Why is it that we often find ourselves reminiscing about the “good ‘ol days”; when you were given a wide choice of product and what was sold was fully supported. There was a time when tradesmen and technicians had a broad range of knowledge, common sense and a willingness to get to bottom of things. Importantly, when there was a problem that was beyond their area of ‘specialty’ they could still diagnose it and get it fixed. What we hear more and more is that new product is being supported by ‘guys reading manuals’; there is little connection between the people selling the product and the people supporting it. Since 1988 the BFA Group has worked closely with its alliance partners, including Moretto, Borch and Teca-Print to keep our both our sales and service team upto-date and conversant with all aspects of the machinery we sell. Importantly, they talk to each other! But what really sets the BFA Group apart is a team of over 50 engineers, tradesmen and technicians, based in Melbourne and Sydney, who collectively have over a thousand years of experience and are capable of solving problems that no one else wants to tackle. This is what you need to keep your production running and keep you moving forward.

e recycling of plastics has been around for donkeys years. Generally, it’s well accepted that the basic technology of reclaiming, sorting and shredding is nothing new. However, the rising cost of raw materials and energy has generated a healthy and growing demand for recycled material. As a result, machinery suppliers in this category are blossoming from providers of commoditystyle machinery to plastic rag and bone men to developers of new high-tech equipment who are finding that their customers need large scale equipment and brand new “biggerthan-ever” recycling lines. Herbold is a top supplier of recycling equipment. Herbold’s technical director and member of the family which owns the company, Mr Karlheinz Herbold (53), is a pioneer in post consumer plastics recycling. A specialist in size-reduction equipment, Herbold supplies machinery to the global recycling industry. e group holds a number of patents for innovations in granulation, the most recent is the US-patent for forced-feed granulators. Recently, Herbold has made great advances in the UK, supplying machinery through Motan Colortronic to the rapidly growing British recycling industry. Among Herbold’s contributions have been some record breaking machines.

Vision Australia’s Seeing Eye Dog Breeding and Training Program The Need for the Seeing Eye Dog Program Today there is still up to a two-year waiting list for clients who desperately need a Seeing Eye Dog and the list is growing. With the number of people who are vision impaired expected to double in the next decade, there will be an even greater demand for our very special working dogs. For the past 50 years, people who are blind or have low vision in Victoria have been able to seek the support of Vision Australia's Seeing Eye Dogs Orientation and Mobility division to assist them in being suitably matched to a trained Seeing Eye Dog. A significant amount of time and expertise is invested into each Seeing Eye Dog. From pup to seeing-eye dog takes nearly two years and only dogs that meet the very highest physical and temperamental standards are considered. From 8 weeks of age, puppies, following routine health checks are placed with families, who act as volunteer puppy carers in and around Victoria. This vital placement allows puppies to learn basic commands, obedience and how to behave accordingly in various day to day situations. Our professional puppy care team provide support to each volunteer carer. Around 12 months of age, these puppies are returned to Camp SEDA, where the more formal part of their training takes place. A dog’s skills and attitude are developed so they can consistently produce a safe standard of work. This process is extremely thorough and not until the dog is completely ready to work as a Seeing Eye Dog, will it be allowed to graduate. Throughout this process the dogs are assessed and assessed and assessed again, ensuring that each dog has the qualities expected of a Seeing Eye Dog and one that can be successfully matched with a potential client. It costs $30,000 to breed, raise, train and partner a Seeing Eye Dog to become the eyes of a Victorian who is blind. Each dog will provide its owner with up to 10 years of dedicated service in guiding them through traffic, busy shopping centres, onto public transport and to and from places relevant to each client. Vision Australia is seeking funding support of $30,000 to support the raising, training and partnering of a Seeing Eye Dog puppy Fergus. Donations can be made out to:

Bioplastics The Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) is the peak body for the bioplastics industry in Australasia. The ABA represents Members in the promotion and advocacy for Members products, throughout Australia and New Zealand. The Association administers a voluntary verification scheme for the use of the ’seedling logo’ as confirmation of a product or material complying with the requirements of Australian Standard 4736-2006, the current Australian Standard for biodegradable plastics suitable for commercial composting. Over the past year, the ABA were invited to present their point of view at a number of different forums during the year, and at most, there was significant inquiry and debate about their activities on verification and certification, the advent of a home composting logo and the like. Examples of these were the AIP Technical Dinner in July and the Zero Waste Summit in August at Melbourne Park. The ABA looks forward to more continued success in 2012.

New Versatile Vacugrip Palletiser / Depalletiser for lightweight plastic containers AUTEFA Automation of Augsburg Germany, a specialist in automated product handling and automated warehousing systems have released a new Vacugrip technology, designed IF;9?X97BBO <EH >7D:B?D= B?=>J M;?=>J 9EDJ7?D;HI For palletising, the technology enables the creation and placing of layers of empty containers / bottles onto pallets. As containers come off the blow moulder, they are positioned in a layer forming station and the VacuGrip gently lifts the bottles including bottom layer pad from the forming station for placement onto the pallet. A top frame is placed on the top of the completed pallet top sheet and the pallets can then be either stretch wrapped and/or strapped before being transported. The system is ideally suited for palletising output from multiple low speed blow-moulders onto separate pallet stations of different container types due to the unique patented design of the universal Vacugrip head technology. This universal tool for palletising layers has a layer capacity of up to 40kg and can handle bottle sizes from 200ml to 3.75L. It can palletise and/or depalletise several product lines with various products consecutively as there is no need for format parts and the system does not require change over time. Up to now, the water has had to be drained using painful paracentesis during regular doctor`s appointments. Patients with liver disorders, congestive heart failure and certain types of cancer are particularly affected by ascites. The new system consists of a subcutaneously implanted pump and a catheter system: one catheter connects the abdomen to the pump, while the second connects the pump to the bladder. The new technology is made possible thanks to the use of VESTAKEEP® PEEK, a polyether ether ketone which is particularly characterized by its biocompatibility and biostability. In contrast to metal, the ion content of VESTAKEEP® PEEK is virtually zero, thus preventing shift reactions with the body. What`s more, the PEEK implant is considerably lighter than a comparable metal implant. You have to make products overseas to be profitable....? .... WRONG

A product designed to be made cheaply can be made cheaply anywhere in the world – material costs are much the same the world over. With sufficient volumes, investment in automation far outweighs the costs associated with sourcing the cheaper labour in countries such as China.

local

Many Australians are of the mistaken assumption that you MUST go overseas to make products cheaply – but smart local manufacturers are proving otherwise.

With large retail chains such as supermarkets and hardware stores stocking an ever increasing number of cheaper priced, overseas manufactured goods, it is not hard to see why it could be a common belief among Australians that you cannot profitably manufacture locally. The perception is often that Australia’s manufacturing sector is in dire straits, and that our only alternative is to divert our attentions to ‘high-tech’ sectors to save ourselves. Manufacturers assume the only way to make a profit is to spend as little as possible on design and tooling and then have the manufacturing done offshore.

...China should be used where appropriate.... Astute Australian manufacturers have recognised that manufacturing in China should be used where appropriate, but is not a one-size-fits-all formula for success. Without examining each project on its own merits it is impossible to determine the ‘optimal’ approach to maximise ROI.

It is surprising the number of times when a project is examined to determine true client ROI that the work proves to be cheaper when carried out locally. Financial Model Data shows that for low volume, low complexity products there are little savings to be made by looking offshore. As the production volume rises to suitable levels and complexity increases, there exists a ‘sweet spot’ for overseas manufacturers to offer the benefits of cheaper labour costs. There is often ‘laziness’ in thinking that volumes and complexities continuing to rise will result in increased savings manufacturing out of the country, when in fact the opposite is true.

APS Innovations Pty Ltd in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs is one such company taking up the challenge to create local industry growth from adversity. When a valued customer returned to APS with a design requirement for a new product, it was perceived that it would be necessary to go to China to be competitive. The reality was after proper analysis the facts showed that it could be made in Australia more profitably and more conveniently. With a clear focus on client ROI, the product was designed to take advantage of automation, and cycle quickly with a minimum shot weight - all without sacrificing aesthetic style or product strength. The tooling was designed and specified locally, and sourced through an Australian tool maker with a Chinese tool shop, using a hybrid program to allow local support and control quality at an optimal price. .... and this budget consumer item has become their most successful product to date and retails for less than $2.

Fishing for Customers By Scott Bywater Studies have shown there is one thing which makes a massive difference to your level of success – whether it be fishing for customers or anything else. Want to guess what it is? Da Dee Da Dee Da (sorry, just waiting for you to guess). Have you guessed? Good. Well, here’s the answer: Speed of implementation. So what’s the link with this cartoon? It’s really quite simple. Most people completely miss the link between a good offer and a good result from their advertisements. They try to save money by making a cheap offer. They think: How can I offer less? So if you’re a fish swimming past in a pool of prospects, all you see is this tiny little bit of bait on a big, sharp hook. It’s not very enticing. I encourage my clients to be as GENEROUS as possible. For instance, recently I was chatting with a client whose average lifetime client value for the type of prospect we were targeting was in excess of $10,000. I encouraged them to send a $500.00 cheque to prospects in their target market. They were concerned – and probably thought I was crazy.

!

Then I asked: What are your margins? They had margins of 400%. Then I explained – this will only cost you $125. And with an average lifetime client of $10,000 – even if 79 people rip you off and only one lives up to the lifetime value scenario (highly, highly unlikely) you’ll still be at break-even. By making an irresistible offer, you’ll get ALL THE FISH… while your competitors stand right next to you, shaking their heads – wondering how on earth you do it.

Do you want to learn the easiest way to get more customers fast? Leading advertising copywriter, Scott Bywater, has just completed his brand new guide "7 Ways to Get More Customers" where he outline everything so it's as easy as 1, 2... 3. Polystruct Launch Success LFT in Australia

The recent launch of Polystruct – Duromer’s range of Long Fibre Thermoplastic (LFT) compounds, to the Australian plastics industry was a huge success. Feedback from our customers has been very encouraging. Several significant projects have been initiated to evaluate Polystruct compounds in a wide variety of applications requiring superior mechanical properties not normally available using short fibre thermoplastic compounds. Dr Raj Mathur from Plasticomp and Andrew Pfefferman from Duromer conducted seminars and targeted customer visits in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The intent of these meetings was to explain the virtues of Polystruct when coupled with a scientific evaluation of tooling and part design, fibre and polymer substrate selection and correct injection moulding technique. Dr Raj and Andrew shared their years of experience gained from a successful history of implementing LFT technology into a broad range of applications and industries including parts for power generation, water filtration, aerospace, automotive, fluid distribution, safety products, sporting equipment and structural components. Several case studies were highlighted and discussed to illustrate the many benefits that can be gained through the use of LFT compounds such as Polystruct. These benefits include weight reduction, part consolidation, reduced manufacturing costs and flexibility of design all due to the enhanced physical properties of Polystruct. If you are interested in exploring the benefits of using Polystruct LFT compounds for any application from metal replacement to new part design, the team at Duromer are ready to help. You can find more information and technical data specific to Polystruct compounds on our website – www.polystruct.com or feel free to contact Duromer directly on +61 2 8797 0277.
