Gilmac raises the roof on new shed

n THIS was the scene from the air south of Balaklava on Tuesday at Gilmac’s hay facility when 10 cranes moved in to lift the roof. The spectacle was visible from the township with the cranes dominating the skyline.

Les Pearson reports:

TEN cranes were needed to hoist two huge storage sheds into place at Gilmac’s Balaklava site on the Adelaide road this week. The sheds are part of a huge expansion at the site, vastly increasing storage space from 25,000 to 40,000 tonnes in anticipation of a second press being installed on-site. The construction technique, employed in this instance by Swan Hill Engineering, is fairly new to South Australia, according to Gilmac site manager, Mark Heaslip. n Continued Page 2

Councillor stands down ‘Third party’ prompts Ombudsman investigation WAKEFIELD Regional Council Northern ward elected member, John Wood, has temporarily stood down from all council duties pending the outcome of a preliminary investigation by the State Ombudsman. Cr Wood announced he sought a leave of absence in a short speech during the early stages of last week’s council meeting. During his speech, he declared he would strongly refute and defend any accusations against him. He then left his seat at the table

Les Pearson reports: and sat in the public gallery for the remainder of the meeting. Cr Wood declined to comment further on the situation. WRC chief executive officer, Cate Atkinson, said the Ombudsman was in the process of determining if Cr Wood had a case to answer. “The ombudsman has determined to initiate his own investigation,

which is a preliminary inquiry into what happened,” Mrs Atkinson said. “It’s not a formal investigation as such. “The ombudsman will generally initiate his own inquiry to determine if there is a case or not. “(He) has received a request for an investigation from a third party and that’s what he is acting on.” Mrs Atkinson said Cr Wood’s leave of absence was not a compulsory action. “He is not required to do that but

it is something he has chosen to do,” she said. “We respect his approach if that’s what he wants to do.” It is the second time in 12 months a WRC councillor has appeared under the ombudsman’s microscope, having recently investigated Western ward councillor, Daryl Pain, which has progressed to the District Court. “That matter is still before the court,” Mrs Atkinson said. “My understanding is the matter has been listed for hearing in Councillor John Wood December.”

Tod and Jacqui Gant looking pleased with their award-winning pies.

Go to Wakey for ... a pie! Who ate all the pies? Judges at 2012 Official Great Aussie Pie Competition! And some of the delicious pies they tasted, were made by Port Wakefield’s Tod and Jacqui Gant, owners of Kiplings Bakery. The pie market is worth $1 billion annually in Australia, and the competition gives pie makers a chance to promote their goods and shine on the national stage. Tod and Jacqui took over the bakery business last year, and decided to “have a go” and enter some of their pies in the national competition. “It was our first time in the competition and we really didn’t know what the judges were looking for,” said Jacqui. There were two sections, regular meat pie or gourmet pies, with seven different types of gourmet pie section – game,

Louise Michael reports: poultry, seafood, vegetarian, red meat, gluten free and apple. The pair entered one “regular” meat pie, and two gourmet pies, chicken satay and the new bolognaise pie, which has only been a recent addition to their menu. “We had to pick the four best pies from the normal bakery run and currently on the menu, and take them to Melbourne. The judges then picked the best two.” “One was left cold, cut up and judged on texture, pastry and appearance, the other one was heated up for tasting by the judges,” said Jacqui. After judging on day one, Tod and Jacqui were rewarded for their creative cooking efforts, winning silver for their

chicken satay pie, and bronze for bolognaise pie. There were more than 1500 entries from bakeries around Australia in the competition, held in conjunction with Fine Foods Australia, which was held in Melbourne’s Exhibition and Convention Centre from September 10-14. Tod, the master of pastry, soup and sauces, bakes on-site, has been a baker for eight years, after being a chef for almost 20 years previously. He tries to use locally sourced organic produce where possible. There’s a large range of delicious foods at the bakery, with new menu choices popping up regularly. Next time you’re in Wakey, drop in and be your own judge of these delicious award winning pies.

Gilmac raises the roof and more on new sheds •From page 1 The rooves were first built on the ground. The wall columns were bolted on the bottom of the roof, which the cranes then lifted up, the columns sliding into place underneath the roof and dropping down on top of the bolts jutting out from the footings.

2 www.plainsproducer.com.au

The columns were then bolted to the footings. The iron for the shed walls will be added in coming weeks, along with asphalt floors. As for size, these structures are huge. Each storage shed measures 160 metres long, 45 metres wide and 8.7 metres high. To put that into perspective, each shed is about the length of the MCG’s playing

surface from boundary line to boundary line. For a biblical reference, some scholars speculate Noah’s Ark was about 135 metres long. At 8.7 metres, they are about three metres taller than an average male giraffe. In total, 500 tonnes of steel was delivered to the site for the sheds’ construction.

Development wrangles bring WRC to court WAKEFIELD Regional Council is involved in two separate local development matters currently before the Environment, Resources and Development Court (ERD Court). The first is regarding a car restoration business looking to operate from an address in the light industrial zone on Railway terrace, Balaklava. WRC chief executive officer, Cate Atkinson, said there was an objection to the application. “There’s ongoing negotiation occurring in relation to the application,” she said. “The objector has raised concern about the definition of the activity and the fact the amount of information submitted with the application made it difficult to determine what sort of impact it would have on the adjoining property.” The development application for the expansion at South Ozzy Meats, on East terrace, is also held up in legal proceedings. “Council is still awaiting further information from the applicant in relation to the abattoir and more information needs to be lodged with the EPA,” Mrs Atkinson said. “When that information is received, then the matter will be able to proceed.” The information in question would assist the EPA’s considerations in providing the business with an abattoir’s licence. “All abattoirs are licensed with a range of conditions attached to each licence, which are quite site specific,” Mrs Atkinson explained. “So, we’re waiting for information to address any concerns, issues or requirements the EPA has, in order to be able to issue a licence.”

Petitions on town signs TWO petitions were received from the Port Wakefield community regarding signage in the Port Wakefield Signage Strategy. The first, which attracted about 207 signatures and was submitted in the August council agenda, revolves around the large sign previously placed in front of the Port Wakefield Bakery. The bakery owners also voiced their concerns regarding the sign detracting from their business at that meeting. An attached note from Western Ward councillor, Richard Pain, calls for the original signage at the site to be returned. The second petition, also submitted by Cr Pain, received 76 signatures and also calls the sign in front of the bakery be removed and relocated to the town entry on the Balaklava road near the 80km/h sign. Both petitions were noted and considered part of the outcomes of the current public consultation process regarding the signage strategy.

Resident in formal apology to councillors BALAKLAVA resident Roger McQuire presented a formal apology to Western ward councillors, Richard and Darryl Pain, at last week’s Wakefield Regional Council meeting. The apology followed an incident in February last year, when Mr McQuire, speaking on behalf of Balco at the time as part of a deputation to council, allegedly accused Cr Daryl

Pain and Richard Pain (he was not a councillor at the time) of trespassing on Balco property. “I…apologise to Cr Daryl Pain and his father, Richard Pain, for any embarrassment, hurt or distress caused to them as a result of improper comments made by me, about them, during my presentation,” Mr McQuire said in a short statement to council..

Marine Park group catches attention with boating graveyard holiday stunt REPORT: Les Pearson PICTURES: Lisa Redpath MARINE Park 14 Action Group’s (MPAG) boat graveyard publicity stunt over the long weekend was a success, according to MPAG chairman, Bart Butson. About 20 boats were involved in the marine cemetery, with fake tombstones and other grim props used to illustrate how worthless the community’s boats would become if proposed State government sanctuary zones are applied as currently planned. “We got really good exposure and lots of toots, encouragement and support from passing travellers,” Mr Butson said. The stunt was planned to coincide with the large volume of traffic making its way through the town and raise awareness of the community’s plight. “It wasn’t our intent to have a lot of people pull over but more so to just get some publicity and wider support from other areas,” Mr Butson said. “We also had great media coverage from the Plains Producer and Channel Seven News. “It achieved the aims of the exercise, so I’m very satisfied with it.”

ENCOURAGING passing travellers to support their cause are (from left) Norm Goller, Kyla Griffin, Pat Cicolella and Marg White. LEFT: Balaklava-based fishermen Jeff Sutton (left) and Ray Billing, who have been at the forefront of opposition to some areas of park zoning. About 200 people threw their support behind the community position promoted by the MPAG. Action group members were on hand in the town’s roadhouses and fuel outlets to provide travellers with further information on the issue as well. It was originally planned to be a one-day event but organisers decided to come back on Monday and get the message out to the

country health issue:

Minister rejects nurse claims Labor had created 700 more full-time equivalent nursing positions in South Australia’s country hospitals compared to a decade ago, according to Minister for Health and Ageing, John Hill. Mr Hill rejected suggestions of a nursing shortage in country hospitals. “The Liberals’ claims about nurse staffing of our country hospitals is scare-mongering,” Mr Hill said. “The number of nurses staffing country hospitals is based on a descriptive formula that has been agreed with the nurses union and is outlined in an Enterprise Agreement.” However, The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (SA Branch) also is calling for community support as a result of continuing concerns country health care was being compromised by poor staffing and skills mix issues.

The Federation released an on-line and hard-copy petition and is asking the community to support nurses and midwives to provide positive patient care now and into the future by signing and circulating that petition – available at www.anmfsa.org.au “Naracoorte nurses and midwives held a rally on Tuesday September 25 because of their distress at a failure by County Health SA (CHSA) to address concerns they have been raising for more than 12 months,” said adj assoc professor Elizabeth Dabars, CEO/ Secretary of the ANMF (SA Branch). Berri nurses and midwives also met last week over care needs. Mr Hill said Country Health SA was “in positive discussions” with the union about the next Enterprise Agreement and how the staffing formula might look in the future.

Carnival brings Auburn alive

AUBURN came alive to the sound of music and more as about 100 performers dazzled big crowds at the Courthouse Carnival last weekend. Local artists joined others from around the State and nationally at Auburn Courthouse for a program of jazz, blues, classical, folk, and more. The weekend was organised by HATs Inc (Heritage, Arts & Traditions), a not-for-profit group run entirely by volunteers. Students from Riverton and District High School presented a stunning special theatre performance of ‘Trapped’. The Carnival featured the ‘Happiness in Auburn’ felt flags project and Scarecrows made by Auburn Primary School students. Crowds enjoyed Clare Valley wines, plus delicious meals and snacks.

We’ve had the usual September spring weather – beautiful one day, windy, hot and dusty the next. With weather warming up, thoughts of the predicted extra-hot summer we are meant to have, crop up in our minds. As do crops! How are we going to keep cool? Extortionate power bills to run air-conditioning. Rising water costs making it expensive for people with their own back-yard swimming pools. After low rainfall, there’s not much fresh water in the river to have a swim, although the leeches don’t mind! Thoughts turn to having a swim in our local town pools. No pool cleaning and chlorine testing, just rock up and get in the pool. Now, what happens when it’s stinking hot and you go to the pool and it isn’t open, purely because there’s no-one around qualified to be on duty as a lifeguard? The lifeguard issue has cropped up again, and the bottom line is, if there is no-one available, the pool won’t be open. Towns of Owen, Balaklava and Hamley Bridge are seeking your help with the running of their town pools. To become a lifeguard, you must have a current Bronze Medallion and Senior First Aid certificate, or be willing to complete them. Lifeguard certificates are re-

newed annually, as they include a CPR component. If you’d like to become a Lifeguard, please contact Roweena Tiller on 0488 224 854. Balaklava

obert Edward Furniss Dennison, known as Eddie or Ed to family and friends, was born in Balaklava on July 20, 1916. His early years were spent with his parents, and older sister Hazel, on the family farm “Inverness” at Hoyleton. Ed’s father suffered a serious accident when he was a young man and farming was difficult, so the family moved to a small property near Balaklava, now known as Wattle Ridge. Sadly Ed’s mother passed away when he was just nine years of age, and after this, Ed and his family went to live with his father’s sisters in Fisher Street. Ed attended Balaklava primary and high schools. When Ed was 11, his father bought a property on the river at Upper Wakefield, and after leaving school, Ed and his father divided their time between the new farm, also named “Inverness” and Fisher Street. Ed met Olivia Uppill, they married in 1938 and lived in a house along the Riverton road. They had four daughters, Rosemary, Judith, Valerie and Christobel. Ed loved motorbikes and bought a second hand one when

He started playing cricket for Halbury at 30 years of age, and when he retired at 38, took up golf, which he continued to play for the next 54 years. He loved golf and at one time, had a handicap of just one. He played in many championships both in SA and interstate. In 1967, Ed and Olivia sold the farm to Gerald and Patricia Uppill, and moved to Stirling, but they eventually moved back to Balaklava in 1990. Ed was a member

of both Stirling and Balaklava Golf Clubs, and during his time at both clubs, made over 1300 golf putters, which were greatly prized by their owners, with some even making their way overseas. The Eddie Dennison putting trophy is still awarded at Balaklava Golf Club each year for the lowest putting scores over three rounds during the club championships. Sadly, Olivia passed away eight years ago, and after coping on his own for several years after her death, Ed eventually moved into Mill Court. Ed passed away Sunday, September 23, aged 96.

who Shane described as regular, everyday blokes, sharing testimonies and experiences throughout the weekend. He believed the fact there were no high profile or keynote presenters at the conference was one of its main strengths. “That’s the main difference about this, as every man has a story to tell,” Shane said. “It certainly makes it a lot easier for other fellas to identify with that. “People who are coming aren’t drawn by a big name, more so the down to earth nature of it.” The event draws people from all over the nation, with registrants making their way from Tasmania, Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. While the campers provide

their own breakfast, a local group of caterers will provide lunch and dinner to the huge group during the conference. The caterers, again led by Julie McPharlin, are just one part of a group of about 40 people involved in running the event this year. “This year we have definitely broadened our team putting it on,” Shane said. “It certainly makes it a lighter load on everyone giving their time and effort.” With the weather forecast looking amazing, all is set for another big weekend. “It is a great opportunity to connect with other fellas in an open, relaxed atmosphere and to see how God is leading us as men and also see how men connect to God,” Shane said.

Scam victim warns of credit card ‘refund’ ruse

A BALAKLAVA resident reported being the victim of a scam last week. The resident said the caller claimed to be from a “reclaim office” in Sydney, telling victims they have been wrongly charged withdrawal fees each time they have used their bank cards. The caller then directed the victim to transfer money via Western Union at a post office (about $200 or so) to claim their “wrongly” charged withdrawal fees. The caller has a strong foreign accent and the phone line is slightly hazy, indicating an international origin.

The ACCC SCAMwatch website has a warning running for this particular scam. “If you receive a call or email claiming you’re entitled to reclaim overpaid tax or bank fees, ignore it – these scams are doing the rounds,” the site warns. “The scammer will typically pretend to be from a government agency, bank or private law firm claiming you are entitled to reclaim your overpaid tax or bank fees. “They may also tell you that the refund is taxable and you will have to pay the tax amount before receiving the refund, or that you have to pay a fee to receive your

money. “Watch out: the scammer is after your personal information and often your money. “They may ask you to confirm your personal details, or claim you need to pay an upfront payment to receive the refund. “The scammer will claim to be from the Australian Taxation Office or a fictitious government agency and state that you need to pay a fee or tax in advance to claim the refund. “Australian Government departments will never contact you via phone or email to ask you to pay tax or upfront amounts in order to claim a refund.” n Go to scamwatch.gov.au

A GATHERING of more than 200 Christian men from all over Australia will be making the pilgrimage to Halbury this weekend for the Living Water Men’s Conference. It will be the second time the faith-building event has been held locally, following on from the success of last year’s inaugural conference. Event co-ordinator, Shane Dodd, said the conference would again be about getting back to the roots of their faith. “It will be very similar to last year in its format, with the main difference being the speakers we have,” he said. The men will be camping at the town’s oval from Friday until Sunday, with the various speakers,

Research proves we connect with readers Insights into how Australians engage with regional newspapers is revealed in the 2012 Local Newspapers Report. The repor is supported by The Newspaper Works, an industry body established to prove newspapers are an effective and influential advertising medium. Research found Australians have a clear understanding of the unique roles the three tiers of newspaper publishing (national/ metro, regional and community) play in their lives and how they meet different needs. While national and large metro newspapers provide their readers with a world view and are seen as the authority on the big picture issues, regional newspaper readers say their newspaper plays the role of a trusted advocate, with its finger on the pulse of local concerns. The research revealed Australians see regional newspapers as driving the regional agenda and

Plains Producer protecting readers’ interests. Readers also consider regional newspapers follow important stories that would not receive coverage elsewhere, and are seen as more reliable, honest and unbiased than any other local media. The research demonstrated regional newspapers are perceived to take a stand and protect the interests of readers on community issues. Key findings include: 4 Readers engage more deeply with regional newspapers compared with TV and radio 4 Twice as likely to have enquired about a product or service because of a newspaper ad than one played on local radio. 4 Nearly twice as likely to have visited a store or business because of a newspaper ad versus local TV. 4 Regional newspapers pro-

vide superior coverage of important local news, issues and practical local information: 4 Twice as likely to stand up for important issues in their local area . 4 Readers are more likely to act on, keep or share content in regional newspapers compared to TV, radio or letterbox catalogues/ flyers: 4 Three times more likely to keep details of a newspaper ad than they are from letterbox flyers and catalogues (46 per cent compared with 14 per cent for letterbox flyers/catalogues). 4 Nearly three times as likely to share something with family and friends than if they heard it on local radio or seen on local TV (48 per cent compared with 14per cent for local radio and15 per cent for local TV). 4 The majority of readers are more positive towards regional newspaper advertisers and responsive to advertiser messages.

NEWS v Balaklava

Family day sure to be a hit! YOU can ride your bike, push the pram, walk or run to a great family fun day coming up at Balaklava Golf Club. But there’s more to the day than an amble through the countryside. It has an Olympic theme. Read on! The day, a combined fundraiser for the golf club and the Shamus Liptrot Cycling trail, will be held during the afternoon and evening of Saturday, November 3. It will start with a combined cycle ride and walk along the Balaklava Lions trail to the Shamus Liptrot cycling trail, ending with a great afternoon of family entertainment at Balaklava Golf Club. Participants will gather in the park area opposite Balaklava Hospital at 3pm to follow the trails to the club. But make sure you take some gold coins along, as several “toll gates” will be in place, where a gold coin donation will allow you to continue on your way. The “toll” will be worthwhile, as you will be able to ride/walk alongside several Olympic medallists and world champions! London Olympic silver medallist and three-time world cycling champion, Jack Bobridge, is expected to ride, along with fellow Silver medallist and world champion, Michael Hepburn and Bronze medal winner Annette Edmondson, who was a close friend of Shamus Liptrot. Annette (or Nettie) is helping organise the big day and she is hoping more Olympians – “maybe even some Paralympians” – will make

It is expected some of the Olympians will also relate their stories at a function at the golf club – and you will likely get the chance to touch an Olympic medal! Balaklava Area Committee (BAC) and Wakefield Regional Council’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) are supporting the golf club and cycling trail committee, who are organising the day. “We see this as a great community event for all of Balaklava and surrounding areas,” said Balaklava Area Committee deputy chairman and cycling trail committee member, Terry Williams. “It’s a fundraiser for two great local groups – but it also aims to bring people together in the wonderful environment of the golf club

Our cycle team sets sizzling pedal pace BALAKLAVA based team, Sutton Cycles, finished an outstanding eighth overall in the recent Australian HPV Series 24-hour Pedal Prix at Murray Bridge. The Sutton Cycles entry, Super Team Bluebird Bros, completed 438 laps of the 2.15km circuit at Sturt Reserve, totalling 941.7km travelled at an average speed of nearly 40km/h over the 24-hour period. That includes rider changes, crashes and down time due to four flat tyres throughout the race.

Local lads, Luke and Jason Sutton, have been competing in the event for about 10 years, since entering while at high school. Each year, they build a different threewheeled bike, tweaking various features for more speed and efficiency. They also built bikes for Concordia Old Collegians Association (21st overall) and Balaklava High School, which had two teams involved this year, placing at 164 and 182. While eighth was the Suttons best finish ever, the team also picked up the Bill Standing

Kaidy’s cash supports Red Cross cause

TWO WELLS & DISTRICTS NEWS

Raising just over $9200 in 12 months is no mean feat, yet little Kaidy Pirri and her family have done just that for the Australian Red Cross. Nineteen-month-old Kaidy is the daughter of Two Wells residents, Candace and Matthew Pirri, and has been named Category 4 winner in the annual South Australian Red Cross Baby Competition, for her efforts. Category 4 of the competition includes country towns with a population of between 2001 and 3000. In total, the Pirri family raised an impressive $9212.50, and did so by holding raffles at the Two Wells Bowls Club each week and staging a huge garage sale, where many people kindly donated their unwanted goods. Kaidy’s mum, Candace, wishes to thank everyone who helped out or donated to the cause.

Ella all set to shine

In other Red Cross news, little Ella Shipton has been chosen as the next “face” of the Two Wells Red Cross for the 2012/2013 year. One-year-old Ella is the daughter of Amy Duncan and Michael Shipton, and is the granddaughter of Two Wells locals, Pam and Barry Duncan. The family is planning to raise funds for the Red Cross through raffles, one or two sausage sizzles and possibly a thrifty fashion parade.

The Sutton Cycles team included 10 riders and 10 support workers. A few rollovers also meant the Super Team Bluebird Bros bike was a virtual write-off. “It’s not a pretty looking thing now,” Jason said. The team tries to train for the event all year round but often work and other obligations get in the way. The riders managed about 10 training sessions before the race. Jason believed if they could train more in the lead up to the event, they have the bike design almost perfected and better results could come.

Abuse means bins go Excessive rubbish, vandalism and continued misuse of the St Vincent De Paul charity bins in Two Wells, has forced the well-known organisation to take steps to remove them. The bins, located at the front of the Catholic Church, will be removed on October 16. Charitable clothing items can still be put in the bins until this date. SERVICING LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Always delivering the goods G arry “Gumby” and Jenni Hosking, owners of Balaklava Transport, have come a long way in 10 years. Starting with two trucks in 2002, they now have five trucks, a van, and nine staff. Gumby and Jenni were originally pig farmers at Blyth, and then moved to Kimba to run another piggery. They later moved back to Halbury to continue pig farming. To supplement their income, Jenni did the book work, and Gumby drove a truck for former Balaklava Transport owners, Graham and Yvonne Patterson. In 2002, Hoskings purchased the business, and continued working together, but this time as the owners. The business grew steadily, but in 2008, after acquiring Adelaide Plains Transport business, it rapidly expanded. Within a short time, the Hoskings started their own overnight parcel pick-up delivery to and

from Adelaide Plains and Adelaide. Shortly after, an opportunity arose to take over the Southern Flinders Ranges run, which included areas of Quorn, Melrose, Wilmington and Booleroo Centre. “In 2011, we took on a general freight run to Hawker and Wilpena Pound, carting everything from beer, wool, groceries and building supplies,” said Jenni. They travel at least once a week to the Flinders Ranges area and Rawnsley Park, carting everything for the shop and motel at Wilpena Pound resort, from white goods and mattresses, to souvenirs. “Basically, we can cart anything,” she said. Recently, there has been an addition to the Balaklava Transport fleet, the “pitter patter” of a small delivery van. This is used daily for smaller pick-ups to and from Adelaide metro area and delivering to and from the Adelaide Plains area, including Gawler, Balaklava, Dublin and anywhere in between.

“Look after you feet, you only get one pair” is advice from AC Podiatry owner, Abbe Morris (pictured). Abbe took over established podiatry businesses in Clare and Riverton in May this year. Abbe has been a podiatrist for almost four years and has had a variety of experience in both metropolitan and rural settings. She has worked with Country Health SA based at Whyalla Hospital but flying with RFDS to various outreach centres including Ceduna and Streaky Bay. AC Podiatry provides a large range of foot care, including assessment and treatment for sports injuries, heel and arch pain, ingrown toenails, plantar warts, corns and callouses, tinea, and foot infections. Abbe also treats occupational injury (workplace injury and prevention), advises on orthotic therapy and footwear, and treats children with developmental issues. “We do a lot of work with people

with diabetes. They are at a higher risk of developing complications with their feet as often their vascular and nervous supply can be compromised as a result of diabetes,” said Abbe.

AC Podiatry clinics are open at Riverton (at the back of the hospital) on Thursdays 9am to 5pm, and Clare Shop 4, Ness St, Monday–Friday 9am-5pm. 4 Phone 8842 1602 to make an appointment – your feet work very hard for you your entire life, so reward them!

NEWS v Stockport

On the move! Reports and pictures: Les Pearson A SPORT and recreation area at Stockport has quickly taken shape over recent months, fast becoming a fantastic community facility for residents of all ages. The area now features new children’s play equipment under a giant shade cloth, undercover barbecue, personal fitness machines and resurfaced tennis courts. Stockport Community Association (SCA) secretary, Dick French, said work was nearing a close, with only fencing and a small garden left before the area was complete. Of course, every project comes at a cost and there were several contributors towards the town’s new recreation area. A State government Move It program grant of $25,000 grant helped provide the fitness equipment and bulk grain handler, Viterra, provided $5,000 towards the giant shade sail. The SCA paved around the playground, while some money from the flood assistance grants was used to purchase the soft fall. Gawler Rotary Club also chipped in $2,400 for the barbecue, while CWA provided $2,000 in assistance. Crafty Hamley Bridge resident, John Bell, put together three benches with seats, one placed at the barbecue site, while the others will be located at the town’s bus shelter and cemetery. The materials for the benches were also paid for by the flood grant from the State government. Mr French said the SCA would look at finishing the garden and possibly fencing the area in March or April next year. “It looks great out here,” he said.

‘Outback’ in our backyard

S

ITTING around the campfire listening to a guitar, drinking billy tea and tucking into a pig on the spit and freshly cooked damper, sounds like an experience reserved for camping in the outback. It’s something new Stockport Caravan Park owners, Gary Matthews and Sheryl Peitsch, have introduced barely an hour’s drive from Adelaide. Since taking over the running of the park in January, the couple have been pushing the Australiana feel, while also renovating the previously dilapidated and rundown camping facility. “I’ve been in the tourist industry since 1978 and we were looking for a caravan park. We had done a lot of research over the years on what people were looking for, mainly targeting the 40 plus age group,” Gary said. “There are 280,000 ‘grey nomads’ on the highway every day, travelling all over the country. What they’re looking for is Australiana.” The site is set amongst a tranquil, natural environment in the quiet Gilbert Valley town. “The best part of this is we are only an hour out of Adelaide,” Gary said. “The cost of fuel is the biggest issue grey nomads are facing. “To get a campfire, billy tea and damper and a pig on the spit, they either have to go to Birdsville or way up past the Flinders Ranges. “We’re providing an Australian homestead feel, keeping the nostalgia back in the 50s, 60s and 70s, and provide everything they want from within an hour of Adelaide.” The park was packed in the Easter period this year. “We’ve contacted a heap of 4WD clubs. They are absolutely over the moon with it,” Gary said, Sheryl said Stockport stood out

Wizards of Oz are breathing new life into Stockport caravan park

OUT of the coals and camp oven comes a damper delight! as the perfect project for the couple. “We have looked from literally one end of Australia to the other over the past few years,” she said. “All the cards finally fell on the table in the right place at the right times.” Sheryl has a background in agriculture, business and public relations while Gary has strong ties with the tourism industries, a born traveller who has visited at least 70 different countries. Their respective skills come in handy but Sheryl revealed running the park and renovating it was a team effort. “Even on our business cards, we’ve got ‘your hosts Gary, Sheryl

GARY and Sheryl have been working hard to revitalise Stockport caravan park.

GARY MATTHEWS:

There are 280,000 ‘grey nomads’ on the highway every day, travelling all over the country. What they’re looking for is Australiana. and friends’,” she said. “It’s a real community sort of feel, we’ve got a lovely little network of people working with us and they see the big picture. “The big picture is we will retain the Australiana, quiet country feel while having residents who are quality, community people. “At the moment, I think we have a lot of support from the Stockport

community and we want to keep it that way.” The pair also perform the Rock Your Socks Off tribute show, which provides entertainment for guests from time to time. While it is fair to say there is a lot of work ahead of them, what Gary and Sheryl have achieved so far this year is nothing short of amazing, including the park’s office, which was built out of a recycled school building left on the site following the floods of December 2010. “It’s been huge, I have to say,” Sheryl said. “I think it was one of the hottest summers out and one of the coldest winters, so we wore both of that. “It’s a little bit horrifying just seeing how much money goes when

renovating an ablution block for example, even when you’re doing most of the work yourself.” The bush camp setting will look superb once completed, while other ideas are in the pipeline. “We want to have a shop here,” Sheryl revealed. “It will be your general store sort of thing, catering for locals and residents to start with. “It’s going to be step by step. We’ll develop something because we are certain it’s what people want and if from there, we learn they want to do something else, then we will move that way. “We’re not just going to build something and hope people come to it. We’ll be careful about assessing what people want.” www.plainsproducer.com.au

SPORT feature v Basketball

Friday nights light up Adelaide Plains basketball will be looking a lot brighter this year. Last week, the APBA replaced all 14 light globes, most of which have been in use for 20 years. It was hoped this would solve all the problems of the light at the end of the courts not working. However, it seems there was another problem, which will be fixed before the start of the season on Friday, October 12. BJM Electrical from Adelaide brought a special lifter to avoid damaging the courts. A major fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 27 to raise funds to cover the cost of replacing the light globes save this date. Details will follow in future editions of the Plains Producer. For the first time, the APBA has a female president – Tania Heaslip. Annette Wilson, who will continue as secretary, said Tania had taken on the role on behalf of Owen. John Shepherd will continue as vice-president, and although he is the only male on the executive committee, he has no concerns about working with the ladies. Leigh McArdle will continue her role as recorder and Jenny McArdle as treasurer. Annette said while there had been lots of talking happening, she ensures it’s all about basketball. Ray Bennett has stepped down as umpires’ co-ordinator and Ben Shepherd has accepted the position.

Bulldogs Under 16 player, Dylan Bigg, grabs the ball as opponent Thomas Goldney tries to tap it away, during a game last season.

Ben, who also works with Basketball SA, has come to the association with new ideas from his experience in Adelaide. Wayne Hill will also step in to help Ben when his Adelaide commitments require him to be in the city. The APBA thanked Ray for his many years as umpires’ co-ordinator. “We have heard Ray will be back playing the game this year, so we will still see him around the courts,” Annette said. Kirsty Williams and Sasha Tiller will be in charge of the Aussie Hoops kids. With their combined wealth of knowledge in basketball, the Hoops kids will be well looked after. Wayne and Kirsty will be involved in organising the association teams. This year’s competition boasts more sides than ever before. A total of 52 teams will make up sides for Bulldogs, Balaklava, Owen and Long Plains, with three new teams coming from Blyth – one joining the Women’s Division A competition and two joining Women’s Division B – and one team from Clare, which will come under Bulldogs Basketball Club. The Auburn Hawks will unfortunately no longer be playing in the association. Annette also praised club officials for their hard work. With more teams, club officials have been working overtime to ensure this year’s basketball will light up the night.

Les Pearson’s

apfl team of the year

AP FL te am of th e ye ar HALF BACKS

BACK Brad Michael (Bal-

aklava): [Pocket] His selection might raise a few eyebrows but he had an outstandingly consistent year. Very much improved player.

Adrian Mark (Virgin-

ia): [Full back] Without doubt the best full back in the league, due to his height, strength and athleticism.

Heath Pym (United):

[Flank] Runner up in the Producer Medal rotating through the midfield in a team regularly beaten this year.

Sam O’Brien (Two Wells): [Centre half back] Stellar debut season with the Roosters and dominated regularly before his hand injury towards the end of the season. Emmanuel Tsimiklis (Virginia): [Flank]

Sam Baker (HWE):

[Pocket] Capable of taking tall and small forwards and was by far the Eagles most consistent player this year.

Clearly Tsimiklis’ best season, providing rebound and run from half back.

CENTRE

FIRST RUCK

Khan Leighton

Hayden Walker

(Two Wells): [Wing] With speed to burn and outstanding agility, Leighton racked up touches and clearances week in, week out.

Ned Seccafien (Two Wells): [Centre] Has battled hard in the midfield for years, providing grunt around the stoppages and hard running to space.

Valor Thach (Hamley Bridge): [Wing] Probably more suited to the open spaces of the wing, finds the footy enough and has good skills to boot.

(Balaklava): [Ruck] It was a toss up between him and Simon Feast, Walker gets the nod for longevity and his ability to compete at ground level.

Joel Montgomerie

(Mallala): [Ruck rover] This year’s Plains Producer Medallist again had a wonderfully consistent year winning plenty of class touches for his team.

Lachy Michael

(Balaklava): [Rover] The 19-year-old established himself as the number one midfielder at the club, also kicking 21 goals.

INTERCHANGE

HALF FORWARD

FORWARD

Jarred Allmond (Two Wells): [Flank] Named here as he played his best footy drifting back into defence and running forward from this position.

Chris James (Virginia): [Centre half forward] James had a brilliant second half of the year in the ruck but his true position is probably a starting forward. Craig Taylor (Hamley

Bridge): [Flank] Injured for a fair chunk of the season but showed why he is a highly regarded midfielder and forward in country football.

Lee Allmond (Two Wells): [Pocket] Has a

full bag of tricks and is unstoppable when up and going. Injury knocked him around a bit but came good when it mattered.

Brendon Niklaus

(Virginia): [Full forward] Led the league for goal kicking again and booted a bag of six in the grand final, nearing 100 goals for the season.

Glenn Dawson (Balaklava): [Pocket] Arguably the hardest forward to match up on, Dawson’s pace, leap and super boot were on full display this year.

INTERCHANGE

Simon Feast (Two Wells): Spent a long part of the year injured but was great in the games he played, a valuable part of the premiership team.

Ben Russell (Virginia): Widely underrated midfielder who is probably the most consistent performer at the Rams.

Christian Rimmer (Mallala): Managed to be in the best players 10 times from 13 games, which is a fairly consistent, albeit injury interrupted, year.

Scott Hahn (Mallala): Scooter managed 44 goals from just 12 games and proved a handy attacking option for the Magpies.

Further flummoxed by even more frighteningly frenetic football finals fever our field of flannelled flailers fronted furtively for the fray, merely eleven in all for a Stableford event, one won by that everundaunted underdog, the determinedly dogged Doug Taylor (37 points). Grassroots grants available Grassroots sport and active recreation organisations can apply for grants and scholarships now available through State Government funding of more than $775,000, aimed at improving and supporting community sport and active recreation opportunities across the State. Recreation and Sport Minister, Tom Kenyon says the State Government funding is being made available through the Active Club Program and a number of coaching, officiating and volunteer scholarships. “The Active Club Program aims to improve the delivery of community-based active recreation and sport opportunities by offering grants of up to $5,000 to improve equipment and develop programs or the skill base of volunteers, officials and coaches,” Mr Kenyon said.

“The Active Club program is highly valued by the our sporting community because it assists a wide range of sport and active recreation groups to purchase equipment, deliver activities and improve their facilities. “The program allows us to support projects and programs that are strongly driven by all of the volunteers in the local community that keep our sports clubs alive. “The Coaching, Officiating or Volunteering scholarships provide further support for people involved in sport or active recreation to improve their skills and help cover the costs associated with attending courses or purchasing equipment. “They include the Wendy Ey Memorial Scholarships for Women already involved in, or aspiring to become elite

coaches (up to $1500); Coaching scholarships (up to $1000); Officiating scholarships (up to $1000); and Volunteer scholarships (up to $1000). “The State Government has a strong commitment to supporting active recreation and sport programs that assist in improving our health and well being. “I’m confident these funding programs will give tens of thousands of South Australians greater opportunities to be involved in sport or active recreation activities,” Mr Kenyon said. Closing date for both programs is Monday, October 15, 2012. For further information on both funding programs and other support for the Sport and Active Recreation sector provided by the Office for Recreation and Sport visit www. recsport.sa.gov.au.

WHITWARTA resident, Hanne Hejgaard Knudsen, had more success at the Adelaide Show recently, with Eliza, a goat from her Westview Boer Goat Stud, being awarded Grand Champion Boer Goat Doe. Judge’s comments described Eliza as feminine, big, meaty, long, has a good udder, perfect confirmation and carries her weight well, despite being heavily pregnant.

Put a spring in your step

With over 60 per cent of Australians topping the scales as either overweight or obese, health experts are urging the 40 per cent of households that already have a resident four-legged personal trainer to step up their walking program this Spring. Research by Dr Hayley Christian at The University of Western Australia has quantified that dog owners do an extra 55 minutes walking each week compared with non owners. “While it is well known that dog owners experience improved physical, mental and emotional health, this research shows just how much extra physical activity and health benefit you can get by caring for a pet,” says Dr Lyn Roberts, CEO of the National Heart Foundation of Australia. Dr Christian’s research found that over 60 per cent of dog owners achieve the recommended level of 150 minutes of physical activity each week. “It’s really important for all of us to find at least 30 minutes each day to get up and move around. Walking is an easy way to stay active and if you have a dog as your walking partner that’s a great motivator as a dog is never too busy to go for a walk,” Dr Roberts added. “The simple act of walking for half an hour each day can reduce your heart disease risk by up to half and Heart Foundation Walking groups can help you reach that goal.”

FARMING NEWS v District Sheep Sales

Leahcim’s record with $38,000 ram Records and the Leahcim Poll Merino stud at Snowtown seem to go hand in hand – and this year’s recent sale was no exception. A new on-property SA state record price of $38,000 was set when Leahcim 111355 was purchased by Chad Burbidge, Murray Bridge and Gary Ferguson, Tintinara, representing the Superior Wool Syndicate. They outbid Bill Walker, Classings Ltd who was bidding for a WA syndicate comprising Scott Welke, Esperence, the Clark family Brookdale stud, Arthur River and Bruce Pengilly, Penrose stud, Esperence. This price was $7000 above the previous SA on-property record of $31,000 set by Lorelmo-Willalooka and was $13,000 better than Leahcim’s previous high individual ram price of $25,000 achieved at the Classings Classic. Sired by Leahcim 080187, the new record priced ram had wonderful Merino Select wool and carcase figures across the board, highlighted by a yearling fleece weight breeding value of +24 and eye muscle breeding value of +0.5. Chad Burbidge said this was the

best ram in the 200 strong catalogue for his all-round attributes and figures, but particularly for his length of body and wool staple. He said the ram will be mated to more than 2000 ewes in this next mating by AI in Superior Wool Syndicate members’ flocks. Ray and Brad Schroeder, Gunallo stud Murrayville, Jed and Hugo Keller, Ramsgate stud, Tintinara and the Paech family, Lucernebrae stud Callington all negotiated semen shares in this ram. This price was far above anything else at the sale, with $7000 being the second top price, paid by two of the semen share partners in the top ram; Gunallo taking lot 1, L110190 and Ramsgate picking up L111545 at lot 11. Leahcim principal, Andrew Michael, was delighted with this year’s result, when 196 of the 200 sold for a much more affordable $2123 average. “When you take the stud ram purchases out it was even better for our long time regulars. We are delighted all our loyal clients were able to get cheaper rams this year, or purchase a higher quality for the same budget,” Andrew said.

Leahcim’s Alistair Michael holds the impressive $38,000 top priced ram with Chad Burbidge (left), Murray Bridge and Gary Ferguson (right) Tintinara, representing the successful Superior Wool Syndicate purchasers. Also pictured are Jed and Hugo Keller, Ramsgate stud, Tintinara, Elders auctioneer Tom Penna, Ray Schroeder, Gunallo stud, Murrayville and Landmark auctioneer Gordon Wood. Gunallo and Ramsgate also purchased rams at the equal second top price of $7000.

Good value for Suffolks

Buyers received exceptional value for money at Leahcim’s offering of White Suffolk rams during its annual on-property auction on Friday, September 21. Auctioneers Gordon Wood (Landmark) and Damien Webb (Elders) sold 104 rams. First time buyers Ros and Robert Cuthbert, of Glenbrook White Suffolk stud at Darkan, WA, paid $4000 for the top priced stud ram and then picked up his brother for $2000. The four Leahcim White Suffolk stud rams offered at the action averaged $2525. The 100 flock rams that sold at the auction reached a top price of $1200 and averaged $807.

Nyowee sells 130 – Nyowee stud held its annual ram sale at its property east of Balaklava last month. Buyers flocked to the sale, with 130 rams sold at auction, at an average price of $1875. Top priced ram was sold for $6200

to DM Scott & Co, from Andrews, near Spalding. • PICTURED with the ram (from left) Ian Michael, Nyowee, Tony Wetherall, Elders Stud Stock, John and Dan Scott, D M Scott and Co, Andrews, and Robert Michael, Nyowee.

Plains buyers support Ulandi Park sale In a result that bucked the trend of most recent sale results, Clayton and Andrea Rowett and family sold all 88 of their ram offering at Ulandi Park, Marrabel, for a $1280 average, topping at $2000. Described by Landmark auctioneer, Leo Redden, as a superb quality line-up of industry relevant and trait leading, the rams met strong demand from the 30 registered buyers who came mainly from the Adelaide Plains regions. The one thing missing this year was stud demand with only one ram going to a stud buyer. Tim Mudge, ‘Salt Rise’ stud, Port Wakefield, paid $2000 for UP110074, compared with the $5600 top he paid last year. The extra stud ram prices from last year added $58

One of the best and most even quality line-ups of Poll Dorset rams was presented by the Hart family, Glen Devon stud, Two Wells, last week. A gallery of 23 registered buyers eagerly bid for the quality on offer, resulting in a total clearance of 101 rams sold, a similar result to last year. The 101 rams averaged $1050, just $81 below last year, primarily on the back of lesser stud demand. Mark Hill, Gilberside, Tarlee paid the modest $2500 top price for the very impressive GD110331Twin, a first prize winner at the recent Adelaide Royal. The bidding duels throughout the draft were mainly between Adelaide Plains and Victorian Mallee producers, the latter group regularly making the trip down to Glen Devon. Daniel Phillips, Looklong Park stud, Ouyen, Victoria, jumped in early and grabbed the first stud ram GD110190 for $2000. Steve DiGiorgio, Lucindale, another regular purchaser and buying through Landmark Naracoorte’s David Heinrich, was biggest individual buyer on the day, purchasing 17 wonderfully even rams, paying from $800 to $1400. Michael Tiller, through Landmark Balaklava, purchased six to $1200 and JH & WA Franks, through Landmark Mallala, also bought six to $1200. Tim Barrett, through Elders Roseworthy, and Leon Mudge, through Landmark Balaklava with five rams each, were also key contributors to the overall sale success.

KEY participants in the successful Ulandi Park sale. Pictured (from left) are Landmark auctioneer, Leo Redden; Neil and Greg Hampel, Marrabel (three rams to $1600); Andrew Bailey, Yunta (eight rams to $1600); Jason and Shona (right) Conroy and children Tomas and Sinclair, Lyndoch (16 rams to $1400); Ulandi Park principal Clayton Rowett; and Steve DiGiorgio, Lucindale (16 rams to $1400). to that $1306 average, so in effect this year’s flock ram result was $30 up on last year. The top price for flock rams was $1600, paid four times. Matt Michalanney and buying through El-

ders Riverton purchased four rams including one at $1600. Principals Clayton and Andrea Rowett were “blown away” with the result. “It was amazing and

totally unexpected,” Clayton Rowett said. Their commitment to the industry is unquestioned, as indicated by their purchase of a new stud Poll Dorset ram for the new Australian record

price of $28,000 from the Kurralea stud, Ariah Park, NSW just three days before, in partnership with the Janmac stud, Goroke. This ram was the champion at the recent Adelaide Royal show.

installation of water mains as we know them, so we must assume the water needed to fight the fire would have been drawn from nearby wells or maybe creeks. As the population increased and spread further afield, it was necessary to establish fire brigades to serve these new suburbs and some towns. Balaklava was one of the country towns to have its own fire brigade but it wasn’t established until 1921 and only served the town area. It cost £396 to provide one hand cart, hose and accessories, four uniforms, rent and wages for the first year. But what about fire protection for the farming communities?

In colonial times, the government tried to control the outbreak of wildfires by legislating against the careless use of fire. This began with the 1847 ordinance against reckless burn-offs of stubble and grass. The challenge of fire suppression was left to local residents who would band together to fight fires without any formal organisation or authority. In 1913, District Councils were given the right to appoint fire control officers who had the power to do anything “necessary or expedient and practicable” to prevent fires or to protect life and property. The government-equipped volunteer Emergency Fire Service was established during World War II, first in Adelaide, then with additional brigades in some country areas. After the war, equipment from these brigades was lent to District Councils for rural firefighting work. Supervision was provided by

the Emergency Fire Services division that was formed as a division of the police department. In the mid-1950s, the EFS grew stronger and more organised – after campaigning by volunteers, it became a statutory authority in 1976 and, supported by government legislation, it became the Country Fire Service. In 1989, the Country Fires Act saw the state government take over control of the CFS from local councils, allowing for the development of a standardised service across the state. In Balaklava, the EFS began in 1948 and it eventually took over the local SA Fire Brigade service in 1977 so that all local fire fighting services were controlled by one body, as it is today. The SA Fire Brigade changed its name in 1981 and this year, 2012, the SA Metropolitan Fire Service is celebrating its 150th anniversary.

Heritage Highlights

In the early years of South Australia’s settlement, the fire service started with men who had served in the Navy or Army. Records show the South Australian Fire Brigade was officially formed on November 5, 1862, and is now believed to be one of the oldest legislated (government) fire services in the world. Adelaide’s fire brigade headquarters opened in Wakefield Street in 1892 and the SA Fire Service Museum website indicates it is still the headquarters today, albeit significantly upgraded over the years. Early photographs of fire brigades in action tell us that the fire fighters had basic, meagre equipment with which to tackle a fire; hand drawn and horse-drawn carts which carried the hoses to the scene of the fire, but if there was no water tank on the cart, where did the water come from? It was long before the

evidenced in the song’s video. This is what apparently launched it into the stratosphere of fame. Psy can be seen in all sorts of weird locations during the clip, including a sleazy sauna with a few heavy-set fellas around him, on the toilet and under water in a spa bath. It’s this oddball video which caught the attention of rapper, T-Pain, who broadcast the video link to his one million followers on Twitter. Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Tom Cruise did the same. What ever the origin of its fame, the video has now attracted more than 350 million views on YouTube. Now matter how little I like it, “Gangnam Style” will be around for a long while to come. Tune in next time, ‘coz I’m Mr Brightside.

The Proof and Experimental Establishment Port Wakefield is a vital Defence test and evaluation capability that has supported Defence since 1929. These firings may require specific tidal or weather conditions, and are critical for the safety of current and new Defence capabilities. Members of the public may notice noise, vibration, flashes and/or smoke during the testing. There is no risk to the public outside of the gazetted Defence Practice Areas. For reasons of public safety, there is a permanent exclusion zone covering land, sea and air around the Port Wakefield Establishment. My, how time has flown! It seems like only yesterday we witnessed Hamley Bridge take out the Division One premiership yet again – and this Saturday, the new season starts up once again. So, how will the respective Division One sides fare this season? What we do know is that personnel changes will definitely impact on the fortunes of some sides. In Division One, Hamley Bridge has been the best side over the past decade having won nine premierships, the last eight in a row. However, times are a-changing with a number of their senior players venturing elsewhere this season. So, Hamley Bridge Division One will have a totally new look. Will it be good enough to secure another premiership for the club? Only time will tell. With Balaklava now having only one Division One side, it would be expected their side will be somewhat stronger with the better of their players from last season’s two Division One sides likely to be in the one side. Riverton has always been around the mark and should be a threat once again. Where the club finishes will depend on how it performs in the high pressure matches at crucial times during the season. Port Wakefield showed significant improvement last season with the return of Will McPharlin to the side. It is ex-

pected the side will continue to improve and feature among the leading sides of the competition once again. Owen, Mallala and Wasleys were all competitive last season and had the knack of providing significant challenges for other sides. The addition of one, perhaps two, quality players is all that each of these sides needs to be right up there to challenge for a final four position at the end of the season. The stage is set for an interesting Division One competition. The opening round of matches features the intriguing challenge between Port Wakefield and last year’s premiers, Hamley Bridge. Interest in the composition of the Hamley Bridge side will be high and how the new combination performs will be eagerly scrutinised by other clubs. On this occasion, Port Wakefield may hold the advantage with this match being played on its home green. Balaklava and Owen meet at Balaklava this weekend. Again, the final composition of both sides is unknown at this stage but Balaklava should still be favoured to win their opening match of the season. The final match will see Wasleys host Mallala An even match is likely here with the home side perhaps holding a slight advantage at the end of the day. n Continued page 19
