I was a child bride (1)

I was a child bride My name is Sadia* and I was a child bride. Now I am 16 years old. I have lived all my life in a small village outside Dhaka in Bangladesh. Through this blog I want to tell my story - because I want to be part of the fight against child marriage. I was married when I was 14 years old. My husband, Sumon, is four years older. Together we have Habiba, a little girl of 8 months. My husband is a farmer. He moved here with his family a few years ago. We live with the rest of his extended family in their home which is made up of four houses in a small yard. Around the houses there are rice fields. I didn’t know him before we were married, I had never seen him before. But I'm lucky. I have my old family nearby.

Leaving school I did well at school and enjoyed learning. In 8th grade, I was suddenly told by my parents that I had to quit school. I had only two years left before I was due to finish - I did not want to quit! I loved school, especially maths which was my favorite subject. I always liked school. There was something special about being gathered in a room together - together to learn. Before I dreamed that I would become a teacher so that I could give others the opportunity to learn. It was terrible for me to have to sit inside and watch my friends going to school. But I said nothing and did not complain and did what my parents told me.
