undreds of people braved knee-deep, muddy waters the morning of Aug. 25 to prove they “have what it takes.” It’s the signature tagline for Plant City’s famed Mud Titan 5K series. Mud Titan celebrated its 10th event — Mud Titan X — that day with everything mud runners know and love about running its course in the cow pasture: plenty of obstacles, camaraderie and mud for everyone. This summer’s run came shortly after heavy rains flooded parts of the Prevatt Road pasture, including the start/finish areas, but that didn’t stop runners from braving the warped wall, monkey bars and dozens of other challenges.

Bishop Rance Allen is kicking off a two-day revival in Plant City.

For more than a decade, Plant City has been home to a spiritual revival at at St. Mary’s Community Church that draws thousands from across the state.

An average of 500 to 700 worshipers gather each night every single year to experience a spiritual revival led by the legendary Grammy Award-nominated gospel singer Bishop Rance Allen. The two-day event is sure to be a packed house as Allen is joined by other entertainers like the St. Mary’s Praise Team, Evangelist Francine Jones and Charles & Oscar the singing puppet. Fall has never arrived earlier. On Tuesday, Starbucks brought back its beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte. Though the drink is supposed to ring in the first day of autumn, the company jumped the gun this year to surprise its devoted followers. The original latte, as well as the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino, are now officially on the menu. The drink is the company’s top selling drink of all time. Though Starbucks definitely broke its record on the release of the fall-themed drinks, Dunkin Donuts officially won the title of “Earliest Seasonal Release.” The company kicked off its holiday menu one day before Starbucks.

Primaries officially closed On Tuesday, the official Florida primary was held where registered party voters were able to fill out their party’s ballot and select who they wish to represent the respective parties come November. Florida is a closed primary state, so only those declared to an official party were able to cast a ballot. General Election early voting is Oct. 22 to Nov. 4 and Election Day is Nov. 6.

YMCA honors Jim Scott

OMG IT’S WEDNESDAY! PLANT CITY FARM AND FLEA MARKET

Jim Scott is the wearer of many hats, as demonstrated in a comical prop-filled salute by friend Rhett Rollyson during the annual YMCA Strong Leader Award ceremony. Scott was selected as this year’s honoree due to his longtime dedication to helping make Plant City the “best place to live, work and play.” Scott, of Plant City’s Jarrett Scott Ford Dealership, was the 16th honoree. He has served on boards and supported the YMCA, the Florida Strawberry Festival, the Plant City Lions Club, the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation among many others. The dinner in his honor was held at the John R. Trinkle Center at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23. All proceeds from the event went to help the YMCA’s programs and services.

Plant City ‘army’ tackles Walden Lake upkeep When commissioners announced they were “frustrated” at the state of the Walden Lake Golf & Country Club in a spontaneous outburst during the Aug. 13 commission meeting, they vowed to

do “whatever it takes” to ensure the property remained within code. On Aug. 23 they put their money where their mouths are. More than 40 tractors, lawn mowers and other equipment, along with more than 40 employees, were sent to follow through on promises made to hold Today’s Bank, the owner of the former golf course and clubhouse, accountable. “We call it the ‘army,’ we’re using an army to bring the property back to code within a short amount of time,” Mayor Rick Lott said. Following that meeting, the commissioners directed City Manager Bill McDaniel to let the bank know they’ve “had enough.” According to Lott, McDaniel warned bank officials they had not been keeping the property up to code by mowing all grass within 200 feet of a structure or roadway to a height of less than 10 inches and removing all the fallen tree debris within 200 feet of a structure or roadway. Using city means to bring the property to code is no cheap affair. The cost of the entire endeavor will be placed as a lien against the property. If the bank does not step in and meet the requirements of code in the future, the liens will continue to stack up against the property as the city continues to use its resources to care for the mass quantity of land. The mayor has ensured the property will be in compliance one way or another. According to McDaniel, all mowing was completed to code Monday and tree clearing was being finished Tuesday.

City Pointe hosting album release party Local Christian group The City Saints are set to release their debut album, Standing in the Fire, in late September. The band is celebrating with a Sept. 21 party at City Pointe Church, 503 N. Palmer St. from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Christian rapper Roy Tosh will also perform.

Many of the minifigs come as part of larger sets, however, the trading night allows customers to get exactly what they’re searching for.

GOT ANY ‘FIGS? Local collectors or avid fans can bring LEGO minifigs to a new trading night at Brick City Bricks.

IF YOU GO What: Minifig Trading Night When: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 31 Where: Brick City Bricks, 107 E. Reynolds St.

BREANNE WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

T

he world of LEGO has evolved to include so much more than colorful bricks and detailed sets. The elaborate creations of the company include scenes from beloved films, settings of cherished childhood memories and even intricate replicas of some of the world’s greatest architectural creations. One of its fastestgrowing trends is the collection of its minifigures. These tiny figures, standing just over one and a half inches tall, are taking the industry by storm. Brick City Bricks has created a monthly event to allow avid collectors to trade and expand their often detailed and extensive collections. “People can come in and bring their extra minifigs that they maybe don’t want anymore or perhaps they have duplicates, they can bring them to the event and trade them with other collectors,” Greg Williams, owner of Brick City Bricks, said. “It’s just a fun night where people get to enjoy what they love and meet other people who also share that passion.” It’s simply called “Minifig Trading Night,” but it is sure to continue to gain momentum as word spreads of the event. LEGO stores are a niche market. Though minifig trading is by

no means a unique event, it is rare to find anywhere in Tampa Bay or even this side of the state. The closest many come to having the opportunity is at LEGOLAND at Winter Haven or the LEGO store at Disney Springs. Though Williams opened his doors mere months ago, he has already attracted a loyal following from the local community as well as cities like Bradenton, St. Petersburg and Clearwater as people drive just to visit the eclectic store. The first trading night was held July 27 and Williams said he plans for the events to be held the last Friday of each month in correlation with the Food Truck Rally. His doors will be open late and guests of all ages are welcome to bring their minifigs in to find a new home and hopefully leave with a much-desired ‘fig of their own. He said there will more than likely be a small array of snacks throughout the event, but he is really hoping the attendees will take time to check out the food trucks right around the corner. “We’re really all about collaboration here in downtown,” Williams said. “We want people to come and check out not only our store but all of the other stores in the area. Yeah, come out and trade your minifigs, but stop at the food truck rally and get some food. Walk around and see what else Plant City has to offer.” Williams is no stranger to hosting trading events. In the 1990s he owned a baseball card shop in the Strawberry Plaza. He started holding trading nights there

where the community could come and trade cards with each other. At every event, the doors were constantly revolving and the shop was full. He’s hoping the same will happen among the LEGO community. To bolster the evening Brick City Bricks will be running a special on minifigs and minifig packs during the event. The store also has a special minifig building station where clients can come and build their own unique creation for $3.99 or build three for $10. The trays are full of smiling and grimacing yellow heads, intricately painted torsos, quirky headgear and, of course, accessories to fit any adventure. The possibilities are endless and Williams said the special creations and events held at Brick City Bricks will only continue to grow. He also warned there will be no devious plans of hoodwinking during his trading nights. The “minifig army” will be on patrol, making sure that knowledgeable collectors don’t attempt to take advantage of younger or perhaps less informed traders. “Most of these figs are running at $5 to $10,” Williams said. “But there are cases where some are much more valuable. Velma, from Scooby Doo, those are really rare. You’re looking at $40 to $60 just for that one minfig. Deadpool, he’s rare too. We know what to look for and we won’t let anyone take advantage of someone during the event.”

“It’s just a fun night where people get to enjoy what they love and meet other people who also share that passion.” – Greg Williams

Plant City may soon be “eating more chicken” as residents’ dreams of a hometown Chickfil-A appear to be on their way to fruition. While a number of obstacles, including the average income of local residents, have been roadblocks in the past, the recent growth throughout the city has allowed developers to finally clear the hurdles. “Chick-fil-A applied for a DRC for the Development Review Committee,” Planning & Zoning Manager Julie Ham said. The DRC application is the first step in a long process of review, analysis, detailed site plans and more to bring those lovable cows to the city that has been anxiously waiting for their arrival for decades. SCS Site Development submitted the application for review with the DRC. The DRC is meeting today to discuss the application. During the committee meeting, a group of staff and outside agencies will look at what Chick-fil-A is proposing and make comments on things like the number of spaces they have without an island or the way the curb is cut. “It’s basically them all going around and looking at a preliminary plan prior to them submitting site plans for the Planning & Zoning to distribute to the city staff to review,” Ham said. Once the application is combed through by the committee they will discuss issues like fees for the site plan review, impact fees and other upcoming steps with the applicant so everyone is on the same page going forward. From there a site plan will be submitted and the ball can officially begin rolling to have the establishment churning out Chick-n-Minis and strawberry milkshakes to the masses. The local support for the chain is more than transparent. When a pop-up Chick-fil-A came to town the lines were down the block with some even dressing up in black and white spotted outfits for the grand opening. The proposed plan will have the large restaurant built at 1102 Goldfinch Drive. The Sonny’s BBQ that currently calls that lot home is planned to be torn down and replaced with the chickenloving establishment. The preliminary concept plan shows a 4,857 square foot facility with 112 indoor seats and 28 outdoor seats. “This is just the preliminary, this is their first step,” Ham said. “They’re doing more like their due diligence. Here’s where they’re showing they’re going to design the property, but at any time they can come in and say ‘Ok well we’ve decided that’s not going to work for us.’ We would love for them to come here. It’s a preliminary step before they submit for site plan review.”

“There is so much going on,” Pastor Timothy S. Knighten Sr. said. “We all go through different struggles and I think it’s important we always remember that if we trust Him we can make it through anything. That’s the main focus of this revival, just reminding folks that they are not alone, that there is hope. And not only Plant City, but throughout the nation. I think it’s time for a spiritual awakening throughout the entire nation.” The church is calling it “two explosive nights of power.” Attendees obviously agree as they continue to flock from Bradenton, Dade City, St. Petersburg and more just to take part in the gathering. It’s laid out much like any typical service. There will be a worship session followed by a sermon — also performed by Allen — before closing out with a final round of worship from Allen. Allen formed the gospel music group The Rance Allen Group with his brothers. They went on to revolutionize the Christian music industry and are largely credited with starting the movement to incorporate rock and soul into the classic worship songs. Thanks to Allen’s influence, crossovers ended up helping launch legends like Amy Grant and Andrae Crouch. During the annual revival, Allen always makes sure to revisit some of his beloved hits. Knighten said audience members will often shout out a favorite and Allen will simply turn around and perform it without a second thought. Augustus “Sunny” Traylor is helping plan the event. He said the revival is a “renewed Christian experience for everyone.” This is St. Mary’s way of “waking the community up,” according to Traylor. “It’s a spiritual awakening,” Traylor said. “We are trying to open the eyes of the community,

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.” Friedrich Hayek

to get people more involved and helping each other. It’s our way of giving back to the community too. This event is completely free and it changes lives.” St. Mary’s motto is, “Come as you are.” Traylor said they take that to heart. Everyone is welcome and there is no specific dress code for the event. He said they are just hoping attendees are able to embrace God, “however they come.” There will also be an opportunity during the revival for attendees to win a three or four-night vacation. Though Allen’s prestige is undoubtedly a major draw for the event, the church has several rather successful revivals each year. Knighten said Allen always comes either in the late summer or the early spring to preach in Plant City. People from across the state have learned to expect his arrival at St. Mary’s each year, which leads to such a high attendance. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the revival starts promptly at 7 p.m. Abundant parking is available and attendees will be outside assisting incomers. “You can come to one night only and understand what’s going on, but I can guarantee if you come the first night you won’t want to miss the second one,” Knighten said. It’s definitely something you don’t want to miss. We’re just inviting everyone to come out and enjoy the Lord with us.”

I would propose the City buy the lands associated with the golf courses and clubhouse facilities to create an improved wetland, chain of ponds and nature trail park. Hire Wetherington Tractor Service to design an excavation plan that would create a chain of ponds and small lakes where once there were fairways and greens; the goal being to create a waterway chain joined with canals such that they could become a kayak or canoe friendly waterway. The design should also create nature trails tied to the Walden Lake boat ramp. It would become a Parks Department asset and available to the citizens as such. Where once property values were elevated due to fairway frontage, the result would be to change them to improved wetland and nature trail front homes. There would never again be a question as to it being properly maintained if a future golf course owner failed. To reduce cost, any marketable excavate could be sold with access from the northwest near the railroad tracks. Compared

to the decade or more of lost value and waste already endured, creating such a city nature trail and waterway park should be considered. If it were accomplished and designed to attach it to the old clubhouse areas, it is reasonable to assume that land might see increased potential enough to accomplish a resale to a new owner for renovation and renewed chance at viable future use. Our city has a proven ability to manage parks. But we can’t be expected to fix an essentially private problem unless there is something in it for the city as a whole. This solution eliminates the worry that the land will be developed into further homes, townhomes or apartment complexes. Sadly, it eliminates golf returning to Walden Lake. But it gains something for the city, removes uncertainty of future upkeep and turns what were golf-front homes into the nextbest value of improved wetland or nature trail front homes.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Justin Kline

The Strawberry Crest Chargers are looking to beat the King Lions Friday night.

King at Strawberry Crest The Chargers are looking to beat the Lions in consecutive seasons Friday night.

JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

I

f history truly does repeat itself, as the saying goes, the Strawberry Crest Chargers are about to have themselves a good week.

Crest is heading into Friday night’s home opener against King High School with high hopes. The Chargers beat King, 23-6, in an away game early last season that effectively ended the Chargers’ regular-season losing streak. That came after a loss to Spoto

in the 2017 opener and a win over Seminole in that preseason. In 2018, the Chargers picked up a 20-7 win over Seminole and, though they lost to the Spartans again, fared much better in a 12-7 loss. Last week’s matchup with Spoto was defined largely by Kobe Smith, the Spartans’ senior running back who gashed Crest’s defense to the tune of 182 yards and two touchdowns. Smith accounted for 87% of Spoto’s offense by himself and scored both of his touchdowns in the first half. But Crest’s defense performed well against the rest of the Spartans, holding quarterback Jerson Singleton to 15 yards on four completions against 12 pass attempts and holding the rest of Spoto’s rushers to a grand total of three yards. The Chargers were able to get seven points on the board in the fourth quarter, but the offense couldn’t pull off the comeback in the end. King had it much worse in a 44-0 home loss to Middleton. The Tigers successfully ran a balanced attack on the hosting Lions’ defense, passing for 111 yards with a 57% completion rate and rushing for 204 yards with 8.5 yards per carry among four players. On defense, Middleton’s Jason Comwall came up with an interception he returned for 97 yards. The Chargers would certainly like to head into the bye week on a positive note, especially since two of their next three games are among the toughest they’ll play all season: they return to action Sept. 14 at Tampa Bay Tech and will host Plant City on Sept. 28.

OTHER AREA ACTION DURANT Durant at Sickles, 7950 Gunn Highway, Tampa, 7:30 p.m. The Cougars hung on with Jesuit for three quarters last week and managed to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime. The only problem for Durant was the third quarter, in which the home team allowed 21 unanswered points in the span of about three in-game minutes. Durant couldn’t recover from that outburst. PLANT CITY Plant City at Hillsborough, 5000 N. Central Ave., Tampa, 7:30 p.m. Down by five points with 32 seconds left, Plant City quarterback Braxton Plunk linked up with Eric McLeod for a 36-yard touchdown that capped off a 19-14 Raiders win over Jefferson. Plant City also committed 22 of the game’s 53 combined penalties, a number the Raiders will have to bring down.

Taylor Johnson’s goal heading into last week’s East Hillsborough Invite was eighth place in the girls race and that’s exactly where she finished. Strawberry Crest’s top senior is also a member of the track and field team. When the season’s over, what would you consider a good senior year? I want to break 19:30.It’s a big goal but I’m trying to go for it. What are your college plans? I want to go into veterinary medicine, so USF probably. How many pets do you have? We have four cats, a bird and two dogs. What are your other hobbies besides running? I volunteer at the pet resource center, so that’s like working with the animals. I’m battalion commander of JROTC. I’m dual-enrolled right now. Most of my life is HCC, college. I’m just focusing on trying to get into a good college.

I get a buffalo chicken sandwich from Domino’s and that always boosts my energy. Those sandwiches usually make me want to take a nap and pass out on my couch right away and you go out there and run? It’s usually the night before that I eat it.

So you’re getting a great night’s sleep before meet day. And then in the morning, if it’s a morning meet, I don’t usually eat anything. I just hydrate.

What’s a fun fact about you that maybe not a lot of people know about? I’m pretty artistic. I’m into scrapbooking, putting together scrapbooks and stuff.
