No plan to change rubbish collection THE weekly rubbish collection many Wakefield Regional Council ratepayers receive is in no danger of being reduced to a fortnightly service. A number of metropolitan councils are pushing to change to a fortnightly service to save money, with two major waste collection companies claiming there was no need to
Les Pearson reports: collect general waste every week. WRC chief executive officer, Cate Atkinson, confirmed council had no intention, nor had any discussion, of shifting to a fortnightly collection. However, Mrs Atkinson said WRC’s proposed green waste collection system remained
on hold while council determined its long term financial plan. District Council of Mallala (DCM) has long abandoned the weekly waste collection service in favour of the fortnightly option. Residents in DCM towns have a three-bin service, which includes a 140-litre general waste bin, 240-litre recycling bin and 240-litre
green waste bin. DCM also has a successful food waste collection service, which effectively takes food scraps out of the general waste bins. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said the change was made well before his time with council. n CONTINUED PAGE 4
Eagles look for a big year Players, students counselled over Easter tragedy A COUNSELLING service has been made available to Hamley Bridge Football Club following the tragic loss of young player, 17-year-old Dylan Poulton, of Tarlee, in a car accident at Rocks Reserve on Friday night. HBFC president, Newton Lines, said Adelaide Plains Football League president, Brad Busch, contacted the club to offer the service. “To Brad Busch’s credit, he called and advised us there is counselling available through the league to deal with these sorts of situations,” Mr Lines said. After contacting Dylan’s family, Mr Lines confirmed the club, devastated by the loss, would take up the counselling offer. “We are hoping to have a counsellor up tonight (Thursday) but

Dylan’s memory to be honoured by club • From page 1 “The football club is like an extended family and each person is so important to us, no matter their playing ability,” Mr Lines said. “It wouldn’t have mattered if he had two left legs though, he is still a human being and while we’ve lost a football player, he was also a friend to a lot of us,” he said. “I feel a bit like a fatherly figure to a lot of these kids. “We’re just shell-shocked that he’s gone.”
He had the unfortunate task of informing the senior playing group of the tragedy on Tuesday night. Mr Lines said he struggled to contain his emotions during the address. “The voice was breaking as I was doing it,” he said. “I just can’t imagine what the family is going through.” The HBFC committee discussed how to honour Dylan’s memory at a meeting on Tuesday night. “We would like to put up a
framed photo of Dylan in the football club in memory of him,” Mr Lines said. “My thoughts are to leave it there for 12 months and then pass it on to his parents. “It would be a bit two-fold for any kid about to hop into a motor car, I would hope there would be a message there for other kids.” The club has also offered to host Dylan’s wake, free of charge. He was a passenger in the vehicle that crashed just before midnight
on Friday, which was also carrying four teenage girls. Police believe he was not wearing a seatbelt. The car hit a tree after moving to the wrong side of the road and mounting an embankment. The four girls, aged between 14 and 17, survived with minor injuries. A 14-year-old Mallala girl was airlifted to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, a 16-year-old from Evanston Gardens was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and
another girl, a 17-year-old from Owen, was conveyed to the Lyell McEwin Hospital It is alleged excessive speed caused the crash. The driver, 17, from Balaklava, was reported for causing death by dangerous driving and driving unlicensed. She will appear in the Youth Court at a later date. Police are concerned that this year’s road toll is already 33, compared to 25 at the same time last year.

HOUSEHOLDS across the state will be pushing their clocks backward by one hour and changing their smoke alarm batteries on Sunday. According to recent research, South Australians are still placing their homes at great risk of fire with only six per cent of family households admitting to meeting Australia’s fire and emergency services’ guidelines. Only six per cent of South Australian households surveyed are testing their smoke alarms monthly with 39 per cent changing their smoke alarm batteries yearly. Australia’s fire and emergency services are now in their 13th year of urging Australians to have a working smoke alarm and home escape plan. The “Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery” campaign on April 7 continues to play an important role given house fires are rising year-on-year. “Australia’s fire and emergency services attended more than 13,000 home fires around the country in 2012,” CFA deputy chief officer, Steve Warrington said. “Most of these were caused by faulty electrical equipment or leaving cooking unattended. “Australians are placing themselves in danger by failing to test and check their smoke alarms, according to this latest research.” The 2013 Duracell Fire Safety Survey of Australian mothers also revealed only 33 per cent of family households with a single smoke alarm test it properly (by pressing the button until the siren sounds). To kick off the “Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery” campaign, fire and emergency services in South Australia will sound their sirens as part of a national siren call to remind Australians of the importance of home fire safety and changing their smoke alarm batteries. “Australia’s fire and emergency services recommend using long-lasting nine volt alkaline batteries and regularly testing alarms are working to ensure year-round protection,” Mr Warrington said. Chop the ‘cop’ “
Perhaps make it a monument to a person of significance, or to recognise outstanding achievement? What about a giant flag pole, with the Australian flag proudly flying from it?
HOW it looks with no ‘cop’ – through computer adjustment.
Yes, it’s historically significant, but why is it there, what does it do and who really cares?
B
ALAKLAVA’S ‘Silent Cop’ must go. There, I’ve said it. For the uninitiated, the Silent Cop is the white monolithic object at the centre of the roundabout between Howe Street, Wallace Street and Edith Terrace. It juts out like an ugly thorn at the centre of arguably the town’s most integral road intersection. The Silent Cop’s historical tie to the town is unquestioned. As far as I can find, it has been there since March 1924. The Silent Cop gets its name from its former role directing traffic at the intersection using a light at the top, which is no longer there. I’m told the light is no longer replaced as the bulb was continually stolen. Therefore, the Silent Cop is rendered completely useless. It has no functionality, is treated with little regard to its historical importance and it has to go. Locals in the know inform me it is sunk deep under the

The first is take on a lengthy and expensive path of removing the unsightly structure and replace it with a superb statue or spunky sculpture. The second option is make something of it. While ugly and uninspiring, the Silent Cop appears to be unique to Balaklava. Other towns use these significant locations to place war memorials and historical sites.

Why couldn’t we do something like that with the now defunct piece of infrastructure? Perhaps make it a monument to a person of significance, or to recognise outstanding achievement? What about a giant flag pole, with the Australian flag proudly flying from it? Then work on landscaping the garden around it. It’s nice, but what else could we do? What about this for a brainwave? Install some directional signage on the roundabout to local services or businesses, utilising the Silent Cop. If its original purpose was directing traffic, surely this would be a more than appropriate use for it? Wakefield Regional Council is in the process of revamping the town entries and Balaklava Triangle. Now would be the time to work on initiating some action at the site, lest it gets left behind to remain a futile eyesore at the heart of the town.
THE “silent cop” as it is now – and below, our bit of fun showing how a possible statue could look as a replacement. Malcolm May and Balco have done plenty for Balaklava. Or why not Charles Fisher, Edmund Bowman, Stephen Ralli, William J Verco, David Virgo, Alf Traeger – or others?
AFTER PETITION FROM 230 LOCAL RESIDENTS:
Council to act on ‘derelict’ Balaklava building FOLLOWING a lengthy wait for remedial action at the property on the corner of Humphrey and Wallace Street in Balaklava, Wakefield Regional Council (WRC) Central Ward councillor, Owen Chapman, again raised the issue at last week’s council meeting. The property was the subject of a petition, signed by about 230 locals, claiming the buildings on the property were so derelict they became a safety issue and were also a breeding ground for rats and mice. The petition, submitted to council in May last year, also said the property’s yard was often a fire hazard and cockroaches infiltrate nearby homes. Cr Chapman said he had asked (WRC) community and development services manager, Chris Parish, on progress of the matter in November last year. Mr Parish advised Cr Chapman a meeting had been set for January 14. “Did this meeting take place and if so, what was the outcome?” Cr Chapman posed. “Would council notify the organisers of the petition regarding the current situation of this property?” Mr Parish confirmed the meeting did take place, albeit a week after its scheduled date. “We put it to the owner something needed to be done to the property and gave notice we wanted action sooner rather than later,” he said. “We are yet to get back to him with regards to what we’ve decided but it is on the agenda to take action in the next few weeks.”

Rodney can’t wait for the
event to kick off in Two Wells later in the year and is excited by the amount of exposure the town will receive. In 2008 Rodney was the event’s highest fundraiser, raising a staggering $163,000 for the charity, and has enjoyed visiting some of the state’s, and Australia’s, lesser known towns and communities. This year’s event, titled “Off the Beaten Track”, will begin on August 10 and take in parts of the Eyre Peninsula, including Lucky Bay at Cowell and Streaky Bay, before heading inland through the Gawler Ranges to Quorn, then on to Burra and finally finishing at McLaren Vale on August 17. “The bash is putting the fun in fundraising,” Rodney smiled. “It’s a meandering drive
through the outback (and) we get to access parts of the country that are not open to the public.” District Council of Mallala mayor, Duncan Kennington, said the event would be a great opportunity for local sporting and community groups to benefit and also promote the district to a wide audience. “Variety is a well-respected charity doing excellent work assisting children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs,” Mr Kennington said. “Local businesses and community groups have the opportunity to be involved and share in the economic activity generated by the event (and) the media exposure of the event will attract attention to the council area and in particular the Two Wells township.”
No dead fish sighted
Holiday traffic jam near Wakefield A LINE of traffic up to 10 kilometres long greeted homeward bound holiday makers on their way into Port Wakefield on Monday. Delays were enhanced when a pedestrian, a 41-year-old Virginia man, died after being hit by a car on Port Wakefield Road, late on Monday afternoon.
The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure had traffic control officers on the job throughout the day of road chaos. Yorke and Mid North LSA Operations Senior Sergeant, Martin Bazeley, said the bottleneck of traffic tends to be exacerbated when Easter falls outside of the school holidays.
UNEXPLAINED deaths of marine life washing up on beaches at the southern end of the Gulf St Vincent are concerning local commercial fishers. Port Wakefield haul net fisher, Bart Butson, said the mystery surrounding recent deaths of firstly fish and more recently, dolphins, must be answered quickly. “I’m looking forward to finding out because it is quite a worry,” Mr Butson said. He believed any mass fish deaths should be of both concern and interest to the fishing industry. “It does seem to come as a coincidence they have happened in close proximity of the desalination plant and not long after it has been turned on,” Mr Butson said. He said there were fish deaths in other areas of the state due to the hot summer weather. “There haven’t been mass fish deaths at the top of the gulf to my understanding – and the top of the gulf would be fairly warm water as well.”
WRC rubbish collection will not change • From Page 1 DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said the change was made well before his time with council. “The fortnightly collection came about the same time that council introduced the recycling service, back in 1999,” he said. “It was driven by the need to manage the resources at the time, given the inclusion of the additional recycling service. “Council did receive some community concerns at the time, similar to the concerns expressed in recent media articles (about smell) but over time the community have been able to adapt to the fortnightly
collections.” DCM owns the trucks used to collect the district’s waste, of which, general and recyclable waste is taken to Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA), while green waste is taken to Peats Soil and Garden Supplies at Dublin. “The current operations have been in place for many years and has provided us with a good balance of service levels and expenditure,” Mr Mansueto said. “Our waste crews also do other activities like picking up dumped rubbish. “We are in the process of developing a waste strategy that will determine the future of how
we manage our waste services given the expected growth in the district. “This strategy may identify a different approach to how we deliver these services but at this stage, it’s too early to predict what that will be.” Last year, DCM spent about $108,000 on dumped rubbish and litter collection, while about $52,000 has been expended so far this year. “The cost and how we manage this service will be considered in the development of the waste strategy,” Mr Mansueto confirmed. “The strategy will also look into how we can better engage
with the community to reduce waste levels through education and awareness programs.” Residents in DCM towns have a three-bin service, which includes a 140-litre general waste bin, 240-litre recycling bin and 240-litre green waste bin. DCM also has a successful food waste collection service, which effectively takes food scraps out of the general waste bins. “We did a trial with food scrap collection bins last year, from which we got some positive feedback, so we maintained that for those that wanted it,” Mr Mansueto said.

NO KIDDING! – They say you lose your memory when you are pregnant and have children. That seems to be the case for one local lady, who is pregnant with her third child. After shopping the other day, she packed in her groceries, secured her two boys in their car seats, and drove off. Her mother was walking along the street and saw a pram about to be put in the front window of the chemist. She thought, “that looks familiar.” Sure enough, it belonged to her daughter. The scary part is, it wasn’t the first time she’d done it. Last time she found the pram in the front window of the butcher’s shop! (Now you know where the term “little boys” comes from!) No, it’s OK really, neither of the children were still IN the pram, but there’s always next time.

Born and bred locals, Des and Karleen Brooks, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 16. They held their reception 50 years ago in the institute, so decided they should have a little re-enactment for their anniversary. The group was smaller this time, but Des, Karleen, their whole original bridal party,
including their flowergirl, (pictured), family and some friends, attended a dinner in the institute supper room. The pair had their wedding dress, suit, and going away outfits complete with accessories, all on display, but Karleen said the wedding dress has shrunk! That means more than one quarter of this year has been wasted away by me procrastinating about such jobs as organising photos into chronological/subject order, cleaning the range hood (let’s face it, I’m 163cm tall and it’s 180cm high so I can’t actually see it, ergo, it’s never going to happen), purging the ‘green bag’ stock pile, and going through the laundry to find that odd, possibly organic, and slightly unsettling smell (I’m sure if I wait long enough it will take care of itself anyway). When did time speed up? Where have those days gone when I would watch the clock above the teacher’s desk waiting for the bell to ring? Where have the weekends gone when I’d walk around listlessly in search for the next exciting thing to happen or for Mum to finally give in and drive me somewhere? For the love of grey hair, where have the weeks gone that seemed to drag on until that sweet feeling of Friday afternoon finally hit? Nowadays I’m barely done with last week and this week is already demanding attention! Never mind the fact this is a short week anyway! It’s as though the day you turn 21 your life is sped up just a little, and then for every year after, maybe until about…let’s say, retirement, it’s hurried up a little more. When you are young, waiting for something feels so painfully protracted and as though it may never come. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and I was having fun back then as I am now, but the sand in the hour glass sure seems to be slipping out far quicker these days. I’ve heard people say, ‘if only you could freeze time.’ What I would do if I could freeze time? I’d go on holiday with my little family. That’s what. I wouldn’t spend it doing all the things I ought to be doing. I’d drink a never ending cider, listen to limitless amounts of my children’s laughing, stories and play and I’d just enjoy it while holding my husband’s hand. What would you do if you could freeze time?

Keep chocolate away from pets
Easter eggs - yummy for humans but not good for pets, according to one animal charity. Leading vets warn owners to keep chocolate away from their furry friends. They say the sweet stuff can be dangerous for them because some of the ingredients aren’t safe for animals like dogs to eat. Poppy, a puppy from Adelaide, had to be treated by vets after eating a whole Easter Egg. Dark chocolate is the biggest risk for dogs as it contains the most theobromine, a safe ingredient for humans, which can be harmful for animals. “Many pet owners love giving their pet a treat but are unaware of the dangers of chocolate,” one vet advised. “If you can’t resist giving them a little Easter treat, make sure it is something pet-friendly, suitable and safe.”

NEWS v District
School bus route concern SCHOOL bus drivers in the district have expressed their disappointment in the standard of roads in the southern end of the Wakefield Regional Council district. WRC chief executive officer, Cate Atkinson, confirmed council had received a letter on behalf of some local school bus drivers outlining their concerns regarding the condition of several bus routes. After becoming aware of the letter, Central Ward councillors, Owen Chapman and Maurice Tiller, drove along some of the routes outlined. Both councillors spoke on the matter at last week’s council meeting, requesting ur-

gent action. “We need to do something about it soon, if we possibly can,” Cr Tiller said. Mrs Atkinson said council was taking action, claiming infrastructure services manager, David Hassett, is following up with the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD).
“David is looking into the concerns and will be confirming with DECD that the routes being used are those agreed to,” she said. “The condition of roads is an ongoing concern for staff right across the Council area, particularly given the lack of rain. “Council is working hard to ensure its
grading program is completed for the current year. “Council members endorsed a roads maintenance program for the 2013/2014 year in February, however a follow up roads forum will be held with them to discuss how this and other road issues can be addressed.”
Jim pushes boundaries in charity Kokoda trek
O
Les Pearson reports:
F all the physical and mental challenges out there, trekking the notorious Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea certainly rates as one of the toughest and it is a battle Jim Goode is ready to embrace. Jim, who is based in Evanston, was the Regional Umpiring Director, which encompassed the Adelaide Plains Football League, for two years in 2010 and 2011. He plans to trek the trail from June 28 to July 5, in doing so, raising money for children’s charity, Novita. The trail itself is 96km long, crossing rugged and isolated terrain, which is only passable on foot. It shot to prominence following an intense battle involving predominantly Australian forces, defending our nation from Japanese invasion in 1942. Its significance ranks with the Gallipoli landings of World War I. The trail is known for intense climbs, reaching a height of 2,190 metres at one stage. Hot, humid days with intensely cold nights are general characteristics of the trail, along with torrential rainfall and the risk of endemic tropical diseases such as malaria, which tend to make it a challenge to walk. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Jim said. “If I don’t very soon, I won’t be able to do it, as it is very physi-
n JIM Goode with a Novita collection container. Keep an eye out for them at local footy clubs and pubs.
After training for a year, he will need all his football fitness
cally demanding. “I’m also really interested in the time Japan tried to invade Australia. “I went to a museum in Darwin and I thought the next thing I need to do is Kokoda. “That part of the world really interests me; what the soldiers had to put up with. Some people have died doing it and a lot of people have needed to be flown out.” He has one predominant goal in mind: finishing. “If I’m going to go to raise some money, I’ve got to finish it,” Jim said. “I’ve been training for 12 months, because you’ve got to be really fit and motivated.” He will join a group of 14 flying over at the end of June. Cost is nearly $8000. “It is really expensive,” Jim explained. “I’m not raising the money to pay the $8000, I’m paying that myself.” His decision to support Novita came after an umpires’ fundraising function in 2011, which was attended by Central District footballers, Chris and James Gowans,
ambassadors for the charity. The Gowans subsequently provided Jim with 100 of their biographies to sell, from which $10 will go towards Novita. Jim will also be putting donation tins in clubs around the region, while donations can also be made online. “I met a lot of people doing the regional umpiring manager’s job and I’m sure the clubs will get behind me,” he said. “I’ve got heaps of tins out there but I don’t want to infringe on
clubs already collecting for other charities and causes. I’m mindful of that.” Barossa Novatel has donated two nights accommodation, including breakfast, to go to the club raising the most money. “So, they could give it to a goal umpire, volunteer, life member, whatever,” Jim said. “There will be other prizes for clubs raising the most money.
“So far, I’ve raised $1300 and the season hasn’t started yet.” Jim said Mallala Hotel was leading the fundraising at the moment. For more information or to make a donation, call Jim on 0432 419 062, or www.everydayhero.com. au/kokodaforkids.
WITH REPORT COMING TO WRC ON VIABILITY:
Business interest in Everard depot Everard Central Waste Transfer Station has attracted the interest of a businessman from Western Australia, who met with Wakefield Regional Council last month. The businessman, Chris Forrester, had a meeting with WRC chief executive officer, Cate Atkinson, and infrastructure services manager, David Hassett, to discuss potential future use of the site. Mrs Atkinson said Mr Forrester’s initial inquiry related to establishing a business at the Everard Central site, disposing of large agricultural and industrial tyres, similar to a site he runs in Western Australia. At last week’s council meeting,
Western Ward councillor, Richard Pain, also asked about the future potential of disposing of asbestos at the Everard Central Waste Transfer Station. Mrs Atkinson said the Central Local Government Region had consultant and waste expert, Trevor Hockley, investigating the future viability of the Everard Central site. “Trevor has been engaged and has inspected the site and is currently working on his advice to council,” she said. Mrs Atkinson offered to pass on Cr Pain’s asbestos disposal query to Mr Hockley to consider as part of his assessments for the site when providing his final report back to council.

This year, 2013, marks 100 years since the Balaklava Courthouse was officially opened. Today, of course, we know it as the Balaklava Courthouse Gallery, but let’s look at its history. Change & Challenge tells us the local community had felt, for many years, that a courthouse was needed, to deal with matters of law and order. Previously, court sittings had been held in a variety of places including the lodge room or library subscribers’ reading room at the local Institute, but these venues were not always available when a court needed to be convened. After much agitation, the Balaklava Courthouse was erected and officially opened on Wednesday, October 29th 1913. Adjoining the police station, it also had a clerk’s office and a magistrate’s room. Many leading citizens were invited, as well as the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr. F. Young) and Mr. O.H. Duhst, MP. The presiding magistrate for the district, Mr. J.T. Keates SM, handed the keys to District Council Chairman, Mr. J.R Heard. In his address Mr. Keates drew attention to the building’s entrance which featured two pillars representing justice; he commented that he was not aware of any other

ANOTHER AFL season, another disappointment from Channel 7. After purchasing the broadcast rights for every game, every week, Channel 7 seems to have forgotten its responsibility when it comes to broadcasting the Sunday evening twilight match. I can’t say the station has done everything wrong, opting to broadcast Friday night games live, rather than the ungodly hour of 8.30pm previously. drowsy in the morning, regretting staying up so late, that is the sign of a good show. I would liken “Game Of Thrones” to “Merlin” or something similar, albeit with a bit more adult content, with the classification to boot. Just a note on the current music scene, two ‘new’ songs to surge onto the charts that I’m already abandoning is Nelly’s “Hey Porche” and Passenger’s “Let Her Go”. My gripe about “Hey Porsche” is how tacky it is, with its lyrics generally relating to both cars and women. Nelly is generally a serious hip-hop artist but this song is clearly a desperate grab for cash, which appears to be working. “Let Her Go” is already overplayed and its chorus will wear thin on listeners in no time. Mark my words.

matches telecast into my lounge room. I’m not against paying for television but the principle of opting for some drubby drama repeat over a live AFL match is deplorable. Lift your game Channel 7. One show I have at last got into is “Game of Thrones”, a drama based on medieval times. “Game of Thrones” has been around for a few years, albeit never broadcast on Australian free-to-air television. It isn’t a show for little kids, as the violence and philandering can be a bit graphic. However, that aside, there is a cracking seemingly perpetual storyline that continues to hook me into watching another episode when I should be going to bed. When you wake up

This building continued to serve the district well until the new police station was built in 1986. The fate of the old courthouse building was debated within the community and it was eventually reopened as Balaklava Courthouse Gallery in 1991, guaranteeing its preservation into the future.

Mr. Walter Blake, who had been senior justice for many years, spoke of the old days when cases were tried in a room at the Royal Hotel and prisoners were tied up in sheds or any other available space. It was also well known that justice had often been dispensed in the blacksmith shop of Mr. Ted Anders. While the new building was well lit and ventilated, it was apparently overlooked when electricity came to Balaklava a few years later. One

NEWS v District SNOWTOWN COMMUNITY IS ...
Skating along! Snowtown residents are thrilled to see action at the skate park site, with the preparation of the area now completed, ready for concrete to be poured. Local, Kevin Weepers cleared and levelled the site before Christmas, with Wakefield Regional Council preparing the base and adding rubble in February. Catcon, the construction company in charge of building the Stage 2 Wind Farm at Snowtown, has generously donated the concrete slab to the Snowtown community.
This generous donation has saved the project more than $35,000, and has enabled the Skate Park Committee to utilise its other funds to build a better skate park. The base is set to be poured within the next week. After the slab is finished, steel components to complete the skate park will be built on site and secured to the concrete. Skate Park committee member, Bernie Altmann, is looking for some volunteers to help with construction of skate jumps.
n In front of the prepared area for the skate park are Bernie Altmann, Michelle Dohnt and Tanya Warner with excited local children, Kartia Altmann, Cooper Altmann, Brooke Jamieson, Henry Warner and Austin Altmann. “The supervisor requires help with steel components to build the ramps and jumps, and we’re looking for some capable people to help out,”

she said. If you can help, even if just for a day or few hours, please phone Bernie on 0438 780 206. Once the park is finished,
the committee will then build fences, a shelter and barbecue area, which will also benefit the caravan park area. The committee and chil-
dren of the town are hopeful the park will be operating before the end of school holidays, which run from Monday, April 12 to Monday, April 29.
Leading the way with sales and service From this week, Balaklava locals will notice a new business name in town. Local electrical appliance store, Retravision, has been dedicated to staying in front of the pack, with leading brands, products, advice, service and support. Owner and local trader, Jeff Karklins, of Balaklava Electronics, has now taken the leap to join the nationwide group, “Leading Appliances,” effective from
Tuesday, April 2, and will enjoy the buying power, management support and industry backing of one of Australia’s largest retail support groups. While the local store will be sporting the new and distinctive “Leading Appliances” signage, Jeff assures customers the professional and efficient service provided by his friendly staff will not change. All the things customers have come to depend on will be preserved, and Jeff will continue to provide expert advice, personalised customer service and dedicated local back up. In recent years, consumers have noticed a huge explosion in modern technology, whether it be from kitchen, laundry and household

Cicca’s mission to lift Eagles from foot of the table
WELCOME to the Plains Producer’s Adelaide Plains Football League 2013 Season Preview. Inside, you will find all the important details about each of the APFL clubs in the lead-up to the footy season, kicking off this weekend.

IF you were looking to lift a club from the bottom of the ladder, there would be no better start to your off-season recruiting than picking up a player like Justin Cicolella. Despite returning to his home club, Cicolella could still be considered the perfect recruit for Hummocks-Watchman Eagles (HWE). He’s experienced, fit, has a huge work rate, outstanding attitude and comes out of SANFL football still playing outstanding football. Most importantly, he’s a local with his home club at heart.
Compiled by Plains Producer journalist, Les Pearson, the preview also features several profile and analytical articles to stir up the imagination ahead of the first bounce on Saturday.

2013 Season Preview
APFL board’s busy preseason finetuning off-field footy matters Once again the season opener is here. Summer sports are all complete and now the big action is about to start with this week’s split round. Season 2013 is shaping up to be another big one on the plains. The board have been finetuning all football matters over the summer break and now are ready for Saturday’s opener. This season the umpires are still under the command of Doug Tallboy. Doug is very happy with his numbers this year. Recruiting has been very successful. Doug and his team have been successful in recruiting a few extra umpires from different leagues and training numbers have been fantastic. Unfortunately, we all love to hate these men in white but without them the game would be rather difficult. The umpires have informed me that they are fit and ready to go.
By APFL president Brad Busch We look forward to meeting the new and old umpires back to the plains and wish them all a great season. Peter Butterfield again heads the junior panel up. Already this year, we have seen some challenging issues for the junior panel. Some clubs are struggling with numbers when it comes to senior colts. Under age football is very
important to the plains as these players and parents are the back bone for any club. These people are the up and coming leaders of every club and I urge anyone who is not playing footy or interested in playing to contact your local club and even bring a mate. These lads are our up and coming grass-roots footballers and we all need you to be on board. The APFL Board has basically remained the same as last year. President - Brad Busch Vice President - Rocky Musolino Secretary - Deb Robertson Treasurer - Cathy Lewis Recorder/Clearence officer Andy Seccafien Directors - Colin Jenner, Martyn Bell and Michael Coe. Tribunal secretary Greg Tucker. Once again the APFL will be participating in the annual Landmark Cup held on the June long weekend. This year’s event will be
hosted by the NAFA and played at Jamestown. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it three in a row last year but have finetuned the rules so we don’t see a repeat of last year. A special thanks to our coach, Andy Michael. Andy has been very successful in his role for the last three years and has stepped aside due to his appointment as Central Zone coach. This is a marvellous achievement for Andy and the Adelaide Plains and we are very fortunate to have his passion and enthusiasm in this role. We wish Andy every success in this role and urge all clubs and players to get behind him this year and make yourselves available for the zone. This year’s Country Championships will be played at Port Pirie. Once again this year, we will be holding our ANZAC round. This will be held on April 27 at Virginia, who will be hosting United.
2013 will see the start of a finals rotation system for all clubs. This will enable clubs to plan for years to come with regards to hosting finals and to get a better share in proceeds generated from finals. This year also sees the finals go back to the traditional four weeks with no Saturday/Sunday finals. The first semi final will be played at Hamley Bridge, second semi final at Lochiel, preliminary final at Virginia and the grand final at Long Plains. To all our very loyal sponsors, a big thank you to you people. Our major league sponsors are BTR Excavations and Bendigo Bank Virginia. A special thanks to you people as you continued your generous support, which is greatly appreciated. I would like to wish all football and netball teams every success and look forward to a great year on and off the field in season 2013 and urge everyone to get involved with your local club.
Always coming home: Cicolella • From Page 1 His playing portfolio includes five top three finishes in the Magarey Medal, three club champion awards with Woodville-West Torrens, two SANFL premierships and games record holder at the Eagles. The significance of Cicolella’s return is not lost on HWE, the club using him as its ‘poster’ player on club newsletters. He said the return to HWE following retirement from the SANFL was a fairly straightforward decision. “I just weighed up my options after my retirement, which was about finishing footy at that level for me,” Cicolella said. “I didn’t really take too much notice of the offers from other clubs and didn’t have many other meetings with any other clubs, just the one. “I told them that I wasn’t interested in putting a lot of pressure on myself or travelling very far. “It seemed easiest to play at my home club and also play a few years with my brother (Dylan).” He has enjoyed coming back to his grassroots club.
“It’s been good so far,” Cicolella said. “Obviously it’s been a bit more relaxing at training but I’ve tried to come back and help with stuff like intensity at training. “I’ve tried to lift that intensity back here and hopefully lift ourselves from the bottom of the ladder. “The club has a really good history since it started and has been pretty successful. “Last year fell away a bit but I’m enjoying the process of trying bring it back to where it should be and that’s playing finals footy. “We’ve worked pretty hard in the preseason with reasonable numbers on the track. “There’s a lot of good young lads out there that are willing to learn and train hard, so I reckon improvement is just around the corner.” He will take on an unofficial developmental role with the playing group this year. “I’m just playing but coming back from a pretty organised footy club, so I’ll have a little bit to do with developing kids and stuff like that,” Cicolella said. “I’m looking forward to seeing a few of the kids improve a bit and change the way the footy club is

JUSTIN Cicolella (centre) at HWE training. going.” The change in travel demands has taken a bulk load of pressure from the midfield maestro. “It’s made life a fair bit easier at the moment, not travelling back and forth so much but my partner still lives in Adelaide, so I still go back there a fair bit,” Cicolella said. “But it has been one extreme to the other and made life so much more relaxing.” The drop in standard can affect the output of players who formerly played at an elite level, a la Peter Burgoyne, who never really showed just why he was so revered with Port Adelaide Power in his time at United in recent years.

A grade runner-up: Cicolella had no such concerns, citing attitude as the key element when stepping down a level or two. “I hold a belief that you get out what you put in and if you come back and don’t want to train or uphold the standards you’ve held over a long time, you will slip backwards,” he said. “If you train harder than everyone else, stay fit, you should be able to play at the standard you want to play. “I just love playing footy and being competitive. “It doesn’t matter if I’m playing league footy in Adelaide or country footy here.”

Bombers retain recruits, add extra arsenal
AFTER years of wallowing in the dank depths at the foot of the Adelaide Plains Football League table, is there light at the end of the tunnel for Hamley Bridge? The Bombers have already managed several small wins off the field before the 2013 season has begun. The first win comes from breaking a seven-year horror hoodoo of ‘winning’ the wooden spoon last year. “Last year was more of a molding year to try and get some players back to the club, like Ryan Appleton, Angus Martin and others,” A grade coach, Ash Barnett explained. “Then we tried to recruit some players to go around them and give the club more of a sound base, so the people playing here are training here too, that sort of thing. “On paper, we finished fifth and missed the wooden spoon, that’s great from the outside looking in. “I was probably a little bit disappointed in our efforts, as I thought there were at least three other games we should have won, which would have given us close to seven wins and you’re suddenly up around the mark there.” The second and probably biggest win was retaining the recruits from the 2012 season, after an en masse walkout at the end of 2011.
“I think with the way footy is these days, it’s imperative to retain your recruits,” Barnett said. “We’ve got a couple of guys here we’re trying to build around too. “The likes of Shane Hanson, Craig Taylor, Nathan Flynn, Valor Thach and with Kirk Heberle being an assistant coach, he’s here for the long haul. “That’s been the plan from day one, was recruit the right guys and retain them. “That vision hasn’t changed.” The depth was again tested in 2012, so the push to have more locals come back to the club, while adding more recruits to the club, continued in the off-season. Matthew Armstrong comes into the squad from Eastern Park, while Justin Zanandrea (Kapunda), Toby Hasledine (Moonta) and Malcolm Greenwood (Barmera-Monash), round out an impressive list of ins. “We’ve tried to get a bit of experience and a bit of youth,” Barnett said. “Hopefully we’ll get a few more local lads back too, so fingers crossed at this stage. “You’re not going to get many more experienced footballers running around the country than Malcolm Greenwood. “He’ll be in the middle of the
“That’s been the plan from day one, was recruit the right guys and retain them.” - Ash Barnett
Shane Hanson ground most of the time and he can be fairly dangerous up forward. “ T h e n Zanandrea has been living locally for the last seven or eight years and he’s a good 21 or 22-year-old kid to have on board. “He’ll be exciting to watch.” Preseason has been a mix of impressive efforts but reduced attendance. “We haven’t had the numbers this
year, which has been a bit disappointing,” Barnett said. “The kids have stepped up a bit, which has been good. “Sam Collings and Liam Henneker have both had good preseasons. “Rhys Darwin has also been to most of them. “It’s good to have someone with Greenwood’s professionalism too, he’s led from the front a bit, and Taylor, they’re setting the standard.” Barnett believes the improved team structure will be a good starting point for improvement. “This year, we’ve got more of an idea of what we’ve got and we’re always hopeful Justin Schahinger will come back,” he said. “He trains here half the time and if he doesn’t get a decent go this year, with a bit of luck, we could see him back.” Barnett acknowledged the required lift needed to mount a serious premiership threat but refused to dismiss the possibility of the Bombers soaring into finals contention. “We are coming from a fair way back from last year’s top four,” he said. “Time will tell, it does depend on depth and injuries to some extent as well. “There shouldn’t be two or three games in a row where we’re competitive, followed by a big blowout. “We have a team now that should be competitive each week and we’ll hopefully win a few more too.”

THE unwanted mantle of wooden spooners sat uncomfortably with Hummocks-Watchman Eagles club officials in the offseason. It was a major driver behind enlisting the services of former Eudunda-Robertstown coach, David Cluse, a noted fitness fanatic with known rapport with both junior and senior players. Cluse said he leapt at the opportunity to re-enter the senior coaching fray after a brief hiatus. “I was looking to coach senior football again,” he said. “It’s reasonably close to where I live, so it fits in alright, and I did a bit of background research and saw HWE has been a really successful club for a long period of time. “When I spoke with club officials initially, they were most impressive. “Last year was a bit abnormal in terms of no success and where they finished and they were really keen to get back on top. “So, it was probably opportunity number one and the timing was right. “I’ll be able test some theories which go around in my head about what success“...Now we’ve got ful football maybe 10 or 11 teams do. “I don’t blokes that can run have any through the middle.” issue with - David Cluse working with a team

Former Woodville-West Torrens and South Adelaide player, Bradley Graham, has also joined United. “He played quite a bit of reserves footy and he’s certainly led from the front with his enthusiasm and work rate,” White said. “I’d certainly anticipate he’ll be running through the midfield this year.” Koby and Tyson Ettridge, recruited from Greenacres, will play vital roles in the ruck and as a key forward respectively. “They’ve fit in well and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them,” White said. “We knew if we could get hold of a decent ruckman, a key forward and a couple of midfielders, it was going to be a decent start. “So, that’s the way we went and we were lucky to be able to pick up these boys.” The season’s expectations are also pretty clear-cut. “The first aim is to improve on last year, so hopefully that’s not too hard to do,” White said. “Wherever I go, I like to push for a finals spot, you’ve got to have that goal. “Obviously the top four last year was way above everyone else, so we will have to bridge that gap while also beating the sides that were previously down with us. “There’s a lot of work to be done, so the expectation is to try and get a few wins on the board early and set ourselves up for a spot in the top four.”

Pundits predict ‘Pies to push for Plains premiership A LOT of pundits out there are predicting Mallala to once again rise from the ashes after going down in flames against Virginia in last year’s first semi final. In his second season at the helm, A grade coach, Steve Lubcke, is keen to validate that train of thought and go deeper into the finals series. “What we’re doing this year is trying to get everything in place so we don’t get in that position again,” he said. “The first criteria for all sides is firstly to make the top four, then work from there. “ W e m a d e it that far but didn’t go any f u r t h e r, which was disappointing. Rookie Ben Martin, like the rest of his teammates, will be called upon for improvement this year.
“It comes down to a lot of things – and maybe we weren’t good enough – but what we’ve done is taken that disappointment and used it, perhaps not as a catalyst, but it has certainly been impressed upon the group.” Lubcke believed following his first year, he now has a better grasp of what playing personnel the club has to fill the team’s positions. “Now I’m looking at building up some strengths and patching up our weaknesses as well,” he said. Preseason has impressed him so far. “We’ve been reasonably happy with that, numbers wise,” Lubcke said. “During the preseason, we’ve been focussing on our processes and getting them better. “I thought we fell apart last year in some of our processes under pressure.” Recruiting has been fruitful, with tall key forwards Angus Brugge“We need improvemann and Ben Parish ment across the board joining the squad, along to be premiership with midfielder, Dale King. contenders.” “I was very selective - Steve Lubcke in recruiting, because

“Unknown” players billed as Member for Goyder Rams’ X-factor THE dawn of a new era at Virginia arrives on Saturday, when the Rams are headed by a new, younger figure at the helm. Coach, Joss DenEngelse, replaces Greg Phillips at the Rams after five seasons and three consecutive grand final defeats. Part of the playing group last year, DenEngelse has taken on the extra responsibility in a bid to establish himself as a genuine football coach. “I think the boys were looking for a bit of a change,” he said. “I’ve just tried to bring a bit of professionalism and work ethic to the training track to take into game days, and adhere to that week to week.” After a previous stint as player/coach with the now defunct Smithfield Football Club, DenEngelse has experience trying to lead a side while out on the field. He knows better than anyone, it’s not an easy task
but one he’s keen to have a crack at. “At the moment, I’m going to give it a go,” DenEngelse said. “It would probably be easier to do it out (Smithfield), as it is a bit of a different competition here. “Coaching is ultimately what I want to do, so if playing doesn’t work out, I’ll just coach but I don’t want to give it away just yet.” He will also be touching on experience playing Division One amateur league football with Salisbury North, in attempting to reload his team for another premiership tilt. “I’ll be trying to change some structures and how we go about things,” DenEngelse said. “We’re going to have to become a bit smarter in that aspect. “I’m not going to try and change up too many things. “The boys have played in the last three grand finals and

Roost rulers keen to crow again THE only thing harder than winning an A grade premiership, is winning two in a row. That is the task in front of a young Two Wells squad looking to build a premiership dynasty preceded by a drought spanning two decades. Reflecting on 2012, A grade coach, Mark Thomson, said there were several key ingredients to turn 2011’s sixth place, into premiership glory within 12 months. “The influence of getting (ruckman) Simon Feast and (utility) Jarred Allmond into the side, with their SANFL experience and bringing that to the group was important,” Thomson said. “Add to that, (Anthony) Pontt and Sam (O’Brien), they’re a couple of good tall lads from Salisbury. “Also, the development of the local lads. “They were all a year older and had a big preseason, starting in November 2011.” The Roosters were a quick, fit unit last season, displaying dash out of defence and fast ball usage, which was unmatched by any other club. The following comments will come as bad news to challenging teams. “We still started in November and probably had six runs before Christmas,” Thomson said. “We probably came back
this year about a week later, and we’ve eased it off the past week and a half, but we’d be fitter than last year, I’d say. “Andrew Hardiman has been leading the running and Ben Spiteri is not far away either. “Ben hasn’t had the endurance in the past but this year, for some reason, he has and really picked that up. It is important to note how limited the season was for

2013 Season Preview
THE bitter taste of defeat in last year’s preliminary final at the hands of Virginia still lingers for Balaklava A grade coach, Stuart Lamond. Lamond, entering his fourth year in charge of the Peckers, heavily laments the loss. “It was a bit of an empty feeling because if you get to a grand final, at least you give yourself a chance to win it, but if you finish third, you’ve got no chance,” he said. “We’re definitely a bit bitter and I’m hoping everyone playing this year shares that feeling. “We worked hard to get ourselves that top spot but to go out in straight sets was disappointing.” The Peckers are faced with a forward line predicament, with Jonathon Brice ruled out for most of the year and Glenn Dawson having another crack at Woodville-West Torrens. The pair kicked more than 110 goals between them in both 2011 and 2012. “We’re just going to need to change the way we play footy a bit,” Lamond said. “With those targets there, we did probably try to go to them a bit too much sometimes. “It may help us in some regard with our efficiency and reduce our predictability. “There were times we went to them when they probably
weren’t the best option.” Lamond said he has options to fill the void. “It will mean we will have a bit more of an even forward line with different people rotating through there,” he said. “Guys we rotated off the bench may get more of an opportunity to rotate into the forward line instead. “That includes Lachy Michael, (recruit) Dean Storic, Jason and Todd McPharlin. “Those guys have very good goal sense and have shown in trials they are going to be very valuable up forward as well. “Hayden Walker will be playing a lot more forward throughout the season, which is similar to how he played in 2011. “Brice missed the last six games in 2011 and we filled that hole pretty well. “It’s not easy to replace blokes like that though.” The key forward vacancy opens up for Luke Guy, who has been waiting in the wings. “It’s a great opportunity for Luke Guy,” Lamond said. “He’s been there abouts for the last few years but because we’ve had other key options up there, Luke now gets an opportunity to be that forward line target. “No doubt he’s capable of doing that.” Recruiting has been rela-

depth,” Lamond said. The preseason has stepped up from previous years. “From my point of view, I’ve looked at what I’ve done over the last three years and like everything, you try and keep things fresh,” Lamond
said. “If I kept doing the same thing at training with preseason year in, year out, guys are going to get sick of it, especially at our level. “We’ll probably get the same results in terms of the run in our legs but about six weeks in, we will get a bit more of a gauge on whether we’ve worked hard enough in the preseason or not. “I think what we did this preseason this year was harder than what we’ve done previously.” It has been the youngsters that impressed in the summer months. “Tate Michael and Josh Butterfield have shown that they’re keen to do the hard work when stepping up to that next level,” Lamond said. He will also be looking for improvement from players such as Daniel Butterfield and Mitch Daniel. “These guys have won flags playing reserves footy that are capable of making the next step as well,” Lamond said.

ADELAIDE PLAINS FOOTBALL LEAGUE ADELAIDE PLAINS FOOTBALL LEAGUE Sponso PROGRAMME OF MATCHES - 2013
Plains Producer
2013 Season Preview
Lessons learned from bad break
AFTER sustaining a shocking leg injury in 2012, everyone put a line through the season of Mallala midfielder, Liam Whitwell. Everyone except Liam Whitwell. LES PEARSON reports. THERE would have been few local footy fans who didn’t feel a sense of dismay when gutsy leader, skilful player, committed team man, junior footy mentor and all-round good guy, Liam Whitwell, suffered a serious leg injury last year. June 2, round eight of the 2012 Adelaide Plains Football League season, Whitwell, a two-time Plains Producer medallist, went in hard for the ball - as usual. “I was in a contest on the ground in a northern end pocket,” he recalled. “The ball went over the boundary line, I was lying on my stomach and as I was about to get up someone landed on my heel/ankle and I heard a ‘snap’ and knew that I had broken something. “The pain gave it away as well.” Once carried from the field, Whitwell was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital, where an X-ray confirmed the break. “They then sent me home with a back slab cast on and made an appointment to see a specialist in 12 days,” he said. “At this point I was shattered footy was over for the year. “Monday morning I rang Wakefield Sports Clinic and got an appointment that day. “I saw a specialist and he operated on Wednesday. “I continually asked how long
recovery was going to take they said anywhere from six to 12 weeks plus, so this gave me a little hope that I could possibly get back.” The rehab program included six weeks in a moon boot, two weeks with no weight at all on his leg, then four weeks only being able to put 30 per cent body weight on it. This was then followed by physiotherapy twice a week for the next four to six weeks, with exercises morning and night. “The worst part was getting all the bones in the foot and ankle to move past each other and gain strength in the muscles of the lower leg, so that I could put enough weight on it to allow running to occur,” Whitwell said. “I got the all clear to start jogging eight or nine weeks after the injury and I began training again with about two games to go before finals.” The turn around was nothing short of remarkable, given the severity and complexity of the injury. “Yeah, most thought I was done, and so did I to start with, but my physio was confident of getting back if I did everything right,” Whitwell said. “I didn’t really have to accept my season was over but I just had to try and see how I went. “It was good motivation to do the rehabilitation and do everything right.”
With finals around the corner, rumours were rife around the league of the previously unthinkable: Whitwell returning for the first semi final against Virginia. “I was very close, about a week off,” he said. “It was about doing the best for the team and I wouldn’t have been able to get through more than a half before fatigue in the ankle and leg set in, so we were better off playing a fully fit person, especially in finals. “The right call was made.” As history tells us, Mallala went down to Virginia and bowed out of the finals race. After coming so close to making a Lazarus-like return last year, Whitwell said the leg is feeling good.
“I got through a trial game on March 17 and it was still stiff and sore at times but I’ve been given the all clear. “I have really been looking forward to this year. “Having a long spell off is just a little bit more motivation to get fit and hopefully contribute to us having some success this year.” He had two pieces of sound advice for anyone faced with a similar road to recovery. “Do all the rehab and do it well. If you don’t, the recovery time increases,” Whitwell said.
“Don’t push your body too hard though, or try to come back too early.” n Liam Whitwell coaching the senior colts team.

Plains Producer, Thursday April 4, 2013
SPORT v Football/Netball
Rams fresh, Roosters ready JOSS DenEngelse will lead the Rams A grade side this season.
• From back page It would be remiss not to mention the Rams have a new coach in Joss DenEngelse, who is likely to take on a playing coach’s role. New faces and a new coach could possibly point to a new game style and new results for Virginia. Mind you, there would still be a fair level of familiarity with the Rams, the likes of Matthew Young and Ben Russell leading the midfield, while Adrian Mark sets the standard in defence.
New netball faces • From back page “We are really excited to see how far this team can go. “Last year we finished fourth and if we hadn’t had a couple of injuries late in the season which took out our whole defence end, we think we could have gone even further.” Virginia Sherilee Matheson steps in as coach with a whole new team. They take on Two Wells this weekend. Mallala Courtney Kerr returns to coach Mallala after having a baby, replacing Katie Kreig who has recently moved to Roseworthy. Congratulations to Emma Tiller who is expecting her first baby and so will take the season off. Jess Neilson, who was an APNA top 10 player last year, is now playing for Long Plains. Cousins Stacey Hardy (nee Wilson) and Sally Wilson move up from A2s to fill the gap.
side is still to be confirmed, but Michelle is well aware that the last premiership for Long Plains was in 1982. Hamley Bridge Hamley Bridge’s numbers have dropped, with only four of last year’s premiership side remaining; Amber Rogers, Sarah Koch, Lee Barnett (2013 Plains Producer medallist) and Alison Schahinger. Chelsea Modra has gone back to Freeling, Ashleigh Hornsey (2013 APNA top 10) had a knee operation and will miss the season and Ella Mickan has returned to Kapunda. Paula White joins the team officially, after filling in for Hamley last year. Hamley will be “running bare” for the first few games due to lack of numbers. This should settle part way into the season. Lee Barnett is coaching again.
Whispers from the Rooster camp suggest perennially injured co-captain, Tallan Leighton, is set for a huge year and could be a smoky for the Plains Producer Medal. There’s no doubting his impact while on the field, although staying on there will be his number one battle. Two Wells’ engine room remains largely unchanged from last year, Tallan Leighton, Ben Spiteri and Ned Seccafien all likely to play a large role through the guts this year. They’ll be hard to stop in warmish conditions on Saturday and the younger legs of the Roosters should hold sway. There’s an air of mystery around how Virginia will line up though, which gives the Rams some unpredictability and that can only be a good thing.
Balaklava v Mallala SO much has been said about Mallala’s off-season improvement already and it has the Magpie faithful pretty excited for the big season opener against Balaklava at Ralli Park on Saturday. The return of big forward, Angus Bruggemann, to the Magpies will bolster a forward line fairly reliant on mid-sized goal sneaks last year. He will be a key target inside 50 for Mallala, backed up by Daniel Feeley, Brian Montgomery and Scott Hahn. Mallala’s midfield now nears its strongest, with Liam Whitwell playing his first match since midway through last season, joining Plains Producer Medal winner, Joel Montgomerie, Christian Rimmer, and recruit Dale King. Ben Parish looks to be an exciting pick-up too and could prove more than handy
in a number of areas around the field. Balaklava will likely be featuring several newish faces this weekend. Dean Storic joined the Peckers from Roopena in the off-season, the hard at it midfielder will be plonked right in the centre of the ground along with Todd McPharlin, Justin Michael and Lachy Michael. Storic has a great set of hands, long raking kick and sensational vertical leap, so he will be one to watch. Luke Guy will shoulder much of the workload up forward, while youngsters, Josh Butterfield and Tate Michael, should slip straight into the senior side in their first year out of colts. The Magpies probably go into the season as premiership favourites, along with Two Wells. They’ll be hard for the newlook Peckers to beat.
BROTHERS Braidon (left) and Josh Osborne join Two Wells this year.
LEE Barnett will again coach the Hamley Bridge A1 side.
GAYNOR Tink will return to Balaklava’s A1 side after having her second baby. Balaklava Carolyn Michael steps back into a senior coaching role, after spending time coaching junior grades. “The club is looking strong after gaining quite a few players,” Carolyn said. “It will be interesting to see how we match up against other clubs.” New members include Emily Shepherd,Ashleigh Heinrich, Stacey Mugge and Hailey Watts. Kayla Arbon returns to the club after finishing college and Gaynor Tink is back after having a baby. Long Plains Long Plains has gained the highly qualified Michelle Toherty asA1 coach. Michelle will also continue coaching Tango Juniors inAdelaide and implementing a talent identification program. Michelle made the State squad as a junior and has been involved in the Lower North Netball Academy for the past four years. Interestingly, Michelle started her netball career at Long Plains as a youngster, filling in when visiting family in school holidays. It seems fitting that she now returns to coach and watch her daughters Tori and Briannah. Michelle has put her squad through its paces using “academy style” fitness testing. The final Plains Producer, Thursday April 4, 2013
Hummocks Sam Nicholls continues coaching and is looking forward to hunting this year and not being the hunted! Hummocks were runners-up last year despite leading the score board for most of the season. Tegan Nottle, Sarah Young (2013 Plains Producer medalist), Beth Reid and Bonnie Nicholls (2013 APNA top 10) and Sam (runner-up 2013 Plains Producer medalist), continue on from last year. Mel Moulds and Emily Wandel return after having their first children last year and perhaps would have liked to ease back in at a lower grade but Sam is 100 per cent confident in their abilities at A1 level. Claire Schulz (GK) will play when available and Lisa Powell, Kelli Blakely (WA) & Rochelle Smith will fill in as needed. This weekend’s games are at 3pm, with Balaklava playing Mallala at Balaklava and Two Wells playing Virginia at Two Wells.
SAM Nicholls again takes on the coaching role for Hummocks.
Roosters preparing for back-to-back flags THE 2013 season is looking strong for the Two Wells Football Club. The club has had a pretty good pre-season and there are currently not many injuries. Mark Thomson will once again lead the A Grade side and after last year’s premiership success, will be hoping to make it back-to-back flags. Assistant coach, Neville “Cheeky” Seccafien, will again support him. Coaching the B Grade side for the second year in a row, is Matt Gameau, so we have some consistency across our coaching again this season. The club has two new players to the club – brothers Josh and Braidon Osborne. Braidon comes from Gawler South Football Club and plays along the half forward line, while Josh previously played at the Barossa District Football Club as a midfielder and half forward player.
By Ben Harris, Two Wells Football Club manager Both will be playing senior football this year and the club is keen to see what they bring to the game. Unfortunately for the club, A grade player and best on ground in last year’s grand final, Jarrod Allmond, has returned to the SANFL’s Eagles – the club wishes him all the best there and many successful footy games. Daniel Hines is another who is unable to play this year, due to work commitments. These two players were fairly important in last year’s success so we’ll be looking for other players to step up. Up and coming young player, Dylan Wise, who just missed out on playing in the grand final last year, has been training with SANFL club, Central Districts in the reserves, and will possibly not be available this season.
Once again, A Grade stalwart, Simon Feast, will lead the ruck division and help Ben Slattery and Ben Stubing with their rucking development. Ned Seccafien and Tallan Leighton are the A Grade captains again this year, and we’ll see them lead on the field as they always do. They will be supported in their roles by vice-captains, Kahn Leighton and Ben Spiteri. All the boys are jumping out of their skins to start the season, after playing a successful trial game against Broughton-Mundoora on Saturday March 23. Their first game is against Virginia onApril 6, followed by a bye, and then they will play against Balaklava on April 20. The club looks forward to another successful season, and hopes to see lots of supporters out watching these young guys trying to go back-to-back with anotherA Grade premiership.

‘Our mob’ at gallery
BALAKLAVA Courthouse Gallery is currently showcasing artworks by various South Australian indigenous artists, through OUR MOB, an exhibition which tours throughout SA with Country Arts SA’s Visual Art Program, engaging the public with reconcilliation and intercultural understanding. Driven by the Adelaide Festival Centre, OUR MOB allows SA’s indigenous artists to create visual expressions of the own narratives in a collective display. • Gallery volunteer, Margaret March is pictured with a selection of the artworks. The exhibition continues until Sunday, April 28. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm.
announced at awards ceremonies held annually in seven different regions across SA in October. Advantage SA CEO, Karen Raffen, urged South Australians to support the awards and celebrate the individuals, groups and businesses making significant contributions to regional communities. “Advantage SA is delighted to have PIRSA as major partner and category sponsor for the awards,” Ms Raffen said. Minister for Regional Development, Gail Gago, said the awards were an important way of recognising those who made significant contributions to regional South Australia. “I am proud this government has developed a strong partnership with Advantage SA and PIRSA is the major partner for 2013,” Ms Gago said. “We are introducing a new category – the PIRSA sponsored Premium Food and Wine from our Clean Environment Wine Award.”

SPORT v Bowls
Wooroora Men’s grand final details
It all comes down to this Saturday! • From back page Season form shows Balaklava having had a 14-5 record compared with Port Wakefield’s 13-7 record, with Balaklava having marginally better shots up average, 11.6 as against 6.6 for Port Wakefield. Interestingly though, of their respective wins, Balaklava had five with all rinks up and two with two and a half rinks up, whereas Port Wakefield has had only one win with all rinks up and one with two and a half rinks up. This suggests Balaklava has greater allround depth, whereas Port Wakefield usually has one rink, though not necessarily the same rink, that struggles most weeks. Taking all these factors into account, Balaklava should be favoured to win the Division One premiership and add their name onto the Charles Underwood Memorial Shield. However, Balaklava will remain wary as Port Wakefield has shown that the Balaklava side is beatable. It will all depend on which of the two sides is able to settle quicker on the day, gain that early advantage, and maintain that advantage against a likely fight back by the opposing side. Division One grand final: Balaklava vs Port Wakefield.
Division Two
Can Wakey Blue go back-to-back? As with Division One, the Division Two grand final will feature the top two sides, Port Wakefield Blue and Balaklava Blue.
Of the two sides, Port Wakefield Blue has had an impressive 19½-2½ season while Balaklava Blue’s record was 14½-6½. During the season, Port Wakefield Blue and Balaklava Blue met on three occasions, with Port Wakefield Blue ahead 2-1. Port Wakefield won the first two clashes 70-69 (with only one rink) and 99-51 while Balaklava Blue returned the favour in the second semi final, winning 78-60. Both sides are expected to be at full strength for this return clash. Can Balaklava Blue repeat their second semi final effort against minor premiers, Port Wakefield Blue, and record another upset win in the match that counts? Will Port Wakefield Blue display their season form once again to account for Balaklava Blue or will their side succumb to finals pressure? With greater finals experience and also better season form, the Port Wakefield Blue side will enter the Division Two grand final as favourite to make it two premierships in a row. Division Two grand final: Balaklava Blue vs Port Wakefield Blue.
Division Three
Which side will maintain form? The Division Three grand final will feature second-placed Owen against fourthplaced Riverton White. Owen earned their place in the grand final by defeating minor premier, Port Wakefield
Gold in the second semi final, 74-60 (all rinks up). For Riverton White, their journey to make the grand final started three months ago. After the completion of round 13 on January 5, Riverton White was sitting last of 15 Division Two sides. Since then, the side has had a 7-2 record with losses only to Port Wakefield Gold and Riverton Black. It had to defeat Owen in the last minor round (73-58, one rink up) to sneak into fourth spot, defeat third placed Riverton Black in the first semi final (73-72, one rink up), and defeat minor premier Port Wakefield Gold in the preliminary final (74-62, 1½ rinks up) to make the grand final. During the same time frame, Owen’s form was initially 0-3 but improved significantly in the last five matches, with four wins and only one loss, which was against Riverton White, who they meet in this weekend’s grand final. So, both sides come into the grand final with good form. Can Riverton White’s recent momentum continue or will nerves eventually become a determining factor? Will Owen gain revenge for their recent loss to Riverton White to win the Division Three premiership? The stage is set for an enthralling contest between Owen and Riverton White and whatever the result, a new name will appear on the Division Three Shield. Division Three grand final: Owen vs Riverton White.
Congratulations to all sides competing in the respective grand finals and may the best side in each division win on the day. The grand finals will feature six sides representing four clubs, with Balaklava and Port Wakefield both fielding two sides and Owen and Riverton fielding one side each. Division One: Balaklava vs Port Wakefield
Division Two: Balaklava Blue vs Port Wakefield Blue
Division Three: Owen vs Riverton White
* First name sides are deemed to be the home side.

Landmark’s Brad Wurfel with Farmer’s Day winners: Jean Farley, Tara Baggendorf, Dorothy Eckermann and Elva Zweck.
Ladies win Farmer’s Day Blyth Bowling Club held a successful Farmers Day, sponsored by Landmark Clare, on Friday March 22 with 12 rinks competing during the afternoon’s play. Bowlers had a turn in the “Spider” competition to try to get closest to a 50 cent piece placed in the middle of the green. During the three rounds of bowls, there were plenty of laughs with a number of bowls straying across neighbouring rinks, as well as some surprisingly good bowls finding their way next to the kitty. Co-ordinator of the day, Mike Smith, thanked all for attending,

as well as Landmark for their third year of supporting the event. Golf Balaklava
Alas, those without two-storey air-conditioned “shacks” on Yorke Peninsula were reduced to playing golf locally over the Easter Weekend and we will, of necessity, name the poor sods here below. Some were of A grade skill levels, none more than Merv “Hammies” Hameister, whose Stableford score of 37 spoke volumes for the efficacy of self-administered mendicants, or home brewed stout if you must, as he pulled the yeast over Wayne “Chin Strap” Nagle (34). Wayne in turn called on the good Count Bach to push Peter Thompson back down into 3rd. place. It was left to the following to round out the field: I. Michael (33), R. Hart (31), W. Lokan (31), R. Carney (30), D. Hannaford (30) and C. Michael (24). The B graders were stunned into submission by non-shearing sensation Scott Michael (36), who got the jump on Geoff Leo (35) and his good lady wife Loisue (sic) Michael (28). We were then left with W. Berry (23), R. Hahn (19) and A. Leaver (DNF). The C grade field was dominated by an undaunted display from Digby Addison (38), who got the jump on Joan Anderson (33) and leapt over Malcolm Liptrot’s 32. Then came D. Trickett (30), M. Keast (27), K. Kelly (23) and with patrician head held high, a truly dignified G. Anderson (18). Mighty Merv and diligent Digby shared a Birdie at the eighth, while Merv held a Nearest The Pin for his second shot into the 13th, leav-
ing Dean Trickett to claim his at the third, Loisue (sic) Michael at the eighth and Ian Michael the 10th. Golfer of the Summer points were given to Digby Addison (6), Merv Hameister (5), Scott Michael (4), Geoff Leo (3), Wayne Nagle (2) and the remaining muppets, one each. This Saturday is our Winter Opening twoperson Ambrose, complete with shootgun (sic) start and the chance to snag the highly desired and nutritious Nyowee Trophy. The Committee will organise the “Off” with incredible professionalism, while in similar style, man-mountain Mark Loy will dispense wisdom and liquid refreshments at the 19th. Dinner will be served thereafter so as usual, we ask that the men bring supberbly hand-crafted salads and the women oodles of ridiculously sumptuous serves of sweets. As well, our new 2013 programs are now available from the captain’s office.

Test and evaluation activities involving static firings and/or firings of naval and artillery weapons are conducted at the Proof and Experimental Establishment Port Wakefield throughout the year. The Proof and Experimental Establishment Port Wakefield is a vital Defence test and evaluation capability that has supported Defence since 1929. These firings may require specific tidal or weather conditions, and are critical for the safety of current and new Defence capabilities. Members of the public may notice noise, vibration, flashes and/or smoke during the testing. There is no risk to the public outside of the gazetted Defence Practice Areas. For reasons of public safety, there is a permanent exclusion zone covering land, sea and air around the Port Wakefield Establishment. Specific details on the Port Wakefield Prohibited Area can be obtained from Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No GN 26, 4 July 1990, and is shown on the diagram below. Trespassing in this Area is strictly prohibited and very dangerous due to the presence of unexploded bombs. Any person found within the Prohibited Area or on Defence land will be subject to prosecution. Rams are chasing redemption
REBECCA Pym remains from Two Wells’ 2012 A1 side.
Les Pearson previews round 1 APFL matches Two Wells v Virginia ROUND one always presents a chance for redemption for the team vanquished in last year’s grand final and that is exactly what Virginia would be after on Saturday when the team ventures to Two Wells. The Roosters once again look a strong unit on paper and if preseason form is anything to go by, they would go into this match extremely confident of backing up from 2012. Reports suggest forward, Andrew Hardiman, has shown excellent progress on the track in the off-season, which sends alarm bells ringing for the competition’s defenders, given he was one of the hardest working forwards in the league last year. Virginia actually knocked off Two Wells in their first encounter last season and some new faces in Rams’ guernseys will be watched carefully by the Roosters’ coaching panel. n Continued page 23
Fresh legs, new possibilities This year’s season promises to bring fresh possibilities with new players and coaches across the Adelaide Plains Netball Association. Two Wells The Two Wells A1 side is fairly new, with only three players from last year’s team; Nikki Darling, Rebecca Pym and Karen Penhall (2013 APNA top 10). Remaining positions are filled by new player Phoebe Schmidt, and A2 players Sharnie Kent, Rhiannon Wendland and Stephanie Agnello.

Neralie Wearn and Stacey Gameau are expecting babies in the coming months, although Stacey will continue to coach. Mia Darling will miss the season, still recovering from last year’s knee injury. Coach Stacey is psyched for her team’s potential this year. n Continued page 23
Who will claim victory?
The Wooroora Men’s Bowls grand finals for 2012-2013 will bring to a close another interesting season. Bowlers and spectators will converge on Riverton Bowling Club this Saturday, for what should be an enthralling day of bowls. New premiership winners are guaranteed in two of the three divisions, with a possibility that the same may occur in the remaining division.
The top two sides, Balaklava and Port Wakefield, will contest the 2012-2013 Division One grand final. Over the past decade, Hamley Bridge has held up the Division One Charles Underwood Memorial Shield nine times, including the last eight in a row. However, due to a major player restructure within the club during the

WMBA grand final preview off-season, Hamley Bridge did not make the finals this season. So, a different name will appear on the Charles Underwood Memorial Shield at the conclusion
of this season’s grand final. Will it be Balaklava, which last won the premiership in 2003-2004, or will it be Port Wakefield, whose name last appeared on the shield in 1996-1997?
How have Balaklava and Port Wakefield fared against each other during this season? The two sides met four times with the honours split two each. Port Wakefield won the first two encounters 76-63 and 8661, while Balaklava won 81-55 in round 20 as well as the second semi-final, 83-55. n Continued page 24
