 2011, reinforcing the government’s policy of supporting our exporters to target these emerging markets,” Mr Koutsantonis said. “These two destinations comprise more than a quarter of South Australia’s total export market and we will continue to target both of these economies in 2012 for both trade and investment. Export markets that experienced growth in 2011 compared with the previous year include China, up 40 per cent.
The value of goods exported overseas by South Australia in 2011 totalled a record $12 billion, up 29 per cent on the previous year.
“Our rural exports after years of drought are providing significant support to South Australia’s overall economy,” Mr Koutsantonis said.
ployed specialist international marketer, Tim Latchford, a few years ago specifically targeting the Chinese market. “Tim actively visits China about four times per year and works with the wide customer base there,” Mr Lawson said. “Tim and other representatives from Balco participate in and support dairy conferences there too.” Balco recently appealed to farmers to grow both oaten and wheaten hay this year in an effort to further ramp up exports to China. It is the Chinese dairy industry requiring the hay, given the country’s recent venture into providing children with a glass of milk every day, similar to an Australian initiative from the 1950-70s. “That’s why there’s been a big growth in the dairy industry,” Mr Lawson explained. “If we can get the hay, we’re sure there is more growth available into that market.”
South Australia to support jobs and our rural communities.” Balco general manager, Rob Lawson, said hay exports to China have followed a similar growth pattern in recent years. “Most of the increase would come from the mining industry but South Australia is definitely the biggest exporter of the hay product to China,” he explained. “Between Johnson’s at Kapunda and Balco, we are the two biggest exporters of hay into China. Hay exports are growing and the numbers are getting better.” While Balco’s Chinese export figures haven’t quite risen by 40 per cent, they do reflect the overall statewide export increase. “We would be in the order of a 20 to 25 per cent increase and a majority of the hay product is coming out of South Australia,” Mr Lawson said. “We see China as the growth market that we deal with.” The company em-

Meet the grand, grand, grand children BALAKLAVA’S Ray and Bev McCracken were thrilled when they became grandparents for the first time 26 months ago, with the arrival of Connor. He was the first child for Ray and Bev’s oldest daughter Cherie, and Grant Willmer of Balaklava. Six and a half months later, Ray and Bev welcomed Tahlia, born to daughter Leeanne and Travis Zerk. Everything was as it should be, with grandparents spoiling grandchildren and helping with babysitting.
Louise Michael reports: But more surprises were in store for Bev and Ray last year when they found out they were going to be grandparents again ... and again ... and again!. But this time, it was not only Cherie and Lee-anne who were expecting babies, but daughter-in-law Nikki as well. And they were all due within six weeks of each other. Leeanne and Travis had Mason Ray on
February 21, Cherie and Grant had Curtis Tate on February 27 and finally on April 3, exactly six weeks to the day, Scott and Nikki had Chase Noel. Ray and Bev are “stoked” with their latest “three boys”, and when everyone is together, it’s wonderful, although sometimes noisy! The McCracken clan spent some time together over Easter to celebrate their newest family additions. And you couldn’t wipe the smiles from their faces!

September start for Buckland RESIDENTIAL growth north of Adelaide will gain strong momentum following a $76 million commitment by Walker Corporation to develop the first stage of the master planned community in Adelaide’s north at Buckland Park. Construction of the community, to be known as Riverlea, will begin on the project in September. Walker Communities general manager, Michael Eggington, said the master planned would offer South Australians the opportunity of
a fresh start, an affordable lifestyle and aspirational living. He predicted the community, on completion, would be 50 per cent larger than the city of Mount Gambier. “Investment in the first stage of the master planned community at Buckland Park signifies Walker’s commitment to Adelaide’s future growth and our confidence in the northern suburbs as a significant part of that process,” Mr Eggington said. “This project will be home to
innovation and a fresh start for thousands of South Australian families over the next 25 years.” The new community at Buckland Park is 30 minutes from the Adelaide CBD in a region earmarked for significant residential and employment growth over the next 25 years. Between September this year and June 2013, more than 630,000 cubic metres of soil will be moved on the site to create 140 allotments across stage one. Walker has approval for the
initial infrastructure works including providing water, power and gas services to the site. These works will start this autumn. The Buckland Park community will incorporate walking trails, bike paths and nature reserves set against the Gawler River. Walker is working alongside the State government and the City of Playford Council to build a new community that will include schools, neighbourhood centres,
a district centre, sporting facilities and public transport connecting the community and providing linkages to Elizabeth, Salisbury and the CBD. The company is looking to employ best practice in urban design, town planning and community development. “Walker Corporation will work with the local community throughout the 25 years it will take to build the masterplanned community at Buckland Park,” Mr Egginton said.
Holiday jam is ‘unavoidable’
BMX stars attract crowd For the past 10 weeks, around 20 young BMX enthusiasts had the opportunity to ride with local BMX amateur rider, Nathan Parker, at the Balaklava skate park. The weekly ride, followed by a sausage sizzle, was organised by members of the combined churches of Balaklava, led by Todd
McPharlin and Kevin Marriott. Two weeks ago, riders had a special treat as former Blyth resident and now professional BMX rider, Ryan Lloyd, put on an exciting BMX display (above), including jumping over some children lying on the ground. Ryan is now based in Adelaide but his reputation is well-known within local
BMX circles. Ryan’s presence brought a large crowd of around 50 to the skate park to witness his amazing riding skills. After the demonstration, Ryan spoke to the crowd about his riding career. Todd and Kevin were pleased with the weekly turnout and hope to run a similar event next summer.
DESPITE the huge volume of traffic banking up at Port Wakefield, as it does at the beginning and end of Easter each year, drivers were predominantly well behaved over the weekend. SAPOL Yorke and Mid North Local Service Area (LSA) Senior Sergeant, Martin Bazeley, said with increased police presence on the roads given the huge rise in traffic, he was generally pleased with driver behaviour. “Other than the bottleneck at Port Wakefield, things went really well,” he said. “We had a couple of crashes in the LSA but otherwise, we were happy with the results from the weekend. “Despite the large volume of people coming to the area, there was no spike in crime or traffic incidents.” Sgt Bazeley said SAPOL and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) have an ongoing agreement to share the management of traffic at Port Wakefield on weekends but the subsequent banking of traffic at that stretch of road was unavoidable.

WITH Farm Day fast approaching on May 26 and 27 this year, country families are been sought to teach city folk a thing or to about country life. FarmDay is an event that offers a city family the opportunity to spend a day on a working farm to learn how farmers produce food and fibre. A city family is matched with a farm family for a day, where they share a fun day of fun, friendship and understanding. A Primary Industry Education Foundation (PIEF) report shows 75 per cent of school age children believe cotton socks to be an animal product and 45 per cent are unaware basic lunchbox items like bananas, bread and cheese originate from farms. FarmDay is a great way to combat the gap in knowledge school children have of where their food and fibre come from. For more information or to register, call 02 6766 5222.

Pan to cast its spell
balaklava Balaklava Community Arts has named its cast for Peter Pan. The cast has many young actors, with Brittany Heslop as Peter Pan, Chelsea McPharlin as Wendy Darling, and the very fierce Gib Palmer as Hook. The majority of the cast are children, but there has been some other “young at heart” actors cast. I thought they might be more suitable as the Lost Boys but nevertheless, Ian Langdon and Andrew Parker are cross-dressing as chorus girls, no sorry, as pirate, and then indian, chorus singers. And the biggest darling of them all, Marty Brice, is playing the dad, Mr Darling. He will also have a costume change to the type of role we’d normally expect from him, that as the Indian Chief. Director Kelly Bickle is not dressing up but is keeping an eye on her crew. Well done to everyone on their selection, and we look forward to seeing the end result.
Eisteddfod news
And speaking of the Community Arts, entry forms for the 2012 Eisteddfod are out. The Eisteddfod is on July 27-29 and is getting bigger every year. Entries close Friday, April 27 so look out for forms at local businesses. Or contact Trish at info@balakla-

Searching for ‘Seven Stars’ DO you remember the Seven Stars Hotel, once the hub of the small township of Redbanks? What did it look like, how big was it and where was it located? A group of students from the Advanced Archaeology Field School of Flinders University is hoping to come up with answers to these and many other questions, setting up camp at the site on Tuesday. Mallala Museum secretary, Laura Parsons, is thrilled the site has gained interest. “They have been interested for quite a while, and preparations for the dig have been on the boil for a couple of years, so it will be interesting to see what they find,” Laura said. Information supplied to the Plains Producer by Laura reveals the town of Redbanks was surveyed by Mr W Smith in 1858. The SA Gazetteer for 1867 reported the township then contained a blacksmith’s shop, a wheelwright shop, a store and post office, a chapel ‘almost finished’ and a busy hotel called ‘The Seven Stars’. The town then had a population of about 30 people. The building was situated north of the intersection on the Mallala-Gawler Rd near the current township. The premises comprised a huge square building and included 14 guest rooms and lots of chimneys, a long bar, a licensed billiard room and a dining room with a large jarrah dining table. It became a stopover where bullocks were watered and fed and the bullockies enjoyed socialising.
‘
We would love to hear from anyone who has a photo of – Mallala Museum secretary, the hotel Laura Parsons
’
Sally Crowther reports:
To water the horses and bullocks a quarter of an acre from an adjoining neighbour was bought and a well dug. The hotel had a large square underground tank to provide water for house use. A wooden trough near the road was hewn from a large single tree. The stables were about two chains long, all made from local materials. The hotel occupied a
AERIAL view of Redbanks – Google Maps.
Digging up history at Redbanks prominent spot on the road travelled by the bullock wagons on the way to and from the Burra copper mines. Shearers working up north on the big pastoral stations often rode on the bullock drays. Transport was scarce and entertainment was rare on the stations. Some of these shearers came only as far as the hotel. They spent the weekend, and a week or month’s wages and were then ready to go back shearing again with the bullock drays returning to the Burra. The cardsharps and prostitutes from Adelaide would know when the
shearers were coming and would be booked into the Seven Stars, waiting. Local stories about the site today are quite exotic, recalling the building was constructed with broken fragments of coloured glass mixed into the mortar so it appeared to glitter from a distance At the height of its popularity the top storey operated virtually as a brothel and gambling saloon. In later years it was a venue for social events and it was used for voting and as a hall. James Hall, who had bought this
property in 1903, later demolished the building and in the 1920s used the timber and iron to build a mouseproof barn. About 1958 the licence at the Seven Stars Hotel was transferred to the Shandon Hotel in Adelaide. The jarrah dining table from the “Seven Stars Hotel” is the sole item that still remains of that significant place and is on display in the Mallala Museum. “The dining table is the only item we have, so we hope any items found in the dig can be donated to
the museum,” Laura said. About 25 students and staff have been digging over the site this week in an effort to discover more about the now demolished building. A geo-phys examination of the site late last year proved to be of limited use as the soil has been compacted by years of farming activity. The site has potential to cast light on aspects of the economic and social history of the Redbanks community during the late 19th century, particularly since it is located on a major thoroughfare and communications route. As such, broader social and economic trends may be well represented and signified by changes in material culture. Of key interest are questions about the daily lives of those living at, or passing through, the Seven Stars Hotel. Visitors to the site are welcome, keeping in mind this is a busy road and care should be taken by anyone wanting to observe the students at work. Various groups in Mallala have kindly agreed to offer assistance to the visitors during their stay in Mallala. The students are hoping to return to the site later in the year to undertake further work at the “Seven Stars” site. The students shared a presentation of their work at Mallala Museum’s monthly meeting. Laura said the museum committee would love to hear from anyone who has a photo of the hotel as there are currently none in the Museum’s collection.

Drive ... And the bride arrived AWay Sale Demo
GAIL arrives by ambulance for her wedding to Tim Whyte. Greeting her are her parents, June and George MacLucas.
... By ambulance!
Gail and Tim made it a special date for their Whyte wedding Louise Michael reports: Once upon a time, back in the late 80s, in a land not so far away called Whitwarta, lived a couple who were struggling to get their trucking business up and running. They did it tough, but eventually got things together. The couple, Tim Whyte and Gail MacLucas, were finally on track when fate dealt them a cruel blow. On March 31 last year, Tim was driving into Balaklava, just near the hospital, when he felt unwell and pulled over. He got out of his car and collapsed. His neighbour, the late Sharon Hoepner and her daughter Hannah came along, and loaded him into their car and drove

Ambulance volunteer for 22 years, she asked if she could use an ambulance as her bridal car. Approval, believed to be the first in SA, was given and Gail and her sister Heather Cailes, arrived for the wedding at Balaklava St John Ambulance Centre in an ambulance. Gail’s other attendants, including Tim’s daughter Candi Marshall, who was matron of honour, arrived in the first aid vehicle. Tim and his best man, Gail’s son Aaron, arrived in Tim’s XA GT Falcon, with Tim’s other attendants being driven by local Les Gehan. Gail was “given away” by her parents, George and June MacLucas, in a lovely ceremony in the ambulance centre carport. The pair exchanged special wedding rings, which had been made from bushes taken from wheels of a 1974 truck, the first one they had owned. Tim and Gail also had a special candle at the ceremony with a photo on it of the person who had saved Tim last year, Sharon Hoepner, who sadly lost her battle with cancer mid last year. After the ceremony, the newlyweds and 140 guests celebrated with a reception at the Terminus Hotel. And after all that excitement, we hope they all live happily ever after!

Our ‘living legend’ Anita’s special award

Bec O’Brien reports: Lower Light resident, Anita Trenwith, has many strings to her bow – mother, award winning science teacher, horsewoman and now living legend. Last month the 36-year-old, who has been teaching science at Salisbury High School since 1998 and is part of the school’s Special Education Unit, was honoured by Salisbury Council as one of its Living Legends. The Living Legends Awards were established in 2005 as a way for the council to recognise the city’s strong community spirit and say ‘thank you’ to those who were doing great things in the council area to actively promote the positive qualities of life in the north. Anita was presented with her award at a ceremony on March 7 and says the announcement came as a shock. “I didn’t even know I was nominated until I

got the congratulations phone call,” she said. “So it was a surprise for me that someone nominated me (and) I still don’t know who it was. “It has been an honour to be nominated and recognised in such a way. “There are some truly inspirational people that have been ‘Living Legends’, (and) the award is a great way to promote the positive things happening in the area.” Last year Anita’s science work with the Special Education Unit at
Salisbury High earnt her the top prize in the 2011 Australian Museum Eureka Awards for Science or Maths teaching. As part of her work she has also established a Stage 1 Agricultural class, and uses her Lower Light property to help the students practically apply the theory they are learning in class. “The students learn about electric circuits at school and then apply that knowledge putting up electric fences,” she said.
“They learn theory about factors that impact on plant growth and then apply that knowledge managing a section of the farm and cropping the land. “They calculate costs and seeding rates, they also have to monitor it for weeds and pests and then arrange to slash and bale the hay.
“Agriculture has now become very popular and in only its second year this year, the class had a waiting list.” Anita said the class last year featured on the ABC and a webisode of the filming could be viewed at http://vimeopro.com/ decd/webisodes.
Anita has established a new agricultural class, using her Lower Light property as a base for the students’ learning. aster break usually means fishing for our family. Sometimes there’s a whiting or two to share, sometimes... not. After many perplexing experiences launching and retrieving the boat at a public marina, I have decided ‘boat ramp’ should be called ‘magical area of man-metamorphosis’. Something inexplicable occurs when a man embarks on a fishing trip. It’s somewhat like a primal stirring thought to have been extinguished between Cro-Magnon period and now. Could it be a carnal hunting instinct that causes this surge of territorial behaviour not seen anywhere else? What turns our gentlemen into competitive sea dogs? I’ll set the scene. We’re all sitting lazily around the table looking out to sea, sighing out a breath of relaxation, tinged with a little-too-much lunch. Maybe a nap is in order? No! All of a sudden someone looks at their watch, checks the tide guide and springs to action. It’s battle stations with the skipper retrieving deck hands and sourcing bait, rods and enough snacks to keep the kids happy until we reach our bag limit. Then he cries out “we have to go now or we’ll miss the turn of the tide!” Never have I seen such a rush made to get a boat ready. Is there only one fish left in the ocean? Will we starve if we don’t catch it, and what of the Kiosk? I hear there’s a good living to be made serving those who can’t catch their own! Once at the boat ramp, there’s etiquette. You let others retrieve their boats from the water before pushing in and chasing after this one fish you’ve smelt out from the shack. That’s all easily forgotten the minute toes touch the tepid water lapping the ramp. No, our men are so eager to find seafood they would pick the boat up and lift it over the heads of the retrieving parties if they could. Even the talk between boaties is pseudocompetitive. Courteous greetings of, “how’d you go?” are laced with cynicism and disbelief or just pure jealousy. I’m by no means restricting this to men, well, not entirely. The difference is women ask other women where they got ‘those fabulous shoes’, and we’d congratulate them on the acquisition and in return the purchaser would share information, happily. But fishing people? Oh no, no way! GPS marks and favourite spots are closely guarded; one thinks CIA has less security surrounding some of their secrets. Fishing ... here I was thinking it was a relaxing pastime!
There’s a catch to relaxing!

Gala evening as Shamus trail fundraiser FUNDRAISING is starting to become serious as plans for the Shamus Liptrot cycle trail firm up. The memorial trail, a project of Balaklava Area Committee, has received a positive report after soil tests, meaning the first stage from Balaklava to the golf club is closer to becoming reality. Halbury is the next destination. As planning continues, so does the job of raising cash to fund the project.
Ta k e o u t your diary and mark off Saturday, May 26, as it will be a night not to be missed with The Gala Evening, a major fundraiser for “Shamo’s Trail.” Venue is Balaklava Town Hall, from 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
Tables seat 10 people, and a three course meal will be provided with selected complimentary beverages for a ticket price of $70. Entertainment will also be provided with band, Nikai, and also an auction later in the night. For more details, go to shamusliptrot.biketrail@hotmail.com – or phone Sophie on 0430 905 461. Tickets will be available at Tads, Balaklava, later today (Thursday).

Kelly Reichelt, Tom Jenkin, Hayden Sampson and Hillivi Harrison.
Clare’s winning day Gorgeous Autumn sun greeted racegoers at the Clare Easter Races on Saturday. Fashion and fine food were the order of the day, with Tania Day (right) winning the Fashion on the field competition.
THE third annual sheepdog trial will be held at Tarlee on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. There is a change of format to this year’s event, with two separate trials run at the same time. The SA Yard Dog Association will hold a yard dog trial in the paddock next to the Catholic Church, while the SA Working Sheepdog Association will hold a three sheep arena trial on the oval nearby.
“It is a very rare chance for spectators to have the opportunity to experience border collies battling it out with kelpies in a two-trial program,” event organiser, Janice De Gennaro said. “Spectators will also see the skill and tenacity required to draft and work a flock of sheep through yards and into a truck in the yard dog trial.” Mrs De Gennaro said the event’s
location was a great drawcard. “It is one of the few times a trial is held so close to the city and suburbs,” she said. “We have a children’s playground next to the arena and the local community is catering for spectators and competitors with all profits going back into the community of Tarlee. A car-boot sale will be held on Saturday, from about 8am.”
CLARE Valley wholegrain pasta producers, Pangkarra Foods, has achieved critical acclaim for its products after winning three medals at the 2012 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show last month. Pangkarra Foods was awarded a silver medal for its wholegrain spaghetti, a bronze medal for its wholegrain pappardelle and a bronze medal for its wholegrain penne. The family business, which was launched exactly 12 months ago, has since attracted praise from various retailers, industry chefs,
a n d n o w, some of the leading fine food judges in Australia. “We were very proud to have our pasta awarded in such a prestigious show,” Pangkarra’s Katherine Maitland (pictured) said. “The Sydney Royal Fine Food Show displays some of the finest
produce from around Australia, and to be recognised as one of the best pastas in the country, is a huge accomplishment for us.” “As the only premium stone milled wholegrain pasta entered in the show, we were up against a lot of other Australian pasta brands which were not wholegrain, so it is a testament to the product that it is not only better for you, but is better in taste. “We were very happy with the results and we will continue to produce award winning pasta from our backyard in the Clare Valley.”

BALAKLAVA’s Glenn Dawson flies for a big mark against Mallala last year. He was a huge influence in Balaklava’s win over Virginia in the grand final. Can he do it again in season 2012?
. Football and netball program – Page 21
HE unpredictability of the 2012 Adelaide Plains Football League season makes it one of the most anticipated for a number of years. Two new coaches, Ash Barnett at Hamley Bridge and Steve Lubcke for Mallala, step into the cauldron and both are keen to make an impact this year. As the scent of freshly cut grass, deep heat and hot pies swirl through the mid-autumn air this weekend, two cracking fixtures greet local footy fans across the district. Balaklava and Virginia meet in a grand final rematch at Ralli Park, the respective squads featuring extremely similar personnel to last year. Virginia coach, Greg Phillips, has had six months to plot his revenge against the Peckers after his side’s loss to Balaklava in the season decider in September last year. Phillips knows a change of structure and game plan is required to topple the taller Pecker squad. It’s all about the delivery of that plan from his Rams on the park if they are to pick up a kick-start victory this weekend. Balaklava coach, Stuart Lamond, has been urging his team
Bomber coach Ash Barnett Mallala coach Steve Lubcke
to guard against complacency this year, demanding further improvement from the squad. The Peckers are the hunted and Lamond recognised the undeniable fact other clubs will be out to knock them off this year. There are big wraps surrounding Virginia’s recruit, Marek Sajewicz, while a fullyfit Caleb Howell has an outstanding record against Balaklava in previous years. Peckers’ pick-up, Max Doherty, has displayed glimpses of his nous around the stoppages in the pre-season and will also be looking to impress at his new club. At Long Plains, a
hopeful United hosts Mallala, a team keen to rekindle its recent dominance of the league. United has an interesting first three matches, with Hummocks Watchman Eagles and Hamley Bridge following the round one fixture. Tigers coach, Travis Opitz, has outlined these matches as very winnable contests, which will be key to setting up their season. Mallala have a tougher draw in comparison but coach, Steve Lubcke, would back his lads in regardless. Lubcke has announced he will be developing the senior squad from within its current ranks, whether this means a leaner, rebuilding year or an instant return to glory is yet to be seen. Most punters would be backing Mallala but it’s not out of the realms of possibility for United to grind out a win here. The remaining three clubs, Hamley Bridge, Two Wells and Hummocks Watchman Eagles, will wait another week before gracing the ground. There is plenty of excitement surrounding both Hamley Bridge and Two Wells, touted as the two big improvers of 2012. • Continued Page 13

I
t is hard to believe we are about to kick off with our beloved football again. It seems only like yesterday we played last year’s grand final. Season 2012 is shaping up to be another exciting year for the Adelaide Plains Football League. There has been some minor fine tuning, but basically it will be business as usual. • Doug Tallboy is once again in charge of the men in white. Doug informs us umpire numbers are fantastic and we look forward to a young, fit and enthusiastic panel. The APFL lost a couple of senior umpires to other leagues and we thank them for their dedicated service. We look forward to new the new umpires who will take the Brad Busch welcomes three new field in season 2012. members to the APFL board. • Peter Butterfield has once

If you know anyone interested in playing senior or junior colts please contact your local club or Peter Butterfield. These lads are our up and coming grass-roots footballers.
• The APFL board also has made a few personnel changes. This year we have two new office bearers and a new board member. Deb Robertson has taken over the reins as secretary and Cathy Lewis will be treasurer. Michael Coe has also taken a director’s role. The board is: President - Brad Busch; Vice President - Rocky Musolino; Secretary - Deb Robertson; Treasurer - Cathy Lewis ; Recorder/clearance officer - Andy Seccafien; Directors - Colin Jenner, Martyn Bell, Michael Coe; Umpire’s Coordinator - Doug Tallboy; Tribunal Secretary - Greg Tucker. On behalf of the league I wish the board every success. My thanks for putting your valuable time together for our league. • Landmark Cup this year
will be hosted by the APFL and played on the June long weekend at Balaklava After winning this for the last two years let’s see if we can take the trifecta. Once again our troops will be led by Andy Michael. • This year the APFL again will hold its ANZAC round, which is to be played on the weekend of April 28. • Finals venues this season are: Grand Final - Mallala; Preliminary Final - Balaklava; 2nd Semi Final - Hamley Bridge; 1st Semi Final - Lochiel I would like to wish all football and netball clubs every success. May the best teams win. I urge everyone to get involved with your local club or come along to the matches and enjoy another great year of football on the Adelaide Plains.

New faces to excite netball IN keeping with tradition, Mallala Netball Club has taken over the executive reins of APNA for 2012-13 seasons. President is Dawn Buckby and Secretary Sonia Angus. There is no A6 competition this year due to lack of team nominations. All clubs have fielded senior teams in every grade, bar Viriginia which has A1, 4 and 5. Junior B and C2 grades have been filled, while there will be byes in C1 and D grades. Mallala has two A3 teams, with the away team playing as Virginia. Mallala’s new A1 coach is Katie Krieg who will coach the regulars along with new players Emma Tiller, Kerryn Obst and Amy Martin. Balaklava, with new A1 coach Tess Pollard, has lost four A1 players from last season- Michelle Williams, Eliza Cottle, Gaynor Tink and Chelsea Koch. However this gives other players an opportunity to move up the ranks. Some players returning to the club are Sophie VanKleef, Jane Harding, Tess Wiseman and Eleisa Hancock. Balaklava is fielding a second junior B Grade team, which will play
as Virginia. Long Plains has good senior numbers but may struggle with juniors, although they have filled four of five grades. Long Plains has set a new trend, having changed uniform from the bodysuit to dresses with shorts underneath. Two Wells has very strong numbers again and has had to turn players away. They have fielded teams in every grade except D2 and are looking forward to another good season. Hummocks has an almost unchanged A1 team which won the 2011 premiership, with Sarah Young back in for Erin Brundell. Sam Nicholls continues as playing coach of the A1s. Last year’s B Grade juniors, Caitlyn Moulds and Ashleigh Williams, have been promoted to A2s. Secretary, Bonnie Nicholls, advises they have had their best numbers at senior trainings for some years, which “is a good headache to have.” The juniors may face a challenging year as many are quite young for their grades, but they will step up to the challenge. Hamley Bridge has a new A1 star
n Erin Brundell, Hummocks, gets some close attention from Balaklava centre Gaynor Tink in last year’s A1 grand final, won by Hummocks. Both will be missing from A1 netball this year. in player/coach Lee Barnett, wife of A Grade football coach Ash. There are a couple of new senior recruits from Kapunda, along with new A2 coach, former Balaklava coach, Craig Cox. Hamley had a trial match against Goolwa recently, and after a very positive pre-season, the club is looking forward to a very successful year.
Virginia has had a good response to calls for players, with three senior and two junior teams entered. The club has good junior D grade numbers which is encouraging. The club has had a change of executive and new Secretary Lisa Masson is on a mission to form one strong netball/football club at Virginia.
• From Page 11 For the men (and women) in orange, green or whatever colour they are wearing on the day, it looms as a good year. Umpiring co-ordinator, Doug Tallboy, reported good numbers at umpire training. Average age of the A grade umpires is 24, with an influx of rookies taking up the whistle this year. Brenton Prouse and Will Hodgetts have headed to Northern Areas and Yorke Peninsula football leagues. At junior level, both senior colts and junior colts matches will apply the “mercy rule” which returns this season. The mercy rule allows teams to switch players once a large margin is established to even up the remainder of the match. If a junior colts team gets out to an eight-goal margin at half time or three quarter time, the rule is applied, while the rule is applied when the deficit becomes 12 goals in a senior colts match.

HUNGRY for more success, Balaklava has enjoyed a productive pre-season and is keen for round one. A grade coach, Stuart Lamond, said the senior squad’s early endeavour has been impressive. “Supporters will see a team striving for more success and to defend their title,” Lamond said. It has been the predominant message throughout the start of the year. “The importance for us is to continue to improve and also guarding against complacency,” Lamond said. “We’ve obviously had success last year but there’s work still to be done to make sure we can add to that success. “From my point of view, the hunger for more success from the group is definitely there. “Everyone wants to continue on and make the most of the opportunity we have at the moment.” The Peckers took on Willaston and Berri in their two trial matches before Easter, Lamond satisfied with his squad’s performances. “Certainly the Willaston trial was a good hit-out against a team that seemed to be a bit bigger and stronger than us,” he said. “We played a lot of kids that day but at the Berri trial we had something a bit closer to our normal set-ups, so I’ve been happy. Virginia APFL Undaunted, stronger Rams look to future EXPERIENCED Virginia coach, Greg Phillips, has dusted himself off from two consecutive grand final defeats and prepared his team for another shot at that elusive flag this season. The club has featured in the last three finals series but hasn’t taken the major prize since 1998.
CALEB Powell ... a force again.
“We’ve come a fair way but we just haven’t won the one that counts,” Phillips said. The club has been steadily strengthened both on and off the field and he believes it has a positive future, both short and long-term. On the field is where his main focus is though and the senior squad, which has remained relatively stable in the off-season, has been put through its paces. “I think if we can come in a bit fitter and stronger, we can build from there,” Phillips said. He believed the team is much fitter now than it was at the same time last year. “I think I can really see the improvement in fitness and it’s starting to show already,” Phillips said. While his focus isn’t on the recent grand final defeats, Phillips said changes are needed if his team is to lift the premiership cup this season. “I’m going to bring some other structures in to counter the strengths of other sides,” he said. “I thought we countered Mallala

Trials against Salisbury North, Kilburn and Freeling highlighted Phillips’ push for more fitness, the coach pleased with the way his squads ran out the matches and remained competitive. Gun players such as Caleb Howell, Troy Wilkey, Matt Young, and Graham Rigney were missing from the game against Freeling but the young Rams stood up. Phillips praised his players for their efforts to date. “I just think it has been a whole team effort, I think everyone has really improved and I want to give them all a pat on the back,” he said. “Everyone’s putting their hand up and wanting to play, which I think is fantastic.”

NEW COACH SEEKS COLLECTIVE EFFORT:
Magpies build on solid base CONSOLIDATION coupled with junior development has been earmarked for Mallala this season, A grade coach, Steve Lubcke, satisfied with the senior squad at his disposal. Lubcke has been drumming a thirst for the contest into his players in the preseason. “From my perspective, hopefully our supporters see a competitive side that is hard at the ball and the contest,” he said. “It’s one of our core values, that defensive part of the contest.” Developing that attitude takes a lot of hard work but it will be pivotal to his team’s success this year. “It’s the approach to the contest and the ball is what I’m trying to impress on the playing group, regardless of the situation, whether we’re up or down,” Lubcke said. “I want to see consistency in the performance across those key areas.” The young Magpies wait-
ing in the wings can also expect to be called on this season. “We’re going to have quite a few juniors coming through, so my main aim at the club is to build upon what Keith Earl has done over the last seven years,” Lubcke said. “He has a great foundation he has put in place.” The club’s two trials against North Clare and Loxton also satisfied. “It’s not so much the form but more the way the team went about it,” Lubcke said. “I was quite happy with what we did in the two trials.” Tuning the team’s dynamics into a game style to suit has been another area of focus in the summer months. “I started the guys in late January and just worked on our processes,” Lubcke said. “We’re trying to be more efficient with our ball movement and also focussed on our defensive setups and the way we attack offensively.” He believed the whole senior squad would need to

take some of the responsibility if they are to return back to the top tier. “I think our improvement will come as a collective and that’s including people like Liam (Whitwell), Joel (Montgomerie) and Jason (Earl), they have to improve as well as the juniors we’re bringing in,” Lubcke said. There are plenty of young lads putting their hat in the ring for round one selection. “Troy Algar and Ben Martin, are a couple of younger

ones who will certainly start in the A’s,” Lubcke said. “Our ruck will be based around Will Farrelly, he’s only 19. I’m looking for a lot of improvement out of Dale McLean and Jake Birchmore, we will be looking to develop him further too. “That’s some of the younger ones coming through who will be getting game time and giving them a chance to learn their football.” The overall goal is to assemble a team of all-round
strength, as opposed to being particularly strong in one area. As for recruiting, Lubcke was satisfied with the group he has inherited from Earl. “We’re going with what we had,” he said.“It’s a consolidation year as far as I look at it.” Of the new faces, Ben Moffatt returns to the club, while Jack Dixon and Leigh Gray come across from the RAAF base. Lachlan Dowdy, from country Victoria, has also recently started work in the area.

More wins from sustained effort CONSISTENCY and more improvement are the two areas outlined by United A grade coach, Travis Opitz, if the Tigers are to make a second successive finals series. “We won eight games last year and lost about three by less than a kick, so it would have made a bit of difference to the table if we had won those,” Opitz said. “This year, we’re aiming to win another four games on top of that, so it would be good to get 12 wins. “I know that’s aiming fairly high but if we could win 10 games, it gets you in the finals.” The senior squad is being heavily drilled on disposal of the footy in recent weeks. “We’ve been trying to work a little bit harder on our skills,” Opitz said. “Our foot skills let us down a little bit last year. “We’ve been doing a bit of work on our core strength, with gym circuits and using our gym a bit more. “It’s just to get the lads a bit stronger through the body, especially some of the younger local guys, who have been quite promising. “They just need to build up a bit.” United went down in both its trials against Southern Eagles and Paskeville but

the coach, now in his third consecutive year in the role, was impressed with the fight in the Tigers. After the club’s B grade fell about 10 goals behind after three quarters against the Eagles, the A grade came out and almost levelled the scores by the end of the sixth and final term. “Our A grade pretty much took over and outplayed them a bit,” Opitz said. “We would have been four or five short of our strongest side.” United was missing 12 against Paskeville but remained in touch with the Magpies. “It was tough but the lads fought hard and were competi-

tive,” Opitz said. “Hopefully we can maintain that through the year.” Pre-season began in early January, which featured a lot of interval running work and game simulation exercises. Usually known for a marquee signing each year, Opitz said the responsibility of lifting the club to the top four again this season lies with the current squad. “They’ve got to do the jobs themselves, we can’t rely on recruiting big name players,” he said. “The kids we’ll have

TWO WELLS supporters can expect their team to play a new, attacking brand of football this season. After a disappointing 2011, A grade coach, Mark Thomson, said there were two changes he would particularly like to see come the end of the year. “The way we play footy as well as the position on the ladder we hope to end up in,” he said. “I think we were a bit negative and too defensive last year. “We will be looking to attack a bit more and that’s mainly because of the people we have at the club.” Those people include the marquee signing of former Sydney and Sturt ruckman, Simon Feast, who comes across from Great Southern club, Langhorne Creek. “With Feasty on board now, he’s taken over a lot of the centre square and stoppages, so that’s one area in particular I think we will improve this year,” Thomson said. The Roosters have a connection to Sturt through a former board member, whose son plays at the club. “August last year, we decided to go out and ask a few questions to a lot of different players and Feasty was one of

Former Two Wells junior “We had a game last year
where our whole team had an average age of 18 and a half and we had minus 13 points for the day, which is good for the club,” Thomson explained. “Now, a lot of them are in the 20 to 23 age bracket, they’ve played their 50 to 90 games and it’s probably time they really stepped up.” “We have a group of about 14 in that bracket, we’ve got Feasty on board, a couple from Salisbury West and Jared Allmond back, so they’re going to add a lot of experience.” “With that in mind, I would
think we would be a lot better than last year.” It has been a long preseason for the squad. “We’ve done a lot of fitness work this year, starting on November 28 for two nights a week,” Thomson said. “We’ve also applied a lot of game plan work on our forward structure. “Last year we covered a lot of defensive skills and I think we’ve got that aspect of our game under control.” Trial game form also outlined some areas needing work ahead of the Roosters’ first game on April 21. “Our fitness was very impressive but our skill level, for a quarter or so, let us down but you’ve got to expect that from lads who haven’t played footy since last year,” Thomson said. “Our main thing we’ve been worried about was our forward entries and that probably showed up in the trial, so hopefully we can address that over the next couple of weeks as well.” Dylan Wise, Theo Markou and Luke Godfrey are three rookies who can expect a callup early in the season. Until then, it’s just a waiting game. “They’re like cats on a hot tin roof,” Thomson said.

The former owner of the local hotel has recruited strategically, targeting a mix of quality imports and former locals, who would restore a sense of self-respect at the club. “I think it’s been a big thing that’s been missing,” Barnett said. “At the end of the day, Hamley Bridge Football Club will be here a lot longer than the rest of us, so we want to give something back this year.” After six successive seasons sitting in seventh on the ladder, Barnett knows fourquarter efforts are needed to reverse that trend. “We’ve got to be competitive for the full game. It’s something we’ve lacked,” he said. “We also have to play a style of footy that will be competitive for four quarters.” While there has been an influx of talent, there were some tough decisions to be made at the end of 2011. “I had no input in the players who were here before but I’m totally responsible for any player who has come to the club this year,” Barnett said. “I’ve backed proven runners and the club may

have fallen into the trap of recruiting mates of mates and as a result, recruited the wrong people. “The big thing this year is we have recruited some great players, so we need the locals to improve around them. “Doing the homework on the guys we did have here, it was my job to make the call and I didn’t think they were the right players for the club. Considering the loss of up to a third of the A grade team from last year, the club has countered those departures with quality recruits includ-

ing midfielders Craig Taylor, Craig Young and Valor Thach, forwards Nathan Flynn and Shane Hanson, and utility, Kirk Heberle. Heberle and Hanson are assistant coaches this season. “The goal is to get the local guys back involved and the guys we’ve recruited, we’re looking to keep longterm,” Barnett said. Trial games against Kilburn, Salisbury West and a win over Goolwa/Port Elliot yielded promising results. “The feedback from years gone by is the boys weren’t fit

and the commitment wasn’t there, so we put the acid on them straight up, if they were willing to put the time and effort into it.” It has been a gruelling time for the senior squad, including seven weeks of boxing sessions at the Northside facility. Hamley Bridge local and Central District assistant coach, Luke McCabe, has also helped in the pre-season. “It was sensational because guys of his experience don’t grow on trees, so we were lucky to have him
around the place,” Barnett said. “Hopefully we might get a game out of him, you never know your luck.” Barnett was impressed with the way his squad responded to the pre-season roster. There have been a few young Bombers pressing for a spot come round one. “Young Rhys Darwin, Kynan Hewitt and Sam Collins are three who stood out in the trial games, showing they can match it with the big boys,” Barnett said.

Fours Champions of Champions won both of their games also – a fitting finale for the Two Wells team, representing Wooroora Women, as their club leaves Region 8 to join with their men in the Northern Metropolitan Region next season. Barbara Lee-Archer, Pam Prescott, Margaret Maylin and Margaret Gameau played well in both games. Hutt & Hill River were the runners-up. Daphne Kotz, Robertstown played in the Fours, her daughter, Sherene, played with Daph’s daughter-in-law, Jodi Kotz in the winning Pairs. Congratulations to all players on a great day of bowls. Overtime thriller costs Plains girls premiership

Plains Under 12 Boys refine skills The Adelaide Plains Under 12 boys journeyed to Adelaide to compete in the South Australian Country Basketball Championships on 24 and 25 March. Although the lads only came away with one win, all players showed immense improvement as a team throughout the weekend. The first game was against Keith, and our boys started slowly. As the game progressed, the boys picked up on the pace and with Ethan Brownlie providing strong rebounds, points soon moved onto the scoreboard. CooperAllen showed great defensive skills, along with Isaac Pepe. Final score: Adelaide Plains 18 to Keith 38 The second game against Millicent was fast and tough, and although the boys were outplayed at times, they had no trouble moving the ball forward into the circle. Sabian Bennett provided strong defence and rebounding, but was soon in foul trouble. With Karl Binka rebounding and intercepting many balls, the Plains boys showed improvement as the game progressed. Bradley Brown defended well and made great position in the forward court. Adelaide Plains 11 lost to Millicent 52
After an afternoon break including ten pin bowling, the boys were hungry for a win, and Mt Gambier were in their sights. Jack Heaslip exploded out of the blocks and with his great court coverage and strong ball control, gave the Plains boys the early advantage.Aiden Viney came into the game, helping put the Plains in a winning position. With Thomas Michael driving and shooting strongly, the boys claimed their first and only victory for the weekend. Adelaide Plains 24 defeated Mt Gambier 22 Sunday morning’s final at the Dome brought both excitement and disappointment as our boys were outplayed by a tall, strong Keith side (who went on to win the grand final). Although the boys moved the ball into the forward court, their shots wouldn’t drop and the opposition rebounded most balls. Adelaide Plains 2 lost to Keith 57 A great weekend was had by players and parents, and the boys conducted themselves brilliantly and never gave up. Well done. Thank you to all parents who helped score, time and keep stats. – Coach Andrew Michael
NINE young Adelaide Plains girls headed to Adelaide in March, to play in the SouthAustralian Country Basketball Championships. Coming home short of a premiership by one point in an overtime thriller, each of the girls proved their determination and aggression on court against Eastern Hills. In the first game against Keith, the girls locked away a secure 34 point win, with Chelsea Selwood running her opponents down with her fast legs, and Kate Heaslip communicating well on and off court. The enthusiasm and energy remained consistent. In particular, the aggression and passion for the game was shown brilliantly by Tamika Gregory, . The second game saw the girls front up against Mt Gambier, proving to be a difficult match, the girls only coming away with a 10 point lead. Adelaide Plains struggled to match the physicality and tempo of the other team, as they had not yet adapted to strict district umpiring. Kara Binka and Rhea Lawless were the first two to adapt, even if it did take one of them an unsportsman-like foul. The team learned quickly how to harness and control frustration to manipulate it into determination, which won them the game 22 -12. For the final game of the first day, the Adelaide Plains girls were slowly losing their enthusiasm. In a game which was thought to be a tough game against Broken Hill, the girls came away with an easy 20 point win. Teisha Harkness was the power house of the team, sinking over half the side’s
points, with a total of 14. Her development over the weekend was outstanding, as she lifted the team’s tempo with her powerful drives to the basket. Emma Lane also impressed against Broken Hill, with her strong defence. The second day was played at the Adelaide 36ers Dome with knockout finals played. Lucy Dixon was the standout player, with her tight defence causing many turnovers. Her development also improved in leaps and bounds, as did Catelyn Harkeness as in the morning game against Whyalla – Catelyn put in a huge seven points for the team, leading the Plains girls to yet another victory, 26-18. The semi-final against the Riverland was won 24-9, with the girls showing consistency and development. After a long recovery session before the grand final, the girls seemed to be in top shape with profound energy.
After a long hard three quarters, the Plains girls were down by 12 with all hope of the gold medal being lost. After an awakening team huddle at quarter time, Teisha Harkness and Catelyn Harkness found strength to grab strong boards and fast breaks, sealing a draw to enter a gruelling three minute overtime. Losing by just one point in the last few seconds, each of the girls showed great improvement and should be proud of themselves to have been fine representatives of their association. In years to come, they could even be representing their state or country! Thank you to all parents and supporters for your commitment, and to team manager, Nicole Gregory. Some true potential is spread throughout the Adelaide plains – focus and practise will ensure premierships in the future! – Coach Brianna Wedding

Northern Light Women celebrate end of a bowling era The NLWBA has had a busy March, with singles, pairs, triples and fours championships, final games of the round for the premiership and a fun celebration day for the association. Due to the formation of a new association for bowling clubs in Region 8, the Northern Light Women’s Bowling Association has held the last of its championships, and premiership pennants games under this current name. The NLWBA will be known as the Mid North Ladies Section, within the new Broughton, Mid North, Wooroora BowlingAssociation, and to celebrate the change in the association, a fun day was held at the Saddleworth greens on Thursday March 29, with 55 ladies attending, and playing a couple of out-of-the-ordinary games, and sharing a pooled lunch. Players were encouraged to come in either very colourful clothes or their older uniforms. Association secretary, Bev Schoenberg gave a short history for those present, noting the NLWBA started in 1955-56. Connie Haydon from Saddleworth club, reported that you needed permission from your skipper to take your hat off when you came in for afternoon tea. We have seen some big changes over the years in the dress codes and rules for the ladies for the association. Some clubs have joined the association during the years, and some

clubs have moved to other associations but it was lovely to have had good representation from the Eudunda girls, who now play in the Barossa association. Prizes were given for the most colourful dress of the day and the most authentic, and Lorna Sutton from Burra won the most colourful and Dallis Marder from Eudunda the most authentic, with the most badges and bars. President Rosie Richardson would like to thank all those who attended, it was a great success and many stories

were shared with those ladies present, and everyone had a great time. The friendships that have been made through NLWBA will continue, and grow, in the Mid North Ladies Section. A bit of history The association was formed in 1955 and consisted of clubs from Eudunda, Freeling, Kapunda, Marrabel, Riverton, Saddleworth, and Tarlee. Matches were played in the afternoon and there was a charge of 1/- for afternoon tea, and affiliation fees were
10/- per club. Because of its central location, association meetings were held at Marrabel at a cost of 5/-. The length of bowls uniform dresses had to be 3” below the knee, and Saddleworth Club recommended that frocks not be more than 15” from the ground and sleeves no more than 2” above the elbows. Registration fees were 1/- per player and members were to pay 1/- to enter championships. Freeling Club transferred to Barossa & Light Association in 1963, and Marrabel Club went into recess in 1970, Robertstown were accepted into the association in the same year. There were 1st and 2nd Divisions with eight players per side and the cost of a biscuit afternoon tea had risen to 3/-. Dress length was now to be 2” below the crease at the back of the knee! (presumably no male umpires for women’s games in that era?). In 1973 Watervale joined the association, which now played 12 in 1st Division and eight players in 2nd Division. In 1978 there were 211 registered players in the association. Kapunda transferred to B & L: Association in 1980 and Divisions were dropped, and in 1981 Robertstown hosted the Silver Jubilee of NLWBA in the Town Hall with 88 players attending at a cost of $5.50 each. In 1982 there were 13 Pennant sides of 12 players, and in 1985 the rule of wearing stockings was defeated
and sockettes were approved. Hats had to worn at all times and ladies were requested to wear white frocks while serving food at tournaments. To alleviate heat stress, starting times for games was altered to 10.30am in 1986, (or was it so that they could be home in time to cook their husbands’ tea?) In1991 it was approved to wear divided skirts if made to a pattern supplied, and lined or worn with split slip and camisole top. Plain gold or silver single strand necklaces were also allowed to be worn. Mintaro were admitted to the association in 1996 with registrations now $2 per member and the secretary’s allowance $140. It was also decided to revert to eight players per side with 17 sides in the competition. During this era coloured tops and pants were approved and red cardigans allowed, and in 2001 shorts were now permitted. In 2005 Burra, Booborowie, Hallett, and Spalding were admitted when their association altered, and Eudunda transferred to Barossa & Light. The minutes reveal that a regular debate was whether finals were played, and conditions of the hot weather policy. The association closes with 15 sides, and 139 registered players and all clubs will become Mid North Ladies Section, part of the newly formed Broughton, Mid North, & Wooroora (BMW) Bowling Association. www.plainsproducer.com.au

2012 Road Safety Ambassador United Football Club Ambassador: Richard Taylor
1. Why did you get involved with the Road Safety Ambassador role at your club? I got involved to make the younger ones aware of the risks of drink driving and get them to look out for one another. Younger people today seem more aware of the risks of drink driving than we did years ago. 2. What have you done so far in your role as Road Safety Ambassador? We have held information sessions after training, to reinforce the dangers of drink driving. We have tried to get across that a bad choice in a spilt second can lead to disaster. We are lucky that we have not had a death in the club, but we have seen other clubs which have, and not only does it impact on their families, but also the whole community. 3. What impact do you think the campaign has had on the club and community? If we can get across that drink driving is not alright and at least get through to one person, hopefully this will continue to rub off on other people. So if someone is about to drive under the influence, there will be someone there to step in.

Living life at Inkerman wasn’t all bad… Heritage Highlights
The name Inkerman comes from the Battle of Inkerman, one of several well-known battles in the Crimean War – it was fought on November 5, 1854. Sir James Fergusson, who later became a Governor of South Australia, is reported to have been wounded in the wrist in that battle, during an encounter with Russian troops, while trying to defend the Grenadier Guards’ sandbag battery. The Hundred of Inkerman, in the County of Gawler, was proclaimed on May 22, 1856 by SA Governor MacDonnell. The Inkerman we know today is situated on Highway One, south of Port Wakefield. The nearest port on Gulf St Vincent was Port Lorne, which thrived because of the coastal shipping trade, when other transport routes were virtually nonexistent in the area.
by Norma Schopp
Schooling was important and records show a school operated from as early as 1879 (known as Inkerman or South Inkerman) – built partly by the local residents and partly paid for by the government. Despite a couple of closures, the school functioned for most of the time from 1879 until 1906. (Interestingly, in 1884 the Bowmans school was known as North Inkerman). After its closure, the Inkerman school building was used for dances and socials. The Post Office was opened in January 1881, on the corner of Pt Lorne road and Wallaroo track (now Highway One), with post-

He also wrote: “Living at Inkerman is not all bad! Through the summer we usually get a breeze off the sea in the afternoon, making it a pleasant place to live. The rainfall is a little on the low side, but it is excellent early feed country, making it good for fat lamb production. The country does not need heavy applications of fertiliser and is light to work, making it cheaper to manage than heavier soils.” Today, there are still some larger farm holdings in the Inkerman area, as well as quite a few smaller hobby farms. With the upgrade of Highway One, commuting to the city and suburbs for work is made much easier and, as the traffic goes speeding by, how many really notice that Inkerman does still exist, albeit in slightly different form and character to that of yesteryear?

master Michael Burt. In 1890 it became the Inkerman South Post Office, combined with a general store which also held a wine licence. The Post Office closed in 1915, but the store kept going for a while longer. Port Lorne lost its importance when the railway came. John Prime prepared an article for a local history book in 1985, writing: “At Port Lorne the water is no longer accessible to the public, being part of the Army Proof and Experimental Establishment. The buildings are in ruins. The Inkerman school disappeared during the Second World War, and the Post Office is waist-high ruins. The Church alone remains, a tribute to “the Glory of God” as the foundation stone reads, and a memorial to the pioneers whose faith and spirit led them to establish this place of worship.”

their various suped-up Commodores. The song features a heavy bassline, as standard, ramped up with a chorus of synthesizers and poor, poor lyrics. Examples of which include “tonight I’m thirsty and I’m drinking like a grizzly bear, ‘coz I’m on fire like a chilli super that you can stare.” Deep. Insightful stuff. All the while, Fat Man Scoop is doing his trademark yelling of his own name, plus other artists involved in the song, with a few “whoops” thrown in there for flavour. It’s a lame song but sure to hit the top 10 in the charts. Who am I kidding, after a few beers I’ll be rocking the boat on the D-floor as well. Sometimes I hate myself. Tune in next time, ‘coz I’m Mr Brightside.

Local influence urged for Hamley plan “THE process of developing a concept for a preferred future for any urban place must be initiated and guided by those who know the place best - the people who live there.” Those words from University of Adelaide School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design senior lecturer, Dr Susan Shannon, reflect the processes at last Tuesday’s consultation session at Hamley Bridge. Wakefield Regional Council is utilising the university’s services to develop some form of urban concept design in anticipation of prospective residential growth at the town. Dr Shannon, fellow course director, Rick Atkinson, and a group of 15 masters students from the Principles of Urban Design course in the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design were present at the session at the town hall. Dr Shannon said the group are focused on finding out from the citizens of Hamley Bridge and nearby areas, what it is that they value most about the town and what they believe would make their town an even better place to live in. There have been two meetings with residents so far, the second involving all the student group, and the

These included environment, buildings and heritage, water issues, transport, infrastructure and community, which will now be collated and organised to inform the first stage of a concept plan for Hamley Bridge’s future development. “Those broad headings were distilled from the feedback at the first

DEFENCE PROOF & EXPERIMENTAL ESTABLISHMENT PORT WAKEFIELD: LIVE FIRING RANGE WARNING NOTICE
3 Drinks 3 Ice Cream 3 Cooked BBQ 3 Trains running from 12.30pm to 4.30pm
Birthday party & Special Events are welcome, contact Bob 8264 0449 anytime
Test and evaluation activities involving static firings and/or firings of naval and artillery weapons are conducted at the Proof and Experimental Establishment Port Wakefield throughout the year. The Proof and Experimental Establishment Port Wakefield is a vital Defence test and evaluation capability that has supported Defence since 1929. These firings may require specific tidal or weather conditions, and are critical for the safety of current and new Defence capabilities. Members of the public may notice noise, vibration, flashes and/or smoke during the testing. There is no risk to the public outside of the gazetted Defence Practice Areas. For reasons of public safety, there is a permanent exclusion zone covering land, sea and air around the Port Wakefield Establishment. Specific details on the Port Wakefield Prohibited Area can be obtained from Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No GN 26, 4 July 1990, and is shown on the diagram below. Trespassing in this Area is strictly prohibited and very dangerous due to the presence of unexploded bombs. Any person found within the Prohibited Area or on Defence land will be subject to prosecution. Val’s earned her stripes Not only will this Saturday kick off the 2012 local football season, but United Football Club will also pay tribute to Val Daniel, former canteen veteran. Val, who served the Tigers for almost 40 years, began in 1964 when Long Plains and Dublin joined forces to become United Football Club. In 1989, after 25 years working in the

canteen, Val was made canteen manager. Mike Sharman, who has also been involved in the United Club for a number of years, believes even after her retirement in 2002, her standards are still being met in the canteen today. “She set many standards years ago, and until today we still thrive on them. “She always made sure there was hot food
available right up until 4pm, and our club was well known for never running out of food,” Mike said. An afternoon tea will be held on Saturday at the United Football Club, after the B grade match against Mallala. “We chose this week to celebrate with Val as we always have a great game and great crowd playing Mallala,” Mike said. “Everyone is welcome to come and help celebrate with Val and enjoy afternoon tea.”

PORT Wakefield bowler, Will McPharlin, has made it a season to remember, taking out the title of Club Champion, Wooroora Men’s Bowling Association Singles Champion and Region 8 Singles Champion. Will was named Port Wakefield Club Champion in February, after playing against three fellow club members...eventually defeating father, Greg, in the final by just one shot! This was an especially memorable event for Will, as it was the first time he’d won the title. “I was pretty happy to win (the Singles title),” he said. “Dad and I also won the Club Pairs together...it’s the fourth time we’ve won.” Will defeated Peter Thompson in the both the WMBA Championship Singles (held at Riverton in late February), and also in the Region 8 Championships Singles (held at Balaklava on April 1). In an uncanny result, both scores were 25-9! Will was thrilled to win all three Singles titles, “I was pretty excited!” he beamed. n Read John Glistak’s WMBA Championships report, along with Region 8 Championship results and pictures, page 24
