Overthepastyear,wehavebeeninvolvedinarangeofprojectsandinitiativesthathave allowedustodeepenourcommitmenttoresponsibletourismandtheempowermentoflocal communities.OurcollaborationwiththeInternationalUnionforConservationofNature(IUCN) andtheIberostarGrouphashelpedustopromotesustainablepracticesinthetourism industryandtoprotectthenaturalandculturalheritageoftheregionswhereweoperate.

WhilecommunitiescontinuedtostrugglewiththeimpactsofCOVID-19,weremaincommitted tosupportingourcommunitytourismenterprisepartnersandhelpingthemrecoverand rebuild.Thankstothegenerouscontributionsofoursupporters,thePlaneterraWishListwas abletoraisefundstosupporttherecoveryofseveralpartnerswhowerestillstrugglingto overcomethechallengesofthepandemic.

WealsolaunchedtheGlobalCommunityTourismFundtofosterentrepreneurshipand innovationforcommunitytourismenterprisesworldwide. Throughthisfund,Planeterra providessmallgrants,aswellascommunity-specifictrainingandmentorshiptohelplocal entrepreneursandcommunitiesscaleupandimproveexistingexperiences.

HotelconCorazónisasocialimpacthotel forconscioustravellers Theyinvesttheir profitsineducationbecausetheybelieveit isthekeytoabetterfuture.Hotelcon Corazónprovidesscholarshipsand motivationalprogramstoyoungadultsinthe region.Theysupportthelocaleconomyby hiringstafffromtheregionandbuyingtheir productslocally.HotelconCorazónalso organizesimpacttoursandsellslocal handicraftsintheiron-siteshop.

IndigenousKokodaAdventuresisan Indigenous-ownedand-ledtouroperatorthat offersachallengingtrekalongtheKokoda TrailinPapuaNewGuineaandsupportsthe communitiesintheareabyprovidingbetter employmentopportunitiesfortheirporters andguides Theybelievebysupportinglocal initiatives,everyonebenefits,that’swhythey alsoestablishedafoundationtoassistwith thepost-primaryeducationoflocalchildren.

InMarch2022,PlaneterralaunchedtheGlobalCommunityTourism Fund,agrantprogramthatsupportsthegrowthofcommunity tourismenterpriseswithintheGCTN TheGlobalCommunity TourismFundprovidessmallflexiblegrantsandmentorshiptolocal enterpriseslookingtocreateabiggerimpactthroughnewor improvedtourismexperiences Inthisinauguralyear,theprogram supportedinitiativessuchasinfrastructureupgrades,equipment purchases,marketing,trainingandmore.

Acommunity-ownedandledorganizationthatoffers homestaysintheLakeTiticacaarea.Withthereturnof tourism,localfamilieswererequiredtoimprovetheir offertoguaranteehealthandsecurityfortravelers.

Theyusedthefundtoprovidewaterfilterstotheir pipedwatersystemfor15indigenoushouseholds, whichallowsaccesstocleanerandpotablewater. Localfamilieshavealsoreceivedtrainingonhowto useandmaintainthesefilters

SevencommunitiesinManabíarepartoftheJipijapa Wankavilkacommunitytourismnetwork.Despitehaving theinfrastructureandtouristattractions,COVID-19 preventedlocalenterprisesfromflourishing.Lackof accesstotheInternetisalsooneoftheissuesRTCJW faced.

Toovercomethesebarriers,theyworkedona marketingplan,whichincludedaudiovisual,promotional materialsandresources,anupdatedwebsite,and trainingforlocalleaders.

Planeterraworkedonajointprojectwiththe InternationalUnionforConservationofNature (IUCN)toleadcommunitytourismtrainingand supportCOVID-19recoveryinPeruand Vietnam.

Theproject‘SustainableTourismand ProtectedAreasinaPost-COVIDWorld’ fundedbytheDeutscheGesellschaftfür InternationaleZusammenarbeit(GIZ)GmbH, aimedtobridgethegapcreatedbythe pandemicontourismanddevelopamore crisis-resilientandsustainablelandscapein andaroundprotectedandconservedareas. Thefocuswasalsoonimprovingthe ecologicalandsocialaspectsoftourismand rebuildingbetterforpeople,wildlife,and ecosystems.

Toachievethis,IUCNandPlaneterraworked withthecommunitiesintheRíoAbiseo NationalParkandAmarakaeriCommunal ReserveinPeru,andtheCucPhuongNational ParkandVanLongNatureReserveinVietnam. Together,wesupportedthedevelopmentof communitytourismenterprisestocreatemore opportunitiesforlocalcommunitiestorecover fromthenegativeimpactsofCOVID-19 In doingso,wealsofocusedonpromoting resiliencebyimprovingbusinessskillsand knowledge,andhighlightingtheimportanceof connectingcommunitywell-beingwith effectiveprotectedareamanagement.

andaroundtheAmarakaeriCommunalReserve (Queros,Shintuya,PuertoAzulMberoweand BocaIshiriwe)andtheRíoAbiseoNationalPark (SanJuandelAbiseo,Pizarro,Pucallpillo,Santa RosaandDosdeMayo).
