Case Contracting celebrates 35 years If you’ve driven through Plant City, you’ve undoubtedly come across a building erected by Case Contracting Company. BREANNE WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

Case Contracting Company has established itself as one of the most respected businesses in the industry. It is now celebrating 35 years of service to the commu-

nity and the state its owners hold so dear. The brainchild of Charles “Chuck” Christensen, Case helped shape not only Plant City, but Florida as a whole into an iconic destination for locals and tourists alike. Christensen was born and raised in Miami Springs where he grew up racing cars, fishing in the Everglades and learning from his father, who was an electrician. After receiving his degree in Civil Engineering Technology, he spent the next 14 years working SEE CASE PAGE 4

Lake Walden Square shopping center has a new owner. Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P. (HFF) announced on Wednesday the 244,529 square-foot center sold for $29 million to JBL Asset Management. The diverse shopping plaza, found at the intersection of W. Alexander St. and James L. Redman Pkwy., is home to businesses including Winn-Dixie, Marshalls, Michaels and Ulta Beauty. “The Tampa MSA continues to be high on the list for Florida retail investors,” Director Eric Williams said in a news release. “The strong surrounding economic demand drivers along the thriving I-4 corridor coupled with a bestin-class anchor lineup and strong tenant sales performance attracted investors to Lake Walden Square.” The plaza is a dominant retail location for Plant City and HFF said more than 38,967 residents that earn an average income of $68,173 are living within a threemile radius of the center.

A night to remember Plant City has a new bed and breakfast that is rich in history and offers an unique aesthetic customers will not soon forget. JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Theresa Clinton wants to ensure that if you stay even one night at the Sparkman House Luxury Bed & Breakfast you’ll never forget the experience. Clinton and her husband, Ken, purchased the Queen Anne style home in Plant City’s Historic Downtown district with the intent of turning it into a bed and breakfast and have spent more than nine months working on it until it hit their desired balance of luxury and local history. The home was built in 1905 as a single-story building and when John Gadsden Sparkman bought it in 1910 the second floor was added on. Though previous owners of the home have made improvements throughout the house, including the kitchen and library areas, Clinton said many of the home’s original features from 1910 are still present and intact. The Clintons wanted to keep as many of the original features as possible in place to preserve the history of the home and give it its own distinct feel. “I want to be able to share the beauty and the story of this home with other people,” Clinton said. It features five unique bedrooms and a detached carriage house suite for rent, as well as a covered outdoor patio area and a small second-floor “morning deck” set up for two guests to sit. Three-course breakfasts are served in the converted Florida room and guests can also enjoy time in a sitting room, library area and a large porch. The Victorianthemed decor, with many handmade pieces of furniture, gives the Sparkman House a classic luxury feel, but it’s still friendly to modern times — the house has been wired for surround sound should anyone need to use the speakers, several of the beds have headboards equipped with hidden USB chargers and reading lights and the mattresses and pillows have memory foam. “When we went ahead and did this, we wanted to do this right,” Clinton said. “We knew we wanted to be a little bit, a step above the average bed and breakfast.” Clinton is interested in learning all about the history behind the home and the Sparkman family, so she’s invited several family members to the property and is going to the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center to find more information and pictures. She has a blank wall reserved for any pictures she finds of the Sparkman family and house’s past, save for a large photo of John G. Sparkman that now resides on the sitting room’s coffee table. One thing Clinton is particularly excited about is the Sparkman House’s potential as an event venue. A gazebo area in the

BOOKING Rooms at the Sparkman House start at $149 per night and all guests can eat a three-course breakfast in the morning. Guests staying in the Carriage House Suite can request breakfast to be brought to their room if they wish. The Sparkman House allows weddings and other events using the facility to choose their own catering, photographers and other services. “We want to set ourselves apart as a venue from a lot of the other venues…here, at the Sparkman House, you have options,” Theresa Clinton said. “Let me listen to what it is you’re wanting and needing and we’ll customize it to that.” To book a room or get more information, call 813787-6068 or email info@ sparkmanhouse.com. It's located at 707 N. Collins St., two blocks north of the 1914 Community Center. The Sparkman House has its own Facebook page, facebook.com/TheSparkmanHouseLuxuryBedAndBreakfast. front yard has been outfitted with lighting and decor for special occasions, but its chief potential is as a wedding spot for up to 80 people. Any part of the Sparkman House not already occupied by guests is available for wedding parties to use and brides can get ready for their big days in the innkeepers’ master suite, which comes with a dress-ready mannequin, large bathroom and walkin closet. Clinton said weddings and special occasions are already being booked and that she’d like for the Sparkman House to have a presence in local festivals and other events beyond being a place for people to stay. The Sparkman House held its grand opening ceremony on July 14 and had its first overnight guest shortly afterward. Now that the operation is up and running, Clinton hopes the business’s attention to detail and luxury features will make the home the most desirable place to stay in Plant City. “I want the Sparkman House Luxury Bed & Breakfast to become an icon in Plant City,” Clinton said. “When people think of Plant City, I don’t want them just to think of the Strawberry Festival and the strawberry fields. I also want them to think of the Sparkman House and say, ‘You’ve got to stay there.’”

his way up from a project engineer to Vice President of Estimating at Frank J. Rooney. He became an expert in his field and when the time came to start his own business, he knew just where he wanted to plant his roots. “Plant City is a great place,” Christensen said. “Of course it’s changed a lot from when we first came. Nettie (Berry Draughon) and Sadye (Gibbs Martin) and others, there were just a lot of great people here… if there was a high school event going on, a football game, basketball game or whatever it was on Al Berry and Ercelle Smith’s radio show. You would go in people’s house and they’d have it on. That’s just the way the whole town was.” It made sense economically as well. Plant City was right along I-4 and just minutes away from the I-75 and I-275 connections. Building Case on Turkey Creek Road put them at Florida’s main artery, easily branching out to the entire state with just a quick hop onto the interstate. Over the years, Christensen has been president of Kiwanis Club and ABC, served on the Chamber of Commerce’s board several times and helped do repairs around town on beloved destinations like the train depot. He loves his town and said he is very pleased to call it home. Before they erected the building at Turkey Creek Road, Case began with a plan table in Christensen’s garage. He had made many contacts in his former occupation including Harvey Teitelbaum, a concrete sub from Chicago. Together they were able to land their first job, building a Marriott in Orlando. Soon after he reached out to Tim Walker, who he had gotten to know during his former career. Walker said when presented with the opportunity to be a part of Christensen’s vision, he jumped at the chance and quickly came on board. “He was known for his work ethic and his honesty,” Walker said. “We both believe that if you’re going to do anything, do it well. That’s something everyone in our company lives by.” After working side-by-side for so many decades, Christensen moved to the position of CEO in 2008, making Walker president of Case. Over the years they built some of the most beloved buildings in the state. In Plant City, Case built the old First Baptist Church on Palmer Street, the stage at the Florida Strawberry Festival, Plant City Stadium and the local Walmart. Their partnership with Walmart shot Case into retail.

They are responsible for building and renovating Walmarts all across the state. They’ve built schools, heath care and government buildings, churches and colleges. Plant City Stadium also opened the door for Case to branch into sports. Soon it tackled a variety of other stadiums like George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter and more. “You’re only as good as your last job,” Christensen said. “You can be in business for 50 years and on your 51st year do a bad job, and that’s all you’ll be known for. Make every job your best one.” That work ethic is something Christensen requires of all of his employees. In return, they pour everything they have into their staff. They treat employees like family and as a result have an extremely low turnover. Most stay with the company an average of 14 years with many making it a lifetime career. Christensen said he tries to hire young employees so he can develop them over the years. He prides Case on having a good mix of “youth and maturity,” which he said will carry the company on as the younger workers age and begin to take over the leadership roles in the business. “Your people are your greatest assets,” Christensen said. “Case is a service company, we don’t have machines in our warehouse punching out what we’re selling. Our employees, our people are our assets. They are Case.” Even though Case has struggled during the multiple recessions the country has undergone, it has always persevered thanks to the expertise of its leaders and the dedication of its employees. “We’ve never owed anybody any money,” Christensen said. “We never bought anything we couldn’t afford. That’s something not a lot of people can say. When things get rough, the contractors that usually find themselves struggling are those that are still making payments on equipment or loans even though they are struggling to find work.” Case has left a lasting impact on Florida over the last several decades and Walker said they have often been asked to expand out to other states. However, Florida is their home and they agreed it was diverse enough to hold their interest. “We came from a very large commercial contractor,” Walker said. “We don’t want to be the biggest, but we want to manage and be the best at what we do… We are not Gucci shoed, we don’t fly in a Learjet. We give everybody the quality they deserve.”

Though the upcoming school year is far from the minds of the nearly 200,000 children returning to class in Hillsborough County, parents are beginning to tackle the annual checklist of preparations needed for the first day of school. The new school year starts August 10 and South Florida Baptist Hospital is making parents’ lives easier by once again joining the Hillsborough County Back to School Coalition to offer free physicals and school-required immunizations. On July 21, any new students to Florida schools in grades K through 12 can come with their parent or legal guardian to the Swindle Medical Arts Center, 1601 W. Timberlane Drive, to take part in the event. “The hospital sees it as a community benefit,” Heather Coats, supervisor of community health, said. “That’s why it’s important that we are part of the Hillsborough County Back to School Coalition. I personally have been coordinating this event since 2007.” The physicals offered are required school screenings that include checking vision, blood pressure, height and weight. This does not include the sports, Head Start and child care physicals. Free school-required immunizations will also be available for uninsured children and parents need to bring an immunization record so the student can receive the shots. Coats said it is important parents register in advance for the event at back2schoolfair.org. There are more than 150 appoint-

ments available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The deadline to register is Friday, July 20 by the end of the workday. The immunizations are offered thanks to a partnership with St. Joseph’s Children’s Wellness and Safety Center. Students will only need to go through this process when they first enroll in a Florida school and again when they enter seventh grade, Coats said. The annual event allows all families to have the necessary school health screenings required to start school on time, regardless of if the child is insured or not. Those with insurance have these services covered and can go to their normal doctor or pediatrician. This is the first of the 2018 events hosted by the Hillsborough County Back to School Coalition. Coats warned that the longer you wait to attend an event, the faster they fill up. She said historically at the Plant City event families rarely wait longer than an hour or an hour and a half, and when they are through they walk away with all the paperwork they will need to sign up for school. The event is also much more than just a physical and immunization check. Thanks to partnerships with the community with groups like the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Plant City, Suncoast Community Health Center and Healthy Start Coalition, the day is transformed into a onestop-shop. The children will all be provided with free book bags and school supplies as well as get a variety of resources for family readiness. Publix also helps sponsor the event and opens its stores in Plant City for a back-to-school drive where customers can donate school supplies to help the Coalition. There will also be information available through the Health Care Navigators on how to acquire health insurance for the children, as well as further assistance like tutoring for children who may struggle through school.

North Park Isles has seen its fair share of twists and turns. Originally approved by city commissioners in 2006, the district was modified again in 2016. However, there has not been any development on the site. Last month, city commissioners approved the addition of land, which took the former 397 acres up to 460 acres and increased the potential number of residential units from 1,219 to 1,350. Because of the land addition it is going back before the city commission to dissolve its current district in one vote and to establish a new district, which will include the new land, in another vote. Commissioners agreed on July 9 to set up the public hearings on the vote that is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, in City Hall. The establishment of the North Park Isles Community Development District means that the developer can “obtain low financing by issuing tax-exempt bonds to finance the construction of infrastructure,” according to the city. CDDs are local, special-purpose government frameworks that act as alternatives to

municipal incorporations. North Park Isles is located north of Sam Allen Road and Park Road. In 2014, the single-family homes in the district were priced to be around $225,000 to $235,000. Part of the concern for the area was of the original 397 acres, 163 acres were wetlands and 106 acres were upland forests. The two public hearings on the North Park Isles district should be back-to-back during Monday night’s meeting. City commissioners will also hold a public hearing on an ordinance that would grant tax exemptions for Materials Lifecycle Management Company of Tampa, LLC (MLMC). The Florida Constitution allows local governments to grant Economic Development Ad Valorem Tax Exemptions to new businesses expansions of qualifying businesses via the approval of a referendum. In 2010, 68% of Plant City voters approved the referendum so that in 2011 commissioners could create the ordinance to grant exemptions from here on out. Basically, the MLMC said it would employ at least 45 new full-time equivalent employees in the new business and it is asking for the ordinance to allow it to have Tier II benefits. The improvements are anticipated to take place on or after the year 2021. If approved, the exemption remains in effect for seven years from the year the improvements are added. For more information on the upcoming meeting and other items that will be included, check out plantcity.civicweb.net on Friday for the released agenda.

SPORTS WHAT’S ON KLINE’S MIND? JUSTIN KLINE

Further up the “ropes” I chose personal training for this month’s Learning the Ropes feature because it’s a fulfilling line of work that gives you the power to do whatever you want. Just remember what Uncle Ben Parker famously told his nephew, Peter Parker: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Peter became Spider-Man; you can become a responsible trainer. A large part of your job will consist of discovering what works for your clients and helping them achieve their goals that way. You’ll instruct them in the gym or at home, and you may even recommend products they can try in or out of a workout to help them out. That’s where I want you to be careful. It’s not that there aren’t any safe, effective fitness products and supplements out there. You can walk into a Southern Muscle or GNC or similar shop and buy things that actually work as advertised. While I can’t stop you from doing this, I just hope nobody who reads the feature and decides to go down this path plans to hawk the popular placebo products seen in many of the multi-level marketing schemes (which happen to be shaped like pyramids) people clog your Facebook feed with every day. Many of these things either don’t work as advertised or don’t do anything but make you think they’re working. I’ve written about this in the past, but it bears repeating. I hate seeing people buy into scams not knowing or not caring that they only exist for some schmuck at the top of a pyramid to make a bunch of money off of them and everyone who sold a product and recruited X number of people to sell as required. Before you recommend something, please do your research to make sure these things actually work. There are companies out there that claim their stuff’s scientifically proven to work and can provide studies, but here’s the kicker: those are bought and paid for. People were hired to give the appearance of “outside confirmation” that these products really work, but following the money says otherwise. Look for independent studies instead — anything not financed by the company whose products are the focus of a study. If you can’t find anything online, ask your doctor about a product’s listed ingredients and whether it could actually work.

LEARNING THE ROPES

PERSONAL TRAINING

Certified personal trainers have a wealth of career options available to them. JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Jim Fish is certified by the National Federation of Professional Trainers and primarily works with clients at Power Shop Fitness in downtown Plant City, which he also helps manage. For him, personal training is a dream job — he gets to stay physically active and help others meet their goals, whether they’re training for athletic events or just want a “beach body.” Certified personal trainers can mold programs around their personalities and create a unique, gainful experience for their clients. Learning the Ropes is an educational series for high school students, college students or adults who wish to work in the sports world. Not everyone can be an all-star pro athlete, but there are plenty of ways to work in the sports you love. What made you want to become a personal trainer?

It was a way for me to continue my career in bodybuilding, a way for me to stay competitive, stay in good shape. That’s what led me into it. Turns out, it’s a great career. You have to do what you love in life and I’m doing my passion, so it never feels like work to me. How do you get started? There are a lot of personal training certifications out there. You research, look at who you want to get approved through. There’s online courses that you can take. It doesn’t happen overnight. Those top ones are gonna require a lot more work. There’s a lot of physiology involved. You want to be educated in nutrition because nutrition is a huge part of your training. It’s not just lifting — there’s a lot of different things to learn within it. For somebody getting started, they have to realize you really have to have a passion

for it. I recommend to anybody, if they’re gonna do it, they should be training also. You can’t just learn this out of a book…you have to have practical experience. You’ve got to do it yourself and live it yourself. If you have a passion for that, people sense that. If you really know what you’re doing, people sense that. How long can it take to get certified? For mine, for instance, you can do it online, there’s no real time limit on it. If you’re good, you really know all your stuff and you can go through the material, you can probably get your certification in six months. Even after the tests online, you then have to go to a national testing center just like you would for a nursing degree or your broker’s degree, sit down and take an actual test. There are personal training certifications that will let you do all your tests online, but they’re not all accredited. That’s the difference. It’s the easy way out. I really, highly recommend anyone goes with an accredited personal training group. If you’re gonna do this and you’re really passionate about this, why not do this right and get the right things? With somebody who’s accredited and has good experience, that does allow your career path to go in a number of different ways. What are some of the differences between these organizations? A lot of people want to look at what’s the easiest way to get it. That’s human nature. I would suggest that you look at the different ones. I’m with the NFPT. I did a lot of research before I chose who I was gonna go to. Number one, you want to go with an accredited personal training place. If it’s not accredited, I’m gonna say don’t waste your time. Look at other trainers that are really successful and look at what certifications they have. Also, I recommend to somebody who’s really thinking about doing it to go find some experienced trainers, good trainers, and talk to them. See who they’re certified through. See what they do. PCHS Special Olympics basketball team places fourth in Seattle Plant City’s squad, representing Florida, played in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games. JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Earlier this month, Plant City High School’s Special Olympics Unified basketball team stood out in Seattle. The team competed in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games, held July 1-6 at the University of Washington, and placed fourth overall in the Unified 02 division. Though the PCHS group couldn’t recapture the magic of the team’s 2014 season, when it won gold at

the USA Games in New Jersey, the team played hard and had a good time. “It was good,” athlete Devin Amerson said. “We did awesome in the games and it was really good.” The team stayed on UW’s campus and got all kinds of hookups from sponsors, including two new pairs of Nike basketball sneakers and a new pair of Brooks Running shoes. Team members also got to walk all around Seattle, someCourtesy of Kim Levins

What are some of the costs associated with personal training? For mine, I have to get CECs every year. I have to re-apply and pay for my license every year. You have to have insurance. As an independent trainer, if you don’t have the finances behind you, it can be kind of tough. What kind of earnings potential do you have as a trainer? You can make really good money as a trainer. This is a growing field. You can go travel anywhere if you’re good and get hired. But to break into it, don’t expect to make much money in the beginning. It’s not gonna happen. You could do it on your own, which pretty much is what I do as a self-employed trainer. A lot of people starting out — and this is not bad — get with a corporationtype club where they have club trainers. If you’re brand new, an inexperienced trainer, that gives you some discipline into the training. It brings to you readymade clients, too. You don’t have

to go out and pursue your own clients. More likely than not, you’re gonna get a base hourly income. The downside to a lot of those places is you can’t really lay out your own routines, be yourself. You’re going to be limited to a split because the club’s going to take a big portion of your training money. But it’s a great starting point to get you going, get you immersed in the field, see that you really like it and you get more well-known, if your ambition is to go out on your own. There’s some trainers that stay as club trainers and end up making really good money. It depends on the type of club you’re with. If you do it with a passion and a love, the money comes. As an independent trainer, recruiting is one of the most important parts of your job. What’s the best way for someone on their own to build their client base? Word of mouth and people seeing you. If you’re passionate, you care, your client is inevitably gonna talk to other people. Also, other people around when they see you training, they’re apt to it. That’s how I get a lot of my clients. They’ll say, ‘Hey, Steve

or Jeff or Sue told me about you, they said you do this and that.’ If you want to be a good trainer, people need to look at you and say, ‘Oh yeah, that guy or that girl knows what they’re doing. They’re obviously following what they’re teaching.’ Not every trainer has to be a competitive bodybuilder or some high-level athlete, but be in shape. Have a passion for it. When you sit down with a new client, how do you start planning for them? I always offer everybody a free consultation. I’ll sit down with them, give them a free body fat assessment with calipers. I’ll really go in-depth about what their goals are and I also let them know, if they’re gonna go on with me, they’d better truly want it. I am not an easy trainer. I don’t want somebody signing up with me and, all of a sudden, they find out three sessions into it they don’t like this. I go really in-depth with them on what to expect. Any of your clients’ goals, you should far exceed that for them. I really want to know what they want and what they’re looking at. If they’re looking at, if their big goal in life is a seven out of 10 for what they

want to do, I’m gonna give them the 10. How often do you recommend supplements or training equipment for clients, if at all? I get that question all the time, probably on a daily basis. My biggest thing that I tell people is, I’m a firm believer in a protein supplementation. I don’t care what you eat and how good you eat, you really don’t get enough protein in your diet without supplementing it with, say, a protein powder. The only other thing I recommend is branch chain amino acids. They are essential in your training. You can’t get branch chain amino acids from anything you eat, they’re not naturally produced in your body and the effects of them are monumental. All the other stuff, you’re starting to toss money out the window and I don’t want to see anyone do that. For the average person, they don’t even train hard enough to really warrant getting all that other stuff for the effects of it. There’s so much out there that’s not regulated by the FDA or anything, so they can come out and say lots of different things, promise you lots of different things.

times logging five miles a day, to check out attractions like the famous Space Needle. Head coach Lisa Goad said the team was thankful for the support it got from the Plant City community and PCHS. Principal Susan Sullivan even flew out to Seattle for the week to cheer the team on. “I love those kids, so I decided to go. We told them if they won, I’d take them out for ice cream,” Sullivan said. “They didn’t win but played really hard, they only lost by one point (28-27 versus Alaska in the final round), so I told the coach, ‘I think they deserve ice cream.’” Their performance at the USA Games gave the players a confidence boost heading into the next Special Olympics season and they’re getting ready for sports such as bowling, softball and swimming. Everyone left Seattle with heads held high and medals to show for their hard work. “The kids did awesome,” Goad said. “I was very proud of the kids.”

Maggie Pate wrapped up the month of June on a high note, winning first place in the Girls’ 18 Singles division at the USTA National Level 2 tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At press time, the Durant High School student was in Charleston, South Carolina competing in the UTSA Girls’ National Clay Court Championships. How are the clay courts treating you this week? It’s definitely a tough environment to play in. You’re playing against some of the top girls in the country. It’s stiff competition. It’s a grind, but I do feel like I’m prepared for it. You did pretty well on the hard courts at Level 2 Nationals and this is a totally different playing surface. How do you adjust, going from one surface to another? Going from hard to clay, clay’s longer points. It’s more taxing. Hard, the points are quicker. I practice on clay and hard. I was able to practice on clay leading up to this, so I feel pretty good.

Know someone who deserves an Athlete of the Week feature? Email Justin Kline at JKline@plantcityobserver.com by the Friday before the next issue.

How were you feeling going into Level 2? Looking at your scores, seems like just about everything was working for you. Going in, I felt pretty confident in myself and how I was playing. I was ready to go out and do whatever I had to to win. I played girls where the game styles were completely different, so I had to adjust to each. What’s your favorite subject in school? Probably history and English.

Which surface do you like playing on the most? I don’t know, actually. Clay may suit my game style better because I’m more of a defensive player, but both are fine.

O

peration Homefront threw a star-spangled baby shower at the American Legion Post 26 in Plant City on July 14. New or soon-to-be military mothers signed up online and were invited to the party. At the event they received a free basket full of gifts for the children and were able to connect to a variety of groups and organizations that offer educational information and benefits for their family. The baskets were full of donated items like handmade quilts from the group at Fred's Market Restaurant, books, toys and more. Though Operation Homefront frequently provides the baby showers for military moms across the country, this is the first time the event has come to Plant City. The StarSpangled Babies® program aims to help families that may not have developed a solid resource group and support system due to deployments and frequent relocation. Many live far from friends and family and the program helps answer any questions the soon-to-be or new mothers may have. It also provides early childhood education tips and connects them to those locally who will remain in their corner for the duration of their stay in the area. — BREANNE WILLIAMS
