+ Ride to honor accident victims

A memorial ride will be held Saturday, April 4, for a two men who were killed in a Polk County motorcycle crash. Johnathan “Johny” Walker, 25, of Plant City, and Christopher Bowmer, 23, of Lakeland, died March 15 after Bowmer made a U-turn in front of Walker. Walker tried to swerve and avoid a crash, but they collided. Both men leave behind families. The ride starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Silver Dollar Saloon, 107 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard. Food, drinks, a deejay, auction, car and bike wash, bounce house and raffle will be the entertainment. A route is set up through the mines to show respects. Cars, bikes, scooters and trucks are all welcome to join the ride. Proceeds from the event will go to their families.

Hospital continues to advance in 2015 One of the biggest upcoming improvements for South Florida Baptist Hospital will be the construction of a 17-bed ICU.

South Florida Baptist Hospital just opened its new surgery center, but the updates and construction projects at the hospital will be continuing throughout this spring and summer. In the last few weeks, two new operating rooms were approved and used for a few procedures. The surgery center’s final inspection was also completed. With the new center, the hospital is able to accommodate 12% more surgery patients in six areas: general sur-

gery, orthopedic, gynecologic, neurospine, ENT and vascular. But other areas of the hospital are also going through changes. One wing of the hospital was given a new name: the Steve and Krista Howard Heart and Vascular Center. Though the heart and vascular center opened in 2010, it was named for these donors March 15, 2015. Steve Howard is president and CEO of Patterson Companies in Plant City. He also

has served on the board of the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation since 2013. “(The Howards) have had family members who have suffered from heart disease, so it was a good match for him,” Karen Kerr, the hospital’s president, said. The next big project for the hospital will be the addition of a new and bigger ICU. Construction will start this summer.

T

he end of the school year is in sight, and athletics teams are preparing for playoffs and other post-season challenges. But one group of students at Plant City High School is getting ready to compete in an entirely different kind of competition — one that involves rifles, flags and extreme attention to detail. One drill team and two color guard teams from Plant City JROTC will be competing at the state level — a first for all of them. And they attribute their success to their collective dedication. “None of us would have been able to get to state without each other,” Faith Girmscheid, commander of the female unarmed squad, said. For those who have never seen a drill team competition, battalion commander Jordan Wetherington describes it as
