“I feel extremely fortunate to live, work and play here in Galloway. Galloway has many changing faces and such an array of contrasting landscapes – there are no limits to Galloway, the only dilemma one has is which aspect of our wonderful region would you like to investigate and explore. To me Galloway has it all!”

One of the most inspirational landscapes of the region is the Galloway Forest Park – 300 sq miles of lush green forest, heather-clad hills and tranquil valleys that are home to an amazing variety of wildlife. The park is also one of the greatest spots in the UK to do some stargazing with the naked eye, as it is the first Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only three in Europe, where you can see the amazing sight of 7,000 twinkling stars without a telescope. The park is also home to two of the internationally renowned 7stanes mountain biking centres, Glentrool and Kirroughtree. A selection of both exhilarating and more peaceful activities is on offer in the beautiful countryside. Enjoy an adrenaline rush or a more
gentle family ride at one of the excellent 7stanes mountain biking centres or try the cycle paths which provide more gentle exercise around the area. On the water try sailing, waterskiing or wakeboarding or simply choose to sit by the river banks and indulge in a spot of fishing. Golfers can enjoy a variety of over 30 parkland and links courses, offering challenges for the accomplisher golfer and family fun for beginners, with some of the most breathtaking views in the region. Dumfries & Galloway is a great place to learn more about some of the major moments in Scottish history. From the battles of Robert the Bruce to the invention of the first pedal bike there is simply so much to discover. Visit the
home, farm and favourite inn of the country’s most famous poet, Robert Burns, whose most memorable work was written here during his last years. As well as offering inspirational landscapes, the countryside also provides a selection of delicious food and drink to enjoy, including quality beef, lamb and cheese, which the local restaurants use to great effect.

A sense of history, an air of creativity With connections to the beginning of Scottish Christianity, famous poet Robert Burns and a whole town dedicated to local artists, Dumfries & Galloway demonstrates its significance in history and creativity wherever you go. Uncover the historic tales of how this region played a big part in the story of Scotland. See the work of artists such as the Glasgow Boys or step inside some of the fascinating heritage sites to hear the history of figures including Robert the Bruce and Lady Devorgilla. With so much to inspire, from a colourful history to stunning landscapes, it’s not surprising to learn that Dumfries & Galloway has been and is still home to so many artists and craftsmen. Take the opportunity to find out more during 2012 – the Year of Creative Scotland. Immerse yourself in a world of creativity in the Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright, a pretty harbour town and a wellknown haven for artists. These days it boasts many galleries, workshops, studios and special events including summer exhibitions, festivals and community days. The historic town of Dumfries has a long and varied history with many renowned characters, most notably Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns. During the last years of his life he produced work which is still heard, read and discussed across the world. Visit the various museums and centres, including his former house, which now serves as a dedicated museum where you can see the desk and chair where he sat to write 200 years ago.
Another famous figure is Robert the Bruce – it was in Dumfries that he became King of Scotland after murdering John Comyn, his chief rival for the throne in the town’s Greyfriars monastery in 1306. You can visit the sites of his first victories in battle at Glentrool and Raploch Moss and see the cave near Kirkpatrick Fleming where legend says that in 1307 after defeat, he went into hiding for three months and was inspired back into battle by a spider’s relentless effort to spin its web. Over in the west of the region is the small town of Whithorn where you’ll find many connections with the beginning of Christianity in Scotland. Bishop and missionary St Ninian is believed to have trained in Rome before returning here and founding the first Christian church in Whithorn in the fifth century. Find out all about the saint by heading to St Ninian’s Chapel on the coast near Isle of Whithorn and in Whithorn Priory Museum, which houses a collection of ancient stones explaining the tale. The region also boasts a number of fascinating heritage sites which are worth a visit. From the unique triangular castle of Caerlaverock to the isolated and peaceful Glenluce Abbey, you’ll find magic, history and intriguing tales everywhere.
“The Whithorn area is a treasure trove of clues of the past; cup and ring stones, stone circles, standing stones, chapels and Iron Age forts dot the unspoilt landscape. The once bustling medieval settlements are now quiet, rural idylls. The pace of life is slower here; you can find the time to relax and explore, never far from clues left by others who were here before.” Janet Butterworth, Project Manager, The Whithorn Trust

Scotland’s Star Quality!
- A simple, impartial, consistent approach to quality
VisitScotland, under the Scottish Tourist Board brand, runs the star grading schemes which assess the quality standards of all types of accommodation and visitor attractions from castles and historic houses to garden centres and arts venues. We quality assure over 70 percent of the accommodation in Scotland and 90 percent of the visitor attractions – so wherever you want to stay or visit, we’ve got it covered. Each establishment is reviewed once a year. We do the hard work so you can relax and enjoy your holiday. How does the system work?
Graded visitor attractions
A consistent standard wherever you stay
Visitor attractions from tourist shops and museums to leisure centres and tours are graded with 1 - 5 stars depending on their level of customer care. The focus is on the standard of hospitality and service as well as presentation, quality of shop or cafĂŠ (if there is one) and toilet facilities.
The promise of the stars:
Â?
it is clean, tidy and an acceptable standard
Â?Â? Â?Â?Â?
it is a good, all round standard
Â?Â?Â?Â?
it is excellent – furnished using high quality materials, superb food where provided and friendly, professional service
it is a very good standard, with attention to detail in every area
Our advisors visit and assess establishments on up to 50 areas from quality, comfort and cleanliness to welcome, ambience and service. The same star scheme runs in England and Wales, so you can follow the stars wherever you go.
Â?Â?Â?Â?Â? an exceptional standard where
It should be noted that those establishments that fail to meet our minimum standards will not be awarded a star rating.
Establishments awarded gold stars have consistently achieved the highest levels of excellence within their star grading.
presentation, ambience, food where provided and service are hard to fault
We grade all types of accommodation from hostels, through to B&Bs and self catering properties to hotels grand and small. We even grade campus accommodation and parks offering holiday homes and camping. So whether you prefer to spend the night under canvas or the canopy of a four-poster bed, we’ll make sure you know the standard to expect.

New Holiday Parks scheme
VisitScotland has developed Welcome Schemes to complement the Star Quality Assurance grades. These schemes tell you about establishments which pay particular attention to the specific needs of these visitors. As well as the established Walkers Welcome ' and Cyclists Welcome & schemes, there are similar schemes for: Anglers
Bikers
This year VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance scheme. The star awards now better reflect the aspects which impact on your enjoyment of your Scottish park holiday, the things that you told us are important to you. This has resulted in changes to the level of awards given to some parks but you can still be assured of the same high level of customer service and all the facilities you’ve become accustomed to.

If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately.
The majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés are smoke-free by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, guest houses and B&Bs are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so. To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directly when booking. For further information, visit www.clearingtheairscotland.com
Insurance and cancellation Should you have to cancel for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you can be insured against any compensation claim. Please ensure you take out cancellation insurance prior to your trip.

VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance Scheme
You told us you wanted our star awards to reect the aspects which impact on your enjoyment of your Scottish park holiday, so we listened and now focus on the things that you told us are important to you. This has resulted in changes to the level of awards given to some parks but you can still be assured of the same high level of customer service and all the facilities you’ve become accustomed to from Scottish Holiday Parks.
