HITACHI DOMINATES JOBSITES

With the launch of the BX100 backhoe loader in the Middle East, Hitachi Construction Machinery is foraying into a popular machine segment, with a tried, tested and proven machine.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East (HMEC) has established a track record for performance, power, and productivity on construction sites not only in the Middle East, but also in the wider area, including North and East Africa. Hitachi’s brand has been founded on its expertise in excavators of all sizes, massive mining shovels, a wide range of wheeled loader types, some of the most durable rigid dump trucks available anywhere, compact earthmoving equipment, and even cranes and foundation equipment.

But the one piece of equipment that every Middle Eastern jobsite needs, the backhoe loader, was absent from Hitachi’s lineup for the region. However, it is no longer the case. To unleash the same Hitachi capability and reliability on the vital backhoe loader (BHL) sector in the region, the Japanese giant has now released the BX100 Shinrai Power backhoe loader.

“For Hitachi the backhoe loader is a new product in our line-up for this part of the world,” says Manabu Arami, President of HMEC. “We have selected to offer it here because we at HMEC believe that there is a well-defined market, both in terms of specific geographical areas where the backhoe loader is in demand as well as for specific tasks for which it is preferred.”

Aiming for growth

According to Hitachi, backhoe loaders account for 50% of all yearly machinery sales in the Middle East on numerous occasions. This implies that leading manufacturer in the regional market must have a popular ‘BHL ’ in their inventory. Thus, Hitachi’s inventory has gotten a significant boost with the release of the BX100 Shinrai Power.

“The backhoe loader has been here for decades, but we feel that we can have a healthy market share,” says Arami. “There’s enough room for an extra brand in the market especially if the product is as good as the one we are offering.”

Ahmed Karar, Product & Technical Support Manager of HMEC adds that the Middle East market, notably in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, will continue to develop and expects that demand for specific types of equipment connected with that expansion will persist for some time.

“After the Covid-19 pandemic, investment in infrastructure - such as roads, smart cities, etc. - is active and ongoing. Many places in the region, like Saudi Arabia, are testament to this. So, we’re entering the BHL market because it’s a big market; there's always demand and even growth in this segment and after Covid there is more infrastructure being built so we’re seeing more demand for the machine. So, this is a good time,” says Karar.

“And also, what we see is that cities such as Doha, Abu Dhabi or Dubai are now being completed, therefore in many places, tracked equipment is not allowed to enter because it may damage the built environment. So, it must be wheeled equipment, such as a BHL, whether for maintenance or minor rebuilding tasks. This is another reason that we believe this product stands a sure chance of being successful.”

Another reason for Hitachi introducing its BHL in the reason is the fact that it always strived to be complete solutions provider for its customers. “Our dealer network has many loyal customers,” explains Arami. “Those customers quite often want a one-stop shop for their equipment needs and one of the main reasons for this is that they want more simplicity and uniformity in their parts inventories.”

“An important feature on our radar for the BHL are equipment owners who have, let’s say, 20 pieces of Hitachi equipment,” adds Arami. “We already have a good relationship with the customer, and now we can offer the BHL as well.”

In-demand machine

With just 1,350 rpm, the Shinrai BX100’s engine produces an incredible 400Nm of torque and 99 horsepower. The tilt bucket comes standard with a capacity of 1.1 cubic meters. It was constructed with durability in mind and has already shown to be dependable and resilient in the face of the most trying circumstances.

“In terms of low lifecycle costs, it has features such as the bestin-class dump height for easy loading, lower fuel consumption in both loader and backhoe operations as well as easy and lowcost maintenance for more profit per hour, says Karar.

“The cabin has a safe, simple and comfortable cabin and an easy and comprehensive operator console designed for simplicity and functionality while in operation,” adds Karar. “The cabin is also a wide-view one, which further contributes to safety and easier operation.”

Tailormade for the region

With the Middle East being one of the most demanding regions, how suitable is a product produced in another geography?

Hitachi has taken great effort to ensure the BX100’s usefulness by rigorously testing it in the worst circumstances that the Middle East can throw at it, as well as altering and customizing the machine to fit the region perfectly.

To demonstrate its durability and dependability, the HMEC sent the BX100 to Saudi Arabia to test the backhoe loader on the country’s terrain. “For months on end the model was carefully tested, evaluated and proven. Our engineers followed upon all aspects of its performance and all parameters were evaluated by our expert team with decades and decades of experience and expertise. Anything that could be subject to improvement was communicated to production and improved - so the product will be available as a ‘Reliable Solution’, as we like to call it,” says Karar.

The HMEC Product & Technical Support Manager adds that interest in a Hitachi backhoe loader has been high in the region for a while from both existing and prospective customers. “The accessibility of the product, commercial wise, is attractive in this region.”

After-sales support

For some time now, HMEC has been preparing for this launch, and all necessary support systems are prepared. The HMEC warehouse has been set up to guarantee spare parts availability while offering dealers the necessary training.

“The BX100 not only provides Hitachi brand quality but also uses our Global e-Service, which provides various data such as on machine operation and technical information, and manuals by Hitachi Construction Machinery,” says Karar. “We are also fully prepared to provide the suitable telematics support depending on the country of operation of the BX100, with the original information system package for the machine.”.

significant milestone marks our dedication to excellence and sets a new standard in the Saudi market.”

The aluminum tank trailer from JuffaliTrucks is specifically designed to transport fuel, chemicals, and other liquid commodities safely and efficiently. It is built with advanced aluminum materials, which offer a range of benefits:

• Lightweight Construction: One of aluminum’s primary advantages is its significantly lower weight than steel. This reduces fuel consumption for the towing vehicle, making the operation more cost-effective.

• Increased Payload Capacity: Due to its lightweight structure, the aluminum tank trailer can carry more liquid cargo without exceeding weight restrictions, enhancing business productivity and profitability.

• Corrosion Resistance: Aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, making it ideal for transporting corrosive liquids and chemicals. This resistance ensures the tank’s longevity and reduces the need for frequent maintenance.

HEAVY DUTY MULTITASKER

Globally, Bobcat machines are a common sight on construction sites. Without one, tasks cannot be completed. The new version of the M-Series S450 skid-steer loader, recently launched for the Middle East and Africa region, comes with a more powerful engine and new control options. takes a closer look at the machine.

The construction market in the UAE today is resilient with a strong growth trajectory and high-valued projects in the pipeline. This in turn makes it a very strong market in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) for Bobcat’s loaders. “MEA is a big market for skid-steer loaders (SSLs) and backhoe loaders (BHLs) and beginning to grow for compact track loaders (CTLs),” says Gaby Rhayem, Regional Director Middle East-Africa-CIS for Doosan Bobcat EMEA.

“SSLs are the king of any construction site; you will not find any construction site without an SSL or BHL,” continues Rhayem.

Along with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa are leading the market for loaders. “The market is growing in most of these countries as construction projects and cleaning projects are expanding, so we expect continuous growth to carry on in these areas,” he says.

Growth comes with its set of challenges and Bobcat continues to invest to ensure the company offers machines that are suitable for use in high heat and humidity and for working in the hard conditions found in the regional environment. All Bobcat compact loaders are built in Czechia (small and medium frame) and in the US (big frame).

For parts, the company stocks its spares in the UAE where there is their Parts Distribution Center (PDC) in the Jebel Ali Free Zone. This PDC serves the entire Middle East and East Africa. “We are planning to expand our PDC and integrate the business of Bobcat’s material handling within the same PDC. However, for manufacturing in the region, there is no plan for now, but things can change if big opportunities arise,” says Rhayem.

Bobcat’s machines

Bobcat’s S450 is the successor to the previous S130 model. The latest version of the S450 comes with new options and features. It has an improved engine with 50 hp and higher torque and an increase from 2.2 to 2.4 l in displacement. It

has a new air conditioning option, joystick control option and versatile tyres. The design, balance and weight distribution of this SSL delivers more usable horsepower, powerful breakout forces and faster cycle times.

The S550 is a larger model with a change from 62 hp to 66 hp in the engine, high flow capability for attachments, and other additional options like in the S450. Other models include the larger S630 and S770 with more power flow and vertical lift capacity. These models are sold mainly in combination with attachments that require high hydraulic flow. Also, compact track loaders are gaining popularity in the region, especially the T590 and T770 models.

Bobcat’s SSLs are currently being used mainly in construction, but many other applications are carried out using the loaders - for agriculture projects using augers, wood chippers and trenchers. For cleaning projects where the machines are used with sweepers, pressure washers and angle brooms; for maintenance and industrial projects, with breaking with breakers. On the beach, on sand and in farms for cleaning, in forestry. These machines are trenching with special

attachments like wheel saws, with self-levelling planers on road surfaces, for soil and asphalt spreading, for grading with Bobcat Graders and for landscaping with many suitable attachments such as scarifiers, tillers and soil conditioners.

Building better

Bobcat continuously collects customer feedback and turns these suggestions into product enhancements, for example the new options on the S450, the power increase on the S550 and more possibilities with track loaders. “The current M-Series replaced the previous K-Series machines which were built in the years from 2004 -2014. The change to the M-Series allowed us to satisfy the requirements of both lower and higher regulated emission countries using just one platform,” adds Rhayem.

The S450 replaced the S130 several years ago. Regionally, the main machines sold here are the S450 and the S630 skid-steer loaders. Other machines sold include the S550. “We sell a small number of S770 models in the region which is equivalent to the S76 sold in Europe,” concludes Rhayem.

Bobcat’s SSLs - a closer look

When not carrying loads, SSLs typically have a weight distribution of 70% in the rear and 30% in the front. This ensures easy turning and skidding for ideal work execution. The distribution of weight minimises fuel consumption and power requirements and maximises drive train and tyre life.

The machines offer customers a choice of two liftpath options - vertical lift-path machines provide more reach at full lift height, while radius lift-path models offer maximum reach at truck-bed height. Both are durable and patented single-plane designs which reduce side-to-side lift arm movement and minimise load on the pins.

The star feature has to be Bobcat’s Selectable Joystick Controls (SJC). The low-effort joysticks are loaded with Bobcat-exclusive features and fingertip switches. These make controlling the loader and its attachments easier and comfortable.

Bobcat’s SSLs offer a smooth ride and reduce material spillage through its Automatic Ride Control feature. It allows travel at faster speeds across rough terrain.

With better visibility, Bobcat’s SSL and CTL cabs are designed for all-around visibility improving safety and efficiency. While grading next to a building or loading the machine on a trailer, the operator has better sight lines for easier and faster operation. Also, bucket corners are easily visible as well as tracks or tyres without raising the loader arms.

These better-built loaders rely on a range of features that help minimise maintenance and protect the machine: machine shutdown protection, self-diagnostics, battery run-down protection amongst other features. The machines come with easy, full access to the engine checks and fills, filters and battery.

The new S450 reinforces the company’s reliability track record. This indicates why Bobcat is still selling over 1,000 S450 machines a year on average in the MEA markets. Additionally, the company has a market share of more than 50%, with certain MEA countries seeing this percentage rise to almost 80%. After four years or 4,000 hours of heavy-duty operation, a used S450’s resale value is typically 60% of its original price..

PERFORMANCE DRIVEN

As fleet managers expand their excavator fleets to meet growing demand, new models from top manufacturers like Caterpillar and Hitachi Construction Machinery feature enhanced performance and efficiency, driving down ownership costs.

Driven by infrastructure projects and urban development, the construction boom in 2024 has seen a significant uptick in excavator sales this year, says Samer Ismail, Product Manager - Earthmoving and Excavation at Caterpillar distributor Al-Bahar. “Additionally, the increasing focus on efficiency and fuel efficiency has led to a higher demand for advanced excavator models,” says Ismail.

In terms of utilization trends, customers increasingly seek versatile machines capable of handling a broader range of tasks, from excavation and material handling to demolition and site preparation, notes Ismail.

Thanks to their power and versatility, excavators are essential across a wide spectrum of projects, from residential construction to large-scale infrastructure development.

It has three different power modes, allowing operators to get the performance they need for a specific task while conserving fuel. That encompasses Power mode, with maximum power, Smart mode that which automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to digging conditions to lower fuel consumption, and Eco mode, which minimises fuel consumption by dropping engine speed to a constant 1,500 RPM.

Impressive maintenance intervals also deliver savings, with engine oil and fuel filters synchronized for service at 500 hours, increasing uptime and reducing parts and labor costs.

Fuel tank capacity sits at 600 liters, while the hydraulic system has a 373-liter capacity (including the 161-liter hydraulic tank).

With the machine designed for global markets including the Middle East, with high-ambient temperature capability of

52˚C, the air intake filter with pre-cleaner features high dust capacity, while a high-efficiency hydraulic fan offers optional automatic reverse to keep cores free from debris.

“Cat’s reputation for reliability is well-deserved,” says Ismail. “Coupled with features like VisionLink, our customers can benefit from increased uptime and reduced maintenance costs. This ultimately contributes to higher residual values for their machines.”

A new generation

This year Hitachi Construction Machinery launched its new generation ZX350H Zaxis-7G hydraulic excavator, a key machine and part of its revamped range that includes the larger ZX490LC-7G, ZX690LC-7G, ZX890LC-7G machines.

The ZX350H-7G weighs in at around 34 tonnes, with an Isuzu 6HK1 engine that develops 200 kW of power at 1,900 rpm (ISO 14396), with over 1,000NM of torque.

With the machine having been demonstrated at a number of customer events across the region, so far the response has

been very positive, with customers impressed by the machine performance and productivity, says Ahmed Karar, Product & Technical Support Manager at Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East.

“The improved swing- speed as well as the improved fuel consumption, which is reduced by around 20% compared to the previous model, makes it a game changer in the market,” says Karar. “Customers who own this machine or have had a chance to try it in a demo at one of our events, are simply loving the total performance of the machine.”

Ergonomic features include a newly-designed spacious cab, 8-inch display, high performance AC, and easily adjustable controls. “This makes it enjoyable and easy to operate, especially in long shifts,” he says.

Karar notes that the product development processes for the machines drew extensively on customer feedback, coupled with Hitachi’s innovation and in-house engineering know-how.

Efficiency-focused features include an eco-gauge, which displays the current fuel consumption during an operation, helping the operator achieve lower fuel consumption; automatic engine shutdown after a specific time of idling; and eco guidance, which prompts operators to achieve better fuel economy.

The machine is also optimised for using a diverse range of attachments, with the ability to change flow, pressure and controllability settings using the multifunctional monitor in the cab, and create up to 16 named and customised presets.

HMEC attachments include crusher, breaker, grapple, drum cutter, vibro-hammer along with a large range of bucket sizes, allowing users to achieve optimum performance across a large range of special applications.

The new range of machines are specifically designed to operate in the harsh conditions of the Middle East and Africa.

Thickened steel plates, damage prevention plates and square bars have been added to sections of the XZ350H-7G boom and arm that face most wear, for additional durability. A new pin design on the boom is designed to reduce jerking and noise, and lubricated with HN Bushing the greasing interval is extended up to 500 hours.

All the new ZX-7G models are equipped with an updated higher efficiency filtration system. “This substantially increases the service intervals. Along with the new robust components design that makes it the perfect candidate for the Middle East and Africa regions,” concludes Karar..

Hazard detection system

The bird’s-eye view feature, originally found in passenger vehicles, uses external cameras to create a top-down perspective, giving operators a clear view of potential hazards around the machine.

This technology is now being applied to heavy-duty machinery, available as an option on Hitachi’s new Zaxis-7G. Along with an optional rear vision camera, the bird’s-eye view shows a top-down view around 270 degrees of the machine.

Operator awareness of the surrounding area is a key safety factor in reducing operational hazards, notes Ahmed Karar, Product & Technical Support Manager at Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East.

“The aerial system provides an accurate view of any surrounding hazards and notifies the operators of any human or object approaching the working space, using multi sound and visual grade notifications depending on how close the approaching object is to the working parameter.”

NEW ROLE

SHAPING AFRICA’S SKYLINE

As Africa’s urbanization accelerates, tower cranes are playing a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s skyline. Nevertheless, manufacturers face tight competition, currency constraints and diverse customer requirements across the region.

With tower cranes serving as key drivers of urbanization and development in Africa, manufacturers are seeing rising demand. However, intense competition and factors like foreign currency availability can create hurdles for importers.

Carina El Rkaiby, Manitowoc’s regional sales manager for the Middle East, Africa, and CIS, shares that the African tower crane market is experiencing significant growth in 2024.

“This growth stems from increasing urbanization with projects like high-rise buildings, public housing, and civil infrastructure,” she says. “The growth pockets are small but highly competitive.”

Key markets for Potain include South Africa, where demand has surged post-election. “We see the government prioritizing projects like educational facilities, public housing, and infrastructure.”

In Egypt, despite FX struggles, there are signs of improvement, according to El Rkaiby. Residential projects and high-rises are also fueling demand in Kenya and the Ivory Coast.

“In East Africa, particularly Tanzania, Potain cranes are building a hydroelectric power plant,” she adds.

Feedback from Potain’s dealers and key clients highlights improved utilization rates. “After years of low demand, rental companies that managed their fleets well are now stronger, building competitive product offerings,” says El Rkaiby.

On the owner-operator side, many African markets have traditionally relied on used equipment, which can be influenced by cyclical trends. “With Europe experiencing a slowdown, many idle cranes have made their way to Africa,” she explains.

Nonetheless, rising concerns about safety, reliability, and utilization are increasing the demand for new cranes. “We’re seeing growing interest in cranes, particularly in the 5-8 tonne range, such as our MCT85, MCT135, and MCT185 models,” she notes. These are topless slewing cranes known for their compact and versatile design.

Launched in 2021, the MCT135 is available in 6 or 8 tonne capacities, with a 60-meter maximum jib length and a height under hook of up to 50.9 meters.

This crane can be erected in less than 1.5 days on a wellprepared site, with the top section and full jib transportable in just five containers, reducing costs for transport and setup. Its compact form makes it ideal for operating alongside other cranes on urban construction or infrastructure sites.

El Rkaiby also reports demand for larger cranes, including 12-tonne, 16-tonne, 25-tonne, and 40-tonne models, especially for special projects in Ivory Coast and Tanzania.

“Customers appreciate Potain cranes for their ease of installation, innovative technology, and efficient load charts,” she says. “Our cranes are user-friendly, easy to maintain, and come with excellent after-sales support, ensuring high demand, strong ROI, and high residual value if sold post-project.”

Navigating Africa’s diversity, with its 54 countries, poses challenges for any OEM. El Rkaiby emphasizes that Potain’s full range offers the flexibility in products, configurations, and price points needed to meet diverse customer needs.

“We offer full-service contracts, covering everything from erection to disassembly,” she says. “Extended warranties also provide peace of mind to operators.”

For clients with urgent timelines or limited budgets, Potain provides a wide range of used cranes from both Europe and Asia. These cranes can be sold ‘as is’ or refurbished with a warranty. Potain’s EnCORE program refurbishes used cranes to a factory-approved standard, allowing them to be sold with a warranty.

“Our used crane programs enable customers to market and transfer cranes globally through our platform. Potain remains

by our customers’ side throughout the process, ensuring safe, reliable operations,” she says.

A challenging region

Discussing regional sales, Rui Andrade, Liebherr’s Area Sales Manager for Africa, highlights the diversity of customer needs across different countries and segments on the continent.

“In less developed regions, speed isn’t a top concern, particularly in construction. There’s a preference for simple, low-cost equipment,” says Andrade.

“In contrast, sectors like mining, energy, and shipyards demand the same high standards seen globally. This diversity makes the African market particularly challenging.”

Liebherr meets these needs by focusing on productivity and jobsite performance.

“We closely engage with customers during product development to ensure we address their specific requirements,” Andrade notes.

One of Liebherr’s top-selling models is the NC-B 12-70 tower crane, produced at its India factory. This flat-top crane has a 12-tonne lift capacity and a 70-meter maximum radius. Key features include high accuracy for load positioning, durable

construction, and a control system with limit switches, as well as the largest working radius in its class.

“The NC-B 12-70 is cost-effective, with lower operational expenses, reduced energy consumption, easy maintenance, and fewer spare parts needs, all while maintaining Liebherr’s hallmark efficiency and performance,” says Andrade.

Self-erecting cranes are another innovation for which Liebherr is known. While Algeria frequently uses the 81K and 125K models, Andrade notes that self-erecting cranes are less common elsewhere in Africa, usually appearing only when European contractors bring them in.

Used Liebherr cranes, particularly models from 5 to 12 tonnes, are sought after due to their global reputation for quality and reliability. “These cranes remain highly valued because customers know they can operate them for many more years,” Andrade says.

Service and support are essential to keeping cranes running and ensuring reliability. Liebherr is focused on delivering a high level of support to customers, with a “multi-faceted approach focused on reliability, responsiveness, and value,” says Andrade.

That includes dedicated customer support teams who are available 24/7 via multiple channels, as well as worldwide availability of certified technicians so that support “is available whenever needed and wherever the equipment is located,” he says.

Looking ahead to the business outlook, Andrade says that infrastructure investment, construction trends, and economic factors will drive demand for tower cranes in 2024. “Governments are focusing on infrastructure, which should boost demand. The residential and commercial sectors remain strong as well.”

Global factors like inflation, interest rates, and geopolitical stability also influence the crane market, he explains. “In Africa, key markets include South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Libya, Kenya, and Egypt, though currency shortages continue to limit imports.”.

SCHMITZ CARGOBULL INVESTS IN GROWING SPARE PARTS BUSINESS

Schmitz Cargobull is investing in the expansion of its central warehouse for spare parts at Altenberge, Germany. This will ensure a high level of material availability for service partners and customers through improved utilisation at the site.

Schmitz Cargobull’s European spare parts business has grown strongly in recent years. In order to be able to offer fast and reliable delivery of more than 80,000 spare parts, the company is continuously expanding its range of services.

With the new narrow-aisle warehouse more storage space for additional spare parts has been created. Spare parts for Berger lightweight vehicles will also be distributed from the site.

“Compared to independent dealers, Schmitz Cargobull offers a decisive advantage: one-stop shopping and parts identification via the chassis number in the EPOS spare parts portal, which enables fast repairs and high uptime for Schmitz Cargobull trailers,” says Britta Sprey, Managing Director at Cargobull Parts & Services.

Expanded central warehouse

The new, manually operated narrow-aisle warehouse has eight aisles and a rack height of 14 metres. It offers around 3,300 pallet spaces and stores pallet cages, Euro pallets and half pallets. Different shelf heights optimise warehouse utilisation.

The relocation of materials under the roof enables shorter routes in the warehouse, which improves process quality. The improved material availability also leads to shorter delivery times, and further measures to increase and improve storage capacity are planned.

“We now have 29 distribution centres throughout Europe to ensure that we can supply our workshops and customers with the most common spare parts 24/7,” says Sprey. “The central warehouse in Altenberge is used as a distribution centre for Germany and Austria. From here, we supply the international distribution centres several times a day or, if required, we can deliver directly to our service partners throughout Europe.”

Since January 2023, Schmitz Cargobull has relied on 100% digital processes in the central warehouse – from delivery to loading. Employees work with back-of-hand and finger scanners as well as industrial tablets, which enables efficient and secure processes.

EPOS spare parts portal

The Schmitz Cargobull spare parts portal EPOS (Electronic Parts Documentation and Ordering System) is a comprehensive database with a selection of around 80,000 spare parts items. The platform offers service partners and customers with their own workshops everything they need for maintaining trailers and refrigeration units. It acts as a convenient “one-stop shop”, providing access to all spare parts from Schmitz Cargobull and other brand manufacturers.

All common components, chassis and wear parts are available from the Schmitz Cargobull central warehouse, and the 29 distribution centres in Europe. The EPOS portal now contains over 1.4 million documented vehicles. By entering the VIN (chassis number), the service partner can easily identify the required spare parts and order them via the web shop, regardless of opening hours or call centre availability..
