tudents at Nelson Elementary gathered together in the school’s courtyard on Tuesday to participate in the annual Ribbons to Remember event in honor of Sept. 11. Each year four differently-colored ribbons, one in red, one in white,

one in blue and one in yellow, are presented and tied to four trees in the courtyard. Parents of Nelson students that serve in the military or as first responders joined their children in the ceremony and tied the ribbons to the tree. — BREANNE WILLIAMS

PCPD seeking robbery suspect

first in order to be eligible for the reward.

Plant City Police Department detectives are looking for a man suspected of robbing several Walgreens stores. Detectives said a man robbed the Plant City store at 2102 W. Baker St. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 6, and may also be responsible for robberies in Seffner, Temple Terrace and the Orlando area that have happened over the last three weeks. Police said the suspect’s actions in Plant City were the same on both dates: he entered the store looking for a single bottle of water, reached into the open cash drawer after handing the clerks $1 bills and fled the scene in a small, dark-colored, two-door vehicle. The suspect stole $20 at 6:21 a.m. on Aug. 31 after struggling with the cashier and nabbed $150 from the cash drawer at 6:24 a.m. on Sept. 6. He’s described as a black male standing between 5-foot-10 and six feet tall, weighing between 225 pounds and 240 pounds. In each incident he was wearing a tan baseball cap with an unknown logo on the front. The suspect wore different clothing in each incident, save for the hat. Anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspect is asked to notify the Plant City Police Department. Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information, which can be claimed by calling 1-800-8738477, reporting anonymously online at crimestopperstb.com, or sending a mobile tip using the P3 Tips Mobile application. AKE Plant City debuted one year ago with one simple mission in mind: to act as a facility that connects people to local creative makers of all types. On the second Tuesday of each month, they meet at a different location to not only create that camaraderie between individual attendees but to also highlight the small businesses and organizations that are pillars in the local community. Despite some common misconceptions MAKE has no intention

“Plant City has so much development right now, both with the industrial and the residential, so that makes this type of group even more essential.” — Charles Galvin, member of MAKE

of being an event-based group that hosts elaborate festivals or spearheads grand celebrations. It’s a platform and though it is only a year old, the movements that have sparked from friendships and collaborations made are already making an impact on Plant City. “There’s so much that I don’t think would have ever happened had MAKE not been created,” Jessie Frier, founding member of MAKE Plant City, said. “The improv comedy group, the standup group, several of the collaborations we’re starting to see, that’s all because of MAKE.” Vicky Saunders, founding member of MAKE Plant City, said the structure of each event is entirely designed to foster organic connections. People always come early to chat with the featured artist, which is always a small business or local artist that wants to connect to the community and seek out new attendees to find out what their “creative passion” is. Then a guest speaker shares stories about their creative journey and how they got the successful point they are today. The audience can interact and ask detailed questions in a Q&A with the speaker. By the end of each meeting they’ve received a new insight on what need the aritst sees in the community and learned what they are attempting to do to fill that demand. Several attend that have no desire to ever take part in an artistic or creative feat of their own. They, however, represent the

growing demand from the community to support and utilize the talent found within the Plant City limits. “This is about arts, culture and elevating the creative pillar of our community,” Arley Smude said. “But it’s just as much about our local economy. Don’t complain about poor quality products made overseas and the outsourcing of American jobs and then go buy your belt at Walmart. Charles makes belts in Plant City. Dan makes knives in Plant City. Mandy makes chocolate in Plant City. Starr Creations makes monster truck frames in Plant City. There are so many undiscovered creative people and businesses in our community.” Plant City is not alone in its conscious turn toward zeroing in on local makers. The national movement toward refocusing on revitalizing local economies by returning to the support of local businesses and talents has sparked the creation of similar groups across all 50 states. MAKE Plant City was born after Smude and Saunders began attending the Lakeland Creative Makers and realized there were several Plant City residents driving each month to tap into this type of group. The demand was there and since announcing the Plant City group’s arrival there has never ceased to be a packed house at the events. “We’re connecting people to the talent right here in Plant City,” Saunders said. “Five years from now I believe MAKE will still

stay true to its roots with monthly meetings and just that focus on collaboration. In five years, I want to see more art events come from connections made here, more local businesses pop up because community members were able to fall in love with the work of people who call Plant City home.” Rebecca Nipper Galvin and her husband, Charles Galvin, were part of the group that met Saunders and Smude in Lakeland. She is an artist specializing in watercolors and he is a leatherworker. They’ve attended nearly every Plant City meeting since its creation and said it is bringing awareness, spreading the knowledge that there is a better, local option to most of the goods and services you can buy from chain stores or from large corporate businesses. Nipper Galvin coined the group as being “creative match-makers.” She said MAKE is here to bridge that gap between both the community and creatives and fellow makers with each other. Its a way to make arts and creativity of any kind more accessible to the general public so they can “be a supporter of the arts in their own little way.” “Plant City has so much development right now, both with the industrial and the residential, so that makes this type of group even more essential,” Galvin said. “It’s letting the community know there are people making things around us, that you can kind of change your outlook on what is available for you.”

Main Street given second chance Plant City Main Street could get a chance to obtain funding in the upcoming fiscal year. BREANNE WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

Of the several unexpected twists brought up throughout Monday night’s city commission meeting, Vice Mayor Nate Kilton tossing a metaphorical life preserver to Plant City Main Street received the most attention. In a controversial move on July 30, the city announced it would no longer provide its annual $50,000 support to the barely two-year-old organization. Its board members were told mere days prior to the public proposed budget presentation. After more than a month of discussion, it seems the city has had a change of heart, sort of, as Kilton stated the city should consider offering an alternative matching program to the group. “One item that was removed from the budget was the funding for the Main Street program,” Kilton said. “I can appreciate the concern for watching every penny and making sure that we’re good stewards and I know there’s been some challenges with the group with some initial fundraising and funding in their infancy, but I do

Main Street was given a second chance at funding Monday evening when Vice Mayor Nate Kilton suggested the city agree to a matching program with the group.

believe that there’s a desire for that program in Plant City.” After speaking to the board members of the organization Kilton said the city should agree to match funds raised in $10,000 increments up to $50,000 over the course of the next fiscal year.

Essentially, if Main Street successfully raises $10,000, the city will give them $10,000 to bump their total budget up to $20,000 and so forth. The allotted funds would be set aside from the Community Redevelopment Agency’s con-

tingency fund. Several of Main Street’s board were present at the public hearing and Lizzette Sarria, chairman of Plant City Main Street, confirmed they were on board with the new agreement. “We are very pleased that the city commission is going to support Main Street,” Sarria said. “Our current work plan will support this.” Commissioner Bill Dodson voiced his concern for the current method the city relies upon to distribute funding for organizations. He said the method used to fund nonprofits needs to be reconsidered and that funding should be more pragmatic and not political, which he fears may have become the case. “To do that, I think accountability as a benchmark for funding is inevitable,” Dodson said. He referenced the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce as an example of what a solid recipient would look like. The Chamber is set to receive $65,000 from the city if the proposed fiscal year 2018-2019 budget is approved and the majority of its funding “comes from its own resourcefulness,” according to Dodson. Earlier that evening, Chamber President Christine Miller walked commissioners through the successes of the organization and discussed the benefits it provides. For the upcoming year, Miller said the Chamber’s budget is approximately $600,000. Of that,

only $65,000 is slotted to come from the city. Miller said approximately 51% of the total finances comes directly from fundraising and other components, like new and renewed Chamber membership, make up the rest of the total budget. Dodson praised this selfsufficiency and said he would like to see other recipients attempt to be as self-reliant as the Chamber. “I believe if you don’t create these types of benchmarks, you’re going to have standing room only for nonprofits seeking easy money,” Dodson said. “I believe it’s important to, it’s easy to get away from accountability and into entitlements when you’ve been providing funding for such a time without accountability that the appearance of it begins to be entitlement. I don’t support that. I believe in giving a helping hand when nonprofits have recognizable missions, when it’s something that will help our city and you can prove it. But I don’t believe in handing out these entitlements.” Dodson warned if in the future organizations came looking for said “easy money” he would use his vote to sustain city funds by encouraging it only be placed in the hands of those that would be making the most of the help. Main Street is confident it will be able to thrive under the matching program and the final vote on the budget will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in City Hall.

fter years of dreaming and planning, the long-awaited “A Taste of Laura Street” is coming to Plant City. The Improvement League of Plant City created the food festival to highlight the historic character that set Laura Street apart

opportunity to spend time in one of Plant City’s hidden treasures. A live band will also be on location providing great music throughout the festival. The Plant City Photo Archives & History Center is also working with the Improvement League for the event and anyone in the community that has photos of Laura Street in its prime are asked to allow the archives to scan a copy for its collection. “There’s so much legend surrounding Laura Street that it’s hard to say for sure who these people were and what their story was,” Thomas said. “Obviously we want to be able to highlight the business owners that at one day were up and down Laura Street. This will help us hopefully get an accurate count of who they were and maybe even talk about the recipes that we know have been passed down. Who knows? Maybe one day we could even have an exhibit of those family recipes.” The festival will grant attendees the chance to judge local cuisine, check out a traveling art gallery exhibit and dive into the historical ambiance of the former cultural center. City commissioners will also be competing for “Best Commissioner Dessert Dish” during the event. Any vendors interested in joining the festivities should call The Improvement League by Monday, Sept. 17 at 813-757-6760. “This is just the first of hopefully many Taste of Laura Street events to come,” Thomas said. “Just going by the feedback we’ve got at this point, I’m expecting several hundred to attend.”

The Bing Rooming House Museum has made it its mission to highlight the history of the surrounding community.

as a cultural icon from the early 1900s through the 1980s. Restaurants, shops and minority-owned businesses flourished on Laura Street and the new event will pay homage to that. “Part of the Bing House Museum’s mission is to highlight historic pieces of history in Plant City in regards to black history,” William Thomas Jr., president of the Improvement League, said. “Laura Street was known during that era to be a thriving business sector for African Americans during the segregation era. Primarily talking about business owners, entrepreneurship and creating an environment where businesses can thrive in a time where things weren’t necessarily equal. The community formed together to support each other in business ventures.” Thomas said Plant City is currently in a time of immense growth and a way to ensure we protect our quality of life is to go back and highlight the wonderful qualities of the community, and shine light on things in history that were the foundation of where we are today.

The Bing Rooming House Museum has long sought out artifacts and keepsakes from Plant City’s past. There is a constantly flowing conversation surrounding Laura Street and the mecca that was inadvertently created along its path. The hope is through this event the community will be able to rekindle the embers left behind of the Laura Street legacy. To this day, Thomas said everyone who has a tie to the immense history of that street claims they have the superior cooking skills thanks to the recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. This event gives them a chance to show off their talents and let Plant City taste first hand the legendary cuisine from yesteryear. “People love to eat, people love food and the community,” Thomas said. “This is an event that’s all-inclusive. People of all backgrounds will be here to just enjoy a day of good food and interesting history.” Up to 10 vendors will be present at the event cooking food ranging from classic southern meals to vibrant Hispanic cuisine. Other groups like the Arts Council of Plant City and the Plant City Family YMCA will also be on site. Johnson’s BBQ and Walmart joined the Improvement League in spearheading the event and the group also received a grant to purchase equipment like chairs, tables and tents. The Bing House Museum will be open throughout the festival so anyone who wants a break from the weather or is curious about the extensive history on display within its walls will have the

Dear Walden Lake Neighbors, We are sick and tired of fairways that have become erratically mowed wastelands, devaluing our property, discouraging would-be buyers and lowering our quality of life. However, now is not the time to act rashly by dropping the lawsuit. The lawsuit is a result of Walden Lake homeownerimplied rights. The lawsuit is our first line of defense against rezoning and ruinous residential infill development. Dropping the lawsuit would signal that we are open to throwing some homeowners under the bus to get promised club benefits. Dropping the suit would be a betrayal of trust placed in WLCA by Walden Lake Preservation Trust and others who have contributed to the lawsuit. Dropping the lawsuit may open the WLCA to lawsuits from: Today’s Bank, PGGG, Visions Golf, and other Visions

creditors. All may claim, and prove, that they incurred monetary losses as a result of a frivolous lawsuit brought by WLCA. Today’s Bank foreclosed on the property. While we sympathize with them, we cannot sacrifice our principles, our guidelines, to bail them out. In order to go forward and resolve the crisis, our WLCA must set forth some guidelines on what is negotiable and what is not. I recommend no infill development, assisting owners seeking to restore club services without residential development and, as a last resort, accepting club ownership gratis and maintaining same as a park. Walden Lake Roadmap, a 27-minute video providing details on these guidelines, will be aired for Board Members and Neighborhood Presidents at the WLCA Meeting House at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13. A second showing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, will be open to all (please email attendance plans to wlroadmap@gmail.com). Don’t drop the lawsuit. Instead, press for a rapid, favorable verdict from the Court!

“The ’70s. It’s the most diverse. There’s amazing country music and rock and you’ve got Michael Jackson coming onto the scene. If you’ve got Michael Jackson, you’ve got it.”

“I’m thinking maybe the early grunge era of music so the late ’90s or early 2000s. That’s the music I grew up on. I love old rock, which would be my second favorite.”

Having a voice is important, so keeping it strong and healthy should be a priority. The Florida Center for Voice & Swallowing is a new dedicated center that specializes in the diagnosis and management of voice and swallowing disorders, offering the latest technology and a coordinated team approach to patients. The basic parts of the vocal system include: the respiratory system,

the larynx and the throat, mouth and nasal cavities. Lower your risk of vocal problems by adopting these personal habits: n Drink six to eight glasses of water daily n Reduce caffeine intake n Reduce or eliminate alcohol intake n Stop smoking n Avoid smoke or other irritants n Exercise regularly n Get adequate sleep n Control allergies n Control reflux “I have always focused my practice in these areas, but now the new center will provide an opportunity for even more dedicated service to these types of patients,” said Daniel A. The selection for this month’s Feature Car of the Month was an easy one!! You will not find a nicer 1955 Chevy Bel Air that is driven and not a trailer queen! Earl and Wilma attend a lot of car shows and Cruise-ins in the area and yes, Wilma is always with him!! They have rolled up 5,000 miles in the 6 years since the car was finished, that’s a lot of cruise-ins!!! It took Earl three and a half years to do a complete frame off rotisserie build!! The stock chassis was completely rebuilt and power disc brakes were added to update the braking system for safety! The engine is a 327 cubic inch Chevrolet small block mated to a 700 R4 Overdrive Tranny for highway cruising. The Red and white paint job on this car is beautiful, with a matching red and white Ultra Leather interior that is gorgeous! The wheels are American Racing Eagles. The workmanship on this car is incredible. Even with 5,000 miles on the car and being built 9 years ago it looks like it was just finished yesterday! Earl and Wilma will have their beautiful 1955 Chevy Bel air on display at the Strawberry Classic Cruise-in on Saturday September 15, 2018 from 3:00 PM till 8:00 PM. Stop by and say hello to Earl and Wilma and you will not meet two nicer people!!! You will be able to view this car at the

The area’s top finisher in the boy’s race was Plant City junior Danny Ramirez, who placed 44th with a time of 18:49.45. Ramirez led the Raiders to a seventh-place team finish. Haydon Patrick’s time of 19:16.12 led the Durant Cougars to a 14thplace finish and Ethan Ball’s 20:09.61 run led Strawberry Crest in its 20th-place finish. Crest senior Taylor Johnson led all area girls with a 16th-place time of 21:41.18, which helped the Chargers record a 17th-place team finish. Plant City’s team finished 26th overall, led by Hannah Manley’s time of 24:53.88. Durant sent three runners to the event and Kirsten Grindel led the Cougars with a 24:08.67.

Lennard at Plant City OTHER AREA ACTION DURANT vs. East Bay, 4748 Cougar Path, 7:30 p.m. The Alafia River Rivalry game didn’t go too smoothly for the hosting Durant Cougars, who took a 28-14 loss to Newsome after holding a 14-7 lead at halftime. The Cougars will now host undefeated East Bay this week. The Indians never trailed in last week’s 35-12 home win over Robinson, in which East Bay attempted (and completed) exactly one pass against 37 rushes. Tre Everett gained 146 of the Indians’ 244 rushing yards and four of East Bay’s five touchdowns came on the ground. File photo

Sept. 8 was also the day of the 2018 City Relays swimming event in Tampa at the Bobby Hicks Pool and all three Plant City-area schools participated. Strawberry Crest was the only area school to record top-10 team finishes in both boys (seventh place, 124 points) and girls (fifth place, 156 points) competition. The Chargers performed well in the mixed relays, placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.13) and 200 freestyle (1:39.70) events. Durant’s and Plant City’s boys and girls teamed up for their schools’ best finishes of the meet, with the Cougars coming in sixth place (2:20. 89) and the Raiders in 15th place (3:11.30) in the mixed 200 breaststroke relay.

hat a time to be a Plant City Raider. It wasn’t that long ago that the Raiders were winless heading into September and looked every bit like a team trying to find its identity with a new head coach. But that was 2017 — one year of learning has made a world of difference for PCHS, which now sports a 3-0 record entering this week’s 7A-District 9 opener. The Raiders are checking many of the right boxes these days. Last year’s late-game struggles against Jefferson and Hillsbor-

ough became lessons learned for this year’s first two wins, both coming on the road. Plant City showed against both teams that it can overcome its mistakes — 22 penalties against Jefferson and a shaky first half against Hillsborough were wiped out by strong second-half performances. Wharton didn’t pose much of a threat to Plant City last week, then coming off of a 2-0 loss to Blake and leaving 1 Raider Place with a 44-7 loss to the Raiders. Braxton Plunk threw for 258 yards and four touchdowns on 10 completions and Zamir’ Knighten led the charge on the ground with 72 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Though the Wildcats were able to pick off two of Plunk’s pass attempts, the PCHS defense smothered them with three forced fumbles, seven quarterback hurries and 17 tackles for loss. competitive fire and a cleaner bill of health than in 2017, Plant City looks like a team with the right pieces for a playoff run. Next up for the Raiders is Friday’s game against the Lennard Longhorns. Plant City will have its hands full with the Longhorns’ rushing attack, bolstered by Tino Hunt (who put up 164 yards against the Cowboys) and a stout offensive line, but Lennard is coming off of a 35-12 loss at Gaither last week. Though Lennard held a 12-0 lead on the Cowboys in the first half, Gaither answered with 14 of its own before halftime and kept on rolling. Lennard lost three fumbles (including one that was returned for a touchdown) and threw two interceptions.

STRAWBERRY CREST at Tampa Bay Tech, 6410 Orient Road, Tampa, 7:30 p.m. Strawberry Crest’s defense has been excellent through the team’s two games in 2018, holding opponents to a combined 18 points and helping the Chargers to a 1-1 record. They’re coming out of a bye week to travel to Tampa Bay Tech, perhaps the best team in the Tampa Bay area. Last Friday, Tech came back from its own bye week for a battle at Sickles that ended in a 19-6 win for the Titans. Tech’s defense held the Gryphons to 58 yards of offense and made sure Sickles couldn’t get anything going while the offense took some time to find its rhythm.
