Local gamers level up Thanks to the popularity of streaming sites like Twitch, gaming can be a career.

‘Yer a wizard, Harry’ Few days are as magical as July 31, also known as the birthday of The Boy Who Lived. When J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter into existence all those years ago she also forever cemented that often hot day in July as an international day of celebration. Brick City Bricks joined in the magic and threw a Harry Potter birthday bash. Two birthday cakes — exact replicas of the slightly squashed version from the films — were served to all those who stopped in. The movies were playing non-stop throughout the store and there was a special discount on several themed LEGO sets.

or many gamers, the prospect of evolving leisurely playing into a full-time career is nothing more than a pipe dream. Two Plant City locals have turned that dream into a reality. Upon first glance, their massive beards and shiny heads — one shaven, one naturally bald — makes Joe Pradera and Matthew

While no familial blood runs through their veins, their friendship, which was sparked decades ago in the sixth grade, created a brotherhood that has drawn in virtual admirers of more than 32,000 followers. “I’ve been playing video games all my life,” Pradera said. “Matt was always more of the ‘play outside’ kind of guy. A “fun day” celebration on Aug. 3 wrapped up another productive summer for Lots of Hugs.

Lots of Hugs in new location By the time this year’s Lots of Hugs Summer Reading Program ended, everybody was all smiles. That’s not just because the program ended with an outdoor “fun day” Aug. 3 with bounce houses, a slip ’n’ slide and pickup basketball, though — this summer was a big success for the program and its campers. Sharon Moody and her team moved the program to a new home in Hope Lutheran Church. This year, all 106 campers also got something to help them during the school year: backpacks filled with school supplies that were donated to the camp through the Kiwanis Club’s Stuff the Bus program.

the sixth grade and became best friends, but we never really gamed together until we were adults.” After playing World of Warcraft together for more than a decade they built up a natural tete-a-tete seldom seen in the streaming world. Then in 2016, while enjoying a meal at Cracker Barrel, they made a decision that would forever change their lives. They were going to attempt to move their brotherly dynamic to Twitch, a live streaming video platform that hosts communities like video game streaming, music shows and food broadcasts. On April Fools Day they launched BeardedGuysGaming. Pradera was working full-time as a salesman and was a devoted husband and father. Storey had recently finished his career as a firefighter and was taking care of his grandparents. They were coasting through life, but Pradera said they couldn’t pass up on an opportunity to do something they loved. So they invested nearly $6,000 in new equipment, converted a room in Pradera’s house into their studio and began pouring into their channel. On Twitch, many of the gaming channels feature one person sitting in front of a monitor. Those who log on will normally see the game screen and a cutout of the person showing their reactions as they play. Viewers can take part in a live chat, where they have the opportunity to talk with other watchers and the streamers.

While Pradera and Storey play they talk to their viewers. They’ll reply to their questions and share comical stories all the while responding in real time to what’s happening in the game. On Twitch it’s all about setting oneself apart and BGG is known for its unique dual-stream. It’s one of the few channels where two players are on screen interacting at the same time. This allows them to spend more time creating a natural and compelling dialogue while also ensuring they are continuously delving deeper into their gameplay. Though they built their gaming relationship around World of Warcraft, they soon branched out to Minecraft on their stream. They quickly began amassing a following and eventually transitioned to 7 Days to Die, which had a more adult audience. The switch led to an even more devoted following and allowed them to officially become partnered by Twitch on Nov. 7, 2016. Now the group is known for its variety of content. They stream games like 7 Days to Die, Sea of Thieves and The Forest. BGG became a second full-time job. Each stream lasts for hours and, when they aren’t streaming, they are diving into prep work and spending time on other people’s channels. The duo had strict goals and a timeline they were determined to meet. Their year-long goal of partnership, an honor only a fraction of Twitch accounts ever achieve, they accomplished in six months. As a partnered account you can monetize your content and get channel subscriptions.

According to Twitch’s 2017 year in review analysis, there are more than two million unique monthly broadcasters. More than 355 billion minutes of Twitch streams were watched last year and more than 15 million people visited the site every single day. One year after being partnered the duo took another dive and went full-time on their program. After months of planning with his wife and Storey, Pradera quit his job. It was the riskiest thing they’d ever done, but Pradera said the good that has come from the switch makes it all worth it. Twitch is heavily partnered with charities. In 2017, more than $30 million was raised for charities across the site. BGG partnered and helped raised thousands of dollars for local hospitals. They’ve built up a level of trust with their viewers that has opened the door to many life changing conversations. Storey said they want their stream to be authentic, so they don’t hesitate to talk about their lives on the channel. They’ve had viewers reach out and talk about their struggle with thoughts of suicide, kids have messaged in and shared their struggles with divorcing parents, people talk to them about their fight against addiction and personal demons they wrestle with every day. Some share how the channel has helped them get through tough times while others simply are looking for someone to talk to. Pradera and Storey never let a call go unanswered. “I’m making less now, but I can do more,” Pradera said. “These are the intrinsic awards we

never expected. It’s been a very hard thing to take in sometimes because we’re just two normal guys playing games. It’s amazing to see that we’re inspiring others and helping others just by doing what we love.” They hope to one day funnel their following into a way to help the town they love and were raised in blossom. They said the ultimate dream would be to open an old-fashioned barbershop in the heart of downtown. They would have cameras throughout the shop to stream to their channel, which would draw people near and far to be able to be featured on the site. In a few months, the duo is coming out with their new beard grooming products, which would go handin-hand with the barbershop dream. They said they just hope, at the end of the day, they might be able to teach residents of Plant City that a platform like Twitch exists and that it has a little something for everyone. “One of the biggest hurdles of Twitch is getting started,” Storey said. “You might go through 100 channels before you find one worth watching, but I guarantee there’s a channel for you. Whether you like gaming or cooking or drawing or tattoo, Twitch has it all.”

Joe Pradera and Matt Storey get festive for their holiday streams.

New deadline for Fire Station Three Commissioners voted to add $632,000 to the budget for the station. BREANNE WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

Thanks to a vote by city commissioners on July 30, Plant City is one step closer to seeing the longdiscussed Fire Station Three completed. The new fire station will be built along Park Road near the old Tourist Information Center, 1702 N. Park Road. When the completed design plans were revealed, the total price tag was a little more than $3 million. However, due to low construction estimates from the architect, continually increasing costs of construction material and an overall lack of skilled construction workers that led to increased wages, that budget needed to be reevaluated. “You have an estimate in a budget that was built what, two and a half years ago?” McDaniel said.

“With construction being as busy as it is right now, obviously there’s been some inflationary pressure on prices, a whole bunch of issues have impacted that over the period we’ve been working on it. When we did the bid we had multiple firms bid on it and the prices were significantly higher than the original budget.” According to a presentation by McDaniel, 12 contractors submitted bids ranging from a low of $2,798,660 to a high of $3,935,129.30. The cheapest bidder did not have the experience in building public safety facilities required for the bid. The bidder of $3,068,000 did meet the requirements. On July 30, commissioners approved amending the budget to add approximately $632,000 so a contractor could begin work on the new site. Staff contacted the lowest responsive and responsible bid and begin to discuss value engineering, which is a systematic method that examines function to cost. Using this method, you then begin to manipulate the value to

improve the cost until you reach the peak. The contractor identified a potential savings of $213,000 using that method and the architect confirmed the changes could be made without changing the appearance or functionality of the station. The contract was awarded to West Construction, Inc. The plan is for the new station to be completed within nine to 12 months.

The proposed budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year also includes plans to repair the roof of Fire Station Two, which McDaniel said is in desperate need of fixing up. In the 2019-2020 fiscal budget, a larger fund is expected to be set aside to do a major overhaul of the station. These renovations will include revamping the long outdated dorm rooms and kitchen.

stuffy or runny nose may be a sign of cold or allergies. But if you have been treated for these ailments and are still experiencing sinus issues, you may have chronic or recurrent sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis is a common condition that causes inflammation in the sinus passages, which may lead to excess drainage and discomfort. Chronic sinusitis is often brought on by infection, nasal polyps, or by a deviated septum. “Some patients with chronic sinusitis suffer for months on end and have been on antibiotics. That’s why we recommend balloon sinuplasty for patients who qualify,” Scott Powell MD, a board-certified otolaryngologist with Florida E.N.T. & Allergy, said. A balloon sinuplasty, also called Balloon Sinus Dilation, is a minimally invasive procedure during which a balloon catheter is inserted into the nose and then the sinus. This balloon catheter is then gradually inflated to widen the sinus pathway. Once the dilation is complete, the balloon is deflated and removed, but the sinus remains open. By gently

Each year, the community comes together to celebrate local first responders and enjoy one last summer party. Plant City’s Noon Rotary Club has been hosting the Community Appreciation Fun Day at the Randy L. Larson Softball Complex, 1500 S. Park Road, for the past three years. Approximately 50 volunteers from the Rotary and local high schools fight the heat and make sure everyone has a fun and educational day. This year the Rotary expected between 700 and 800 guests to attend and the parking lot was full of cars as families flocked to watch presentations like the “Jaws of Life” rescue mission from the Plant City Fire Department or the hands-on equipment demonstrations by the Plant City Police Department’s SWAT team. HSCO also flew in and landed a helicopter on one of the fields. Children were able to go out and sit in the chopper and talk to the pilots about how it works and why it is essential to have as part of the force. When they took a break from learning and getting to know their local first responders, many of the children formed a long line around the bungee jump and rock climbing walls, which were sponsored by Unity in the Community. There also were bounce houses and a dunk tank on site to offer a pleasurable break from the summer heat.

reconfiguring the structure of the sinus passage, the procedure restores normal sinus drainage and keeps post-operative pain to a minimum. This is all done in less than one hour. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not require incisions or removal of any bone or tissue. The many benefits of this procedure include: n Absence of surgical incisions n Minimal risk n Reduced bleeding n No damage to surrounding tissue n Shorter recovery time n No anesthesia This procedure is minimally invasive and most patients are able to return to all activities the same or next day. Studies indicate that most patients experience continued sinus health for over two years following a balloon sinuplasty procedure.

required for attendance. “Murder at Mike’s” is a mix of both slapstick and witty humor and is sure to appeal to all audiences. Though the shows are technically family friendly, it is best suited for adults. Many use it as a perfect date night or girls night out event. During the intermission cast members will be walking among the tables with clues that can be purchased for $2 each or three for $5. Those clues may be the difference between successfully guessing the murderer or epic failure. Gail Lyons, president of the Friends of the Bruton Memorial Library, said the group uses the funds raised throughout the evening to support the library. It will help expand the library’s resources and facilities, the children’s summer program, cultural and educational events presented at the library, as well as help fund

scholarships for local high school students. The service it provides for the library is a big draw for many of the cast. “It’s a huge investment to not just the library, but to the community as a whole,” Morgan said. “Because of the transient students that we have because of the strawberry industry and things like that, we have a lot of children that don’t have access to computers and books. The library really does a great job of allowing children to come and access those resources, which is a huge investment in their lives.”

FALL 2018—AUGUST 13 TO NOVEMBER 13, 2018 GOSPEL OF JOHN .................................................. Professor Marc Mashburn Beginning Monday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. John’s intimate relationship for the three years of daily fellowship with Jesus Christ and his years of guidance through the Holy Spirit led to this tremendous revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. John was captivated with the message of redemption proclaimed and then procured by Christ. While the depth of this gospel shall never be reached, a journey through John’s guidance provides abundant fruit whenever we ponder its message. Individual study is rewarding, but group study intensifies the wealth of truth discovered.

Liberty Baptist Church 2505 W. Granfield Avenue Plant City, Florida 33563 813-730-1016 www.evangelicalcollege.org

YOU ARE INVITED! Evangelical College and Seminary invites you to sample the courses we will be offering this fall during the week of August 13th. During that week, all classes will be open to the general public with no charge or obligation. In addition, new students can take their first course at no charge.

Join with Professor Marc Mashburn as he guides the class in an understanding of God’s revelation through this vital gospel and learn of its application for life direction. This gospel provides direction for daily living and for the assurance of eternal life through faith in the One Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. NEW TESTAMENT PROPHECY ............................ Professor Robert Westlake Beginning Tuesday, August 14 at 6:30 p.m. The New Testament provides abundant evidence of fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament. Add to this the prophetic revelations of the future as reveled by Jesus Christ in His teachings as recorded accurately through the Holy Spirit. With the New Testament Epistles and the epic revelation given to the Apostle John, we have precise teachings regarding the days in which we live and the plan of our God for His majestic work of creation, for His chosen people (the nation of Israel), and for His bride (the church). Professor Robert Westlake’s extensive research, daily biblical observations, and repeated teaching of this course provide a solid basis for an accurate understanding of the prophetic teachings of the Holy Spirit.

Psalms 1 encourages believers to immerse themselves in God’s Word and experience the blessings of growth in their faith and spiritual stability in their day-to-day living.

PASTORAL LETTERS ................................................. Professor Aaron Brown Beginning Tuesday, August 14 at 6:30 p.m.

It is the purpose of ECS to help believers develop a deeper understanding of God’s word and experience its transforming power in their lives. While we have students that are in degree or certificate programs, we have many that take classes to just have a better understanding of God’s Word. Scholarships are also available to students with financial need.

This course takes us to the foundations of the structure and leadership of the church. What the church is to be under the guidance of the Holy Spirit is demonstrated by the Apostle Paul. The heart and function of the pastor fulfills the understandng that it is our Lord’s church, not that of the pastor.

Please take a moment and review the courses listed and select one or more classes to “sample” the week of August 13th. There is no need to preregister. Simply come to ECS at that date and time indicated on the course listing.

The role of the local church and the function of her pastor has changed through the centuries. There is no end to the books written and the meetings promoted for the success and advancement of the entire church movement.

Professor Aaron Brown leads the class in understanding the Scriptures and in their practical application for a church and her pastor that function as successful under submission to the Holy Spirit. Graduate level courses for the of John and Pastoral Letters are available with the addition of graduate level requirements. LEARNING THE ROPES

COACHING Coaching at the high school and higher levels can be tough but rewarding.

JUSTIN KLINE SPORTS/ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Strawberry Crest head football coach Ron Hawn has dedicated nearly 20 years of his life to coaching at the high school and collegiate levels and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon. Coaching has taken him around the country and, though the life can be tough, he said it’s been a rewarding ride. Learning the Ropes is an educational series for high school students, college students or adults who wish to work in the sports world. Not everyone can be an all-star pro athlete, but there are plenty of ways to work in the sports you love. How did you get your start? My first job was at Sterling College in Kansas, coaching linebackers and working with special teams. I got paid $5,000

a year. I lived on campus and I had a meal plan. From there I went to Assumption College, which is a Division II school in Massachusetts. I made a little bit more money. I coached the D-line and special teams there. Nobody was full-time except for the head coach, so I worked as a teacher in the Department of Youth Services in Massachusetts for three or four years. My last job in college was at Northeastern University in Boston. I was coaching sam (strong outside linebackers) linebackers that first season. My second season into my third spring, I worked with everything from D-line to DB. My last two years, I was making about $10,000 a year and 100% full-time football. From there I came down here and substitute taught, coached D-line at Tarpon Springs for a year and got a full-time job teaching at Hagerty

When you could move all over the place at any time for work and the stipends are so low, how do you manage that? Living in Boston, you’re basically gonna eat cat food and live in a cardboard box. The refrigerator boxes are too expensive. I did real estate on the side. I worked bouncing bars and did all kinds of stuff… It’s easy when you’re 22 years old. I couldn’t do that now. I’ve got a three-yearold kid and I’m married. It’s definitely a sacrifice to do those things. You’ve got to be willing to up and move. Somebody told me when I was first trying to get in, was that you need to put your ego aside and understand you’re not gonna make any money doing that. Create relationships, network and do those things. Just be prepared. What’s the average day look like for you? We’ll watch film on Monday mornings at about 7 o’clock. I’ll get here at 6:30 or so. We’ll go right up until school starts. We’ll do the same thing on Tuesdays but lift weights before school. We usually finish practice at about 6:15 p.m. and I try to get out of here by 7 o’clock at the latest, but it doesn’t always happen. Thursdays are a little weirder because of JV games. Fridays are a marathon. Friday turns into Saturday morning pretty quick. Twelve hours (a day) is the average. I was on this campus a little over 70 hours last week and I did another pushing up on 20 hours of film on Saturday and Sunday preparing for our scrimmage on Saturday. That included a fourhour defensive staff meeting at my house. It’s probably 80 hours on an average week.

Not losing pounds? Have patience

A

t least once per day, I hear someone say “I am exercising and watching what I eat and still not losing weight.” When you don’t see results right away, it can be frustrating and may make you want to throw in the towel. Before you do, take a good look at what changes you are making to your diet and exercise and be patient. You need to burn about 3,500 calories to lose one pound. Here are some tips to help you lose about a pound per week. Are you tracking what you eat? By logging your meals and snacks, you can see where those extra calories are coming from. Make sure you log when you eat so you don’t forget and also pay attention to your portion sizes. Be honest with yourself and track every morsel. Yes, even the creamer in your coffee counts. Tell someone about your weight loss goals. Just like food logging, this can help with accountability. Where are you eating? Eat most of your meals at home. Not only will it save you money, but you’ll know exactly what is in it and how much. Fill your plate with mostly vegetables and eat lean meats. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein for adults is 0.8 grams per kilogram of your body weight. Carbohydrates are important for energy, so don’t cut them out. Fruits, vegetables

and whole grains like blueberries, broccoli, red peppers, spinach, whole grain breads and pastas are examples of carbohydrates loaded with nutrients. Are you drinking enough water? Drinking water won’t make you lose weight, but we are actually just thirsty most of the time when we feel hungry. Have a glass of water when you are feeling hungry and it will help you to eat less. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest. This is why it is so important to include resistance training in your workouts. If you’re only doing cardio, adding any kind of weight training can help build muscle. Looking for more? The Plant City Family YMCA is hosting an eight-week weight loss program beginning August 15. The group will meet twice weekly and sessions will include education and training. “Y weight?” Inquire at 1507 YMCA Place or call 813757-6677 for more information.

Connor De Pianta Strawberry Crest senior Connor De Pianta went undefeated at the 2018 West Florida Open wrestling tournament in July. De Pianta, who wrestles at 138 pounds, is enjoying his leadership role within the Chargers’ changing program and wants to help his teammates succeed on and off the mat while he pursues his own state championship goals. How have you prepared for the extra responsibilities of being a leader for Strawberry Crest? I’m feeling really confident. I’d say I have pretty good leadership skills and I know a lot of the boys look up to me. I try to lead by example getting on the mat, being confident, taking shots where I need and showing them there’s nothing to be scared of. It’s just stepping on the line and doing what you’ve got to do.

Know someone who deserves an Athlete of the Week feature? Email Justin Kline at JKline@plantcityobserver.com by the Friday before the next issue.

What’s one of the most important things you’ve learned that’s helped you shift into this role? It’s persistence. Staying at it. It’s not gonna get any easier, so you’ve got to realize you’ve just got to do it. What advice would you give to anyone joining SCHS this year? Nothing comes easy and you’ve got to stay persistent. Just do it. You realize you’ll start getting better and growing.
