CONTENTS Hello,

Readers!

Winter is well underway in the Midwest, but we Midwesterners don’t mind one bit -- we haven’t made home in this inhospitable clime because our cans are made of candy, after all. This is the time of year when we engage ourselves by tearing around through

4

the snow on cross-country skis and snowmobiles, terrorizing fish who were lulled into a false sense of security by the thick sheet of ice they had thought protected them from our baited hooks, and cursing through our teeth as we desperately try to rake that one inaccessible part of the roof where the ice always dams. Who says the Midwest isn’t a font of fun in the wintertime? Too much fun in the outdoors this time of year can be wearisome, however, which is why this issue of

Bismarck’s automotive transponder key fob headquarters! “Some lines of work haven’t changed in years,” said Ken Hoff, the proprietor of Warren's Locks & Keys. “Not to say that the guy changing oil at a garage has an easy job, but he’s still reaching for the same half inch wrench that he did on the day when he first started out. The locksmithing business doesn’t give you that luxury. If you keep using the same technology and equipment that you did even a few years ago -- if you fall behind one gear -- you’re going to find yourself out of luck pretty quickly.” Ken’s industry has been marked by relentless innovation since he started out in 1993, but it was not only by constantly investing in the most cutting edge equipment, and regularly attending classes on his trade, that he made Warren's Locks & Keys the Bismarck area’s premier locksmithing business. Ken also owes his success to a rather old-fashioned concept: a job well done. “I always put quality over quantity,” Ken continued. “Great workmanship is everything to me. I would never do a job that I can’t take pride in, even if it means taking fewer service calls than I’m able to. Doing 100 jobs a day sounds like a great way to make money, but if you dig a little deeper you’ll realize you’re never going to get repeat business that way. My customers count on me because they know I’m going to take my time and do the job right, and always on the first time.”

S P OT L I G HT One newer aspect of locksmithing that Ken has done particularly well at keeping up with is the transponder car key, the little remote that locks and unlocks your car from a distance. (It never gets less satisfying, hearing the little beep as you’re walking toward your car with your groceries.) Indeed, Ken has made Warren's Locks & Keys into Bismarck’s very own automotive transponder key fob headquarters. “One big advantage of having specialized in our line of work for so long is that we’ve figured out how to give our customers the absolute best value that the lock and key business has to offer,” explained Ken. “Our transponder key fob service is a perfect example of that. Because we’ve established a good buying relationship with the people who make the devices, learned to code them so efficiently, and worked with practically every make and model vehicle you could find in North Dakota, we’re confident that we can produce a transponder key fob for the lowest price the job can be done for.

“I offer a lot of other high tech products like safes and keyless door locks, but some facets of home security can’t be improved on, like the deadbolt. At the end of the day, everything I do comes together so I can offer my customers a complete approach to home security. Unfortunately, I’ve found that a lot of people are reactive instead of proactive; They only invest in the home security they should have gotten before a break-in happened. Crime is inevitable, and while you can’t stop it, you can prevent it. Home security has always been a passion of mine, and it’s been my honor to have helped so many people in our community protect whatever is most important to them. “You might think that any line of work would get stale after a while, but that’s never the case with locksmithing. The sheer variety of the technology I get to work with, the challenge of mastering every new kind of lock that hits the market, it keeps everything fresh and enjoyable. I’m looking forward to another 25 years in this business -- who knows what locksmithing’s going to come up with by then?” Warren's Locks & Keys is located at 920 E Front Ave in downtown Bismarck. You can learn more about the services they offer by calling (701) 223-0938 or visiting warrenslocks.com.

Naturally, becoming airborne takes a lot of skill, at least if you’d like to do so intentionally. That’s why Huff Hills’ friendly and capable instructors are standing by to teach people the ropes, whether they’ve never taken to skis or a snowboard before or would simply like to hone their already considerable skills. Kids so enjoy the affable instructors’ guidance that they’ll often be unaware they’re meant to be learning at all, becoming adept at traversing the slopes while laughing the whole time.

Aside from experience, a novice might lack equipment, but Huff Hills provides that as well. The rental shop at the base area offers ski and snowboard rentals, as well as helmets which you’re dearly advised to take advantage of. The base area lodge also has hot food, a big fireplace by the window, and a selection of beers including local microbrews, just the thing to cap off a great day of skiing or simply punctuate one. Its base area makes Huff Hills a particularly family friendly destination, because no matter which lift or trail you take, gravity dictates you’ll wind up right back there. This means that mom may restore herself by the fire with the aid of hot chocolate, dad may venture into the woods in search of impressively hard skiing, the kids can go check out the terrain park, and everyone will end up back at the same place at the end of the day. Whether you’re planning a big ski trip to Vail, Red Lodge Mountain, or Jackson Hole and would like to make certain beforehand that your legs are ready and equipment is dialed in, or you’d just like a fine ski trip in its own right, Huff Hills awaits. It’s incredibly nearby at only 16 miles from downtown Mandan, so you don’t even have to wake up early to enjoy a full day there. Visit huffhills.com to learn more about the best local skiing around!

Murder

Mysteries by David Scheller

Solving a murder mystery in real life is no fun at all. You’ve got to investigate the crime scene, gather clues, interview witnesses, weigh motives, get a warrant, and finally make an arrest. You’re tripped up all along the way by annoying obstacles like habeas corpus, the Fifth Amendment, and relentless dockside shootouts and high-speed car chases through farmers’ markets. On top of all that, even the most meticulous detective risks having all their work undone during trial by some hotshot lawyer in a sharkskin suit. Don’t you wish you could be involved in a murder mystery without the hard work, danger, and, above all, actual murder? That’s exactly the pleasure which Jest Murder Mysteries provides, all the satisfying accusatory finger wagging without having to replace the carpet afterward. If Sherlock Holmes had Jest Murder Mysteries, he’d have stuck to playing violin. Jest was founded by writer, actor, and director Randy Manning in St. Louis back in 1999. He had cut his teeth on some other murder mystery shows, learned what gelled and what didn’t in such a specialized production, and decided he could put on the ultimate one. So he did, and his specialized troops are now based in 15 cities and travel the country to put on dinner shows. Randy’s daughter, Leslie Franklin, has just taken over Jest and continues its whimsical business as Randy envisioned it. Jest works like this: You pick the venue (which Jest will recommend, if you like), arrange dinner, and invite your guests. Then you pick which show you’d like, be it Bullets in the Bathtub, a mobster and flapper speakeasy romp, Death of Blackheart, a pirate hostage fantasy, or any one of their other themed productions. Jest will then ship out the actors needed to turn what otherwise might have been just another perfunctory feedbag affair into an interactive theater experience which your guests will remember for the rest of their lives, far more so than anything else accompanied by green beans with slivered almonds that they’ve experienced before. Be certain, these aren’t the kind of murder mysteries which Agent Starling and Doctor Lecter would tackle together. They’re funny, improv-driven spectacles carried out by experienced stage actors. Jest’s performers include the alumni of plays and shows including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hairspray, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Monk. They adopt characters like Squint Leastwood,

shopdinelive.net Fanny Dango, and The Crawdad Hunter, mill around with the dinner guests (who may adopt their own aliases, if they choose), and set the stage by the first course. Everything goes nicely, with Bobby Bologna regaling your guests about all the late night deposits he has made in the East River, until dinner comes, and then BAM! Suddenly there’s a stiff, and it could be anyone’s doing. The actors and your guests set out impromptu theories about who dunnit, and then after dessert the climactic accusations are thrown. The culprit gets a trophy at the end rather

than 30 to 50 years with good behavior. Jest’s shows’ spontaneity makes them different every time, because the audience’s involvement is as crucial as the performers’. “One of our great strengths is how well our actors read their audience,” explained Leslie. “If grandma wants to sit back and watch things unfold, they don’t coax her into it. They simply give her a great show instead. But if they see someone eager to ham it up alongside them, then they identify the show’s greatest asset right then and there.” Jest Murder Mysteries is a spicy way to make any dinner great. Up until recently the only ways you could experience escaping from a room were by playing video games or going to prison. Video games are by the far more preferable of the two -- I’ll take tapping buttons in the comfort of my living room over two decades of carving a tunnel through solid concrete using nothing but a soup spoon any time. The explosive popularity of escape rooms, however, has opened up a entirely new avenue to enjoy such a challenge. In them, you are locked in a room themed after some intriguing scenario and given only a single instruction: leave. With just an hour to accomplish that mission you must frantically observe your surroundings, paw around for clues and items that you can use to manipulate the environment, and, with nothing but your profound insight and the barking input of your friends,

When I went, I leafed through every book I found like it may have contained the secret to immortality, felt buzzes of wonder every time a once locked drawer or cabinet finally popped open, and stood in awe when I caused a wall to swing out and reveal a second, bigger, and even more cryptic room. Travis and Becki Walterson have provided this thrill at Trapped in Bismarck since they opened in 2015. “Winters in Bismarck are long and harsh,” said Becki. “We give locals something

gotten have been astounding -- lots of ‘Oh my god!’ and ‘That was amazing!’ It’s the kind of attraction that people talk about for hours afterward, breaking down what they figured out and what they should have done differently.”

“A lot of our guests are ladies,” Becki continued. “Since they’re generally the ones who plan the family outings. They often bring along their husbands, who might think this kind of thing is silly, but the second that door closes behind them they forget to be skeptical as they start scrambling for answers. Groups with kids have a special advantage, because kids have such fine attention to detail -- they notice the stranger little things, which sets the adults in motion to sort out how they all fit into the bigger picture. It’s a great family dynamic!” “The art of a designing an escape room requires keeping the puzzles intuitive without being obvious. We have to adapt our puzzles to suit our local audience, too -- North Dakotan know-how means our guests figure things out in ways that no one could have anticipated!” Trapped in Bismarck keeps four differently themed escape rooms, which they change regularly to keep things fresh. Their newest room is themed after a prison break, no soup spoon required. They’ve also got a murder mystery themed room on the horizon, so every guest can channel their inner Inspector Clouseau. Others include the ZMB Trials, a zombie apocalypse conundrum, and The Lost Toy, a gentler and less stressful challenge for kids under 12 years old. They even have mobile rooms that can be summoned to parties and corporate events: Their Mad Bomber offers a MacGyver-esque “cut the red wire” challenge, while their Bank Heist lets you pretend for an hour that you have a shot at early retirement. You can see which of Trapped in Bismarck’s rooms sound the most intriguing at trappedinbismarck.com. BisMan Bombshellz by David Scheller

Although it had started out as a legitimate sport back in the 1930s, in the decades that followed roller derby gradually devolved into the female equivalent of the WWE. Scripted fights, fishnet stockings, and miniskirts which doubled as scientific studies into how many sequins a square inch of fabric could support before erupting under its own sparkliness took priority over athleticism, and the outcomes of the matches were often predetermined. Roller derby experienced something of a renaissance last decade, however. The showmanship angle with its stockings and sequins has endured, as have the athletes’ funny stage names like “Honey Basher” and “Princess Cut” -- but the aggression, and the results of each bout for that matter, are very real indeed. When Rena Mehlhoff, who now skates as Anne Thrax, joined BismarckMandan’s very own roller derby team the BisMan Bombshellz in 2010, she did so simply because she saw the new team’s sign-up poster and thought that it sounded like fun. “I never played sports when I was younger,” said Rena, “so it’s weird that I was drawn to a full contact one. The physical competition really makes you grit your teeth and bear it, and giving and taking hits makes you tougher

outside of the arena as well. Who would have thought that I’d love it so much? “I’m only 5’2”, so my job is more to slow down the other team’s skaters by getting in their way. Fortunately our team has women who are a lot bigger and stronger than me to deal out the pain. Of course, you can’t just beat the tar out of people indiscriminately in roller derby. You’ve got to hit below the shoulder and above the knee, the back is off limits, and you can’t trip people. Our team appreciates going home from bouts with the same number of collective teeth that we started with. “Although men compete in roller derby too, it’s mostly a women’s sport because our bodies’ geometries are better suited for it. Our hips give us the lower center of gravity that’s perfect for keeping balance on skates, and we also use our hips to bump other players out of the way and score points.” This of course begs the important question: Just how is roller derby

It is the jammer’s job to lap opponents in order to score points; It is the blockers’ job to make this as difficult a feat for the opposing team’s jammer as possible, while at the same time helping their own. The whole thing can seem like an imbroglio at first, but after a couple of jams you’ll quickly see just what is going on. “After eight long years building this team up, we were finally accepted as a full member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association last July,” Rena continued. “That means we can compete against other teams from around the world to increase our ranking on the global circuit. We’ve already squared off against teams from Montana, Nebraska, and even Canada. Getting ranked has always been the BisMan Bombshellz’ goal, and we’re well on our way to bringing that honor to our hometowns. But to be the best in the world? That distinction currently belongs to a team in Australia. It would take these 20 ladies from North Dakota a long time to get there. “It’s hardly about the ranking at the end of the day, though. The feeling of comradery we all share after building this team up from nothing, that moment of anticipation before each jam when anything can happen, even the horrendous smell of the locker room as we peel off

such circumstances. If you worked for Carry Ashford, you would get it. In addition to his other duties on the farm, the plantation foreman took it upon himself to make a giant batch of his signature barbecue sauce and slather it on a heap of ribs and quartered chickens to reward his men after a big crop had been harvested or some other important milestone had been achieved. Barbecue is the finest tool at a manager’s disposal to keep up morale. The plantation prospered. A committed saucier, Carry would also whip up big batches of the stuff for his 11 children, as well as anyone else in the neighborhood who would be drawn in by the smell of his barbecue. One of his children, Bill, took special note of his father’s sauce’s immense power to bring people together. That power would become his key inheritance from his father.

“It’s a blessing to be able to give what I do to people” “The sauce would go on just about everything back when I was growing up,” recalled Bill of BilyRay’s Old Style Barbecue Sauce. “Sometimes we would just warm up a pot on the stove -- we didn’t have a microwave back then -- and we would all sop it up with pieces of bread. It was good on every kind of meat, it was good on salads, it was good even just on its own. That’s why its taste always brings me back to childhood, because we put it on almost everything back then.” “When the recipe was handed down to me,” Bill continued, “I wasn’t sure that I could improve on such a good thing. My father had already more or less perfected the combination of tomato, sugar, mustard,

The winter months can be dangerous and challenging for all drivers. Even short local trips can be dangerous in inclement weather. It is important that drivers and their vehicles are ready for the most hazardous driving time of the year. • Slow down ahead of turns and curves. • Be prepared for lane changes - move over in a long, gradual line.

• Look out for ice patches. • Anticipate stops by slowing down gradually. • Drive at reduced speeds.

back together again along with my own improvements.”

“My big moment of awakening came in eighth grade,” Travis continued. “I wanted my own hot rod more than anything in the world, but didn’t have much money for one. A friend and I went to the local junkyard, and there buried in the back was the most beautiful ‘65 Impala Super Sport I’d ever seen. I told the owner that I had a driver’s license, and he just kind of laughed at my enthusiasm. He told me that if I could find wheels for it, he’d let drag it home for $200. I was never more excited in my life.” Despite his parents’ protests, that old Impala became a fixture in their yard as Travis spent the next three years putting everything he had into it. He rebuilt its motor, transmission, and differential during shop class (where he racked up so many hours that he wound up teaching it by junior year), and landscaped the local body shop owner’s yard in exchange for a paint job. Although Travis eventually had to sell that Impala, his experience restoring it would never let him drive a stock vehicle ever again. After high school, Travis and his brother moved from the boonies to Bismarck. They worked together there at a Ford dealership, where Travis’ shop chops earned him a place as their sole accessory installer. He realized that he would better customize vehicles on his own, and in 1999 opened the first iteration of Dakota Kustomz.

“The custom bike phase was huge,” explained Travis. “I made some real

works of art during it. I did a bike for the UND Fighting Sioux, another one for Budweiser, and even one that won the People’s Choice Award at

Las Vegas show, where I was up against the biggest names in the custom bike business. I placed 15th out of 100, but seeing that I’m just a farm boy with no college education who has worked hard for everything I’ve ever had...well, I can’t put into words what it means to have gotten that kind of recognition.”

In 2010, the custom bike market crashed thanks to declining interest and an overabundance of cheap knock-offs. That collapse hurt a lot of small custom shops across the country badly, including Travis’. He had

to shelf his ambition for a while as he worked as a construction foreman to make ends meet. That hiatus might have slowed Travis down, but it couldn’t stop his dream. He took a side job at his brother’s used powersports shop working on ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles, and before long Bismarck turned its attention back to his award winning work. In 2016 he sprang back into action and started Dakota Kustomz anew, ready to work on hot rods and custom vehicles and bikes once again. Within six months of reopening Travis was living his dream once more. “Everyday you have to set a goal,” said Travis. “Something to shoot for. Something to achieve. That's what I try to do. I may be 41 years old now, and not getting any younger, but I want to build an empire right here from Bismarck. People need to see that you don’t have to be from the coast or a big city to have vision. With the team I’m building up, and the great bikes and hot rods people in town are bringing us, I think I’ve got as good of a chance as anyone of doing that.”

Rentals and lessons for all ages.

A great place to spend a day before a trip out west. For more information on Travis’ work and vision, visit dakotakustomz.com.
