Blossoming downtown Thanks to efforts by City Manager Bill McDaniel, the final stages of his downtown refresh project are underway. The streets are all striped and the sidewalks have been restored to their former glory in the means of solid pressure washing and minor repairs. The 19 long-empty planters on Evers Street received new occupants on June 25 with the addition of Coontie Palms, which have palm and fern-like characteristics.

Business owners met to discuss how social media can generate sales and a virtual following. BREANNE WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

Utilizing online resources like social media and websites can launch a business to success. Local business owners gathered at Krazy Kup for the June Main Street Hot Coffee Topics meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss online tools to expand sales. Without an online presence, it can be difficult to attract new customers to a brick-and-mortar store. Social media connects communities and allows potential shoppers to take a peek into what is offered at their hometown establishments. Some in Plant City have zero online engagement, relying on

A group of missionaries from St. Clement Catholic Church’s young adult ministry spent a week working with the Good Samaritan Water Project in Vale Fiel, Dominican Republic. The group worked to help bring water to a community, which connected approximately 170 people with running water. Partnering with the villages, the Good Samaritan Water Project helps “open the door to health, education, income and a hopefilled future.” They are planning another trip for 2019.

Wenda and Frank Trunzo are starting their next business endeavor.

Historic downtown will soon have a new cornerstone thanks to Frank and Wenda Trunzo. The owners of the beloved Krazy Kup announced on June 21 they have purchased a new building and plan to open a “performance pizzeria.”

The duo will use their unique skills to renovate the building at 201 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., just steps away from their award-winning coffee house. It seems bringing historic buildings back to life will now be part of their legacy. “This will be a metamorphosis, much like Krazy Kup was when we first bought it,” Frank Trunzo said. “It’s a hidden gem. Like Michelangelo said, ‘I have to find what’s inside.’” Years ago when his family was searching for the perfect quaint SEE KRAZY PAGE 4

Maintaining Walden Lake Walden Lake Golf Course will have fresh lawns once more now that a new mowing contractor has been hired to continue caring for the property. City Manager Bill McDaniel said the owner of the company took a tour with the code enforcement manager and has plans to keep the property in tip-top condition. The contractor plans to have at least one member of his team on the course mowing every day to keep up with the large property. Today’s Bank hired the new team to keep the property up to code. During the tour they also realized some of their larger equipment will be unable to access all the locations that need mowing on the property. McDaniel said the city was alerted to several dead trees in front of the country club on Holland Drive. Because of the dead trees’ proximity to the right-ofway, the city removed them on June 26 and cleared the space.

‘Till we meet again’ Plant City’s Joseph Clemons Jr. has lived a life full of adventure. BREANNE WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

P

lant City native Joseph Clemons Jr. will forever be immortalized for his heroic deeds in 1953 at the Battle of Pork Chop Hill in the middle of the Korean War. The young 25-year-old first lieutenant defended the crest of the hill along with a small unit and would eventually be the inspiration for a best-selling book by military historian S.L.A. Marshall. He would later be portrayed by Gregory Peck in the 1959 film “Pork Chop Hill” and continued on in the military, rising to the rank of colonel. He died at his home at age 90 on May 15. His story is legendary but, to those who knew him best, he will forever be known as a heroic man of few words who craved adventure and deeply loved his family. Joseph Clemons Jr. grew up picking strawberries in Plant City. When he was 17 years old he enlisted, was recognized for having a high IQ and was invited to West Point. Though he served through two wars his daughter, Susannah Shultis, said he really didn’t believe in wars and didn’t speak about his experiences until years after he retired, when he began giving interviews and speaking at events. “His military experience was not a large part of my life; either I was too young, don’t remember, or he had retired,” Shultis said. “He was the type of dad who could get the tangles out of your waist-length hair without it hurting.” However, his son, Michael Clemons, said his father’s military background ended up being one of the strongest bonds between the pair. He said he had trouble living with a father who was “all G.I. Joe.” Michael Clemons graduated high school and joined the mili-

“The thing is, he didn’t always talk much, he led by example. He protected us and looked out for us. That’s what I know him as. When we were visiting he would always walk out with his flashlight to make sure whoever came in came in safely and he would always make sure that our cars were OK. He was always watching and making sure. Even when he was sick and couldn’t speak, he was always watching.” — Makana Clemons, granddaughter

tary, serving for years before being involved in a crash at an airshow. He said he didn't even realize how it had affected him until his father asked him how he was doing. They began to talk and his father shared his experience in Korea and explained how he dealt with the repercussions of those nights of service. He helped his son heal and, over the next several years, they continued to bond over their love of flying. He took Michael Clemons back to Plant City and showed him where he grew up. His son remembers being impressed when he took a photo of his dad in front of the Clemons Road sign. As the years passed, Michael Clemons said he realized his father was proud of the man he had become and little meant as much to him as the look on his dad’s face when they talked about flying. “As a teenager, we didn’t get along well, as an adult, he was the most important man in my life and I couldn’t be prouder of him,” Michael Clemons said. His other son, Joseph Clemons III, said his father gave them a life of adventure. After retiring he moved his family to Hawaii, where they stayed for approximately 20 years. One of his 10 grandchildren, Makana Clemons, joked she remembers a phase where he wore a sarong everywhere. He sailed the seas, teaching his children to use Celestial Navigation in the early 70s and eventually owning his own yacht delivery service where he would teach others to sail. Shultis said, growing up in Hawaii, their family was always on the move. They would take a hydroplane to Maui to hitchhike to Haleakala, where they would trek along the crater. A gaggle of Nene geese once got trapped in

their tents. They stumbled upon a naked, flute-playing group of people in an outdoor shower. Her father loved scuba diving and watching the manta rays swim with him as he cleaned the hull of his beloved boat. When he moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, he continued to fish in a small pond by his house. He found his happiness, not in material things, but in relationships, in the memories he made with his loved ones. His grandparents, Lily and Henry Clemons, were some of the first people in Plant City to export oranges. Using mule-pulled wagons, they would transport the fruit to the water and ship them north. Whenever he would visit his first cousin, Gwen Taylor, in Plant City, who became blind at age 40, he would always take her plants. During one visit he noticed a little pink lily on her lanai and she took him to their grandparent’s house where the plant blossomed. He dug up two small plants and took them back to North Carolina where they’ve thrived for 30 years. In honor of his grandmother, lilies have always held a special meaning in his life. His daughter Susannah’s name means “lily” and her Hawaiian middle name is Kalei, which translates to “flower” or “lily.” One day he passed on one of the cherished plants to her. Years later she gave a piece of the Plant City bloom to her daughter, Makana Clemons, keeping the tradition alive. “The thing is, he didn’t always talk much, he led by example,” Makana Clemons said. “He protected us and looked out for us. That’s what I know him as. When we were visiting he would always walk out with his flashlight to make sure whoever came in came in safely and he would always

make sure that our cars were OK. He was always watching and making sure. Even when he was sick and couldn’t speak, he was always watching.” Part of his legacy was his humble and faith-filled nature. He frequently volunteered at this church, staying late to pick up bulletins and going out of his way to pick a man with Alzheimer's so he could make the service. No one but the pastor knew because he believed you should do the right thing out of the goodness of your heart, not for recognition. His memorial service and funeral were full of attendees who celebrated the memories with both laughter and tears. “I miss my dad with my whole heart,” Shultis said. “He was an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. In Hawaii, we say ‘A hui hou,’ or, ‘Till we meet again.’”

building to reform into their cozy and eccentric coffee house he said they had looked at the building at 201 before ending up at their current location at 101 E. J. Arden Mays Blvd. Their new acquisition has a long history with the community and has been the home of everything ranging from a fishing and sporting goods store to a dance hall. Frank Trunzo said he was hit with the vision of creating one of the trendiest pizza joints in the Bay. He envisions dramatic black stripes standing out against the yellow paint, Edison lights bringing a soft glow to the tables, rustic tables nestled throughout the main hall and a counter full of authentic Italian pizza that will offer both dinner and a show. The counter will stretch along the left side of the room, he said, with professional pizza chefs kneading the soft dough and performing impressive tosses out in plain view of the customers. To the front of the room will be a long stage, where he plans to bring some of the finest entertainment in the area to perform for special events at the establishment. “Having a musical family, it has always been important to us to

NITRO PLEASE Krazy Kup is now serving nitro cold brew coffee. The fad is taking the country by storm as coffee houses introduce the brewing system into the inventory. The coffee, often called “nitro” or “nitrobrew,” is coffee infused with nitrogen. The cold-brew coffee is infused with nitrogen gas that is released through a pressurized valve full of small holes. The pressure continues to build, forcing the coffee past a disc, which causes it to come out smooth and creamy. It’s strong, it’s refreshing and it should never be served over ice. As the coffee settles it cascades around the cup, shooting dark tendrils of black coffee through the frothy head until it settles as one dark cup of frigid joe. You can add flavoring if you’d like, but coffee diehards will throughly enjoy drinking it straight from the tap. It has a velvety texture and leaves little to

no aftertaste. Krazy Kup has one five-gallon barrel in the store and two kegs in its truck, which owner Frank Trunzo said he plans to have cruising the streets soon. A 12 oz cup is $4.75, a medium is $5.75 and a large is $6.75. The coffee is concentrated so most prefer the smaller size. It can also be served as a nitro-shake, which includes a scoop of ice cream. It takes anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to brew a fresh batch so come in early to ensure you get a cup before it’s gone.

“We really believe if we do this right we will have them coming from Lakeland, Brandon, Tampa, you name it. That opens the door to bringing more people to our downtown, to have them check out our other businesses. We’re really excited to see what could come from this.” — Frank Trunzo

bring good, quality performances to Plant City,” Frank Trunzo said. “But we’re not going to be strictly music, we’re going to be entertainment. We’ll feature some of Plant City’s finest talents and we’ll hopefully bring bands back that at one time where huge but that may not be performing much anymore. We’ll have doowop, bluegrass, comedians, it will always be G-rated because everything we do is family-friendly. I see the whole thing.” The Trunzos have developed the reputation in Plant City of being avant-garde pioneers. When they began refurbishing Krazy Kup they used Frank Trunzo’s background as an awardwinning auctioneer and Wenda Trunzo’s vision and experience to craft one of the most unique establishments in Tampa Bay. Over the past several years they’ve become a staple in the community and have won Reader’s Choice Best Coffee for five years running, the Best of Plant City City Beautification award, the Best of Plant City Entrepreneur of the Year award and were the 2018 Business of the Year. They have owned multiple businesses over the course of their lives and never start a new one without doing immense research. When they decided to open a coffee house he and Wenda Trunzo went to practically every coffee farm in Hawaii to find the perfect bean to sell in their beverages. Frank Trunzo said that same dedication will be used while they search for the perfect recipe to use for their Italian pizzas. This isn’t a spur of the moment decision, his family has been planning this restaurant for years. As their ideas slowly fell into place they began waiting for the perfect opportunity to transition their dreams into reality. They have already toured nearly all of the popular establishments in the Tampa Bay area and plan to make Plant City a culinary destination that people will travel from all over to enjoy. Much is still in the planning phase, however, he said he believes they will have both a brick oven and conventional ovens cooking the pizzas. The counter will serve as means for simple and fast take-away meals as well as for preparing for dinein customers. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner most days of the week, including the weekend. Frank Trunzo jokes the motto will be “Pizza, wine, beer and cheer served here.” He said if all goes perfectly, they may be able to open in 12 to 18 months. They are building it out on their own, much like they did with Krazy Kup, so that timeline may be slightly delayed as renovations get underway. It’s a daunting task, but one the Trunzos are ready to begin. “It’s our legacy,” Frank Trunzo said. “It’s contributing to the community. We believe in Plant City and this is the last historic commercial building downtown. That’s the end of it right there. We feel like we’re a cornerstone. We’re in love with the whole idea.”

Loyalty is essential to developing a following. If customers feel like they know you and they know your business they are more likely to stop in than they would be if they were simply strolling by. Making one’s website SEO (Search Engine Optimization) friendly, using words and phrasing to make it easy to find online, will help draw traffic to the site. Social media then comes into play to bridge the gap between businesses and visitors. Vicky

Saunders, owner of Instagramers of Plant City, is in charge of multiple local businesses’ social accounts. She said they are most effective when the site is used to form a virtual community. Consistency is key. If a business is going to create an online presence it is crucial they post three to five times a week. “Look at the post’s insights as you go to figure out what time or format works best,” Saunders said. “Social media is forgiving for experimentation. Play around and figure out what schedule works best for your community and then stay consistent.” Typically the best times to post are early in the morning, around noon and then around 5 p.m. This allows people to see your content immediately when they check before and after work and during their lunch breaks. Researching what competitors and similar brands are doing is a great way to come up with innovative ideas to add your own spin on a successful tactic. It also isn’t necessary to have a presence on every site. If your business sells things that benefit predominately from photos, use Instagram. If you’re more geared toward customer service or customer inter-

According to Locowise, a social media performance measurement company, videos have become the most effective way to reach audiences. The average video on Facebook in April 2017 reached 12.05% of the total page audience. Photos reached 11.63%,

and making sure their collective brands showcased the diverse and blossoming culture found in the strawberry town. Social media is a virtual community so many successful businesses use the platform to share not only their own content but that of neighboring businesses, customers’ posts, news that is relatable to their industry and more. Saunders said simple steps like making sure your posts are short and concise, having good art and interacting with people who visit your business can make a huge difference in establishing your brand. Keep social media neat and tight and send people to a website or blog for more information. “There’s this analogy that using social media correctly is a lot like dating,” Saunders said. “Don’t just talk about yourself, relationships take time, don’t overdo it, don’t under-do it, be yourself, it’s OK to be funny sometimes and never be hateful or ‘diss’ on anyone. Make it a conversation, not a lecture and you’ll soon have great interactions with your community.”

tion of another child. They began preparations to add on another room before Allen’s water broke unexpectedly on January 15. She was only at 28 weeks. The doctors chose to keep Demi in the womb, but she developed a severe lung infection and was taken to the NICU immediately after she was delivered, separated from her mother for a full 24 hours. In her letter, Allen wrote she fell to her knees in the hospital praying to God to either heal her child or to take Allen instead. Demi was on a ventilator, covered in IVs and weighed a mere three pounds and 15.5 ounces. The doctors repeatedly told Allen and Dean Benzel their daughter would more than likely not survive. Then they found a grade four brain bleed and said she would never walk. For three months Allen said she would return home crying anxious over the fate of her baby. But the strength and resilience of young Demi never abated and she continued to grow. Despite her cerebral palsy, two and a half years later she is walking thanks to intense physical therapy. “There were days that I just wanted to give up,” Allen said. “But she just kept fighting. She taught me how to be strong. She is doing what she shouldn’t be able to do. She’s my hero.” The family’s life is filled with doctor appointments but Demi, her sister Piper Patisaul and brother Kolby Benzel are three of the happiest children around. Demi shares a room with Piper and Opliger said she was thrilled to have the honor of designing a room that would be cherished by not one, but two children.

Sidelines PC fighters win at Battle of Atlanta

WITH ZACH HILFERDING

Local karate practicioners “Rhino” Mike Thomas and Abijah “Atomic Bomb” Johnson performed well at the 2018 Battle of Atlanta event, held June 14-16 in Atlanta, Georgia. Thomas, a third-degree brown belt, won first place in his weight class in the Ring Combat Fighting Arts International kickboxing men’s brown/black belt division and in points sparring. Johnson, a purple belt competing at the men’s intermediate level, finished second in points sparring and third in kata. Both men represented the Rogers Nisei Karate Federation and will compete in the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships at Walt Disney World from July 5-7.

Working as a referee can be a good side job for those starting out and a lucrative gig at higher levels. JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Before Plant City Family YMCA Executive Director Zach Hilferding went full time with his current position, he spent years refereeing sporting events and worked with people who made it as far as college sports and the NBA’s G-League. He hopes to see more young people get involved with officiating and is willing to help make it happen. How did you get your start? I started when I was in my late twenties, maybe closer to 30. With the YMCA, we got to partner with the (Sarasota) basketball association. That’s how I got to know those guys. Little did I know, I had a chance to make a little bit of dollars. It was a nice little side job. My grandmother told me one time to stop acting like a kid and that I would never make money with basketball. I didn’t make it to Europe and play like I was hoping I could, but then I turned it and flipped it into a part-time job where I did make money. It can become a very lucrative part-time job for somebody. For kids in high school it can be their full-time job and they can go season to season.

Karate club goes to AAU nationals Chris Welbon Karate’s team is looking to add to its record-breaking season resume in this week’s event. JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

No matter what happens at this week’s 2018 AAU Karate National Championships, this season has been historically good for the Chris Welbon Karate Clubs team. The 2018 season has seen the 37-person squad claim 299 medals over five tournaments — 64 more than the 2016 season, when the club won 235 with AAU

nationals included. This week, the club has sent 25 of its 35 members to Fort Lauderdale for the last major event of its season. The dojo also claims a record 13 state champions this year. “Everybody’s raised their game up this year,” head coach Brian Warren said. “There’s been improvements across the board.” Moving the dojo from a rented space on Collins Street to its current Mobley Street location has

been a boon for the competitive team, which now has far more space to work with and plans to implement an offseason conditioning and training program to keep everyone in competition shape year-round. It also benefited from good health early in the season, which made a big impact on team performance in the Jan. 27 opening weekend tournament — the team won a season-high 64 medals. “Our mentality was, ‘We’re not going to warm up. We’re going to win that tournament.’ That Justin Kline

was our best tournament for the whole Florida season,” Warren said. “I thought we pushed the kids hard right away.” Though the group has dealt with its fair share of injuries all season, from simple sprains and bruises to a broken leg, Warren said this year’s members have been focused, coachable and willing to work hard. “It’s been a blast, having a big team,” Warren said. “Everybody gets along good. Parents are all working together to fundraise. We all meshed really well together this year, which is good to see.” Warren and Welbon have praised members such as Audrey Woolever, who became a kobudo state champion and nearly won her kata division, and Trinity Goodson, who the coaches said has made great progress since January and will compete in the 9-10 female beginner kata division in this week’s tournament. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is to believe in yourself and have self-confidence,” Goodson said. Nationals begin today and will be held through June 30 at the Broward County Convention Center.

you never know what opportunities will be available. I watched a young man named Johnny Atanasov, he made three, four thousand dollars in his first season because your availability’s wide open. You can do three games right in a row. That’s a heck of a great day for a young person. You’re out there learning customer service, conflict management, conflict resolution, think on your feet, live by the black and white rules and have a good time. I think it teaches a lot of life skills and management skills, as well. You’re supposed to be in charge of the game and you have to make sure everything’s in a good flow, limited injuries, limited attitude, stuff like that. People don’t often realize how difficult the job is, do they? A lot of times, it’s very intimidating. People think it’s easy. Everybody thinks reffing’s easy. Me, too. I was the first person to admit the reason I am here is because I did not like referees. I thought they did a very poor job and I thought that I could do better. I think it’s a young ego-filled thought process, but when you come from playing the game, that’s how you feel about referees. “How could you miss him slapping me on the arm? It was pretty obvious because I felt it, hard.” Then you go and referee,

and that swipe comes so fast I can’t tell if that person was hit or not. We all miss calls. That’s part of it. But your attitude and your effort can be seen by a lot of people. Is there a big advantage in having played sports before officiating them? I feel that we need more young kids that played the sport to referee those sports. I feel like I had a slight edge because I played so many years of basketball…I knew what players were going to do before they would do it. I knew the tricks of the bumps, touches and run-bys, tips of the elbow and stuff like that — I kind of had an idea of what would happen because I knew what I would do in those situations and I had also been in those situations. I don’t want to discourage a young person who doesn’t play sports, but if they have an idea that they want to be an official, you’d better go play that sport at least for fun. You’ve worked with kids at the YMCA who went on to have success in the field. How do kids get their foot in the door with their local YMCA or referees’ association? They first stepped up to the plate. These kids were in the gym already, shooting around in open gym. They came to me and said, “Can we help referee kids’ basketball games? We’d like to help.” The biggest thing I tell people is you’ve got to come out of your comfort zone and

say, “Hey, can I?” When you start feeling confident about yourself you study it, you take it serious, you start getting better. You try to give it your all. You show up to camps, you show up to meetings. Come in, get involved, be involved. West Coast Officials Association in Tampa is a bigger one. Durant, Plant City, Strawberry Crest games are officiated by the WCOA. You have to not be scared to show up. You have to not be afraid to go in and talk to somebody. If you have interest, I am open. Feel free to email me (zach.Hilferding@TampaYMCA. Org). One of the things I love is the fact we’ve been able to teach kids what opportunities are out there. If kids do take it and run with it, good things can happen.

This week’s Crossword answers

What do referees do when they’re not working a game? Refereeing requires time and commitment and weeklong camps, but I leave and drive my own vehicle and arrive to the game. I’m in, I’m out, I get paid, I enjoy it, I have a good time. I still have to break down film. A lot of people will stop to eat for half an hour and break down film, or it’s definitely the next day. Many of us have had so many long phone calls after games are over about one or two situational calls. “What would you do here? What did you see? Here’s what I thought I saw. What was your angle?” To read the full interview, visit

It’s Summer. It’s Florida. It’s H-O-T. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can cause serious illness and even death. When your active lifestyle brings you outdoors in this summer heat, here are some ways to enjoy it safely. Keep yourself hydrated. Drink a glass or two of water before you go out, and then sip water every 15-20 minutes throughout your activity, even if you are not feeling thirsty. When you are finished, continue to drink water. When you sweat, your body not only loses water, but electrolytes and salt. You can replace those by alternating water intake with a sports drink like Gatorade, especially if your activity keeps you outdoors for more than an hour. There are many other electrolyte replacements on the market, from sports drinks to tablets, sports chews and supplements. Read the ingredients and choose one that is natural. Protect your skin. Wear sunblock and choose a shaded path to walk, bike or run or for all or part of your workout.

Time of day is important when running or doing any kind of exercise outdoors. Avoid training in the daytime heat. Here in Florida, the best time of day to workout is early morning, but if you are not an early riser, stay out of the midday sun by heading out in the evening. Dress in light-colored clothing to reflect the sunlight. Loosefitting clothing will also keep you feeling cooler as it allows for more airflow. Most importantly, listen to your body. Common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration include dizziness, headache, cramping, and nausea or vomiting. Stop immediately if you are feeling any of those symptoms. Move indoors where it is cool or find a shaded area. Apply any kind of cooling method, such as a cool towel or fan. t the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Business After Hours event, members hit the streets of downtown in a scavenger hunt among local businesses. This month’s event was held at Aromatic Harmony, 110 E. Reynolds St. Suite 300. The group designed a scavenger hunt that had participants head toward businesses like Peace of Plant City, Adryana’s Latin & Italian Cuisine, Brick City Bricks, Strawberry Tap and Magnolia Insurance. At each location they had a new challenge ranging from “count the number of R2-D2’s” to “take a selfie with the new mural.” Once completed the participant was entered into a drawing for three prizes. — BREANNE WILLIAMS

Why go to an emergency center that’s connected to a hospital? What if you need the rest of the hospital? When it comes to your health, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Which is why during an emergency such as a stroke or heart attack, every second counts. We don’t want to risk our patients’ lives by transferring them to a different hospital for emergency surgery. Here, if you need to be rushed to surgery, it’s down the hall, not down the road. We also have access to cutting-edge equipment and some of the best doctors, nurses and specialists in the region are only a few feet away. If you need a pint of blood, no problem, we’re connected to a blood bank. Not to mention that our rehabilitation, orthopedic, oncology and maternity departments are only a wheelchair ride away. The best place to go during your emergency is a facility designed to handle any emergency. And that’s right here at BayCare’s South Florida Baptist Hospital.
