SUPERINTENDENT’S VIEWPOINT by Susan Wakefield, Superintendent

Another Great Year Ahead

P

lainwell Schools had an awesome year in 2012-2013 with many outstanding accomplishments by our students at every level. And we anticipate another year as good as the last. The energy is starting to build in the office with the now daily arrival of a parent looking to enroll a child. Yesterday, I met a mother and rather reluctant soon-to-be Kindergarten student who informed me that she wasn’t coming. I assured her that once she tried it, she would really like it. I feel that way about every grade and building in this district. Each offers kids a warm and wonderful setting in which to learn and grow. One of the most important assets that we equip children with a positive attitude and that holds true as they prepare for a new school year. If students begin the school

year with enthusiasm and confidence, they are better prepared for the challenges they will have during the year. Talk with them about what they think the new year will hold, encourage them to be open to new friends, classes and teachers, and assure them that all the adults, including you, are here to help them succeed. This issue is full of valuable information for the start of a new year – dates, times, and schedules. There is also our new website that can assist you as you help your child prepare for another exciting year. We look forward to seeing everyone is few weeks. We are going to have a great year! n

FOCUS ON CURRICULUM by Bob VanDis, Director of Curriculum

Secondary Schools Focus on Success for All Students

A

ll of our schools show excellent overall achievement as measured by state and national standardized tests. This achievement is measured, and schools are compared by, the percent of students who meet the standards, that is, the percent of students who pass the test. While a high passing rate is an indicator of our excellent schools and a point of pride for our community, that number can mask the fact that we still have low performing students who are not meeting standards or being successful in school. In the past two years, our high school and middle school have implemented several initiatives that target our lower achieving students and give them the extra help and instruction they need to be successful. For example, our high school hired Nick Marshall as our Graduation and Retention Specialist. Nick’s job is to track all students whose grades have slipped or who are failing classes and work with them and their teachers on a plan to get them back on the track to success. Another initiative is a new class Reading For Success, a required extra reading class for freshman who enter high school

significantly behind in reading. Other initiatives are the Positive Psychology class, Endeavors course for credit recovery, and after school homework and remediation time. Several new initiatives will be put in place this year at the high school to target lower achieving students. Those include the Superintendent’s Drop Out

just one year “ofAfter Capturing Kids’ Hearts, the middle school reduced office referrals by 23% and truancy by 41%!

Challenge; an enhanced, mandatory after school homework and tutoring time; and additional training for teachers in Quantum Learning and Mindset, both proven methods for increasing the achievement and motivation of all students - but they are particularly effective with struggling students. The middle school will be also be participating in Quantum Learning as a method

for enhancing student achievement. Their efforts last year to reach low achieving students included implementing strategies to increase student engagement: Mindset, and Capturing Kids’ Hearts. After just one year of Capturing Kids’ Hearts, the middle school reduced office referrals by 23% and truancy by 41%! Also implemented last year was READ 180, an extra reading class for students below grade level, and a Student Support Specialist who worked with students who needed support in improving behavior or academics. New initiatives this year at the middle school include MATH 180, improving home/ school communication, teacher mentors for struggling students, and increasing after school support by staff. Our high school and middle school are very successful schools with excellent teachers and administrators. It is a testament to their commitment and excellence that rather than be satisfied that “most” of their students do well, they are taking on the difficult challenge and extra work needed to ensure that ALL of their students succeed. n

FOCUS ON TECHNOLOGY by Jeff McNutt, Director of Technology

IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION…

iPad Rollout Information

P

lainwell Community Schools is embarking on another technologically exciting year with the return of iPad instruction for the Class of 2016 and an introduction of the one-to-one initiative for the Class of 2017. This program continues to impact how our students learn and interact with teachers and peers. The iPads will be used in classes as textbooks, research and communication tools, and for completing assignments and projects. The provided software applications and textbooks will allow students to access these materials even when they do not have access to an internet connection. Plainwell Middle School students will also have opportunity to work with ChromeBooks this fall in their Social Studies classes. Middle School math classes are already equipped with sets of 30 iPads giving every student the chance to work with those devices. Middle School Science benefits from carts of netbooks.

The Plainwell High School Athletic Department and the Plainwell Boosters will be hosting the annual

FALL SPORTS

PARENTS NIGHT WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21 @ 6 p.m. in the high school gym Booster apparel and PHS all sport passes will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m. General meeting at 6:00 p.m. Individual sports meetings will follow. Football • Volleyball • Girls Swim & Dive Boys Tennis • Cheerleading • Girls Golf Cross Country • Boys Soccer

The one-to-one iPad initiative is an outgrowth of the district’s Dynamic Plan adopted by the Board of Education in February 2012. The Instructional Technology goal emphasizes the need to put technology in everyone’s hands, to extend learning opportunities outside of the regular school day, and to develop the 21st century skills our students will use in college and career. This goal aligns with the state and federal educational technology goals of anywhere, anytime learning. The rollout of iPads for freshmen will happen Tuesday, August 22 at Freshmen Orientation. There will be a mandatory meeting for parents on Tuesday, August 20 at 6:00 p.m. (see page 7 for more information). A $50 refundable deposit will be required. An informational packet has already been sent home to parents. For more information, check out the High School page on our website, www.plainwellschools.org The iPads will be a wonderful addition to the educational opportunities available to students at Plainwell Community Schools. It’s going to be another great year! n

A Note from the new Plainwell Middle School Assistant Principal

TASIA STAMOS

H

ello! I am thrilled to be the new assistant principal at Plainwell Middle School. I attended college at Western Michigan University and earned a masters degree in Educational Leadership. I have been a fifth grade teacher at Starr Elementary for 13 years. During my time at Starr, I was honored to have been a part of a fabulous caring staff. In addition, I have served on many district committees and I have been the fifth grade Grade Level Chair. I live in Portage with my husband, Steve, and our dog, Rocky. My daughter, Julie, is a Michigan State graduate and lives in New York City. My son, Peter, graduated from Elmhurst College and just returned to the United States after playing football in Europe! I love being a part of the Plainwell School Community where educational excellence is a priority. I am excited about working collaboratively with the staff, students, and families at the middle school so all students can be academically and socially successful. The middle school staff has warmly welcomed me and I am looking forward to the start of the school year and this new adventure!. n W W W. P L A I N W E L L S C H O O L S . O R G

ADVISORY TO ALL PARENTS Dear Parents/Guardian: Plainwell Community Schools has adopted an Integrated Pest Management program. Inherent with this are the District’s efforts to reduce pesticide use as much as possible. While it may occasionally be necessary to apply a pesticide, these will only be used as a last resort. This program does not rely on routine pesticide applications to resolve problems. We use various techniques such as habitat alteration, sanitation, mechanical means, exclusion, etc. to prevent pests from becoming a problem. You will receive advanced notice of the application of a pesticide, other than bait or gel formulations at your child’s school. This advance notice of the application will be given 48 hours before the application. The law requires us to do this notification by using two methods. The first method required by law is the posting at the primary entrances to your child’s school. The entrances that will be posted are those entrances that have a sidewalk that leads directly to a parking lot. The second method we are going to use is the posting in a common area located by the main office of the school. Parents are also entitled to receive this notice by first-class United States mail postmarked at least 3 days before the application. If you would like to be notified by mail please contact the Operations Department at 269-685-6338. Please give the Operations secretary your name, mailing address and what school your child attends. In an emergency (for example, bees nest), pesticides may be applied without prior notice, but you will be provided notice following any such application. You may review our IPM program or pesticide application records for your child’s school by calling 269-685-6338 or emailing Greg Smith, at gsmith@plainwellschools.org. This number or email may also be used when school is not in regular session. Sincerely, Greg Smith, Director of Operations

SAFE & DRUG FREE SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES Plainwell Community Schools recognizes and abides by the standards of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug Free Workplace Act. These standards prohibit the unlawful manufacture, possession, use, sale, distribution, or concealment of illegal drugs and alcohol in school programs, school vehicles, school premises, and at school sponsored activities on and off school property. Drugs include all controlled substances as defined by law, as well as “look-alike” drugs, steroids, and alcohol. These standards apply to all Plainwell Community Schools’ students and staff. The use/abuse of drugs and alcohol poses serious health and safety risks to Plainwell Community Schools’ students. We urge students, parents, guardians, and care providers to work hand-in-hand with our district to ensure that these important standards are upheld. STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE WITH FEDERAL LAW The Plainwell Community School district complies with applicable federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination, including Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It is the policy of the school district that no person on the basis of religion, race, color, national origin or ancestry, age, height, weight, gender, marital status, handicap or Vietnam-era veteran status, shall be discriminated against in employment or educational programs and activities. Giving Thanks

s our summer Recreation Programs wind down, I would like to express my appreciation to the many wonderful people who make our programs possible. Our summer baseball, softball, and T-ball program is fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful community of volunteers. Our coaches, assistant coaches, umpires, supervisors, maintenance department, local business sponsors, and many others make our summer programs what they are. So, on behalf of the Community Recreation Department and myself, a BIG THANK YOU! While I am on the subject of volunteers, it is important to remember that all of our Recreation programs are made possible by volunteers. As previously mentioned, there are many opportunities to be involved. High school or college students looking for community service or adults that want to be involved with their children are always welcome. All interested volunteers are required to complete a background check. This is a simple procedure that requires only a short form to be filled out and returned. So, if you are looking to get involved, please contact me. I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you. In closing, I would like to recognize our local businesses that sponsored our summer teams. Also, thanks to photographer Becky Howrigon for taking the team pictures and to Midwest Custom Embroidery for providing our uniform needs. Please remember to visit their place of business and thank them personally for their contributions. Our sponsors include: ADD.Vantage Storage, Hart’s Jewelry, House Calls Repair and Remodeling, Meert Farms, Meert/Gauthier Concrete, Plainwell Ice Cream, Steve Henderson & Son Construction, TMD Machining. THANKS SPONSORS! n
