New head coach Ron Hawn is confident that, if he can keep the current roster committed, the days of the Chargers dwelling in the 7A-9 basement won’t last much longer. Still — no playoffs for these guys, in my opinion, but I think they can finally snap that cold streak this year and pick up some wins.

hey say time flies when you’re having fun. I can say I’ve been having fun covering sports this summer, but time without high school football is more like a crawl. It’s back now! Our long wait is over, and we’re ready to get into the regular season Friday. Aug. 26. After last week’s preseason slate, Durant, Plant City and Strawberry Crest are revved up. Of course, it wouldn’t be the start of the regular season without our annual Football Guide. This year’s theme, the “Road to the Playoffs,” means exactly what you think: the three area teams are hoping to either repeat success, get over the hump or shock Hillsborough County to cruise into meaningful November football. If last year was any indication, the road to Class 7A-District 9 gold and silver runs through the Plant City area. Who's done the most work under the hood? Who’s equipped to handle the long haul? Who are the new guys commanding these vehicles? When you finish reading the guide, you’ll know who to watch, how the teams operate

ife is easier for a football program when it doesn’t face many ques-

sired win over Newsome, 16-14; and thrashed East Bay, 34-14, in the district opener. Even the team’s first misstep, a 27-24 double-overtime loss at Leonard, wasn’t something to get too bummed about — especially since it outscored Bloomingdale and Strawberry Crest, 43-28, in its next two games. The Cougars have long relied on a physical run game to wear down opponents, but then-sophomore quarterback Carlton Potter established himself as a solid pocket passer and earned Gottman’s trust. Potter threw 12 touchdowns against three interceptions, racking up 1,033 yards and a 93.2 quarterback rating. Although then-senior Austin Resendez led the team with 384 receiving yards, two of the team’s new offensive stars started to emerge: wideout Brandon Myers led the group with six touchdown catches, and tight end Steven Witchoskey scored three times and averaged 15 yards per catch. Jake Harris solidified himself as the team’s top running back, going for 872 yards and four touchdowns. Harris, known for his athleticism, will be joined in the stable this season by Cameron Myers, who averaged eight yards per carry on 20 touches last season. On defense, mike linebacker Jake Ross led the team with 92 tackles (49 solo, 43 assisted). Defensive back Jaden Garrett was the unit’s other leader, with 66 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and a blocked field goal. The only problem was that, because of a boatload of injuries, a weakened Durant team lost its final three games: 21-16 against Plant City in the Redman Cup Game; 28-0 against a ferocious

The team’s focus has been staying injury-free, which has mostly worked thus far. Doing so meant the boys had to step up their game in the weight room. “We’ve got a very good strength and conditioning program,” Gottman says. “We started lifting in January, right up until spring ball. As soon as spring ball was over, we kept lifting. We worked really hard in the weight room to develop that mass, strength and speed.” He set out to get a bigger, stronger, faster team, and the boys — especially Potter, who gained 40 pounds in the offseason — complied. Of course, not everything went

to plan. The team lost Garrett to a torn ACL, and the staff wasn’t immediately sure who would replace him. “It’s hard to fill a guy’s shoes like Jaden’s,” Gottman says. “He’s been a three-year starter for us. But, you know, next guy up.’” Even without Garrett, the offseason work has given Gottman and the Cougars high hopes for

Rather than get deep into new concepts, schemes and ideas, the 2015 district champions are opting to stick to their guns. opener. He said the Raiders might have been overthinking things. Meyer and the staff simplified things, allowing the athletes to play to their strengths rather than be confined by complex schemes. It couldn’t have worked much better. The Raiders’ defense held opponents to 12.5 points per game in the team’s 11 wins, and the offense’s points per game total improved upon 2014 by 10 points. It twice shut down district runner-up Tampa Bay Tech, edged out a tough Durant team, 21-16, overcame Lennard star running back Jahryn Bailey in a 28-20 win and proved its offense can hang in a shootout with a 47-34 win over East Lake. The offense was led by running back Markese Hargrove, whose season nabbed him the Guy Toph Award, given annually to the top Hillsborough County player. Junior quarterback Corey King threw for 1,646 yards and 15 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He picked up 396

Thompson’s 692 yards led the team, as did Chase’s nine touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Cory Cotnoir led the team with 150 tackles (85 solo, 65 assisted), and Steven Ogletree was right behind him with 138 tackles (83 solo, 55 assisted). Ogletree tied Cody Cribbs for the team lead with nine of the Raiders’ 57 sacks, while Cotnoir picked up eight. Will Crest pass its 2015 record?

H

ead coach Ron Hawn wants to make one thing clear: everyone who walks out of Strawberry Crest’s tunnel this season will do so because they’re committed. Hawn, hired earlier this year, entered a program that could be pictured in a dictionary with the word “rebuild.” Crest is coming off of a winless 2015, in which the program replaced coaches John Kelly with Jim Peaden and suffered

In short, Hawn has a lot of work to do. “I think our (participation) numbers are a badge of honor,” Hawn says. “Our numbers are not tremendous, and that’s really because we’ve held our feet to the fire with what we’re trying to accomplish. After starting the season with a five-game losing streak, in which the Chargers gave up 176 points and scored 35, the school decided to remove Kelly from the head coaching position and go with Peaden. Things hardly got better for the Chargers, although they did come close to a win in Peaden’s first game: a 28-21 loss at Lennard. The offense did improve in Peaden’s first three games, jumping from seven points per game to 18, but could only come up with a safety in a 38-2 loss to Bloomingdale. It was shut out by Gaither, 9-0, to end the season. Quarterback Tate Whatley, who has since transferred to Lakeland Christian, threw for 1,399 yards with five touchdowns and nine interceptions. Two of his leading targets — Tyler Hood and Austin Eldridge — are now at Plant City, and both combined for 781 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Bryce Blackmon became the bell cow in his senior season, gaining 763 yards on 199 touches and scoring five touchdowns. The rest of the team’s rushers combined for 86 yards. Linebacker Jordan Zilbar led the defense in his senior season, picking up 90 total tackles (27 solo, 63 assisted). It was also a good year for returning linebacker Michael Acosta, who finished second on the team with 72 total tackles (18 solo, 54 assisted). Then-senior Omar Williams led the team with five sacks. After the season ended, Crest opted to keep Peaden on the staff as an assistant but sought a change at head coach.

In Hawn’s opinion, Crest’s two major strengths will be its ground game and its defense. “We’re going to run the ball, so we’re going to find a way to run the ball if that means we’re going to use six running backs to do it,” he says. “It’s going to be like ‘Moneyball.’ We don’t need a 2,000 yard rusher but, if we can get four 500-yard rushers, that’s a good season.” He plans to use a two-back, pro-style offense and utilize fullback Mason Nikel. The Chargers will be a run-first team while sophomore starting quarterback Braxton Plunk develops. “Braxton’s smart,” Hawn says. “He’s got a good, strong arm, and he’s smart. We will build towards that.” Hawn is excited about the defense and has high hopes in his 4-2-5 system. He singled out Acosta, who will play some strong safety, defensive linemen Connor Smith and Noah Hand,

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THIS TEAM? I just try to do my best and bring a lot of leadership. I try to do as much as I can because all the young guys and everybody is looking up to me, so I’ve got to do the right thing to make sure that they’re doing the right thing.

WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SEASON? Definitely get a better record than last year and stay healthy throughout the season. We kind of fell off the past couple of seasons. We need to stay on a high level and never go down, just keep rising up. The whole team.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE UPCOMING SEASON? I feel pretty good with coach Pax. I kind of miss Coach (Greg) Meyer, because he’s a great coach, but I feel good with all the people we have here.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE THOSE YOUNG GUYS? Just work hard, go 100% every play and leave everything on the field.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO HELP MAKE SURE DURANT DOESN’T END THIS SEASON LIKE LAST SEASON? Stay healthy. Keep a high sense of urgency. Usually, the last couple of seasons, we’ve gone downhill. We really need to worry about the rest of the season and not just live on 4-0. We’ve got to live on 10-0.

WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS? I try to be a leader on the team. I try to make sure everyone does what they’re supposed to and keep everyone in check. I try to command the O-line, too, call the plays when they needed to be called out and try to point out all the mistakes that we'd make. WHAT DO THINK THIS TEAM BRINGS TO THE TABLE THAT MIGHT SURPRISE SOME PEOPLE? We’ve got a lot of conditioning. I think we’re going to last a lot longer than a lot of the teams we’ll play this year. We’re going to try to outlast the teams and, hopefully, go 10-0.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD PLAYER? I lift everybody up, make sure they’re doing their job and make sure everything’s going good. That’s about it. Just keep chopping.

WHAT GAME ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST? This year, I’m looking forward to the Durant game. We’ve still got the (Redman Cup) trophy, and we’ve got to keep it here, where it belongs. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT FROM LAST SEASON? When we were playing Freedom, and I got in on kickoff. It was my first game I actually played in. On the first play, when the man returned the ball and I was coming downfield, that was when I had my first hit. The crowd had actually seen it, and there was a good pop.

WHAT’S IT LIKE, CATCHING PASSES FROM YOUR BROTHER ON THE SAME HIGH SCHOOL TEAM? Right now, it’s back to little league. He (Corey King) was one of the first quarterbacks that ever threw me the ball. It’s just like back to little league all over again. The Turkey Creek Trojans. It was my first time ever playing football. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THIS SEASON? Really, I’m looking forward to Armwood. Right now, everybody’s doubting us — Plant City’s not going to do this, Plant City’s not going to do that — now that we got a lot of people out. I’m just like, I don’t talk too much — just show up and play. I’m looking forward to our crowd because they always get us pumped up, especially the wide receivers. PlantCityObserver.com

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THIS TEAM? I think I make a lot of plays ... hype up other people ... teach some younger guys some stuff.

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THE TEAM? I bring the fire and effort out to this team. Physicality. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS? This team should definitely improve. We should win six to seven games this year. We have improved dramatically.

12 PLANT CITY TIMES & OBSERVER | 2016 FOOTBALL GUIDE

ithout a doubt, many Plant City-area players had a great 2015 season. But who, individually, had the best season? While it would be easy to point out Markese Hargrove, who won an award for being Hillsborough County’s best football player, I think there are a lot of guys who deserve credit. I’ve put together a list of football players who, going beyond their own teams, I consider to have been most valuable at their position in 2015. Because many of us are getting back into the fantasy football spirit, I made a couple of fantasy-style lists. About the defensive picks: because there was solid linebacker play at all three schools, my “fantasy team” is using four linebackers in a 3-4 defense.

OFFENSE QB: COREY KING (PCHS)

Scoop: It took a while for King to get comfortable in the offense but, when he did, his confidence was big for the Raiders. Although he did not have a good outing against Braden River, throwing three of his seven picks, King’s arm and legs showed this kid could be the most dangerous signal-caller in the area. RB1: MARKESE HARGROVE (PCHS)

Scoop: Is there a bigger no-brainer than this? Hargrove earned the Guy Toph award with a stellar, 1,700-yard senior season and proved that, as Muggsy Bogues famously said, “You’re never too small to ball.” RB2: JAKE HARRIS (DHS)

Scoop: Durant has a history of producing quality running backs, and Harris is the latest one. The senior was placed into a committee last season, but managed to stand out with 872 yards on 162 carries and four touchdowns. He’s also been known to hurdle a defender or two, which, while illegal by FHSAA standards, is encouraged by everyone else’s. WR1: T.J. CHASE (PCHS)

Scoop: Chase came back from a year at IMG Academy with the goal of taking his team to the promised land. He proved to be every bit as dangerous as people thought he would be when he had a breakout sophomore season in Plant City. He became King’s most reliable red-zone target, hauling in nine touchdown catches. Chase and teammate Antoine Thompson also play defensive back. WR2: ANTOINE THOMPSON (PCHS)

Scoop: My rough (and probably inaccurate) estimate is that

PlantCityObserver.com

FLEX: TYDRE WARD (PCHS)

Scoop: Plant City likes to use Ward in a similar way as NFL teams have used Darren Sproles in the past. What Ward lacks in height, he makes up for in versatility — he was a solid passing option as well as the team’s best return man — and heart.

Ogletree’s junior season showed that this ‘backer has what it takes to be a star on any squad. LB3: JAKE ROSS (DHS)

Scoop: “Active” is the word most often used to describe Durant’s mike linebacker. Ross recorded 10.2 tackles per game as a junior, totaling 92, and anchored a defense that won five of its first six games, which helped the Cougars make a few “top 10” lists throughout the season. LB4: JORDAN ZILBAR (SCHS)

Scoop: Short, sweet and to the point: Markese Hargrove doesn’t win the Guy Toph without that offensive line.

Scoop: Zilbar could also be considered the MVP of Strawberry Crest’s 2015 squad. As a senior, he finished with a team-leading 90 total tackles and tied for the team lead with five quarterback hurries. Averaging nine tackles per game, Zilbar was among the most consistent of the Chargers throughout the year.

K: PEYTON LEDBETTER (DHS)

DB1: JADEN GARRETT (DHS)

DEFENSE

DB2: TAMMARION FAISON (PCHS)

OL: PLANT CITY RAIDERS

Scoop: Ledbetter led all area kickers with 42 total points scored, between field goals and PATs. He hit 70% (8-for-11) of his field goal attempts and is directly responsible for the Cougars’ 16-14 win over Newsome, the only area kicker to hit a legitimate game-winner.

DL: PLANT CITY RAIDERS

Scoop: Honestly, Plant City’s entire defense has a case to fill up this half of the list. But the unit benefitted greatly from getting a good push up front, as is usually the case, thanks to James Alexander, Josh Crowell, Kijafi Coney and company. LB1: CORY COTNOIR (PCHS)

Scoop: Cotnoir led Plant City with 150 total tackles (11.5 per game) and 18 tackles for loss and also recorded eight sacks. To be more accurate, the two-sport athlete led everybody. Deep as Plant City may be at the position, losing a guy of this caliber to graduation is always going to sting a little. LB2: STEVEN OGLETREE (PCHS)

Scoop: Dubbed “the Cleanup Man” by the Raiders’ announce team, Ogletree’s 138 total tackles (10.6 per game) and team-leading nine sacks would have been tops in the area if not for Cotnoir.

PlantCityObserver.com

Scoop: Durant’s top defensive back played well wherever he was slotted in 2015. He averaged 7.5 tackles per game — including a whopping 19 against Newsome — and showed equal parts athleticism and awareness. As an added bonus, he also proved to be a capable return man.

Scoop: If the ball is in the air, there’s a good chance Faison is tracking it like a hawk. He led all area players with six interceptions in his junior season, broke up 13 passes and forced a fumble. DB3: KWEST FLUITT (PCHS)

Scoop: In his senior season, Fluitt proved to be as reliable a player as any on the Raiders’ roster. The safety recorded 93 total tackles (7.2 per game), two picks and two sacks in 2015. That tackle total led all Plant City defensive backs; the next-highest total was T.J. Chase’s 79. DB4: XAVIER WALDEN (DHS)

Scoop: Although Walden is on the small side for a cornerback, he proved to be a good option for Durant in 2015. He finished with 47 total tackles — 13 against Newsome — which is good for second on the team among all defensive backs. 214149

Thompson only came off the field for one play per game in 2015. At least, that’s what I saw. The reason he got so much run on offense and defense is because Thompson’s closest comparison is none other than Chase. Had he not torn his ACL this summer, he might have been able to surpass Chase’s numbers.

UNDER THE

HOOD Three Plant City-area athletes are fueled by more than just football glory.

E

verybody has a story to tell. This year, the Plant City Times & Observer wanted to go beyond the gridiron and find out what drives local athletes to do great things on and off the field. Coaches from Durant, Plant City and Strawberry Crest were asked who would be the best fit for this feature. We wanted the “glue guys,” the unsung heroes, the team captains who embrace their leadership roles and guys who operate with a drive that some, maybe many, of their peers don’t have. For Durant: defensive back Jaden Garrett. For Plant City: defensive lineman Corey St. John. For Strawberry Crest: fullback Mason Nikel. They have stories of injury recovery, forced sport changes and last-minute efforts to try new things. They have stories of family influence, from fatherson bonding to life in a single-parent household. They’ve got stories of overcoming uncertainty and adversity to make it onto the gridiron. And the’ve got stories of how they take their off-field life experiences and apply them to football, leadership and brotherhood.

There’s much more to any given high school football player than meets the eye. Each athlete is a living, breathing person with real-world problems and passions underneath those matching pads, jerseys and helmets that everyone wears. Go to PlantCityObserver.com to read their stories.

“My hope is that you all come away from these stories with a deeper appreciation of what goes on off the field - which, as you’ll see, often affects the game in ways that aren’t always obvious. There are reasons these kids are out there doing what they do, how they do it.”
