The Observant Life Course Summary Rabbi Benjamin Sendrow May 8, 2013

What is The Observant Life? It is the most important book ever published by the Conservative Movement for its membership. A Guide to Jewish Religious Practice by Rabbi Isaac Klein has long been the go-to book for Conservative rabbis, but it was not written for, nor is it likely to be of interest to a lay reader. One might say The Observant Life is a much younger sibling to what Conservative rabbis simply call “Klein.” For a much more detailed explanation, the review beginning on page 2 was written by JTS professor, Dr. Neil Gillman.

Description of the Course Unlike courses in which the leader picks out passages for inclusion, we will read The Observant Life from cover to cover. Because the book’s structure is based on the Biblical verse Micah 6:8 (“You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do justice And to love goodness, And to walk humbly with your God.”), the first session of the course will be on the prophet Micah and the book that bears his name. It is my intent to limit the study of Micah to one session; if that proves too difficult than an absolute maximum of two sessions will be devoted to Micah. This will not require much preparation on the part of the participants, and so will provide and opportunity for those who have not already begun to read The Observant Life to begin reading. Requirements of the Participants This is another aspect of the course unlike most Adult Education courses — I will not be teaching the class what the book says. We have intelligent members who will have come to class having read the topic(s) for the evening. We will actively discuss the book and our reactions to it. It will be a participatory class, not one designed for a passive listening audience. If poor eyesight makes doing such reading difficult for someone but s/he wants to sit in and primarily listen, that would be fine. Other than that, we want active participants.

Options for the Book Amazon sells the book for about $32.00 for a hard copy, or $13.00 for the Kindle edition. One does not have to buy a Kindle to used the Kindle edition. There are free copies of Kindle reading software available for almost all computers and mobile devices.
