Richard Clarkson Studio is a Brooklyn based art and design laboratory. We create objects, products and installations that are, minimal in style, honest in material, elegant in simplicity and sculptural to the core. Distorting the ever-blurring lines between art & design, we use processes and methodologies drawn from both disciplines. We offer services in consultancy, product and experience design. We also operate as an in-house fabrication facility with an evolving range of pieces available for commission and sale.
In this lookbook we are showcasing a mixture of work. From our flagship range of internationally acclaimed Cloud products to an armchair that heralds a new line of furniture featuring thematically consistent aesthetics, materials, and production techniques. We also present Executive Objects our range of desktop and home-good objects - an exciting new area of exploration for the studio. Lastly we look at some of our favorite lighting pieces - ranging from calm & meditative, to bright & active. - Richard Clarkson

floating. A magnetically levitating ambient lamp. The project is a collaboration between the two companies – merging the innovative levitation technology developed by Crealev with the form and function of the Cloud product of Richard Clarkson Studio. interactive clouds smart, tiny, rgb. Use strands of individually programmable LEDs to create multi-color animations and advanced lighting effects and music reactive effects. Our interactive Clouds include the Smart Cloud, Tiny Cloud and all sizes of the RGB Clouds. Not only do our Interactive clouds look stunning together they also use the same remote control protocol allowing for simultaneous control of RGB cloud clusters. cloud shade. (all sizes of Cloud Shade and Cloud Shade with Stand ) use one or two LED Edison Screw Bulbs (1 for Small and Medium sizes and 2 for Large and Huge sizes) available in either warm (2700k) or cool (5000k) color temperatures. Bulb Clouds are more like traditional lamp shades. Available in pendant, floor stand and desk stand in either white or black.

journ. Inspired by the act of writing, Journ aspires to be the perfect place to reflect, to process, and to relax. Designed by Richard Clarkson Studio in collaboration with Monder, Journ represents the epitome of modern comfort translated through an elemental, minimalist style. Launching with two leather colorways (Natural and Cognac), the chair heralds a new line of furniture featuring thematically consistent aesthetics, materials, and production techniques. By employing its frame to shape the leather, Journ cradles the body in a relaxed, ergonomically embracing posture. Arm chair 34” x 34” x 34” Ottoman 28” x 22” x 16”
bloc. In early 2017 we began working on a range of homewares aimed at the tabletop scale. We called this evolving collection of products: Executive Objects. They are designed using a simple manifesto that states each object must be minimal in style, geometric in form, honest in material, elegant in simplicity and sculptural to the core. The manifesto itself is a simplified reflection of the Studio’s own design style and ideology. The collection launched with five product lines, one of which was Bloc, a cast brass, desktop monolith that also opens bottles Optional Laser engraving 2.5” x 2.5” x 2.1” 17
spoke. Inspired by the flat-pack nature of David Trubridge’s lighting designs we set out to explore other opportunities for flat-packing. Spoke is our first product from that exploration, it consists of a 2.5” solid brass disc with 20 angled holes around its circumference. Brass rods are pushed into each of these holes forming a concave structure reminiscent of a bike wheel. The holes are drilled to such a fine tolerance as to allow rods to be inserted and removed with minimal force but hold fast when in use. 12” diameter, 2” height

poise. Poise comes with a set of three candles 13 ¾” long and ¾ in diameter (35 cm long and 22mm in diameter) each with a burning time of roughly 10 hours. These are unscented, non-dripping, 100% stearin candles. While we recommend using pre-threaded, replacement candles purchased above, you are able to use any standard ¾” diameter candle by threading it into the candle socket of the Poise candlestick. 6” diameter base

lean. Lean is inspired by the self-clamping table legs used by Luis Arrivillaga in his Quadra table system. Like other cantilevered designs Luis’s table legs lock into position using the weight of the table top and the angle of the legs themselves. This method does away with the need for fasteners or glue and creates a more modular design. Our Lean bookend embodies the very same principles, it easily slots onto standard shelves or surfaces from 1/2” to 3/4” (12mm - 18mm) thick. Lean happily rests at a slight angle and only locks into place once books are leaned against it. 11” x 6” x 3/8”

node. A node is a point at which lines or pathways intersect or branch; a central or connecting point. We like to think of these wall-hooks as nodes that connect objects. Nodes are solid brass screw in wall hooks available in three sizes and purchased as sets of three. They can be installed independently, in rows, in lines, or (our favorite) as asymmetric clusters. This variety of size and arrangement creates a unique way to utilize your wall as an artspace. In the same way a gallery curates art you can curate your objects - telling the story of you through what you choose to hang on your wall and how you arrange it. rule. Minimal raw brass ruler set comprised of a 1” x 6” long small rule and 2” x 12” big rule. Designed specifically to live on display atop the desk and never in the draw. Featuring laser etched metric and imperial increments on respective sides. Large 2” x 12” Small 1” x 6”

launch. Initiate launch sequence and prepare for takeoff! This spaceship seems to be stuck in a perpetual launch cycle. Using a backflow incense pod the spaceship funnels the incense smoke downwards out through its exhaust port. Designed by Juan Trapp and inspired by classic Thunderbird shapes and forms. 2” x 2” x 6”

tangent. A unique self balancing shelf clock that sits at a perfect tangent to the surface it’s placed on. Using a system of weights and internal balances the clock always returns to its correct position when nudged or relocated. The hands of the clock overlap the shelf or surface edge, which becomes an extension of the clock itself. 4” x 4” x 7”

globe. Globe is a suspended handblown glass ball in 12” and 8” diameters, available with or without an integrated LED light source. The design of the Globe creates a unique viewing perspective of plants and other elements, often providing intense magnification or complete disappearance. Originally designed as a terrarium for ferns, moss, succulents and aquatic fauna, we quickly discovered exciting new possibilities and applications beyond plants. saber. Inspired by music visualizer displays and stereo equalizers. Saber is a music & sound visualizing lamp. Designed to function as either a single unit or in multiples. When installed in multiples each individual Saber can be set to one (or all) of eight specific frequencies ranging from bass to high frequencies. By selecting increasingly higher frequencies from left to right a basic spectrum analyzer can be achieved at a large scale. Available individually or in sets of 7 units 3ft (1m) length x 1.5� diameter 39

mobile. Inspired by Alexander Calder’s mobile artworks this lamp is uses dynamic movement as a design element. By gently pulling on the lower arm the system becomes offset and through a series of graceful over-corrections slowly finds its way to equilibrium once more. This motion also incites a subtle spinning effect emphasising the flowing motion. The systems 12 volt LED lights provide a warm glowing light that is cool to the touch and more durable than regular incandescent bulbs. Mobile comes in two styles; Globe and Lite. I have memories of walking the sandy shores of Waimarama Beach at night looking up and being able to trace the flow of the Milky Way, losing myself in the stars and for a moment moving beyond the human sense of scale and time. Many cultures have interpreted the stars in their own way, creating stories and legends about those clusters of burning suns millions of miles away. Early astronomers used the stars to predict weather and seasons by identifying twelve constellations linked to the position of the sun throughout the year. These became the Zodiac constellations and with them came a new relationship with the stars. 44
